First part is deception, all the forces on Pago Pago are now planning for Brisbane... and a 5th div is planning for Rockhampton...

The target in India depends on what happens in the two months it will take us to redeploy...

I always like Ceylon... it is relatively Isolated, and difficult for them to redeploy ground forces to.

The issue is will it have the desired effect in stopping their advance onto Burma...

The objective of any attack is to ultimately reduce the combat power of their deployable forces by killing UK squads in particular... in a location where our forces can provide the support required.

So a short hook may be better if the assumption is the bulk of their deployable offensive capability is marching overland to Burma. This makes it more supportable from the air forces in Burma, but it means we are also landing into the hornets nest of their air force.

A direct approach has the duel difficulty of supply, and the telegraphing of intent. There is no suprise. It is useful as a deception measure...

It all depends on how Akyab goes... if it does fall quickly then we may have to dilute our strike force to provide garrisons in Burma.

Cheers
Rob

One other consideration - which I'm certain you've considered but still bears repeating - is that if you land amphibiously in an area astride their LOCs but without overland LOCs to your own main forces then the supply you drop there in that pocket will never be siphoned off back to the front... I've used that "feature" to supply offensive operations which would not have been feasible if I had relied on overland supply and had been able to draw an overland LOC to my main forces fighting up from Thailand etc...

Thanks Nomo, so you are suggesting a short hook that isn't connected LOC wise with the rest of the "network"... interesting I hadn't looked at the davantages of doing that...

Subs
Sub attack near Buka at 108,129

Japanese Ships
xAK Matumoto Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
xAK Taketoyo Maru
PB Toko Maru #4

Allied Ships
SS Pollack

Japanese ground losses:
Guns lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (2 destroyed, 0 disabled)

She should make Rabaul Ok.

Burma

No Change the mass is gathering north of Akyab, Akyab goes up a percentage to level 4... Supply is around 6k and anoth 1k is coming in via FT. Tha damaged DD's from last turn are disbanded in Akyab to repair a bit...

DEI
The Imperial Guards are almost fully loaded.
Lots of ASW Tf are out hunting subs between Balikpapan and Tarakan.

Pacific
9 more Rufe arrived to defend PM.

Troops are being realocated to their final defensive positions, we had dropped troops in the past by need, now sorting them out so that 4th Fleet units are on 4th fleet bases etc... we want to eak out any combat advantage that that may give us.

China
The chines movement bug is impacting on our ability to pull stuff back, setting a stack to "follow" the lead unit moves out, but the rest reset to the same hex... very annoying...

I expect a few more quite turns before tha air war over Akyab heats up...

Hi Rob, have you reconned Tahiti yet? Wondering what's at Christmas as well.
I have no experience playing this side , I like the Ceylon idea, but it would depend on what his airfields look like in SW India and how many HB's are in country, their dedication to training and such, plus he's getting his RAF DBs soon which could make things ugly if they did their ground work in and around the island. Considering how well you guys have done with carrier air if they stay stay in the Pacific and make raids that may pay off better for you considering the tonnage you've put under so far. Very impressive work! Looking forward to seeing more.

jrcar,

Yeah, that's precisely it. Later on, obviously, you'd look to push north squeezing his forces between your advances troops from Thailand and the troops holding the short hook salient with a view to making contact.

In the short term though it allows an offensive without having the supplies "sucked away" by the supply algorithm when you sealift them in.

Also, strategically, it dislocated their defensive line and if you have tank regiments ready might allow you to maul them in the pursuit before the can get into the jungle proper.

Can you air transport in an Army HQ to Akyab to help with defense. Also, consider moving Southern Command HQ to Rangoon and have it prep for Akyab to get that added bonus. As players we may remember to use Army HQs, but often forget the long reach and added value of having a Command HQ in the area to get that bonus.

Subs

Quiet after all the action last turn. We have several TF chaing down their subs off Rabaul, we aren't getting much luck, on the other hand we have safely moved many important convoys through here without being hit.

Burma

They put up LRCAP over their forces at Akyab and our sweeps andattacks come in. We get a decent ratio of kills, and hit their troops.

However they then attack at Akyab and to my suprise get a 1:1 attack... we losse lots of casulties to their tanks...

