Wow! Look at those Kate and Val losses. As this is WITP Scenario 2 it's going to takes days, maybe even a full week to fully reload the KB again! Seriously, I wonder how the KB's "quality of pilot" is fairing?

His original PH raid pilots will be long dead by now. In fact just about every pilot will probably have 50 overall exp level and 70 specfic skill (Air/NavB/Torpedo). These are still quite deadly in a CV battle..........

The scenario is irrelevent in the matter of pilot training, but of course a/c production numbers are higher in 2.

Breaking news.

We lost 3 RN BBs today, plus 2 RN CAs, 2 CLs and several minor ships...most of it due to a mistake of mine, while the Ramille got simply unlucky fighting against 6 japanese DDs in single ship TF at Tulagi....

That's why I said to go in with DDs first. DDs are very hard to hit with torpedoes - and as you've found out so painfully, BBs aren't.

And BTW - when your DDs are with your BBs your DDs only go as fast as your BBs, and so they become much more vulnerable to torpedoes.

As far as Ramilles goes - the Game favours fast ships over slower ships in battle, so 30 knot DDs will usually kill 21 knot BBs.

Keep your slow BBs at home, or use them to escort Supply/Fuel TFs well back from the Front. You'll want to have a few of them in 1944/1945 when you are invading atolls.

Yes guys, i was an idiot. Admit that. Been too "easy" and every time you're easy this game (and Rader) punishes you.

I'll do a comprehensive summery of the "fatal" day later.

However i announce that the aerial battle for Karachi is now lost. During the last 2 weeks we've not been able to fight back anymore...we're losing far too many planes and killing far too few planes...and my numbers are so small that now he can freely bomb me to dust without fearing anymore my fighters...i have to retire them from the front...no other choices... Karachi is safe however and we'll be back as soon as we're gonna be able to fight back again.

He is using multiple one ship DD TFs on purpose? If so I was wrong and the guy is total cheese. I would say that is about as gamey as it comes if he is doing it. on purpose.

I agree. Looks like a ploy to use up all your TFs Op points and therefore more likely to leave it in range of his Netty's come daylight.....

I allow and use one ship TF only for Dec 41 when the Allies are in headlong retreat from manila and other places. Afterwards, I will use 2 or 3 ship TF even as picket ships as the AI will often ignore one ship TF and not launch attacks against them.

This tactic was very gamey, IMO. He should have used 4 two ship SC TF vs 8 single ship TF.

He wanted to sweep my PTs to say the truth... I admit that i changed my PTs disposition after the what ADB told me (about their effectiveness).
If it's gamey to use single DD TFs so it's game to flood a base with multiple 2 PTs TFs...so i'm guilty as much as he is...

So ok, Jan 25 and 26 went as you've seen...Karachi bombed to dust and we lost the Royal Navy all at once...
Plus he swept Tulagi and Lunga with his KB Zeros (the KB wasn't at Truk but at Rabaul and now she's operating right 1 hex west of Shortland)

Battles raged fiercely and we defended pretty well our bases.

Jan 27, 28 1942

He's up to something. Recon Says he massed 250 fighters at Shortland and the KB is still there (i flooded the hex with 4 subs...guess what!? None of them fired a single shot!!!! Why in the world his subs always fire and my very seldom do!?)
I spotted BBs at Shortland too... I think he's gonna do one of his typical combined move. Sweeping, bombing, naval bombing and KB raiding all at once!
-...so....i moved back all my fighters to Ndani. Moved all my 2Es, SDBs and transports back to Lungaville, leaving only 70 4Es at Ndani along with 250 fighters. What remains of my 3 old battlewagons are retiring towards Suva, heavily escorted, while a SCTF (CL Trenton with 4 modern DDs as escort, with best leaders and cpts) will move at flank speed to Tulagi. let's see if i can catch some of his raider with a fast and agile TF.

He moved units to Munda...(which is still a dot base)...he wanna build up another chain of fortified island!...i will try to do the same around Ndani and south of Lunga...let's see what i can do...

