I have been on vacation and just rejoined the war.

It is September 19,1942. Allies holding in India (no invasion), Australia (no invasion), and SOPAC (significant IJN operations around Koumac and Efate). Yamato and Kirishima escort an invasion group to Koumac. Yamato takes minor damage and defending port force (two small boys) are promptly dispatched. BBs scram when 3CV force shows up and invasion force (brigade size) perishes under SBD attack. A second thrust with BB Mutsu and Kongo is spotted coming down from Kwaj escorting another invasion force. Ching Lee with Nevada and Idaho intercepts, crippling Mutsu. Sherman arrives with 3CVs and the slaughter begins. Another brigade swimming with the fishes, Mutsu sunk, Kongo badly damaged, two CLs and several other small boys sunk. Both forces returning to Noumea. No IJN CVs detected in area. Invasion of Canal postponed until all forces enroute arrive SOPAC. Looking like Nov 1 invasion. 2nd Marine Div is at Noumea along with Amphib force to carry it to Lunga. 1st Marine Div enroute Noumea, arrives end of the month. Several smaller tank battalions and Arty units enroute, same ETA. Two escort carriers defending shipping route off Baker. Other units, HQ, seebees, fighter and dive bomber squadrons three weeks out. Shipping being concentrated at Noumea. So far so good. 200K supplies and 200K fuel also enroute to Noumea. Noumea now 8 airbase. Ndeni now developing, 1/1. All current efforts toward expanding AB. Have retaken all small islands around Espiritu Santo which enemy had occupied before Marines took back Espiritu.

In India the UK fleet has sunk two brigades before they could unload at Akyab. All fleet elements enroute to Trimcomolee to replenish. Lost quite a few swordfish in this round.

Enemy attacked Dutch Harbor but was repulsed by the defending force. Nothing like reading, invasion force reembarked, in transport phase. Quincy and DD Duncan will be available to return to DH next week. Currently at Seattle completing repairs.

Looks as though things are progressing as predicted in your engagement with Pillager. Still following closely. Johnjohn

September 21, 1942 AP--Navy reports decisive victory over Japanese Navy in South Pacific. In a running four day battle off Luganville the Navy stopped an invasion force and sank two battleships reportedly Mutsu and Kongo, two light cruisers, 6 destroyers, two transports, and a number of other small support ships. Over 2,000 enemy troops and their equipment went down to Davy Jone's locker. The Navy reports that one cruiser and two destroyers were slightly damaged while none of their major combatants suffered any damage. Vice Admiral Halsey jubulantly declares that the enemy has been significantly harmed in their ability to operate in the South Pacific. When pressed for details, Admiral Halsey would only say that the Navy has come of age and is turning back the efforts of the enemy. More follows.

The after action reports confirm that Japan suffered appreciable losses, including Mutsu and Kongo, and lost a brigade at sea. Meanwhile the British Fleet is returning to base to replace lost air frames (Swordfish) and rearm their torpedos. Sherman is doing the same with his three carriers. all in all, a good four days. Hornet and Wasp are still refitting aircraft at Pearl. Half of Hornet's SBCs have been upgraded to SBDs. Probably be another month before the other squadron receives their SBDs.

Am studying profusely how to invade a defended position. Would appreciate your insights. Johnjohn

BTW--1st Marine Div, 2nd Marine Div, 27th Inf Div, and numerous tank BNs, seebees, HQs, AAA, Arty, and small Marine BNs are at Noumea, as is the Americal Div. 200K supply and 125K fuel in place at Noumea with 200K each arriving in next two weeks. Should be able to invade Nov. 1. Targets are Lunga (reportedly well defended), Tulagi, Thousand Ship Bay and Tassafaronga, with four seebee units slated for Kirikiri. Enemy has troops at Tulagi and Lunga, but some of them have been bled with Brigade losses around Koumac and Efate. Have not started recon yet, but can do so whenever with six 4E B-24 units in SOPAC islands. Intel reports have Yamato, Kirishima, and Akagi in Solomons. I have Yorktown, Sara, and Enterprise (SHerman) along with Idaho and Nevada at Noumea. 2 CVEs are enroute to cover the invaders. Hornet and Wasp remain in reserve at PH. Lunga is the only suitable base in the area. All the others have not been developed. My P-40s in Darwin and environs have downed nearly 100 bettys in past three months. Some of the Pilots are reaching the 80 level in order to move over to training command. P-38Fs, one squadron, is based at Cairns. Mostly P-39s and P-40Es on northeast coast. Unfortunately the AI is attacking my concentrated forces piecemeal and paying the price. So I am concentrating on learning how to master the game while observing that your contest is much different and more difficult and that the strategy employed against the AI would likely result in an allied wipeout by February. Oh well. Johnjohn.

johnjohn,

My first question would be... how well defended (to your knowledge) is the Japanese position you're invading?

This is where tracking the known locations of Japanese LCU's from Sigint, AAR and other reports comes in handy. In this game vs Pillager I'm maintaining a list of all known Japanese LCU's in the game - information on this list includes unit name of each LCU, last reported location of the LCU, and date of the game turn the LCU was reported there. I update this list each game turn from (mainly) the AAR's and Sigint report. An Excel spreadsheet works very nicely for keeping this list though I'm sure other things could work as well.

If I was invading, running a "find" in the spreadsheet on the location (base name) that I'm planning to invade provides all the known Jap LCU's occupying the location. If you've been keeping the list since the beginning of the game and update it regularly, the result of this "find" is often quite accurate.

Doing "finds" on where you're planning to invade along with surrounding locations will give you a picture of where your Japanese opponent is defending in strength, also weakly or undefended locations you may also want to invade or take to bypass strongpoints or establish a flanking position.

If you can find out and get a good estimate on the Jap LCU's your invasion will be facing and their strength, you can more accurately determine the strength and composition of the force you will need to invade and quickly capture your objective.

One thing I found out the hard way while liberating Samoa in my previous match vs Pillager... if you invade something and don't capture it quickly, the process gets very long and ugly. This is where correctly determining how much of an invasion force you need to land and the quantity of supply required to get it done is crucial. Make sure you pack enough supply along to get you beyond the initial attack in the event the initial attack does not get the job done.

Summary of Operations 5/17/42

Japanese Home Islands: SS Cuttlefish operating on patrol SE of Tokyo reporting contact with Ki-21 Sally air patrol.