DEI
A CV and CVE arrive in Singapore and are put into dock. Another CV is 3-4 days out.

Pacific
All quiet. We are still loading troops from Pago Pago and thining out Fiji.

China
Nothing important.

Loosing Akyab will be a real pain, I was hoping it would hold for another couple of weeks so we can start deploying CV's in the area...

However if it falls it will probably end up being a trap for them, they will have difficulty getting supply in as well will close the sea route (we are supplying by sea)...

Our task will then be to keep the place closed from being able to escort bombers deeper into Burma.

So we get a couple of DD's and an AP, and badly bang up the POW. We loose 19 Zero, 10 kate and 5 Val. They loose around 14 F4-4 and 13 F4-3. 5-6 enevmy CV's are detected (based on the airgroups) including a Brit one.

We can fly in some more CV trained Zeros to make up losses... so we are going to go for it next turn... they are in a slight better position support wise... but we have a total of 10 CV's 2 BB's, 2 CS, 2 CA , 1 CL and lots of DD's... Only about 450 aircraft total though...

If we win we will certainly be safe for a while...

If we loose then we won't be raiding for a bit...but they don't have the ground forces available to counterattack us, and the rest of our shipping is well away... so will be a very intersting turn...

Just hope the PoW burns out from fires...

Well it was interesting... Instead of a CV battle in the Pacific we had one off Ceylon!

More detail to come but a Brit cv had one torp hit, Japanese two (35 float)
And both lots of air groups decimated (actually much worse than decimated).

In the Pacific we sank two DD the BB tf is in range and the enemy CV TF fled at high speed.

Cheers
Rob

Hiyo is 35 Float, Junyo only 6 CVE Unyo is fine. Very disapointed how our Zero's have gone in this (and other) battles... they die easily :(

Our strike aircraft are largely destroyed, as are theirs. We move the Kate unit of Unyo and replace with 27 Zero's to give us more fighter coverage, and we will fall back towards Port Blair. The Kate airgroups are flown to Rangoon to rebuild, the Vals are left on mainly for ASW.

A nicely executed plan, but not the target we were expecting!

DD Jupiter, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

We have now sunk over 30 DD's and lost only 3.

It will be interesting to see if they follow up in the Indian Ocean, they will move within Betty Range if they do...

In the Pacific we are hoping to finally sink a Brit BB next turn.

Cheers

Rob

Burma
They are pulling the bulk of their ground forces back, leaving the 7th Indian at Akyab. They have moved in fighters and 1 and 2 engine strike aircraft. We sweep and bomb from the air, with around 1:1 casulties... if not a little more against us. We contine the ocasional CA/CL bombardment run casuing light damage...but a number of BB's have arrived in the area so next few turns should see a bit more action...

Our CV TF safely makes Singapore. In 10 days it will be fully repaired and ready for sea, along with about 6 CA's that are doing upgrades... then we can really own the Bay of Bengal.

More troops have arrived, and another Div is a few days out. Supply was critical, but is now increasing nicely. Forts are all 3, building to 4.

DEI
Around Padang we are now digging in nicely, fi=orts are 3 and climbing... but there is only limited combat power (200AV in the centre, 100 at Sabang, 200 at Palembang).

On Java more arty is arriving, along with engineers. This is freeing up the engineers organic to the Divisions and I plan to recombine the 18th Div in a few days. Bandoeng is starting to gather real damage so an attack is planed in about a week.

Oil andfuel is flowing out, enemy subs are thick but are largely being supressed.

Singapore repair yards have been increased. A BB Tf (with the Yamato) will base out of here soon...

OZ
Dawrwin is bombed daily and continues to be 100% damaged. They have given up sending small xAKL as we kept sinking them...

They have recaptured Nookanbah and Derby, but lack the force to take Broome back... I'd like to reinforce and counter attack...

The B-17 appear to have left the East coast, maybe before we took the Pacific route out of commision? Or they are just resting somwwhere. Port Moresby is fully open on the airfield, but the port is still 100% damaged. We plan to reinforce shortly.

Our subs have been very active around Melbourne and Perth.

We hope we have them worried here and that they are drawing in AIF replacements for the Militia units, rather than rebuilding the 8th Div.

