If only fighting against AI, is the Soviet Union EVER activated? Just curious. I'm just getting started on this compared to the old original.

I keep re-playing the first turn, not to change results, but to try one thing or another and get used to the interface, see how things work, etc.

At first I was sweating so many bases and a crazy map, but I'm already starting to re-learn where everything is. I'm sure I'll have many questions, but right now I am wondering about the Soviet Union. If playing PBEM I can see a human mayby allowing it to happen, but does it ever happen playing against AI?

Soviets can activate if the Japanese garrison in Manchukuo drops below the 8000 AV threshold, will activate if you land troops on Soviet territory or they automatically activate on August 1, 1945 in the grand campaigns.

Activation can also be set in the editor so later scenarios may start out with Soviets active.

Section 8.6 in the manual has more info if you would like.

P.S. As for the AI I haven't read about the Soviets activating with the exception of them starting out active or the auto date being reached. I don't believe the AI is under the 8000 AV constraint but I could be wrong about that part.

Thanks!!

It looks like the Soviet Union is a non-issue then if playing allied against Japanese AI.

Even against a human it doesn't look likely they would be activated, but I was concerned with some posts and spreadsheets showing so many comments on building fortifications, ports, etc in early turns.

Thanks again!

The Soviets can also be activated if you switch from one side being AI and both being human controlled too many times. I had that happen with one game where I frequently switched to check things on the Japanese side - it was only into March 1942.

I had the last laugh though (at least for my newest game) ... since I only play the AI and I heard they don't worry about garrison limits I just removed all garrison requirements. Damn thing is I haven't had to tweak the Japanese side once since this new game started.

Dereck,

I just noticed your sig.

I was also Navy, June 1985 to Aug 1998. AT1(AW).

Thanks for your service!!!

And it is amazing how many Navy like strategy games. Did you also have a group that could play Axis and Allies for days on end? :)

If I take what you're asking correctly - no we spent our time either playing a science fiction role-playing game called Traveller or working out the Rubiks Cube.

Of source, some people who REALLY got bored, would put roaches in rings of fire and watch them run around.

Good to see you here, Scott. AT1 here, 1988 - 1997. I taught at AV(A1) school from '93, through the move to P'cola, until the end of '97. Any chance we might have crossed paths?

USS America,

Yes, I was a barracks CC in Millington from June '94, through the move to P'Cola until discharged Aug '98. I didn't enjoy being on the stump much, so I went to play Mom and Dad instead.