South Pacific: Japanese TF(s) are apparently at Koumac, a possible amphibious landing underway or soon to start. KB could possibly be hanging around nearby. The AAR below is of a Japanese DD at Koumac striking a mine. I'd say it's likely this is where the KB and/or the Japanese TF(s) "spotted" in the Coral Sea on 5/14 went.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 416 encounters mine field at Koumac (113,156)

Japanese Ships
DD Wakatake, Mine hits 1, heavy damage (reported sunk)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A “blip” on the game map also occurred at Koumac during the 5/16 game turn resolution, this possibly the DD hitting the mine (shown above).

An entry in the 5/16 Operations Report indicated US fleet sub Salmon had been spotted by an unspecified enemy force while operating in Coral Sea NW of Koumac. This report may possibly be a contact between SS Salmon and a naval search plane from the KB or a Jap surface combat TF.

As it also turns out, Koumac base hex lies in a “dead zone” outside the range of naval search aircraft from Suva and New Zealand. A number of Allied subs are patrolling the sea areas surrounding New Caledonia but none of these subs are operating at Koumac itself or in the adjacent hexes. Koumac base hex is vacant – no Allied LCU’s, ships or planes located there. Except for the minefield, there is nothing there to spot Pillager’s Jap TF(s) if he indeed sent anything to Koumac.

Three Allied subs near Koumac have been dispatched there to investigate and launch a torpedo or two at whatever they find.

Current weather conditions over the Coral Sea and adjacent areas is clear.

US sub patrol operating in the Solomons–Luganville–Ndeni sea gap reports contact with a small Jap transport. AAR follows.

I have not kept a good record on LCU movements. Thus, don't know the quality of what is there. However, in this form of the cactus campaign, I am not sure I should attack Lunga, but rather should grab everything else first, moving the Divisions to Tassafaronga, which is unoccupied. In fact, presently all but Tulagi are unoccupied undeveloped areas. Thousand Island Bay is still in allied control. I too worry about a fast campaign, esp on the Canal, given that the enemy is at Lunga with 10000 troops and 5 LCUs, some which are engineers. My fear is it will take just as long as it took the allies to secure the island, about six months. I may have whittled down the enemy fleet, but they have plenty left to turn this into a mudslinging slugfest. My thought is too build AB at Kirikiri, Tassafaronga, Thousand Island Base, and reduce the enemy with air power. Most of my cruisers and BBs are in the body and fender shop, having survived numerous surface engagements all over the South Pacific. Most will return by early 43, but for now SAG protection off the Canal is a luxury. I have a few old cruisers available and some DDs not presently escorting the carriers (as are Washington, North Carolina, and South Dakota). Idaho and Nevada are available too, but they are so vulnerable to torpedos that I intend to keep them well back at Luganville.

So my thinking is to run up the 1st Marines and 2nd Marines to Tassafaronga along with engineers, arty, and tanks. The 27th Inf will be the reserve. Marine BNs will take Kirikiri with several Engr BNs to quickly develop an airbase and port. A para BN and Engr will reinforce 1000. May also be able to run a para unit into Russell Islands as well. I think that I can seriously reduce the enemy at Lunga with B-24 attacks escorted with P-38s. Still trying to figure out how to bombard with surface units. Thus far only one ship in each designated task force for bombardment actually does bombard. Doing something wrong, but not sure what it is. Will figure it out. 3 CVs and 2 CVEs will provide aircover for the main invasion. I am not trying to rush this (because i dont know what I am doing) and I fear that bombing Lunga will prompt reinforcement before I actually get there (so no bombing or recon at present). The 38th Inf is at Rabaul and available to the enemy since it is not garrison for Rabaul. Akagi reported in Harbor there too, but may have left. Bettys are stationed at Shortlands, but seems to be only one squadron. Zeros must there too, but the Bettys are presently hitting targets at max range and zeros do not accompany. Only scout planes at Lunga at present.

Sorry to ask advice. I know you are busy with pillager and don't need this distraction. Johnjohn

johnjohn,

No problem with the questions... Feel free to ask.

Once you're playing a human opponent, tracking your opponent's LCUs is then a little more important and useful. The information does provide substantial clues about your opponent's activities, objectives and overall strategy. For launching an amphibious or land offensive against something, it does allow you to "calibrate" the amount and type of force required to take an objective to what your opponent has defending it.

From what you're describing above, there's a lot of weakly defended and undefended bases surrounding Lunga (your primary objective). You might want to consider capturing some of the surrounding bases, especially those with usable airfield and/or port capacity. Also re-occupy bases like Thousand Island Bay that are still under your control, for you they're a "free" landing. Landing at Tassafronga to establish a beachhead on Guadalcanal for an eventual overland attack on Lunga is very useful, especially if it's lightly defended or wide open. Having Tassafronga will allow you to make a gradual buildup of LCU's and supply for an attack on Lunga rather than trying to "dump" everything all at once into Lunga with an amphibious assault (which you can still do even with Tassafronga under your control).

As for the bases surrounding Lunga, build up one or more airfields from which you can launch recon or ground attack air missions against Lunga - both these air missions along with naval bombardments are useful in multiple respects. AAR's of even a weak ground attack air strike or naval bombardment is going to yield some information that can identify Jap LCU(s) present in Lunga - information from these attacks is as valuable (if not more so) as the damage inflicted by the attack itself. One or two attacks on Lunga will not tell you everything, a series of attacks over a period of time will provide some kind of picture of what to expect when you move your LCU's into Lunga. And the information is above and beyond whatever damage your attacks inflict on the Jap defenders.

As you were saying, patience is a good idea. The situation you're describing gives you some opportunity to try out different things at little or no cost if you proceed correctly.

Probably the first step might be dealing with the Betties so they do not interfere with the rest of your operation - destroying the planes themselves (air-to-air or on the ground) and putting the Jap airfield at Shortlands out of commission. Getting control of the airspace over the central and eastern Solomons (at least to the extent where Jap bombers can no longer operate) is going to be important for several things. One idea might be to load up on CAP fighters at or near whatever targets the Betties are hitting at max range. Shooting up unescorted Betties air-to-air is the cheapest and easiest way to rid yourself of them. Once the Betties are shot up, then go after the base they're flying from and put that out of action. No more Betties, at least from Shortlands anyway.

Summary of Operations 5/18/42

US SST Submarine Conversions: Conversion has been completed on two of the three US submarines available for conversion to transport subs (SST) – SS Argonaut and Narwhal being the two subs completing conversion. The third sub (SS Nautilus) is now at Pearl Harbor and just completed 4/42 upgrade (the decision to convert it to a SST made while its upgrade was in progress). SS Nautilus is being sent to the mainland US for conversion to a SST, this being done to conserve available shipyard capacity at Pearl Harbor.