Pacific
Canton Is was trashed, sinking another CL (Hobart)... the DD's got away and we couldn't find the BB... KB has pulled back and refueled. It will soon head off for repairs and upgrades, its been at sea fore most of the last 6 months.

We have succesfully pulled out of Fiji. Then entire operation was pulled off with minimal losses. We are building up luganville as a back base to Noumea and Fiji. Suva is heading towards level 6 forts. they other main bases are 3 or 4.

Tulagi is the jewel in our crown, Lunga is starting to build.

Rabaul is full of "stuff" of all descriptions from BB's to engineers (and icecream machines taken at Suva).

In the Central Pacific garrisons are well established, although supply is limited. Tarawa, Kusaie and Ponope are our key locations.

NORPAC
No action, our subs are reconing and keeping an eye out.

China
Apart from air attacks it has been relatively quiet. We are moving forces around for another thrust.

The battle of the Burma border will really begin to heat up, we both have significant and relatively equal naval forces in the area, our air forces are both we set, capable of defending their bases, and land forces are likewise similar. We appear to have turned the corner for the Battle of Akyab and will destroy a lot of aircraft there... we now need to turn this slight tactical advantage into something more significant...

The 4 divs from the Pacific have now slipped out of Rabaul heading for a new destination...

Cheers

Rob

We got more than Ice cream machines this turn... :) In the game with Nik and Joe getting supplies of ice cream to the defenders in the PHilipines became a mini game....

30 May 1942

Subs

Burma

the BB's turn up at Akyab... they make a big difference compared to CL's!

Night Naval bombardment of Akyab at 54,45

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufort I: 2 destroyed on ground
P-400 Airacobra: 1 destroyed on ground
Hurricane IIb Trop: 4 destroyed on ground

Japanese Ships
BB Yamashiro
BB Nagato
CA Furutaka

Allied ground losses:
256 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 14 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 3 (2 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Vehicles lost 4 (3 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Manpower hits 6
Fires 6669
Airbase hits 12
Airbase supply hits 3
Runway hits 42
Port hits 15
Port supply hits 4

This appears to close the airfield as no fighters rize against our sweeps, and our bombers come in getting more aircraft on the ground. Another BB TF comes in next turn... this appears to tip the balance in our favour and we are finally attriting the enemy air at a higher rate than we are being attritted.

Afternoon Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 42 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 26

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb Trop: 1 destroyed on ground
P-400 Airacobra: 2 destroyed on ground
P-40E Warhawk: 1 destroyed on ground

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 18

Afternoon Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 58 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 18 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 21
Ki-49-Ia Helen x 22

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-49-Ia Helen: 6 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-400 Airacobra: 1 destroyed on ground
Hurricane IIb Trop: 1 destroyed on ground
P-40E Warhawk: 1 destroyed on ground
Albacore I: 1 destroyed on ground

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 17

More troops and supply is about to land at Rangoon. We are short air support... another tactical bomber unit is bought out of Manchuria and converts to Helen. All our fighter units in Burma are bought up to full strength

DEI
More force landing in Java

Pacific
Scott aircraft report large numbers of ships (227) and aircraft (450) at Pearl Harbour... does not sound an appealing tourist location.

In the NorPac we finally detect some movement in the form of an AV moving forward vicinity of Dutch Harbor.

China
No Change.

Our challange is now to turn a slight tactical advantage air wise in Burma into an operational outcome... Maybe an counter landing at Akyab... there is only 1 Indian Div there that we may be able to trash....

The bad thing about bases like Akyab is there is no rail lines to get the damaged planes out. They are stuck there unless they repair.

What are the forces at Cox Bazaar?? A landing here would be nice, if it could be done. Another more daring move would to take a base on the rail line from Chittagong back into India to cut off his supplies. You would lose the troops, but force him to garrison some of those smaller bases to ensure that paras don't do cut off supplies.

Thanks, Cox's Bazaar is heavily garrisoned, that is where the 6th Oz div has gone... so no joy there...

We have plans to drop on bases such as you have identified... however they need to be syncronised with some other actions... looking for opportunities... we are seeking an operational effect, not a tactical tactical one (we probably can't pull of a strategic outcome any more).

Cheers

Rob
