Motor Torpedo Launch?

It actually seems quite potent with 2 torpedoes and 2 spares.

Too bad it probably won't hit a thing at 17 knots.

Use 'em as kamikaze PTs perhaps? With that low speed they'll get owned though. Maybe harbor defense or watching sub choke points like Tshushima?

ML?

Why is this boat classified as a ML? It got torps, low speed and can be converted to "ML" with depth charges instead of torps.
No idea what to do with em....can't pool em or anything and range is 7 hexes.

..possible it's a "Motor Launch" - MTL.

Try disbanding it in the port. Do you see a small button "Return to Pool"?
If you play with the latest beta patches you could return it and then evoke in bigger ports closer to the front after 15 days just like ordinary PT boats the Allies have.

Not sure if it works with the last official patch because some time ago there were problems reported with "returned" barges that got stuck at 1 day before arrival.

No way to returns the MLs to a pool...we do have the latest Beta patch installed as well.
No big deal, just an unusual craft with little hope of a successful operational career

Today Allied air fleets in Burma targetted Toungoo and levelled the place!
We fought back well but suffered ac lost on the ground.

Burma

As you can see, Musashi is completing repairs and the very potent 1/44 upgrade.
Together with 2 CVLs she will be ready to rejoin the Fleet shortly.

In Burma our frontline units have been taking a beating and we have suffered some casualties and a division is still cut off north
of Schwebo with little hope of immediate rescue. The only comfort is that it will require a major enemy effort to dislodge it and destroy it.
- That's the sacrifice we have to make for a resilient defence in the region.

If the Central Basin area is to fall Rangoon will not be our main Air Force Base anymore, we probably have to fall back on Bangkok and Victoria Point
using the bases between these bases and Rangoon as staging areas. It's important to plan ahead and this time Indo China, Malaya and the SRA will not be left without proper
defense. Larger LCUs are defending major bases and not a single hex is left without a garrison; as you can see Little Andaman and dot islands have been garrisoned - I broke up a Brigade
into smaller segments and shipped em around together with supplies. This is the plan for ALL bases / dot bases that has development potential for the Allies. This will force an effort from Andy
and make it impossible for 2 para squads to capture the places. Amph landings with unprepped troops is time consuming and costly.

Don't you guys have an HR that prevent to paradrop fragments of a single unit everywhere? Wouldn't it be wise to do that?

In practice it is a hard HR to enforce and can lead to some arguments. Sometimes you want to drop a whole unit but you simply just don't have the airlift. I try to get all of the para unit together eventually but many times it is just a fragment that will take a base and then your opponent may CAP the base to prevent follow on drops. But, my personal feeling is that an empty base is there for the taking. Both sides need to garrison hexes they don't want to lose.

The less HRs the better as they tend to make more problems that they cure. Better yet to communicate with your opponent and put personal limits on your own actions. The golden rule is that if it seems gamey to you it probably will seem gamey to your opponent.

We have as few house rules as possible, but one is that a para unit only can be dropped at one location at the time.
If 2-3 squads are used to capture one dot hex one turn another 2-3 can be used the turn after and so on. If 50% of a para unit is stuck fighting somewhere it's an open question how to deploy the rest.

Since both Japan and Allies have multiple para units (and Chindit glider units) it's essential to protect the most valuable places.
Japan's strongest para unit is an Assault unit with 80 AV or so.

Surface Combat

We lost a destroyer today with one heavily damaged but that will survive.
In return we got a much larger Allied destroyer.

More and more Allied naval assets are gathering in the region in an attempt to gain

Burma

This turn the withdrawal from the exposed Schwebo position was completed.
A few stragglers from the north were routed by the very "Ad-hoc Chinese - Indian" Army Andy got there.

We're now going to defend the basin until it becomes impossible - this is the red line.
The fall back position in the jungle is marked by the green line. Plan is to send a smaller LCU and construction unit to all these hexes.

At Toungoo we now have a reserve army that's groing in size; 3 tank divisions, 1 inf division with support from a tank bde and a tank regiment if required.

Bitter and heavy fighting throughout Burma today!

At sea the Imperial Navy sent a superior force of 1 CA, 1 CL and 6 destroyers.
This force met an Allied force led by the Fiji class cruiser Ceylon and 4 destroyers.
In heavy fighting the Ceylon was sunk and all Allied destroyers damaged. 4 Japanese destroyers were
also damaged, 2 medium, 1 heavy and one had to be scuttled. In the afternoon a skip bombing Helen scored a hit
on a burning Allied destroyer that was reported sunk.