The decision to convert the subs to SST’s was reached based on (1) some points posted by Alfred on this subject of the use of these subs as SST’s he made about a month ago (in real time) and (2) I actually have a sufficient number of US fleet subs in service to where the three subs can be released for conversion to SST’s. As I examined Alfred’s points about uses of SST’s on the Allied side plus other possible uses I was beginning to see, doing the SST conversions on the subs started making much more sense.

I have no immediate plans for any operations with them but SST Argonaut and Narwhal are being dispatched to the South Pacific theatre, to be joined by Nautilus when its conversion is completed. My reasoning being that the most likely operational use of SST’s in the short term will occur in the South Pacific.

Japanese Home Islands: SS Spearfish reports contact with Jap transport south of Kyushu. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Kanoya at 106,66 (ESE of Amami Oshima)

Japanese Ships
AK Kyushu Maru (one hit, a dud)

Allied Ships
SS Spearfish

AK Kyushu Maru is sighted by SS Spearfish

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

North Pacific: Sigint report entry for 5/17 indicates Jap radio transmissions intercepted from Paramushiro Jima. Detected status of Paramushiro Jima base shows no visible Jap activity or forces, also no evidence of expanded port or airfield facilities.

Plans are underway to develop a support base for US submarine operations in the North Pacific theatre area, probable location is projected to be Dutch Harbor. 221 USN Base Force has been transferred from West Coast command to North Pacific theatre and is being brought up to full TOE strength. An AS is being dispatched to the North Pacific theatre for use at the planned support base. The North Pacific submarine base is planned to be used for supporting submarine ops off the Japanese Home Islands.

South Pacific: Three Japanese amphibious TF’s reported unloading at Koumac. AAR’s of landing operations follow.

It turns out that Pillager’s timing of his Japanese assault to capture New Caledonia is virtually identical to that in our previous PBEM in CHS – the landing at Koumac in our last CHS match occurring on 5/21/42, in our AE match on 5/18. However, there is one important difference… Pillager landed at Koumac in our last CHS match following the Japanese capture of both Suva and Pago Pago (these captured during April 42). This time around, both Suva and Pago Pago remain in Allied control.

Pillager’s advance in our CHS match to capture what eventually became his Japanese outer perimeter line moved from east to west (first capturing Canton Is, then Pago Pago, Suva and finally Noumea). This time around in AE he’s changed the sequence.

No reports of the KB this game turn. There is a coastwatcher report of five unidentified Japanese ships at Belep Is (NW of Koumac) moving on a NW heading. A US S-class sub is due to arrive at Belep Is during resolution of the 5/19 game turn. Other Allied submarines remain in patrol areas to the south, southeast and east of Noumea.

Current weather conditions over the Coral Sea and adjacent areas remain clear.

Japanese LBA naval air strikes on transport ships unloading at Suva. Combat resolution replay shows the Jap air strikes approaching from a NW direction, indicating Luganville as the most likely origin of Jap bombers flying in the strike. AAR’s follow.

A contact was also reported between US submarine S-35 and what could possibly be the KB southwest of Noumea. AAR follows.

For the moment, it appears Pillager is limiting the KB’s operations to covering the Jap landing at Koumac. One cannot exclude the possibility that Pillager could send the KB either eastward (raid on Auckland and/or Suva) or westward (raid on the Australian east coast). Auckland has been cleared of shipping except for two S-class subs and a US AVD stuck in shipyard undergoing 4/42 upgrade. A US west coast to New Zealand convoy (BP-6) inbound to Auckland is currently south of Tonga and has been re-routed temporarily as a precaution. Supply unloading operations at Pago Pago continue but can be aborted if the situation requires.

Allied naval air search is covering the entire area to the E, S and SE of US sub S-35’s position, also six other submarines (in addition to S-35) are patrolling the sea areas S, SE and E of Noumea. Four other subs plus Dutch sub O-24 are in patrol positions NW of US sub S-35’s position. If S-35’s contact is indeed the KB, the KB will be dodging submarines almost regardless of its movement direction. Most of the aforementioned subs are US S-class boats. Welcome to “S-Class Central”.

Summary of Operations 5/20/42

South Pacific: Overall, the situation is quiet this game turn.

All three Jap landing transport TF’s are still at Koumac, probably unloading their remaining cargo.

Dutch sub O-24 remains at Koumac, attacked this game turn by a D3A1 Val in Koumac base hex. The O-24’s reported contact with the Val suggests (for the time being) Pillager is keeping the KB within range of Koumac to cover the Jap transports. Coastwatcher at Lunga reports CVE Taiyo is in port at that base.

Allied subs continue operating in the area. Nine Allied subs on patrol in the northern and northeastern Coral Sea area, to the W, NW and N of Koumac, covering return routes to Rabaul and Truk. Five additional Allied subs on patrol to the S, SE and E of New Caledonia, covering the path of any possible KB movement towards New Zealand or Suva. Two more subs are refueling at Suva and being held there in reserve.

Weather conditions over the Coral Sea and adjacent areas remain clear.

Precautions remain in effect for New Zealand and Suva against a possible KB raid. The precautions are more of a nuisance than a serious hold-up of any Allied operations in this area that would have been going on anyway.

Coastwatchers at Rabaul reporting harbor is empty. Dutch sub O-23 on patrol in northern sea approaches to Rabaul spots probable Jap surface ASW TF (4 ships).

Australia: Precautions against a possible KB raid on the east coast remain in effect. Like the situation in New Zealand, the precautions are more of a nuisance than a serious obstacle to any activities now underway.

DEI: Japanese capture Madjene, complete occupation of all bases on Celebes. AAR follows.

Summary of Operations 5/22/42

South Pacific: The three Jap landing transport TF’s no longer sighted this game turn at Koumac.

Dutch sub O-24 remains in the Koumac base hex, the sub also reported being attacked by a B5N2 Kate in Koumac. This attack on O-24 indicating parts or all of KB are still somewhere in the sea area within range of Koumac. The O-24 has been drawing “attention” from the KB's naval search planes, this useful in that it's providing an indicator the KB has remained nearby.

Given that a number of Allied submarines continue operating in assigned patrol areas surrounding New Caledonia (in various directions) and also that no subs had a reported contact with KB in the last 2-3 game turns, there is a possiblity the KB is stationary at a position inside a “dead zone” not within any of the submarines’ current patrol areas.

