Status: offline 		Hi guys, I'm new member on this forum but I have a great passion for wargames e boardgames. I'd like to come closer to the Matrix Games world but I'd like you give me some advice. Here's my preferences:

Genre: Operational/Tactical/Strategic
Timeline: World War II

I've never played to Matrix Games so I would starting with a basic/intermediate complexity game.

You can narrow it down by indicating the followin preferences:
1) Real Time or Turn Based
2) Preferred Theater in WWII.

Operational : Decisive Campaigns: Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris / War in the East
Tactical : Battlefield Academy / Panzer Command: Ostfront
Strategic : Commander Europe At War Gold / Advanced Tactics Gold (Operational/Strategic)

For pausable real time operational play, you can't beat Command Ops: Battles from the Bulge (or any of the previous Airborne Assault games - Highway to the Reich, Conquest of the Aegean).

And War in the Pacific: Admirals Edition is not yet mentioned?!
Although that one requires you to want alot of detail

I've been pretty burned out on WW2 games, after decades of them, yet this is one of the very few I'm regularly drawn into. Wonderful stuff, and I look forward to future ones in the series.

I hear good things about Commander: Europe At War, for a lighter grand strategy WW2 game. However, it's a little older and I believe it only runs at a couple fixed, lower, screen resolutions. I'm looking forward to the WWI version coming in the future, though.


The Operational Art of War II is always one to keep an eye on. For operational level wargaming, many point to this if only for the massive variety of scenarios and settings available. I believe it's old enough that it is likely on sale during Christmas time, or rare promotionals, so it's always one to keep in mind for the future. Though it's an older upgraded title, it does run at native screen resolutions.

+1 It is what I now suggest when someone new is looking for a "war game" or more specifically an Operational game. Hits a real sweet spot for new players and grogs.

In view of that, my suggestion would be to take a look at the info on Combat Command, Battlefield Academy and Panzer Command: Ostfront and go for whichever most appeals to you. There's plenty of choice, and other suggestions made so far would be decent choices too. Avoid War in the Pacific, War in the East or The Operational Art of War as a first game. All are superb, but aren't beginners games, although even that might depend on how much board wargame time you have logged. If you spend half your life playing Fire in the East, WitE might make you think you've died and gone to heaven!

Here's my only advice.
Find and read AAR's on the ones your interested in, always helps me make up my mind, sometime you can find utube video's of gameplay or reviews.

I have bought several Matrix games without luck of really getting into them, or the complexity of them was a deterent. I love war games and have played many of the Avalon Hill solitaire board games, London's Burning, and Pattons Best, etc.. The only Matrix bought game, per say, that I play regularly is Distant Worlds, but that is not what you are looking for.
Myself, being a very novice pc wargamer, (or just not that good at it), I will find it interesting which
wargame you decide to go with, I might follow suit. I am really considering "Decisive Campaigns: Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris" and waiting for "Panzer Corps".

Probably a bit confusing for a beginner, though, especially with the old style interface don't ya think?

I should probably add Battlefield Academy as a suggestion for a beginner, but the graphics style may not be what wargaming beginners are looking for.

My previous suggestion of Decisive Campaigns:Warsaw to Paris still stands, and that would be more of an intermediate level. Which is probably just fine if you've played tabletop hex-based wargames before.

After reading the posts here and reading reviews elswhere, I decided to take the plunge. It's pretty fun buying a new game. I am going to give my best efforts to learn this wargame and get something out of it.

I prefer the historical setting and flavouring of DCBfWtP, it adds so much to the experience. Admittedly your scenario list is fairly short, but in a campaign I believe they all tie together. You get a pretty large chunk of the early part of the Second World War (Case White, Case Yellow, Operation Sea-lion and the invasion of the Netherlands and the overrun of the Bzura Valley). It's soaked in history. It satisifies the operational combat needs, within explicit historical context (OOB's with Leaders involved). A personal sweet spot for me. The action cards support this further, adding further what if's to historical outcomes. Such as the option to land Falschirmjagers behind Dutch lines, or the Terror Bombing of Dutch Cities to affect their national morale.

ATG hasn't got the context nor the flavour. ATG is a good game, but primarily sits in the strategy game genre, giving you randomly generated maps to play out ficticious conflicts against generic armies. I like the idea, but I'm not drawn to it like a moth, because for me I'm playing wargames to explore the history, rather than to play something that allows me to flex my strategy/puzzle/empire building mind. The one thing ATG has going for it, over DCBfWtP is its modular build and powerful editor. If you are so inclined, you can skin and code up any conflict you want, adding your own historical touches. If you are really skillful with the editor, you can come up with some astounding scenarios for the game. This is my primary reason for playing ATG, because it can be used as a wargame construction set, by talented people. However, your experience is down to the skill of the player creating such historical recreations.

Still, for presentation and flavour and depth, I really enjoy DCBfWtP. I'm keen to see the next incarnation of the series touch upon the Eastern front.