In the air our air force hit enemy ground troops in the Ramree Island area and bombed enemy shipping.
Allied forces hit Prome and in heavy air to air fighting 40 allied and 70 Jap ac were reported destroyed.
We lost 27 pilots today while 18 ac were destroyed on the ground. Prome had to be abandoned as a forward base like Toungoo.

Only the Rangoon hub now provides local air superiority.

On the ground a slow fallback continues; despite having a base with 5 forts it's impossible to store forward supplies
leaving our troops continously deprieved of everything.

100k supplies has been unloaded at Rangoon and the 1st Japanese Tank Corps has assembled as Toungoo; some 1800 AV makes up
our tactical reserve in the region.

IIRC Allies are quite short on Cruisers right now, and actually what is the purpose of all those TFs? You do not use transports in the area, so those can not be raiders, and they are too weak to be raider-hunters. But anyway, there is more Allied ships here, that anyone could assume.

I remember, that you mentioned few months ago, that for saving fuel, you will lower resource transports to Japan, and turn-off LI. Have you done that? It is actually interesting, as Japan have NOT been into any heavy battles, China is quiet, and there are already supply shortage in 1944, without ANY Allies anti-industry intervention.

Remember that you are here to defeat Allied LCU in clear terrain. Most bases in Burma have supply cap, but putting your units outside should help you with supply problem. Do not waste your bombers for attacks in difficult terrain. Prepare army, bombard in clear, and close to strike. There will be no other chances to rout enemy, with air superiority, and ground superiority.

Allies have again more sorties than Japan. Does that mean, that Allies CVs sortied again? Also, you have used too much, too modern fighters on escort. It is clear, no matter of type, fighters will lose (Mustang, Thunderbolt you name it...).

What with this cut-off Division? Does it have ALL borders closed?

They are one more short now
As this combat replay will show; Andy is shuttling in troops and supplies using small convoys and LCTs escorted by PT boats and smaller surface combat TFs.

The Kinugasa and 2 operational destroyers returned to Ramree Island and sank parts of an LC convoy loaded with troops and supplies
On the way out a light cruiser was promptly sunk as well - we still havea sting in 1944!

Not sure Japan is short on supplies but handling industry requirements and shuttling supplies around at the same time is challenging.
I'm afraid it's not possible to defeat Allies in clear terrain in Burma; the second a Japanese major sized army moves into an open hex its pounded by hundreds of
4Es and tactical bombers. Without sufficient supplies and with huge disruption levels any kind of attack becomes meaningless.

If however we get a chance to attack inside a clear base hex things would change.
Aside from this our purpose in Burma is to stall the Allied advance for as long as possible (15th of May first and then we'll see).

No idea, Allied carrier strength should be picking up again by now but I estimate another 2 months or so before they will sortie against any of our major strong holds.
The cut off division can only move west - towards a stack of 21 enemy units...there's just a garrison unit opposing it in the hex and a break out over the river would
have been possible in real life. Now it's more or less doomed and have to sell itself dearly by blocking enemy supply lines and tying up forces.

Yes, the ability of big 4E strikes to raise the disruption of any japanese unit to 90+ in clear terrain is most annoying.

And I am afraid it is only going to get worse. Once the Superforts start flying ground attack missions even bad terrain won't save you.

I am most of the way through reading Antony Beevor's D-Day, which covers the entire Normandy campaign including the breakout and dash across France. Apparently the ability of massed 4EB strikes to do just that was quite real!

Disruption is ok but the inability to stockpile supplies in a fortified base is truly annoying...
In Normandy Allies bombed themselves as much as the Germans and 4Es were only used in a tactical role on a couple of occasions.

But that's ok - it's 1944 and we now fight a holding battle.
Today we measure up another string of successes; offensive as defensive.

The Kinugasa went back to Ramree Island and caused havoc among the smaller Allied crafts there.
As intel has learned parts of the 9th Oz Div has been tin canned to Ramree Island. Poor sods....

A rather quiet turn in the air as most Allied air efforts take a break.
I'm in the process of rotating some fresh air units in but the low morale fighter sqds is an advantage at times.
- If heavily engaged they will break off but if attacking enemy bombers or sweeping enemy fighters they will still perform well enough.

Today we managed to extract the Imp tank division and a brigade from north of Ramree Island.
These were in danger of being cut of as 80000 enemy troops now are attacking the hex east of Ramree Island.

I'm quite pleased with the situation in Burma; nothing critical - the only thing we have to live with is to slowly give ground.
But this is ok, a strong defense in the jungle that can slowly fall back if required will ensure a strong defense not only of Burma but also of Indo-China.
Not going to let Andy have a free run in here this time.

Don't tell anyone but we got 16+ divisions in Burma...
Keep slugging Andy and we'll be ready to meet you in Central Pacific, South Pacific & SRA when you come!

