You guys have some good ones. I've done some doozies myself (having Marines land on a dot hex on the way to the invasion hex was good, plus all manner of retirement allowed errors, you name it). The old Flying magazine had a good column "I Learned About Flying From That," and they probably still do. It was a collection of mishaps and near mishaps told in the first person.

One thing I'd like to see is WITP 2 be a bit more idiot proof, more along the lines of "I'd like TF A to run interference for these aphib TFs, you, Mr. Game, figure out the details," with popups once in a while in the form of a paper clip you want to twist into a pretzel: "Are you sure you want to run that DD TF on full speed from Pearl to Cape Town?"; "yes, dammit, and don't ask me again."

Cheers,
CC

A friend of mine knew a guy who was smart enough to set all his carrier aircraft to 100% training but set the range to zero to cut down ops losses. He was also smart enough to take his trains off 100% training as he went into battle. He was not quite smart enough to reset the range so all of his strike aircraft had a range of zero and failed to strike the enemy.

I know someone who put 12 brand new shiny late 1930s model USN DD's into a TF and was going to sail them to Sydney from PH to aid in convoy protection. His plan is pretty good as he knows that they will have enough fuel if he puts them on cruise speed. Well this idiot puts them on full speed instead. They burn up all their fuel about 25 hexes NE of Suva and begin to collect system damage. He routes them to Suva and loads up a AO and two more DD at PH to meet the TF and refuel it. 9 hexes out of PH (two turns) the tanker takes 3 torpedoes and promptly sinks. He returns the DD's to PH and loads up another tanker and adds six more DD's to protect this one ship. He is hell bent of saving his TF no matter the cost. He then sends this to meet the TF in mid ocean.
The game goes several more turns. Later he checks out the situation and to his horror sees that his oiler TF was set to retirement allowed. It meet the out of fuel TF but did not refuel them and then sailed away. So he spends two more turns getting the two to finally meet and refueled. Only trouble is he has put so many DD's into the oiler TF that they have sucked away almost half of the precious fuel. The 12 DD's in the damaged TF cannot fully refuel and won't be able to make it back to PH. So he races the oiler TF back to PH only to have this TF run out of fuel too. It limps back the final two hexes and takes slight damage to all ships. He then loads up two oilers this time with fuel and 5 DD's
The damaged DD TF meanwhile is about 12 hexes out of PH but only has one more turn of fuel left. He stops it dead in the water and puts it on remain on station. Brilliant he thinks. He then moves the oiler TF out to meet the damaged TF. Unfortunatly 12 damaged DDs this close to PH attract the attention of IJN submarines. Two I-Boats attack and because of the damaged and low speed managed to sink three of the DDs
Finally the two TFs link up and refuel and as one big TF crawl back to PH.
So he is down three good DDs, has 17 damaged ones and 1 damaged oiler and 1 sunk oiler. The entire operation takes almost 5 weeks.
This brilliant Admiral received a swift promotion to a weather station in Nova Scotia.

Outstanding! I mean terrible!

Oh, my. Where do I start?

I know this guy who has more ships in his repair yards than he does on active service and its only April 1942.

I also know this guy whose brilliant play as a Japanese player has yielded not one single, solitary troop on Java after 5 months of game time.

And I know this guy who was so sure that allied carriers were no where in the area that he sent several large amphib and surface TFs to invade Port Blair without air cover and watched as nearly the entire fleet was slaughtered by those carriers that were no where around.

This same guy, a few weeks earlier, got to watch every one of his CVLs blown to smithereens by those same blasted allied carriers that were no where in the area!

This guy doesn't learn very fast.

Chez

Guess I will have to nominate....Myself
January -42, spot a Japanese CVL with some DDs SE of PH thinking it is one of two;
a trap or a raider that got too close to my searchplanes. Deciding that Nah, that is no trap so I sent out two US CVs to sink the raider. Did ofc run into KB.
June -42, spot a Jap CVL with some DDs between Colombo and Diego Garcia, thinking it is one of two;
a trap or a raider that got too close to my searchplanes. Deciding that Nah, that is no trap, so sent out all Brit flattops to sink the raider and ran into...Yup you guessed it, the KB.

Needless to say, I am somewhat short of Naval aerial power...

I don't know how blind, misguided, ignorant, overburdened or -plainforwardedly spoken- mentally retarded one can be called, but I (in my first ever GC and I have reached mid-April) sincerely managed to miss, to not notice, to simply fade out the now infamous "Show ships due upgrade" button when searching after those vessels in the countless ports of my vast Empire.......
Arrrrgh!!!!!!!!!!

Someone I knew routed the entire 4th IJA Inf Division, all of its transports, 6 DD, and 2 CA to Clark field before Bataan fell. One company of that division somehow managed to float on the burning wreckage of one barely floating AP back to Iba.

And he learned.....always check the routing of your forces to make sure you don't parade them in front of CD guns and mine fields.

That same person also learned to not always believe your pilots when they report carrier sinkings. Hold the medal ceremonies for a bit and make sure that those carriers stay sunk and don't surface somewhere you are not expecting them.

I just lost a replenishment CVE when the carriers it was to support left for Pearl and the replenishment task force continued to the meeting location {Sending them to a hex instead of using the meet task force routing}.

A person that I have a "passing" knowledge of once sent a critical reinforcement unit to a critical location on the fastest APs he could find. Except that those "fast" APs were way too large to unload in the critical destination hex and the package never got delivered.

My biggest 'error" is sending a very crippled ship to a far port, and then fogetting it is there, allowing it to sink in the harbor!!!

(Sure wish we could ressurect ships from shallow sinkings, like in real life!)

The Forum Community has yet to appoint a court and prosecutor, so in the meantime we must rely on Forum members to report abuses and violations whenever and wherever encountered.  To this point, most such reports have been self-made, but the time has come to vigilantly police the sanctity of the forum.

With this in mind, I would like to report a transgression by GreyJoy, who in his AAR today posted this:  "FWIW i remain fixed on the typical beauty from the 70s...thin, blonde and naturally hairy"

I've never heard a man exlaim a preference for "naturally hairy" women, so I think GreyJoy is in breach of universally recognized taste in the fairer sex.

In Cap Mandrakes AAR, I guess a scrotum is now a unit of measurement...hopefully I didn't read that wrong...

Now that you mention it, CapMandrake is probably the chief candidate to remain on perpetual probation before the AE Kangaroo Court.  That guy is always skating on the edge....

P.S. Please don't provide more evidence in substantiation of your "unit of measurement" charge against Cap.

I dont recall that it was him.  He asked if a scrote was a good or bad thing to be called... and then someone mentioned they found it rather hilarious ordering a scrotum of nuts at a bar....

There might be someone who, in early '42, caught the three IJN CVLs and CVE up in the Aleutians and bushwhacked them good with four USN fleet carriers. Sinking three CVLs was good, but if the fourth USN carrier hadn't had all its air groups on training, maybe the IJN CVE would've been bagged too. At least that's the rumor (which I deny ever having heard or started). If it happened - and I say if - he never mentioned it to his opponent or put it in his AAR, so you can't prove a dang thing!

"You guys play with your pants on? "

Clear Kangaroo Court violation by John Dillworth in reply to comment in another thread that "AE is the most fun you can have with your pants on."

This was brought to my attention when I noticed a referee signaling "illegal use of hands."