Entries in the 5/21 game turn Operations indicate two US S-class subs (S-35 & S-40) and Dutch sub O-24 in Koumac report being “sighted by the enemy” These three subs surround a sea area located due W of Koumac that's currently a “dead zone” to Allied air search and sub patrols, this area possibly containing the KB’s current location (S-35 to the south, S-40 to the north, O-24 at Koumac to the east of the "dead zone" area) Other Allied subs also remain in position to the north, south and east of the “dead zone” area, O-24 is leaving Koumac and moving directly into the “dead zone” from east to west. I have two additional subs being vectored toward the “dead zone” sea area. Unfortunately I have no subs operating due west of the “dead zone” which is the sea area immediately off Brisbane (though I have this area covered by Hudsons flying naval search from Brisbane). A line of submarines continues operating E and SE of Noumea in the event Pillager moves the KB east or south from the “dead zone” toward either Suva or New Zealand.

No objection on my part to this “cat and mouse” game between most of my available S-class sub fleet vs the KB. At this point in the campaign it’s far less a waste of my time and (ship) fuel than it is for Pillager. The KB has more important things to do than dodging a bunch of S-class and Dutch submarines. Putting a (live) torpedo through the hull of a Jap fleet carrier is within the realm of possibility given the current tactical situation. I happily accept victories in small packages if my subs can “bag” something. Plus there’s the advantage of knowing what and where Pillager has the KB doing right now.

Weather conditions over the Coral Sea and adjacent areas remain clear.

The 5/21 Operations report includes a number of interesting entries recording the presence of (Japanese) support ships in the South Pacific theatre. Reports include AD Nichiran Maru and a DD at Lunga, also AR Canberra Maru with a DD at Luganville.

Coastwatchers at Rabaul reporting 16 Japanese ships in harbor this game turn.

Southwest Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/21 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Port Moresby. Detected status of Port Moresby base shows undetermined Jap aircraft are now based in Port Moresby (none there previously), also four Jap LCU’s. Known Japanese LCU’s in Port Moresby include 8 Base Force, 3 Cavalry Brigade, 1 Maizuru SNLF and 81 Naval Gd. No detected Japanese ships visible at Port Moresby.

Australia: Three US engineer LCU’s arrived at Townsville to augment construction for base expansion in Townsville (for future activities).

DEI: Dutch sub O-16 on patrol reports in sea approaches to Palembang continues reporting contact with a Jap surface ASW TF. O-16 spotted a second Jap TF (four ships including one xAK) apparently departing Palembang on a W heading. AAR follows.

Philippines: Continued Japanese ground bombardment at Bataan. No detected changes in the OOB of Jap ground units at Bataan, though I’d suspect Pillager has some Jap LCU reinforcements enroute to Bataan so he can proceed with more than a series of daily bombardment attacks. Latest AAR follows.

Summary of Operations 5/23/42

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-11 (25 ships) departing the Eastern US this game turn for Australia via Capetown. Seven US LCU’s are loaded aboard this convoy including 1 & 5 Marine Rgts (sub-units of 1st Marine Division), 1 Marine Parachute Bn, 1 USMC Tank Bn, 54 Coastal Artillery Rgt, 33 Aviation Base Force, 197 Coast AA Rgt.

The third sub-unit of 1st Marine Division (7 Marine Rgt) has already reached Australia, just arriving there aboard convoy EX-8 on 5/21. Plans are to combine the three Marine regiments in Australia to form 1 Marine Division once 1 & 5 Rgts arrive with convoy EX-11.

Cargo loaded aboard convoy EX-11 also includes 50K supply and 31K fuel.

Many of the transport ships forming EX-11 completed the round trip between the Eastern US and Australia via Capetown as part of the initial convoy on this route (EX-1).

South Pacific: No reported contacts or detection of the KB in the eastern Coral Sea area. Two Allied submarines were reported as “spotted by the enemy”, presumably by unspecified Japanese aircraft. Dutch sub O-24 was spotted W of Koumac, US S-class sub S-40 spotted NW of Koumac. US submarine S-35 remains S of Koumac but was not reported as spotted this game turn. US fleet sub Salmon is operating near and slightly to the north of S-40’s position but was not reported as being spotted. It appears for the moment that Japanese air search has “pulled back” slightly northward in this area.

There is some possibility from these reports and locations that Pillager could be withdrawing KB to the north. This would be especially true if the KB’s mission had been solely to cover the Koumac landing operation (this essentially being a “done deal” by now).

I’d also expect at this point that Pillager is aware of my capability to create a “submarine minefield” in the Coral Sea and/or adjacent sea areas in the South Pacific. What he probably hasn’t assessed is the quantity of subs I have available for patrol ops in the South Pacific theatre and their composition.

Weather conditions over the Coral Sea and adjacent areas is now overcast.

The 5/22 Operations report includes entries indicating Jap AD Nichiran Maru is at Luganville and has been joined there by an AV. Adding in the entry from the 5/21 Operations report that AR Canberra Maru is also at Luganville, a possible conclusion from this information can be made that Pillager is using Luganville as at least a temporary forward support base for IJN naval operations.

Coastwatchers at Rabaul reporting no Japanese ships in harbor. Dutch sub O-23 operating in the northern sea approaches to Rabaul spotted a Jap surface ASW TF, however no combat resulted from this contact.

Sigint entries for 5/22 indicate heavy volumes of Jap radio transmissions intercepted from Rabaul and Truk. Whether the Sigint reports are significant in terms of Pillager’s operations at and near Koumac cannot be determined. Detected base statuses of both Rabaul and Truk show undetermined Jap planes and ship(s) at anchor. No other visible Jap forces or activity shown at either base.

My overall assessment of current conditions in the South Pacific are leaning toward the conclusion that Pillager is winding down the Koumac operation, the KB (if still around) merely providing cover to any other Japanese ships still withdrawing. Allied submarines will remain in their current assigned patrol areas for several more days, then will be recalled to their bases for replenishment, re-grouping and any necessary repair of minor system damage. Several of the US S-class subs have yet to receive 4/42 ship upgrade (this equipping the subs with radar), these subs to be upgraded as quickly as possible.

I have not stood down alerts for possible KB carrier strikes against Auckland, Suva or eastern Australia, though this will occur very shortly. Overall Allied activity in these areas had been continuing through the Japanese operation at Koumac with delays and relocations in some instances. Compared to our previous CHS match, the Allied “panic factor” to KB operations has decreased somewhat, though the KB has retained its due respect as appropriate for this stage of the campaign (one cannot be too comfortable).

Australia: Transport convoy MX-7 (16 ships) arrived in Australia from the Middle East. Cargo on board convoy MX-7 includes 85K fuel, 16K supply, no LCU’s or aircraft. Arrival and unloading of the convoy is proceeding on schedule with no impact from the Japanese operations at Koumac.

