I'd hate for us to disagree on something like that.

Hi all,

quote:

ORIGINAL: USS America

Blockbuster video is running a deal through July 4th where you can get one non-new release movie on BluRay or DVD every day for free, after one regular rental.  I've had quite a week, as I'm making good progress on my quest to see every movie that has won the Oscar for Best Picture.  I've liked some more than others and enjoyed some more than others (two different takes in my book) but every one so far has been well deserving!  Not a dud in the lot yet.

Watched for the first time this week:

Gone with the Wind - there was way more to the story than I thought, glad my wife picked this one out to get this current Best Picture run started.  I loved Clark Gable and the Rhett Butler character.
The English Patient - I've yet to see Ralph Fiennes in a role where I didn't like his performance.
The Departed - I love a good mobster movie, and the "double spy" angle was fun.  How can Nicholson play the same guy in so many roles and make me still enjoy watching it?
Shakespeare in Love - I loved the idea of paralleling Romeo and Juliet in real life while it was being written.
The King's Speech - watched with my wife earlier this evening.  Rush/Firth/Carter all deserved their acting nominations!  Just a great story.
Crash - just finished watching it.  It's Holy Sheet kind of powerful.  Not everyone's cup of tea, but oh man, what a great movie.

Wife and I very much liked:

The King's Speech
Crash

While it is a crime against the gaming gods to not have AE on every box in the house, I have found that even they (the gaming gods) have to bow before she who must be obyed. Since this lap top is hers there will be no game of mine located on it. So that means that untill I can rig a way to sit at my desk and prop my knee up I am grounded and forced to use her lap top. At least I get my forum fix in After being with her for 7 years I never knew that she could be worse than the nurse in "One flew over the cuckoo's nest"

Gardening day tithe....

Have to put up a temporary fence around the garden because of deer. Anyone got an unused pack of wolves I could borrow to patrol the backyard?

Nice lethal rum drink recipe.
Painkiller. This one is from Harris’ Place on Little Jost Van Dyke, BVI
3 shots pineapple juice
1 shot OJ
1 shot Coco Lopez
fill remaining volume with Pussers Blue Label (ok, technically 3 shots, but after one of these you forget how to count)
sprinkle of nutmeg on the top

I had one of them but couldn't get on with it, the mechanism kept sticking in the top down position.

Haven't seen Crash yet but will seek it out after these two recommendations. The King's Speech however was the dogs dangly bits - superb film, superb acting, superb story and the choice of Beethoven for the music that accompanied the climactic scene was inspired. If you haven't seen this yet, then please do

I think I agree that it's the overall best of my recent list. I don't think any can top Crash in the "powerful" or "intensity" category. If you can appreciate movies, even if the topic is not your most enjoyable..... go watch Crash! It's been over 12 hours now, and as I reflect on several of the scenes my heart rate is going up. I really like very emotional and intense movies.

Just made a trip back to Blockbuster video (with the top down in the Boxster ) and brought home No Country for Old Men.

Dang, John, you did it to me again! I just spent about 30 minutes looking at Harris' Place and Little Harbour on JVD.

My lovely bride's best friend from high school lives in Florida and is married to a former professional boat captain. They visited with us in the Turks last year and we have very tentative plans for next year or the year after that for a 3 couple bareboat charter in the BVI for a week. I'm sure to try out your recipe recommendation, but I also hope to sample the original one day.

Mike, a good boat captain is a necessity. Somebody who knows his times and distances and who has a sense of adventure. Somebody who knows those little out-of-the-way gunkholes where the real Island stuff happens. You are gonna have a ball !!

Don't care much for Big Jost, but Little Jost is right across from Cane Garden Bay; 45 minutes with the rags up. Little Jost is kinda dinky, there's just room for Harris's Place and Sydney's Peace and Love, but then Harris shot Sydney several years ago and got away with it, so who knows how things are shaking down. Harris put a dock out and it's a stop for the Bomba Charger. Big, gnarly, diesel passenger boat. Bad juju for close anchored sailboats. I think he screwed the pooch on that one, because everybody anchors deep in over by Sydney's now.

Ther's a flat, sandy spot in the South part of the channel between Little Jost and Big Jost where you can wander about at ankle depth and find keeper conchs (at least you used to could). And there's this teensy little spot of island between Little Jost and that flat spot that has just space and grass to host a Vodau sacrifice (at least it used to did).

I seriously, seriously, like the BVIs better than the the USVIs .You are gonna have a seriously frikkin ball !!

Ciao. John