+1 here Rainer79.
& I just can't believe the 4Es were IRL used to carpet bombing the units that were clashed in close combat fighting with each other.
If I were again to negotiate the house rules of my PBEM I'd suggest "no use of strategic bombers on ground attack mission" at least if the enemy LCU is in the same hex as an Allied one...

Well, we have an agreement that 4Es wil not be "overused" in a tactical role.
But if there is a crisis for the Allies I'm quite certain they will sortie and save the day.

Quiet turn again!

Rather not too interesting turns..only Burma
We now produce enough HA-45 engines to support full Frank and George production; some 440 units per month.
Need to increase further to support production of Frances and Peggy bombers.

Not a good day; enemy destroyers get the better of our surface TFs!
First old Tatsuta takes a single torpedo which sinks her. Worse, in another close range encounter with more torps the Kinugasa
gets all the attention from 1000 yards, eats 3 torps and sinks.

This is more or less the end of the Navys effort around Ramree, it's swarming with PT boats and destroyers.

On land hundreds of allied ground units are squeezing out of every corner of Burma.
WitP has now turned into War in Burma and it's chiding my interest in the game.

It's very likely that we will be forced to withdraw into the jungle as even 5 forts in clear hexes isn't enough to protect our ground units there,
even when we got loads of AA units. We got 700 fighters in 4 bases in and around Rangoon but if the basin is lost we will have to pull these back.
- We will do our best to defend Rangoon, at least until the monsoon season starts.

Since Allies sends mostly unescorted LCxs, using only DDs should be anough (actually even MGBs should be enough), so I do not see, why you need Cruisers for your hunting groups. Also submarines with lots of gun ammo can be useful. I do not see any serious escorts for those ships.
I have counted in both large stacks equivalent of 13 Divisions. You are both pretty close on-land. The main difference is that Allies have to send short-legged airgroups around the globe, and you can transfer them by internal lines. Break their airgroups morale, and you will win.
This is really last chance to defeat Allies on land. Another possibility will be on Java, or Philippines, but then I doubt you will be able to land any larger reinforcements.

Your bombers seems to reach almost 1 squad hit per bomber used. Maybe your chances in clear terrain are slim, but theirs are no better. Allies have more AA power, and their bombers carry more bombs, but your supply lines are shorter, and you have bases nearby, so can use local CAP. It seems that both sides are similarly scr****, but Japan can rebuild quicker. And later firepower ratio will be even worse.
Sweep, and LRCAP those units, and then send 100s bombers every day. In a week, they will have no supply, and no combat power. Their airgroups morale will be broken, then close to counterattack, and rout them.

Yeah, just noticed that the Frances unit somehow had reverted to normal range settings which caused it to attack shipping at Ramree Island one hex into extended range, grrr! :p)

Allied destroyers of 44-45 are superior to Jap destroyers and they have vastly more of them. I've only been sending in "old expendables" and don't want to loose too many fleet destroyers.
To counter Allied CLs and CAs I had to send in a few heavy ships and also decided to send a few old light cruisers as destroyer leaders.

80% of the subs I've sent into the area have been sunk or heavily damaged, ac and smaller vessels carry enough ASW capabilities to decisively outweigh the advantages of sending more boats.
There are hundreds of Allied fighters at Akyab so tried to send in a bombardment force but a sub attacking an escort revealed the composition of the entire battle group today

No way to break Allied air power in the region and as you can see below Allied meds and heavies pound our LCUs in our fortified clear hex bases so badly that it's virtuall impossible to
defend the basin anymore. In order to retain our combat strength it will soon become necessary to abandon the basin. The Amb brigade at Ramree is being shattered and we're now air lifting
as many squads as possible out.

I have deleted many of our airstrikes that does no damage to enemy LCUs - so while I may break the smaller ones I'm far from sure we can seriously hurt a major stack.

My two cents here. Ark and I have a great close game going. However, as Ark's opponent I would respectfully never agree to this house rule. One reason is that a hex is 50 miles across and the Japanese player might have 100,000 or more troops in that hex. As with any force, the majority of these troops are not eyeball to eyeball with the enemy and if in open terrain such as in Burma or especially OZ would be very vulnerable to this type of bombing. Second reason is the constant short supply of Allied medium bombers combined with the almost worthlessness of Allied fighters in this role. (a very important role for them) would in effect place a severe handicap on the Allied player. Ark has seen my pools and can tell you that even in Jan of 44, I have virtually no types of medium bombers. (I am willing to bet in our game through 24 months of combat that the ratio of Japanese medium bomber sorties to Allied is running at about a 10-1 rate) and his medium bombers pools seem to be very healthy. (scen #2)

Third it can be argued that with the level of training, doctrine, advanced ground control and radio communication that the Allied were far better suited to close ground support with "any" type of platform than the Japanese. Why not a HR limiting allowing no close air support from any Japanese plane except single engine? My troops have been eating Japanese bombs for a long time now.