DEI: Japanese mop-up operations continue. Reported Jap amphibious landing is underway at Pamekasan (off eastern Java near Soerabaja). AAR follows.

Indian Ocean: Dutch sub K-VIII on patrol off Rangoon spots Jap surface ASW TF (3 ships – 2 PB, 1 AM). No combat resulted from this contact.

China: Chinese launch local counterattack NW of Sian. Objectives of this action was (1) to exploit results of the abortive Japanese shock assault in this hex on 5/22 and (2) drive the Japanese ground force back across the river line into Sian base hex, this strengthening the Chinese defensive position outside Sian.

The two Jap LCU’s attacked in this action advanced into hex 83,40 in a pursuit resulting from the Japanese capture of Sian on 5/19. The LCU’s appeared to have been greatly weakened from the result of the last game turn’s (5/22) Japanese shock attack in this hex – if true, a successful Chinese counterattack would drive back the two Jap LCU’s and re-establish the river line outside (NW of) Sian as a unbroken line of defense. This turned out to be the case. AAR and situation map follow.

Summary of Operations 5/24/42

Japanese Home Islands: US sub Stingray reports Jap ASW air patrol (Ki-48 Lily) activity NW of Chichi-Jima.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/23 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Roi-Namur. Detected status shows no visible Jap forces or activity at this base, though the airfield at Roi-Namur has been expanded to its maximum size of 4(1). The starting locations of two Jap LCU’s (6 Base Force, 7 JNAF Co) on 12/8/41 are at Roi-Namur, though no information exists to confirm these units are still at Roi-Namur or they have been moved.

Contact reported between US submarine and what is either a Jap surface combat TF or escorts for the KB. No additional information on the Jap TF’s movement heading or any other Japanese ship(s) or TF present. The most likely scenario is the Japanese TF in this contact are ships returning to Truk from the just completed Koumac invasion. AAR follows.

South Pacific: No report of contact or spotting from Allied subs operating in the eastern Coral Sea area. At this point it appears no major Japanese air or naval forces remain in the immediate area around Koumac.

5/23 Operations report entries continue to indicate Jap auxiliary ships are operating in Lunga and Luganville bases. CS Chiyoda and CVE Hosho are reported at Lunga, AD Nichiran Maru reported at Luganville. US subs are being dispatched to both base hexes for recon and also attack these ships if possible.

Weather conditions over the Coral Sea and adjacent areas is now rain.

No report from coastwatchers at Rabaul on ships in that base. Dutch sub O-23 in the northern approaches to Rabaul not reporting any contacts.

Stand downs on alerts for possible IJN strikes against Auckland, Suva and eastern Australia have been issued.

Some of the Allied sub patrols and pickets operating in the Coral Sea and adjacent sea areas near Auckland or Suva have been recalled to base for replenishment and/or minor system damage repair. I’ve been maintaining a continuous picket line of submarine patrols and naval search aircraft along an arc covering the N, NW, and W approaches to Suva and Samoa and extending through the sea area between Noumea and New Zealand – this covering the Suva/Samoa “bridgehead” area and its lines of communications to Auckland and Tahiti. This picket line also serves as an early warning against major Japanese naval movements (either KB or surface TF’s) that enter the Suva/Samoa “bridgehead” area. This had been done prior to the Koumac invasion and plans are to continue this picket line along with Allied sub patrols in the northern Coral Sea.

Summary of Operations 5/25/42

Allied Pilot Training: With the large number of Allied air units due for withdrawal from the game on 6/1/42, many trained and partially trained pilots are being removed from these squadrons as they are being withdrawn and transferred to the reserve pilot replacement pool before the air unit is removed from the game. Trained pilots in these air units are replaced with untrained replacement pilots. The air units leave the game with the untrained pilots in them.

Many of the Allied air units due for withdrawal on 6/1/42 are USAAF air units based on the US west coast in restricted commands and have been operating in an almost continuous 100% training level (with brief rest spells to reduce pilot fatigue levels) since 12/8/41.

Four USAAF fighter squadrons were disbanded this game turn and withdrawn as described above. A total of 105 trained fighter pilots were removed from the four withdrawn squadrons and transferred to the reserve pilot replacement pool. Nearly all the transferred pilots had a minimum 55-60 experience level with air-to-air and defensive skill ratings at 65-70.

Japanese Home Islands: US sub Cuttlefish reporting attack by Jap ASW air patrol (Ki-21 Sally) activity ESE of Aogashima.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/24 reports Jap 4th Air Division HQ is now located at Tabiteuea. HQ 4 Air Division is a new unit in the known Japanese OOB, this LCU not appearing in any previous report. Two other Japanese LCU’s are reported to be located at Tabituea (1 Garrison Unit, HQ 6th Fleet).

South Pacific: No report of contact or spotting in the eastern Coral Sea area or near Koumac.

Unidentified Jap LCU(s) detected adjacent to Noumea base hex. No surprise… The Japanese capture of Noumea will yield Pillager 59K resource points – though I was able to remove an estimated 40-50K of resources from Noumea before the Japanese invasion at Koumac ended transport shipping operations from Noumea. All resource points removed from Noumea were transported to Auckland for use as input to industry production in New Zealand.

No entries in the 5/24 Operations report related to Jap auxiliary ships operating in Lunga and Luganville bases.

Coastwatchers at Rabaul reporting no ships in harbor. This is contradicted by a Sigint entry from 5/24 that reports BB Haruna is now at Rabaul – this entry could also provide a possible clue to the KB’s location if Haruna is one of its escorts.

From the results of the above AAR, it may be concluded the defense of Bataan can withstand one possibly two more Japanese assaults at the current level of attack. The remaining question is now the amount of Japanese time and effort required for Pillager to launch those assaults.

Summary of Operations 5/26/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/25 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Jaluit. No visible Jap forces or activity. Detected status of Jaluit shows evidence of construction activity to increase port size. Current port size of Jaluit is 3(1). Known Japanese LCU’s at Jaluit include Jaluit Naval Fort (static unit) and 24 JNAF AF Unit.

Another Sigint entry from 5/25 reports intercepted radio transmissions from an unidentified Jap task force located due W of Truk and SSE of Woleai (hex 103,108). No information shown as to this TF’s composition or movement heading. Current hex position of this TF could indicate Rabaul as either its origin or destination. However, the TF’s current hex position does not place it on a direct movement path between Rabaul and either Truk or the Japanese Home Islands. The hex position does place it on a possible movement path between Rabaul and Formosa, or between Rabaul and ports in northern China or Manchuria. Another possibility is the TF is moving between Truk and either the DEI or Singapore. No US submarine patrol areas are to the W of Truk (there are patrol areas in place both N and S of Truk).