CVs are approaching Pago Pago right now, while the Hornet is moving to PH...

Tomorrow we'll bomb again Russell Island to keep it closed, while we're planning a counter para-drop at rennell Island where we're gonna move base forces and some little infantry.

We need to delay him as much as i can and, at the same time, reinforce Tulagi.

We decided to remain and fight at Karachi...we cannot let him move all those air forces (1000+ airplanes) to the pacific!

However my DDs totally failed to screen the big ships...they never acted as true DDs...don't know if it was just bad luck or the engine doesn't hold well this kind of naval fights

Thanks for the welcome Greyjoy- I've been reading your AAR for quite a while now- lurking. I'm also playing scen 2 as the allies (against FatR) and you're further along in your campaign so it's a useful "heads up" for me- and a good read (thankfully you don't spam everything with combat reports- you have a more balanced style).

Cheers,

Daniel

Oh Good Lord... another terrible turn.

2 CVE torpedoed by subs (one sunk and the other one so badly damaged that she won't last long)...litterarly flooding the area around Pago Pago... Despite all my efforts (naval escorts, ASW TFs, and dedicated air patrolled ASW corridors) his subs roam freely on my sealanes...

While i lost 7 subs with 3 more damaged in the last 2 turns around the Solomons...

And the bad luck continues...we moved towards Tulagi...and 2 of my DDs got hit by mines south of Lunga (one sunk and the other one nearly)...while my mines at Shortland didn't hit a damned thing

breath, breath GJ....now calm and focused again...

Mine hits don't necessarily appear in the combat replay or the ingame combat report. For some reason you need to check the text file generated. This is true for some of the odder sorts of CD fire as well.

I've noticed that Saros! Thx for sharing!

Gods be good! ...the loss of 2 CVEs due to subs really hurts! And i feel harmless against his wolves...

However the day didn't bring only bad news. The last 2 days of Jan also saw a some good success of my fighters over Tulagi. We shot down more than 170 enemy planes, losing only 15 of mines.
The Situation isn't improving tough...Tulagi remains a problem and i'm not able to resupply it anymore!...seems that the engine, even if i have fighters based there doesn't allow me to use my C47s when he's LRCAPPING my base...they never fly and they're not anymore reported on the OpReport...

My ships have problems too (they keep retiring due to a naval threat...but i have PTs there...they should be able to locate if there's an enemy......gotta understand what's going on...and fast!

It hurts the fact that every day you have to admit that he's always one step beyond you. He understands when you move your capital ships. he always understands and foresees their possible route. While i never, never, never do the same.

I probably well understood the aerial combat, while for what concerns ships i'm really still a noob

Did you not fly CAP for those RN ships? Those that were coming down from Aden.

You should always do that unless you just forgot which is "human error".

Do you guys have houserules in place regarding troop withdrawals from China?

It seems to me he has brought a lot of units from there. I do hope he is using PP for these?

As for the solomons. Personally feel that those single DD's was not good play but instead he took advantage of game mechanics here.

Used your operational points that way and "ambushed" you. Nasty trick but as long as you are fine with it that is important.

If I were you I would start taking serious look at Russian front. I feel he will not wait for 1945's there.

GreyJoy: You've done the impossible: you've made this even more entertaining. It's tough to keep up with this fine AAR.

When it comes to retiring due to naval threat, have you tried putting those TFs on "direct" and "absolute" movement? Also, you've probably thought of this, but I put my TBFs and SBDs on 20-30% search and 20-30% ASW when transiting behind the front lines in an attempt to minimize sub attacks. Once somebody commented that 8 or more DDs in a CV TF will keep subs away--I usually try to use 10 or more, which of course isn't easy early on (with plenty of DEs in the CVE TFs). Also, a few DEs are great in slow BB TFs since their speed matches.

I would use your CVs, but only in a situation where you know the KB's decks have been swept of a good chunk of airframes and out of Nettie range. As Elmer Fudd would say: "Be vewy, vewy careful."

Cheers,
CC

Thx mate!
No, i tried to do a suprise movement. But i was an idiot. Didn't think about the possible consequences...too focused on the Solomons...and i paid the full price of my incompetence and airiness!