Lets get real here. 4E or not, any Japanese unit moving in open terrain after mid 1943, anywhere where there is Allied air, should just get pounded to dust. I see absolutely nothing unreal or incorrect about this. I realize that this is a JFB nightmare but after all, you choose to play them.

Well, we don't have such a house rule - just an greement not to overdo things.
My main issue is that LCUs camped in a major bases with 5-6 forts should be more or less safe from air interdiction in a 50 mile hex...
They're not, neither is their supplies!

Jap ground support isn't worth much...as this turn shows.

As our bombardment TF was spotted yesterday I ordered the big ships to turn back.
I counted on that Andy would evacuate his ac from Akyab and send most of his destroyers there.
- That was correct, hardly any ac reported there today.

Instead I sent a strong destroyer force to Ramree Island and they sank 4 destroyer escorts and 4 PT boats.
The old Minekaze class Urukaze took a hit and sank.

Today's destroyer sweep was used to cover our large minesweeper and 125 mines were laid.
Enjoy

I think it is dependent on the amount of CAP over the target. One squadron will just turn transports back and kill one or two on occasion--and it looks to me as if some of the transports will complete the mission as well. They have worked it out fairly nice. However, he must have had a large CAP over that hex to shoot down all of those Emilys. That is the only time it has worked for me. Why don't you ask him if that was the case. I would be interested in knowing.

Since you are hunting mainly LCxs, and PTs, I was wondering about use of PGs. I do not see any use for them, especially those without ASW weapons. DDs are not armored, so they should have chance even with them, and you do not need any torpedoes, because most ships are too small, so guns should suffice.
PGs are slow, however if you put on them heavy LRCAP, you will at least slaughter enemy anti-ship planes, for small price of few PGs

I have no idea, how it is calculated, but 2 Support Squads have 2*15 men amongst them, so somehow rest of damage equals ONE man...
16 squads, and 22 vehicles is quite good result. I do not think there can be "somehow disabled", or "completely disabled" squad. Disabled is disabled, and without full supply they should not recover.

Now, if you look closer, your attacks at 9k have better results, that those at lower altitude, that is because you are coming too low, and fly exactly into those gazillion twin-Vickers. This could be good for larger supply usage, but not good for your planes. I have checked database, and those twin AAMGs have few upgrades, but all have ceiling at 2100. So your LOWEST attack altitude should be 3000.
Also, if you want to go higher, and there is enemy AA unit in hex, you should go at 10k, because 40mm Bofors have 9800 ceiling.

Allied transports are very sturdy. MAVISes are not only slow, but I am not sure, that they are even armed. And Allied fighters are always heavily armed.
Try to LRCAP with NICKs.

Also, where are your fighters? I do not see you intercept those Allied attacks. Every lost bomber will lower morale, when they reach point, when they begin retreating after just seeing your fighters, there will be time to counterattack.

SnagIt somehow didn't work this turn so no screens....

Our transport commander is rated as "rated careful" and the Mavis transport has no armor but a durability of 44.
This turn a crack George unit with 45 fighters was sent to sweep Ramree Island; it claimed 25 Warhawks. Probably the same that had
a feast with our transports yesterday! In total 45 to 8 ac were lost today in Jap favor.

At the most I've had 100+ fighters on CAP over Ramree Island, all types - results have always been minute versus transport ac.

For several reasons I'm now more careful with my fighters; this turn 400 Allied fighters swept the hex east of Ramree Island, no doubt
in preparation for a major Allied air bombardment - which didn't happen The ground assault thus failed miserably....and we can now
clearly see the Allied main effort on our flank.

Our fighters also need some R&R; numbers and morale must up and I don't want to disperse them too much as I need to defend the Rangoon area
against the Allied hordes of fighters and bombers. A huge convoy with 120k supplies is now unloading and it will take one of our depleted divisions
back to Bangkok. It's possible that this is the last major convoy to arrive at Rangoon - if the basin is lost air superiority over Rangoon will most likely
also be lost.

Well, small slow warships are almost useless against enemy PT boats and destroyers - you saw what happened to Allied DE's last turn; demolished.
Ground casualties from interdiction is an iffy issue, now idea why the numbers are so strange. I have varied bombing altitude as much as possible to get the bombers
to attack uncoordinated, this seem to yield best results.