South Pacific: Japanese capture LaFoa dot hex base adjacent to Noumea. AAR follows.

Burma: Based on Sigint and other reports, it appears Pillager is taking a defensive stance with Japanese forces in Burma. Reports are not indicating any buildup of Jap forces “on the ground” inside Burma. If true, Pillager appears content to occupy Burma and not attempt an overland invasion of India (at least in the short term).

This does not eliminate the possibility of an invasion of India or Ceylon by sea. Pillager did not attempt an Japanese invasion of India in our previous CHS game and my current assessment is that this may well be the case again in our AE match. This conclusion does not eliminate the need on my part for Allied preparations and build-up to counter a Japanese move of any type against India or Ceylon.

Assuming what I’ve stated above becomes the status-quo in Southeast Asia, I can at least consider the possibility in the “sooner rather than later” future an Allied offensive to draw some of Pillager’s attention (and possibly Japanese forces or resources) from other theatres. I’m sure there are some considerations (pro and con) and these will be looked into. Ideas and opinions from any Allied experts in this theatre certainly welcome.

On the Johnjohn front. October 22, 1942 A multiday running carrier fight off Tulagi in the Eastern Solomons has depleted Sherman's three carriers and Yammamoto's Agaki, Shokaku, and Hiyo. Both sides took damage, but both sides able to extract carriers intact. Admiral Callaghan, fighting with Australia and two light cruisers, picked off a convoy lifting the 38th division from Rabaul following the enemy carriers towards Lunga. Another 2,000 dead troops. Intel informs Sherman that BB Kirishima blew up due to bomb hit from Yorktown's DBs. Yorktown damaged and entire CV force withdrawing to PH to refit. May have to send them on to Bay Area where shipyards are free. Hornet and Wasp, now refitted and replenished hustling to Noumea. Long Island and Copahee operating out of Noumea as only carrier effort in area.

Intel and recon report 13,000 enemy on Tulagi and 10,000 at Lunga. Another 400 are at Tassafaronga--probably engineers. Cactus AF damaged to 90+, port to 30+. Am using Lunga as target for all heavy bombers in area to facilitate experience and bombing accuracy. Tulagi, bombed by the CVs, has 30+ AF damage. No operational aircraft either base. Betties and Zeros at Shortlands being shot up by fighters at all target areas. Presently six operational Betties detected.

Am learning the limitations of some of my ships. Discovered, too late, that xAP will not unload vehicles at port 0 even in amphib mode. So I have over 50 engineers at Kirakira and not a single engr vehicle, all which returned to Luganville as undelivered. By mistake sent a contruction BN to Rennell on AP and it unloaded all the heavy equipment. Am now sending the heavy equipment back to Kirakira on an AP. Am flying supplies out to the islands, since single ship deliveries seem not to be worthwhile targets but multiple ship deliveries always invite attack. Presently, with the Yorktown's detachments on Kirakira AB1, no support, and the two CVEs, have established local air superiority over Cactus. There are no reports of enemy base development anywhere in the Solomons, and certainly not beyond Shortlands.

An intel recap reports that seven enemy BBs, 13 CAs, 4 CVs, 1 CVL, 1 CVE, and 37 DDs have been sunk. That is 50% of the prewar strength. Enemy attacks have nearly ceased. The appearance of three of the four remaining CVs, all damaged and air groups depleted, has been the first significant strike in over a month. Although the engagement was a draw, I have retained control of the air off Lunga et. al. Once the enemy carriers retired I rushed in Callaghan and a six DD SAG force which ambushed the reinforcement group. The enemy troops are starving, supply is cut off, and the bases increasingly unuseable. All in all, not too bad a start.

Indian campaign seems to be the next area of operations for enemy. Have moved significant AB personnel to forward bases and am deploying additional Fighters and Bombers to front line AB. 2nd Aussie Div on way overland to Chittagong, putting 1000 AV in fortified positions there. 30,000 enemy are at Cox's and Akyab. Thus far they are not moving, but enemy is increasing air tempo of attacks on Chittagong, a sure sign that they intend to come. UK carriers essentially useless. Virtually all swordfish expended. Will be months before they are re-equipped with strike aircraft--and by then they will have been withdrawn. Fortunately, Prince of Wales and Repulse escaped the enemy on day one and remain available to escort Hermes. Hermes has been reduced to using the fulmar squadron abandoned by Formidable when she was sunk by a sub. That's it. 12 fulmars and 5! Swordfish with which to hit the enemy. So they are out of it. BTW--the fulmar group is due to withdraw in December.

Of note but little significance, Ed O'Hare, now operating with VF-3 off Saratoga, shot down 5 enemy planes on day one of the CV battle. He has six. I suspect the President will want to see him now. All carrier fighter pilots are now at least 50 exp 70 air, and many are 70+. Even in F4Fs they are holding their own. Johnjohn

Haven't run into that situation yet but good to know.

Long Island and Copahee operating out of Noumea as only carrier effort in area.

I'd definately not use CVE's for first-line carrier duty, they're best used as their name indicates... escorts.

CVE Long Island is highly valuable aircraft transport, I wouldn't even use it as a CVE let alone in front-line combat service. I just have it entering my PBEM and plan using it solely for transporting air units.

Where CVE Long Island is highly useful as a aircraft transport in that a land-based air unit can be loaded aboard it and the air unit can then take off from the Long Island as if it was carrier-based (however, it cannot land on the Long Island unless it actually is a carrier-capable air unit). This feature of CVE Long Island allows it to transport an air unit loaded aboard it to a hex distance within the air unit's maximum flight range of the airfield at the destination land base (i.e. island) to which you want to bring the air unit, then "launch" the air unit once the Long Island reaches a sea location within the air unit's maximum flight range. The air unit "flies" from the Long Island (using "transfer to base" on the air unit's information screen) to the airfield at its (destination) land base. This operation is basically identical to transferring an air unit based aboard a CV to an airfield at a land base by flying the air unit off the CV to the airfield.

CVE Long Island is most useful when you're moving a land-based air unit to an airfield at a destination base where (1) the destination airfield is outside the air unit's maximum flight range (it cannot be flown into the destination airfield from another friendly airfield) so the air unit must be loaded aboard a ship and transported there by sea, and either (2a) the base to which you are transporting this air unit by sea has a port size 0 (it cannot be unloaded there from an AK or AKV) or (2b) the base to which you are transporting the air unit by sea is within striking range of Japanese forces (i.e. planes) that could attack and sink an AK or AKV attempting to arrive there and disembark an air unit you have loaded aboard it. Instead of risking the transport ship and possibly losing the air unit if the transport is sunk or severely damaged by enemy action before it can be unloaded, the Long Island can stand off at a distance from the air unit's destination airfield and "launch" the air unit on a one-way transfer to the airfield where you're sending it. Once the air unit is "launched", the Long Island turns around and goes home.

