I have just started Neptune's inferno, and so far so good - it is written in a nice, readable style (if perhaps a little wordy).

I have just finished The Battle For Norway - and before that - The German Invasion of Norway. I thoroughly recommend these two tomes - both of which concentrate mainly on the naval battles. Only complaints are: they could do with a few more maps and also the author has a little problem with chronology when telling the story. However, these are minor irritations - these are brilliantly researched and written stories on one of the most interesting operations of WWII.

Have you read Hitler's Preemptive war? It was free for kindle a few months back. The Norwegian campaign wasn't something I knew too much about but I learnt a lot from that book.
Warspite1

No I haven't - but those books have really whetted my appetite to learn more on the subject. Geirr Haarr has done such a great job on the naval war aspect, I am now interested in a more detailed look at ground operations - does HPW look at this in detail?

Bonus payment arrived today!   Feeling flush, although I don't know what to spend it on.  No doubt Mrs D will not approve of it whatever it is.

EDIT:
In fact I want this...

On a last note re: the Martian's question.

I will admit as was already pointed out by one reader who did enjoy "Neptune", If one is indeed 'looking for a story' then the book isn't as bad a choice as it was for me.

For example, i'm currently almost done with "The Tsar's Last Armada" by Constantine Pleshakov. It's about the saga of the 2nd Pacific Squadron as it formed, traveled and died on the way from St. Petersburg to Tsunshima.

Reviews on this book are split down the middle. Some love it, some hate it. Mostly the hate side complaints revolve around what they consider 'useless details' such as the sexual habits of some of the Romanovs etc. and/or a lack of technical details about the ships or the battle itself. These are indeed valid complaints.

However, having read "Rising Sun, Tumbling Bear" which is a more dry analytical account of the Russo-Japanese war, I find that i am enjoying the book because it is very immersive and gives the reader a good understanding of the time period as well as how things were for the Russian sailors during their hellish voyage. It also provides some great insight into Rozhestvensky the man and the Admiral. I don't detect alot of or any major errors except that the author seems to not quite have grasped the nature of how radio was used in that period. Also, given the book is specifically stated as being "from the Russian perspective" and limits itself to the Baltic Fleet's journey, i guess i'm more forgiving vs. Neptune which is advertised as the latest greatest accounting of the surface *campaign* around Guadalcanal. Also the author doesn't appear to be biased. Some readers accuse him of Anglo-envy but i don't see it as that but rather as him trying to portray how Russians of the time period viewed the English and their RN.

What did you think of "The Fleet That Had To Die" by Richard Hough? I read that when I was in junior high, so I don't recall too much of the details...

Dilemma time.  Do I spend $200 US on a boardgame or walk away and spend it elsewhere?  It's a big wedge o' cash after all.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, mate, but I suggest putting it aside in a rainy day fund.

You're a young guy with a wee one and an uncertain job future by your own admission. $200 USD can be handy in a pinch. You'd feel like a first class twat if you needed something for your kid whilest you were between jobs or in the midst of a move and couldn't provide for it. In this context $200 is way too much money to plunk down on a board game, IMO.

Then again, I typically vote for the 'sensible party' over the silly or very silly party when it comes to financial matters.

Mrs. Chickenboy and I do not agree on matters of religion or politics, but we are in lockstep with regards to financial matters. I've never argued less with anyone than with her about money: spending, saving, taxation and earnings. So, it's unlikely that she would criticize or lament our differing monetary sensibilities-because we really don't have 'em.

Now, if we're talking politics or religion-THOSE are good grounds for an argument.

Aye, the rainy day fund idea is a sensible one indeed. Cheers for the input.

I've got a rainy day fund set up which generally gets between 25-33% of my spendable cash each month (works out at about 17% of my annual salary before the RAF take off taxes etc). I'm making plans on the assumption that I'll be getting the boot in Jan 2013, so I'm looking into the job market now and I hope to have a job lined up next summer during my terminal leave.

I've just stuck the vast majority of my recent bonus in the fund as well, which is the only reason I'm even contemplating spending the money. Mrs D is happy with me having spending money as I've only managed to spend £30 on myself in the last two months.

Yeah. He wants to know if your "turning tricks" on the side.

No seriously , he's wondering "How are you"? (you've got to love American slang. BTW, you don't want to know about "Turning tricks".)

Just an expression. "What's going on?"; "How's things?"; "What's up?"; "What be the haps?"; "What it be, homey?"; "Dude?"; "S'up?" are all synonymous with casual expressions of friendly inquiry into another's goings on.

Speaking of board games, any that you want to dust off for the upcoming BBB?

I will bring 'Family Business' along with me-Lou will appreciate that, I suspect. She's OK with foul language, in a bad Chicago-style accent isn't she?

Speaking of board games, I found out that the "bug" in the Steel Wolves VASSAL module is not really a bug at all.

It had seemed that some of the target pools would gradually empty themselves, but it was simply the return function from the combat display that "missed". It's definitely to be lived with, once I found out where the pieces ended up.

Lou OK with foul language? This is the lady whose CPO once asked me if I'd talk to her about HER language. It was disturbing her sailors! (I think in another life she was a boatswain's mate). She's fine with games. And she's a HUGE movie nut.

A more important question is what would you like to do? We know the SAC museum , shooting and the Planes at Offut, and I'm hoping that the river will be down enough so we could see "Freedom Park". USS Hazard (MSW) , the Marlin (SST-actually a training submarine) and various vehicles and such. But let me know what your intrest are.
