How do you guys use the Sturm division?

It seems to me that you want to get its morale up over 85 for the movement bonus. It should be easier to do this with the Sturm Div than with other 80 morale divisions, because the Sturm Div is "elite" (which means its "national morale" is higher than normal). Is that correct?

If so, it sounds like you should fight him in as many "eminently winnable" battles as possible early on, and make sure he does not lose any.

What do you all think?

I don't treat it as anything special. There are several infantry divisions that start the game over 85 moral and advance through enemy clear terrain at 2 mp per hex. Those you need to keep an eye on if you think about it.

carnifex, that is 'google translation'

the original reads:
...
Die 78. Infanterie-Division wurde am 26. August 1939 als Division 2. Welle in Stuttgart durch den Artillerie-Kommandeur 5 in Ulm aufgestellt
....

and it is not proper german either. because it says that it was established in Stuttgart by the Artillery-Commander 5. And at the end of the same sentence it says that it was established in Ulm.

I suggest to translate
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/78._Infanterie-Division_(Wehrmacht)

There it reads:

....
Die Division wurde als Infanteriedivision der 2. Aufstellungswelle am 26. August 1939 in Ulm, Wehrkreis V, durch den Artilleriekommandeur V aufgestellt. ....
.....

The Division was established as 2nd Wave Infantry-Division on 26.August 1939 in Ulm, Military District V, through the Artillery-Commander V.

......

78th Inf.Div/78th Sturm Div.

Correct, until 1 jan 1943 the unit was named the 78 Infanterie Div, not "Sturm"

I use Sturm divisions the way I imagine they should have been used - i.e. for storming the most difficult objectives (e.g. Brest Litvosk, Odessa, Sevastopol) and breaking through the tough parts of defensive lines. Mind you, I went into the editor and seriously upgraded the TOEs (flammpanzers, Sig33s, StuGs, CS Tanks, lots of artillery, lots of pioneers, etc; later on wespes, Hummels, H-42s and Brummbars). Oh, and they're Axis-Elite. And there are 8 of 'em by converting standard infantry divs to the Sturm TOE (which is dead easy and the AI then does the upgrading; but beware it will run down your armaments at a very high rate so you might want to add a few armaments factories. But that will require supplies so you will need extra HI, and that will require more resources. getting the balance right is quite complex). All part of my efforts to make the game fun for the Axis, not a grind from T3 (admittedly on a difficult level). It is very difficult to mod to a game that is all of fun, balanced, and relatively historical. So the SU OB has been upgraded as well - but on equal numbers, things count more for the Axis.

I believe 78 Sturm got pulverised in a defensive battle at Orsha, June 1944, part of the Bagration operation.

Sturm Division or Storm Division is merely an honorary title. No different than any other infantry division.

From HITLERS LEGIONS by Samuel W. Mitcham Jr.

Home station: Tubingen, Wkr. V

A Wurttemberg division formed on mobilization from reservists, the 78th first saw action in France in 1940 and in 1941 was on the Eastern Front, where it served with AGC in the initial campaign. The division distinguished itself in the battles of Bialowieza and the Yelnya bend and also fought in the Battle of Moscow and against the Soviet winter offensive of 1941/1942. During that period it dropped the 238th Infantry Regiment from it's table of organization and received the 14th Infantry Regiment from the 5th Infantry Division. The 78th remained on the central sector of the Russian Front and acquired such and excellent combat record that it was given the honorary title "Sturm" (Storm or Assault) division in 1942.

From Slaughterhouse by David M. Glantz

Summer 1939 Formed in Ulm.

Dec 1942 Redesignated as a Sturm Division

According to Lexikon der Wehrmacht the division had its own organic Sturmgeschutz battallion.

That battalion, later brigade, wasn't organic and if it was for only a very short time. Looks more like it had been attached for Kursk. I highly doubt OKH would make a Sturmgeschutz brigade organic to an infantry division.

Yeah, in October 43 that battalion was no longer attached to the division. So from about June 43 to sometime after July. A Kursk addition would be a fair guess.