Keep in mind CVE Long Island has some restrictions - it has a capacity of 16 planes, it won't carry 2E or 4E bombers or floatplanes. But for safely getting squadrons of single-engine land based planes into an airfield at a base within striking range of Jap forces (especially airfields on islands within range of Jap bombers from nearby bases) and having most or all the air unit's planes operational immediately upon arrival, the Long Island is an extremely handy tool for the task.

Malacca Straits: Dutch submarines on patrol or in transit through the straits report contacts with Jap ASW air patrols (Ki-48 Lily). October 26, 1942 The Johnjohn adventure against the AI--first time player. Excellent advice re: Long Island. Will withdraw both CVEs in a couple of days when Hornet and Wasp arrive from Pearl. Meanwhile Sara, York, and Enterprise are headed back to PH. Am clearing shipyard space for quick turnaround. Have one CVE enroute with replacement a/c, much needed by all three carriers. Two more are forming up in Tacoma and are also headed to PH to replenish the CVs. Long Island will head to SD and pick up Joe Foss and his squadron and run it out to the south Pacific.

Meanwhile Cactus has 100 AB damage an 46 port damage. Most of the Betties have been shot down as have a considerable number of fighters. Bases are being developed at Rennel and Kirakira. About 25 orphans of Yorktown at Kirakira. Meanwhile the strat RR feature in India has broken down. The 2nd Brit Div is now marching (was strat RR deployment to Calcutta) to nearest railhead to re-embark on trains. Don't know what happened (we did have a storm and lost power) but it sure is a pain. Two other units are not moving properly either.

Seems the best invasion approach (according to a number of other posts) is bomb and bombard the defenders into oblivion and then attack. I am going to try that, but I am going to land at Tassafaronga first and march to Lunga. With three enemy carriers out of business for awhile to reequip aircraft, I have a terrific opportunity to move into the Eastern Solomons in force. This could be real fun. Johnjohn

johnjohn,

A final note or two on US CVE's... Not sure if it works the same way in AE as in WitP (probably does at least to some extent) and I'm probably not your best expert on the subject, but this is as best as I see it. I have little doubt there are readers who are more knowledgeable on this subject than I - you're certainly welcome to chime in with additional information or provide corrections to anything in my own statements.

My own utilization of US CVE's during my previous CHS (WitP) match vs Pillager was driven somewhat by necessity and the situation in that game. While to some extent my use of CVE's were in a suitable role, there were instances where my use of them was not exactly "best practices". Specifically, this was employment of CVE's during the Pago Pago invasion and follow-up (resupply/reinforcement) operations in late 1943-early 1944 at the end of our game. Last time I looked, my thread for our CHS game still exists in the WitP After Action Reports forum. As stated before... what I did there was driven largely by "tactical necessity" and probably should not be considered best practice. Even though what I did with CVE's during the Pago Pago operations in our last game was a success, that success came with a hefty cost. Of the ten CVE's in the first group sent to Pago Pago, eight of them were sunk, both the other two limped home to a lengthy shipyard repair.

Individual CVE's are best suited for use in a particular role depending on characteristics of the air group(s) that is/are based aboard that CVE.

1) Some CVE's do carry combat air squadrons on board them. While I wouldn't throw these pilots/planes in a first-line combat role against the KB without a significant amount of training and upgrade, fighter squadrons on these CVE's are quite suitable for CAP missions providing direct fighter cover over Amphibious or Transport TF's during sea movement or as they unload at a target or destination hex. These CVE's may also have a small contingent of Avengers (TBF or TBM) suitable for ground or airfield attack missions or ASW. These CVE's can be used in front-line combat in emergency situations or to backup the fleet CV's, but not as a primary carrier striking force.

2) Air squadrons aboard other CVE's are designed to provide replacement planes/pilots mainly for VF squadrons on your first-line fleet CV's - these are generally fighter squadrons. I'd guess these too could be used in combat, but probably only as a last resort. Generally, CVE's with replacement air squadrons are most suitably grouped together and operating in Replenishment TF's.

3) CVE Long Island is a category unto itself, as mentioned in a previous post.

I may end up using CVE's in AE much the same as I did in our CHS match, that depends on future events yet to be determined. What will probably be the case is that I'll look at my CVE's (and the air units aboard them) as they arrive in the game as reinforcements and determine where they will go and what they'll be doing. My best guess at this time is that I will be keeping most if not all CVE's in rear-areas and heavily train pilots in the air units aboard them.

The doctrine under which how I will employ CVE's is most likely something I will develop as a work in progress. What I'm expecting is that the air groups on CVE's are not going to be suitable for anything approaching front-line combat and will need considerable training (and possibly other work) before the CVE's and their planes can be employed effectively in even a support or escort role.

I think I am operating under the classic "Necessity is the mother of invention" strategy. Not knowing how or best to use assets means I define what I need and then insert the asset into that role. As for the CVEs, I was unaware of what a VR group exists to do. So I subdivided the two VR groups on Copahee into six 9 plane detachments, three of VF and three of VB, placing two fighter and one bomber on the ship and distributing the other 27 planes to front line bases. The two CVEs backstopped the 3 cvs attacking the enemy. Long Island has carried detachments of fighters and bombers from Lexington, which were abandoned all around Noumea in January when Lex bought it. Their pilots are on average over 70% exp. Although Long Island helped turn back an invasion at Dutch Harbor in late June, she took some damage and spent a month in shipyard at Seattle before joining with Copahee and coming south. Copahee's planes shot down a number of bombers trying to sink APs. A measure used in desperation. But when the three CVs turned to return to Noumea they took all the planes from the VRs on the front line airfields. Ah hah, so that is how VR squadrons are to be used. So I will gather up copahee's split groups and head back to SD to replenish the squadrons, if possible. Meanwhile the two new CVEs at Tacoma will team up with escorts on the way and head to PH to replenish the fighters and bombers on the three damaged CVs--York with 40 flotation damage, but the others with only system damage. All three need to upgrade as well. Looks like a good time to do it too. Then the CVEs will go back and get more planes.

