If you missed it, HPS is starting to make their games downloadable. Six titles are available (as of this date) for download, at $10.00 off their physical CD prices.

I wonder what DRM they are using...the selection isn't really that great yet.

They were removing the DRM from their titles prior to this. And no, the selection isn't great so far, but the point is that making them downloadable (probably the biggest gripe against them) is happening.

Too bad they have problems with 64-bit Win7.

Umm no, the biggest gripe against them is that they still charge $50 for PC games that play and look like they were designed 20 years ago.

The only DRM that they had was requiring the CD in the drive to play. You probably won't (shouldn't) have to do that with a download version.

That's not a gripe... that's whining. *grin*
(if someone really didn't like the look or the play of the games, why would they care what the price was anyway?!? A real-life non sequitur!)

Nope, they don't. I'm running about 20 titles all on Windows 7 64 bit (and Vista 64 bit prior to that) without any problems at all.

Cheers

Yeah well, that's not my experience, so how things work on your end isn't really that interesting to me.

Have you patched them up to the latest versions and what problem are you having? I play a heap of PBEM and I know of at least 20 others who are also having no problems with 64 bit Windows..

I am merely pointing out that your general statement that they don't work with 64 bit Windows is far from accurate which serves no purpose other than to scare off potential users.

You can purchase HPS titles from the NWS Online Gaming Store for $29.99 each. Discounts are also available from HPS directly (for bulk orders; just ask).

There's nothing wrong with venerability per se. (People still play chess, right? Doesn't get any more retro than that.) I never tire of playing tested, tried-and-true classic war games. If nothing else, they're bug free. No unpleasant surprises.

Plus, JTS (nee HPS) continues to patch these decade-old game systems -- not with bug fixes, but with game enhancements. Witness their Updates page.

I have a few gripes, but all in all I am happy to do business with HPS, and to continue playing their games.

+1

Since I got a new book "Neptune's Inferno: the US Navy at Guadalcanal" I've been thoroughly enjoying the Guadalcanal Naval battle game (patched up of course). Is it the cutting edge of naval warfare games ... no ... but its fun as heck for me. ... and I still jump back to the numerous PzCampaings (WWII) games when I'm reading a book about a particular battle. Their OOBs are very accurate.

Wouldn't worry much about that. Most ignore the terminal idiot.

What he said. Never had any trouble with any Vista and 7 32 bit and 7 64 bit with any of a dozen or so HPS titles.

I cannot imagine any DRMs with a download. That would be just nuts.

The HPS games can have issues with newer Nvidia gpu drivers. If the game was patch after December of last year, it is good to go. Otherwise it can have graphical issues displaying the map.

Win 7 64 has nothing to do with the game playing or not.

Seems to be the norm though, so I wouldn't count on it to be absent until someone can confirm it. Prices do seem a bit high for games with DRM, but you never know.

First I have to say that I prefer hard copy to download anyway, but why pay $39.95 for download when I can get the hard copy for $29.99 at NWS? I can wait a couple of days for the hard copy to arrive, I know there is also shipping charge, but worth it to me for the hard copy.

I did check NWS just to see, but so far they don't offer the games via download so you have to go to HPS if that is what you prefer.

Funny that HPS has a section on their site "Called Vista/Windows 7 issues" then... Besides, advising the user to downgrade a couple of .dll files to ones that are SEVEN years old to play a game is hardly solving the problem...

Hi Terminus,

The information relating to that link concerns the following problems:

- Issues displaying the help file (this has since been rectified by Microsoft allowing users to download the older help file viewer). Not critical, the help files are also available in PDF form if you don't want to install the Microsoft update;

- Issues when installing into the "program files" directory. An issue that is easily solvable by installing into a different path or running the game as admin; and

- An error displayed at the end of instalation, which has no effect on the installation at all and so can be ignored.

Now, none of these are critical and have no effect on them working. I run Tobruk 41 which was last updated in 2007 on both a SLI Nvidia system, a Crossfire ATI system and a Macbook Pro laptop.....no problems, which is similr to many others.

In in the interest of trying to help you get them running on your system, what problems are you actually having? Does the game refuse to run at all, or are you experiencing issues when running a game?

Also, I can't find anywhere on the HPS site where they tell you to download seven year old DLL files, are you able to post the link?

Cheers

Mark
