Hi all,

Robert, Martin and Simon - can you please enlighten us regarding the "Phone hacking scandal" that is currently "shaking" UK (although it is going on for several years now)?

What I never read is concise explanation of is how they did what they did - hack into voicemail of all those people?

It's BIG news over here!!

According to the BBC this morning, hacking into mobile phone messages is really easy as the capability is built in to all mobiles to allow remote access.

I think some people are sensing David Cameron is potentially in trouble as he hired Coulsen - apparently despite warnings that he shouldn't..

I think this story will run and run. Apparently the Daily Star offices have been raided too....

The story really kicked off with the fact that the News of the World hacked into the mobile phone of a murdered schoolgirl's father whilst he was the prime suspect in her murder. That rumbled on for a few days before it was revealed that the paper had also been hacking into the phones of the families of military personnel killed in Afghanistan.

Suffice to say, there was a large section of the public who found these actions to be morally wrong, especially given the number of times that NotW has tried to stir up moral outrage over various events in the past. The hacking of a murder suspect's phone was obviously the more serious action, but hacking into the phones of bereaved relatives whilst claiming to be fully behind the forces was probably the straw that broke the camel's back. The Royal British Legion declared that they were breaking their link with NotW which was shortly followed by other advertisers etc withdrawing their support, thus making the continued survival of the paper impossible. Money is all that matters, and once that's gone the management quickly lost any reason to keep fighting.

I'm not going to give my opinion on anything involving Cameron as it'll get political very quickly. However, the editor of the paper claimed to know nothing about her journalists hacking phones, so she's either (a) lying or (b) a **** manager. No doubt she's going to walk into another job in the company...

The irony of a ****-stirring newspaper that is used to whipping up moral outrage falling victim to the same public's outrage is rather amusing though. Now the Jeremy Kyle watching class will have nothing to read until the Sun on Sunday starts printing. How will they know what Wayne Rooney's hair is doing? Or what David Beckham is wearing? Or even more important, which celebrity/sports person/politician has been having an affair/sleeping with hookers/been racist?

Hi all,

Thanks guys!

BTW, I still don't see now they actually managed the "hacking"...

Any link for that BBC explanation Robert?

Sorry Leo - it was not on the website, it was on "Breakfast" this morning. I assumed before watching this that hacking of this nature must be really high tech and sophisticated job, but they made it sound very straightforward. I am sure someone on this forum will be able to provide some technical info.

Found it on BBC site (Q & A)!

quote:

How did the NoW hack phones?

Mobile phones used to come with a default four-digit Pin such as 1234, 0000 or 3333. Customers were expected to change their Pin, but very few did.

Tabloid journalists and private investigators could simply ring the number and if the caller didn't answer, enter the default Pin and access the person's messages.

Another ruse was to change the voicemail Pin from the default to prevent other journalists having access to it.

Well... if this is true then this is no "hacking" at all...

BTW, you in UK have option to access your voicemail by calling your own number?

Here, AFAIK, the voicemail on mobile phones is only accessible via that same mobile phone (i.e. you call your voicemail via your mobile home and only then enter PIN if necessary)...

Hopefully this News of the World hacking thing might make the media clean their act-up, and report the real news again, not that invented drivel 'they' report now.

In addition to the "hacking" there is allegedly the not so small matter of bribing police. I wonder if that is why the original police enquiry was so lacking in thoroughness......

At least you didn't have to sit through the case anthony trial. It was on in our stupid break room every day for like 7 weeks. I seems kinda weird that you need a 7 week trial and 40-50 million dollars to figure out weather some suburban mom killed her kid or not. then there is the whole point of I DON'T CARE put on something entertaining instead of a court room in my break room. Thankfuly espn and sportscenter has been restored.

I'm afraid that reading THE THREAD has refreshed my appreciation for poetry today:

Oh freddled gruntbuggly,
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits
On a lurgid bee
That mordiously hath bitled out
Its earted jurtles
Into a rancid festering [drowned out by moaning and screaming]
Now the jurpling slayjid agrocrustles
Are slurping hagrilly up the axlegrurts
And living glupules frart and slipulate
Like jowling meated liverslime
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me
With crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or else I shall rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon
See if I don't.

Cool...BBC has a Vogon Poetry generator. This is appropriate for starters...

See, see the Martian sky
Marvel at its big green depths.
Tell me, USS Mike do you
Wonder why the eel ignores you?
Why its foobly stare
makes you feel disgruntled.
I can tell you, it is
Worried by your blechorcabrl facial growth
That looks like
A mold.
What's more, it knows
Your flenark potting shed
Smells of A Venutian.
Everything under the big Martian sky
Asks why, why do you even bother?
You only charm Earthlingss.