I have sent four very fast APs (+20 knots) to SF to pick up the forty-third Division and take it to Brisbane. Am waiting for more fighter and bomber squadrons to arrive. Am running out of both aviation support and planes for all the new bases being built in the SOPAC operations area. All in all, it is a learning experience. Am having fun, but then the carriers are still afloat. Johnjohn.

johnjohn,

Looks as if you have some reorganization of your CV air groups to do.

Get the upgrades done on those CV's. Even with the 1942 upgrades, the carriers gain additional flak and improved radar. While the additional flak in itself is not necessarily decisive, there is a slight chance it could prove the difference between having or losing the carrier. The improved radar largely speaks for itself...

Also don't ignore ship upgrade levels on the DD's, cruisers and BB's escorting the carriers. Upgrades giving these ships added flak and radar also provide additional AA protection and detection capability for a CV they're escorting.

I've been keeping my CV's at home. All are on the US West Coast receiving or due to receive upgrades. CV's Lexington and Saratoga are just starting 6/42 upgrades. Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet all have 7/42 upgrades. I also have all available first-line cruisers and DD's current with their upgrades. The more flak, radar and other equipment these ships have when it's time to go after the KB, the better. As with the other Allied air forces, USN carrier pilots are in full training mode, virtually every available "training slot" in a squadron that can be occupied by a pilot is occupied by one.

At this point in the campaign I'm basically operating no USN surface combat or bombardment TF's and have few or no short-term plans to do so until the balance of carrier forces in the Pacific theatres is tipped in the Allied favor (i.e. the KB no longer exists or what's left of it is no longer a major "player" in events). In a surface combat or bombardment role at this time in the campaign, at best there is little for first-line US combat ships to do that would significantly impact events, at worst they're cannon fodder for the KB if it happens to show up.

My present allocation of first-line USN surface combat ships (DD, crusers, fast BB's) is almost exclusively devoted to providing escorts in carrier TF's with a relatively small number of DD's providing escort to transport convoys. Current plans are to continue this practice as long as the KB remains the main Japanese opponent for the USN.

Summary of Operations 6/01/42

6/42 Ship Upgrades: Activity for this is now or soon will be beginning at all Allied shipyards. It appears the 6/42 upgrades include a large number of ships, though a large proportion of the ships involved are transports and various auxiliaries.

Two US fleet CV’s (Lexington & Saratoga) and some DD classes have 6/42 upgrades, upgrading of these ships receiving first priority and set to begin immediately.

Handling of upgrades for transports and auxiliary ships is being done based on current location and activity of ships, need for individual ships to be available for operational missions, available shipyard capacity, etc. Some older US BB classes are also in the 6/42 ship upgrade, these ships will likely receive lower priority as the need for their availability in combat operations is rather low at the moment.

Some movement of ships due for upgrade to distribute them among various shipyards is also in the planning stages. Only high-priority 6/42 ship upgrades are planned at Pearl Harbor to keep shipyard capacity reserved for emergency repairs – most ships now at Pearl Harbor due for 6/42 upgrade will gradually be dispatched to the mainland US.

Japanese Home Islands: US sub Cuttlefish heavily damaged in attack by Jap ASW air patrol (Ki-21 Sally) ESE of Aogashima. SS Cuttlefish is expected to limp home to Pearl Harbor for some shipyard repair time.

...6/42 Ship Upgrades: Activity for this is now or soon will be beginning at all Allied shipyards.

Only high-priority 6/42 ship upgrades are planned at Pearl Harbor to keep shipyard capacity reserved for emergency repairs – most ships now at Pearl Harbor due for 6/42 upgrade will gradually be dispatched to the mainland US....

You don't have to worry about distributing your ships to various shipyards on the West Coast in order to spread out the upgrade workload.

When you click on the upgraded class, you are told what size shipyard is required for the upgrade.

1. If the specified shipyard size is none, then the upgrade can be done at a suitably sized port (basically port size cubed > ship tonnage/100). You just have to anchor (=disband) the ship into the port.

2. If a shipyard size is specified then the upgrade will only commence if the ship is anchored in a port with a shipyard equal to or greater than the specified upgrade size. However, there is no requirement for the ship to be in the shipyard whilst the upgrade is being carried out. Nothing prevents you from moving a ship out of the shipyard to pierside for the duration of the ship's unavailability due to the upgrade work.

There are reasons why you may not wish to have too many ships at Pearl Harbor undertaking an upgrade. Wanting to maintain shipyard capacity for other tasks is certainly not one because no ship at Pearl Harbor which is being upgraded needs to be in the shipyard for that purpose.

Alfred, thanks for the advice. I actually do that with my upgrades. Where I am getting into trouble as a first time player is learning what some of the ships can do. Since I don't always know, I experiment. WNeumann is quite helpful with his advice, although he is battling a real opponent, not the AI nor has he sunk half the jap fleet. Thus I may more adventurious at this point. What I am presently doing is moving a three carrier TF which has depleted some of its air groups to PH to refit. Some of the carriers missed 42 updates, so they will get them now as they get repaired. CVEs are bringing replacement a/c to PH to help replenish the air groups. Yorktown will need to go into the yard, she has some major damage. The others will pony up to the pierside to fix their system needs. All will update at least once. Sara got her 6/42 update, so she is getting the next one. Yorktown and Enterprise will undergo 10/42 upgrades.

Wasp and Hornet are now at Noumea, Long Island and Copahee are heading back to SD, in part to escort the remaining parts of the 3rd USMC Div to Hawaii and then to bring Joe Foss and his squadron forward. My problem at PH is two of the three old BBs have 70+ floatation damage and need over a year to fix it. I am afraid to ship them to the WC in this condition, so PH shipyard is congested as a result. BTW, the third BB is heading to SF for additional repairs. I think she can get there. I hope to get the floatation damage down below 50 on the other two and then ship them to SF. Anyway I look at it, both are out of action for up to two years at this point. Mississippi, the third BB, should be repaired in about 6 months. Pennsylvania and Colorado are undergoing repairs on WC and nearly ready to return to action. Idaho and Nevada are at Noumea. Every other old lady is sunk. All the fast BBs are escorting the CVs. Destroyers and Cruisers are regularly updated, and since I have used them extensively in repelling the enemy (3 CVs sunk, 6 BBs sunk, 13 CAs sunk, 12 CLs sunk, 37 DDs sunk, numerous supply and small fry sunk). Noumea is a class 7 port, 9 AF. Luganville a 3/5, Ndeni a 1/3, listing AF last. PH is a 9/9 as are all the wc ports. I have plenty of places where I can do upgrades, but for the CVs I prefer PH. It is just a safer place right now. Johnjohn. Somebody wake me when Halsey is done chewing out that Ensign.
