Here is a better picture of the starboard silhouette of the Prinz Eugen.

Starboard side?

Yes, starboard side.

The cold beauty of the ship must have made me dizzy.

Right, peeved that Orm and Rasputitsa between them spoiled my grognard question here is another:

Which ship am I?

- I fought during WWII but do not have a WIF counter (I was not big enough) and I am not an RN vessel.

Edited for appalling spelling

- My construction was completed a couple of years after WWI. I am from a well known class of ship, but my particular story is relatively - and surprisingly - little known.

I am thinking of one of the USN four stackers, which were completed after WW1 and although vessels were transferred to the RN, some were passed to other services. Bit more info needed.

I am an airbase completed in 1943.
Only a single offensive operational mission was flown from this base during WW2.

How about Yagodnik used for one of the 617 Sqn attempts at the Tirpitz.

Not Yagodnik.

About 2,500 aircraft landed here in 1944. Including an unexpected nightfighter, a JU-88g-1.
Four 350,000 gallon fuel tanks were built on the aerodrome, but not intended to to be used for refuelling.

This is more like it; two to go...here's the first of those.

- My construction was completed a couple of years after WWI. I am from a well known class of ship, but my particular story is relatively - and surprisingly - little known.
- I did not survive WWII, and nor did any of my crew (although they did not all go down with me).
- I had a ship named in honour of me that also served in WWII. That ship was a similar type to mine, but not exactly the same type.

USS Edsall (DD-219), the spunky little Clemson class destroyer that fought a running gunfight with Kido Butai alone for over an hour?  She might have survived had Adm. Nagumo not gotten so furious that his battlecruisers (Hiei and Kirishima) and heavy cruisers (Tone and Chikuma) couldn't hit her that he called in an airstrike of Vals to disable her so they could finish her off.  Edsall's story doesn't end there, some of her crew were picked up (though most were left to die in the water), interrogated and placed in a PoW camp.  Post-war, they found mass graves containing the several of her crewmen who had been decapitated.  Surprisingly, her captain nor her crew were never commended for this action.

USS Edsall (DE-129) was built in her honor.

If she isn't the ship you are looking for, well, she should be!

USS Edsall it is. I realised I gave away the answer on the WITP forum, but assume you got this yourself so well done.

Seems remarkably strange that her captain and crew were not recognised for their gallant fight against a heavy IJN fleet

I am working on her write-up at the moment.

Can't be Conte di Cavour.

Torpedoed by a British aircraft during the attack on the naval base of Taranto.
Raised at the end of 1941.
Captured by Germans, but later abandoned during Trieste bombing (15 February 1945).
Scrapped on 27 February 1947.

No scuttling by crew especially not twice.

I can think of a few ships that are tantalising close - but lack a detail I can think of one that fits the bill in all respects; the Danish Niels Juel.

the other Danish coastal defence ship peder skram .. was also sunk by it´s own crew in Copenhagen ... then raised by the Germans

then later sunk by allied air crafts... when it was operating as a anti air ship outside of Kiel ... under the name Adler ....

then raised by the Danish ... and broken up ...

but one of the turret for the 24 cm guns were used as the casing .. for a experimental nuclear reactor

the Danish ships were REALLY used

Mighty quiet on the Forum at the moment....

Here's a relatively easy question to liven the place up - no Googling now.

Major Helmuth Reinberger was involved in which well known incident in the opening year of World War II?