Yes, he's using PPs but with all china in his hands and no possible threats on that theatre he's free to do whatever he wants with his units...

About Russia. Yes, i started training my pilots since the first day and building forts and moving supplies back to north. Not much more i can do for the moment.

Thx CC.

Just to be clear: i used every possible mean in order to keep his subs away.

The CVEs TF had 120 ASW points (more than 15 DDs) and was followed by a dedicated ASW TF composed by 1DD and 3 SCs. 27 TBDs were flying 50 Naval and 50 ASW at 3 hexes range and had 6 Kingfisher flying even at night on naval search... but he simply had too many subs in the right place...i counted at least 10 of them in 3 hexes.
Oh and i had 18 patrol planes flying at 1000 ft on a 30 degrees search arc covering exactly the corridor of my CV+CVEs.... nothing seems to stop those subs...nothing

My CVs are covered in the same way...but now i feel really unsafe...he will be looking for them and track them all the way wherever i'll move them... and, God be good, i can never do the same! Everytime i get closer than 6 hexes from one of his base my sub gets sunk, no matter what, by his Helens ASW.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 31, Feb 01 43

Ok, here's the report of the last 2 days.

At Karachi he has completely taken controll of the skies. I'm abbandoning any possible idea of fighting him back. I'll leave my fighters there as long as possible - and if you ask me why i tell you that it's because i cannot let those 1400 enemy planes to get back to the pacific! - but without P-38s it's impossible to stand those hordes of Zeros and Tojos...

At Tulagi he sent a number of fighters on sweep, followed by an heavily escorted 130+ Helens formation. We did chew them!.
Tulagi supply depots however are suffering badly...we're back to 13k supplies cause we're not able to re-supply the base by air no more (why????)

My 4Es levelled again Russell Island, preceeded by P-38s on sweep mission that killed at least 6 or 7 zeros and oscars on LRCAP.

The KB retired to Rabaul again. For sure he's refilling again his air groups.

I've sent subs around Truk following NY59Giant suggestion...till now no contacts.

My CVs will be approaching Suva tomorrow. Heavy Air ASW ordered (more than 100 LBA planes dedicated), minesweeping too.

Now i'm 2 CVEs short (lost 50 fighters and pilots too) and the odds are again badly against me. I'll have to be even more cautious... the sense of feeling unsafe everywhere i move is really a bad feeling...

At Tulagi the last week saw no fightings. As far as i can tell he's not evacuating nor resuppliyng his units (didn't intercept any transport plane so far). For sure he's getting ready for another big push and i have to be ready. Gotta find new solutions to resupply and reinforce my garrisons.

I now ordered to 2 DDs to go and station at Tulagi, under our CAP (100 fighters strong). Let's see if my xAKs will so decide to enter in Tulagi waters (till now they've been refusing to do so despite i gave them precise orderes to go directly to Tulagi and to not to care about any threat...)

The situation looks worse than last week. The feeling that i was gaining a "new grip" melted like snow in the sun with the last naval debacles (just to remember: i lost 3 BBs, 2CAs, 3 CLs and 5 DDs in the last week, plus 2CVEs and several xAKs).
Rader seems always to be focused and determined and he always has the overall situation under his full controll.

However i need to hold on to the hope of a brighter tomorrow. Things cannot always go so wrong!

Conerning the Corsair i have to say that i'm not impressed at all. The plane is better than the F4F no doubt, but the Spits Vc for ex is defenetly better and in my game it isn't showing no where the strenght it had in RL.
That's probably because Corsair was a good plane, but not THE plane. His successes related mainly in the way the USN and USMC units started to use it...and it's service rate is so bad that it's a pain to make it flying for a decent period of time!

Give me the SpitVc all the way! :-)

This is a good machine indeed. The Australian using it are doing wonders in the Solomons.

i will be honest, have only popped in now and then.

is it true that your opponent "grew" his airgroup sizes by placing them on carriers, then once grown, took them off again?
