On thing I have noticed about the game is how boring the exploration and colonization phase is compared to other 4X games. I want more monsters,, at least 5 more, each unique in some way, and if possible some passive monsters, that violent monsters would occasionally be seen hunting and attacking that would also prefer over ships if they are present, like space whales or something. That would make things rather interesting.

And on a note of what the new monsters can be one could be a monster like a space fly that just buzz around some asteroid fields that are passive until a asteroid miner or a construction ship disturbs the large asteroid that the flys call their nest then they swarm the intruding ship making point defense and fighter ships very important to dissipate the swarm. Then at least 1 UBER monster that is powerful as well as very rare and when killed then the body will stay floating lifelessly in space for a short time allowing mining ships or construction ships to place mining stations on the beast to mine a rare luxury item that is found in the monsters body, not random, just a luxury Item that you think would make sense being in a giant space monster.

Finally some random events to liven up the galaxy more, strange wormholes that when flown near will collapse then make the ship disappear, which would make a valid excuse why you find random abandoned ships, especially those of your own race, as in they would be because of the wormhole spewing them out in the middle of nowhere sapped of energy and forced to be abandoned. Then when it comes to colonization some planets could have primitive races found on them or at least some other things other than ruins and rare resources. And also maybe due to a rare circumstance that when a planet is invaded there is a chance that depending on the defending races ingenuity there is always a random but rare chance that maybe a strategy or a great war hero could cause the defending troops to kill off a large amount of the attacking forces either causing a small enough amount of troops remaining that the defending troops will actually have a chance and win the fight or other possibilities. Basically something that tips the scale making a battle that at first was hopeless then became winnable. Home worlds or capitals would have the highest chance of this happening due to the whole "defend the homeland" deal.

Then finally just some random events that are just randomly performed to a specific planet, system, entire race, or even the whole galaxy that could cause many both small and game changing things ranging from a colony simply losing some population due to a natural event on the planet to the loss of the colony itself too a disease spreading across an empire that causes distress and distraught until a cure is randomly found but at a reasonable time depending on the amount of research taking place in the empire then finally to big events like a whole system going supernova or something even more galaxy involving like a great extra-dimensional monster appears that will go from colony to colony destroying them until brought down a large fleet or allied up against.

Allot of these was inspired by random events in other 4X games and I am just wanting more randomness and a more real sense of really exploring the unknown and have a more dynamic experience. PLease dont bash me if alot of this is not possible due to the current mod support, I dont have a clue and I admit to that, I just want to through these ideas out there, and sorry for the wall of text.

More monsters?
OK sure for variety but monsters hunting other monsters?

This is a space game, the idea that there are all these creatures going around space out there is a bit too far fetched for my imagination. I can tolerate the normal amount Distant Worlds has particularly because they fit in to the story but if space became more busy it wouldn't feel much like space.

That said I've been asking for interesting random events for a long time. Stuff that we wouldn't see every game but that will cause big gameplay impacts that could really make things interesting.
I listed a whole bunch of ideas in a previous thread asking what was wanted from DW the most in future expansions.

First of all, not going to bash you 'cos these are some cool ideas.

However, none of it is possible currently. The next expansion will have more monsters and they'll have some nice new abilities. Beyond that, we don't know much more.

I really like the idea of monsters hunting other monsters. I'm a Trekkie, so I'd like as many different kinds of monster varieties as possible.

Random story and exploration events is something that many of us have asked for. It's unkown if we'll be getting any improvements in this area.

If you haven't already done so, uberknight, go and make your vote on the Distant Worlds poll, link is in my signature.

That reminds me, if they considered your polls for this expansion will they consider them for the next ones as well? Or we'll need new polls also? I think the latter is more probable, not that I want to make you the official poll master

I'm with you here. Space is a near 0 kelvin vacuum. I turn the monsters off, its a little too much for me to accept things can live floating in the vacuum.

Depends on how you define life

Well, unless something lives as a free floating energy mass (and even that still must follow the laws of physics) then they are made up of atomic particles...atomic particles that cease to move at 0 kelvin (hence why it is called absolute zero). So as you can see, even with my weak knowledge of physics, I can't put aside what I know to be true.

It comes down to being able to suspend your disbelief...and with the monsters I'm just unable to do that easily.

On the other hand, a machine type 'monster' (think Reapers from Mass Effect) I could more easily accept. Something mechanical has a power source, such as a reactor and could produce its own very necessary heat and energy.

Hey Shark7, that's not entirely true. The cosmic microwave background radiation means that the temperature of the universe is higher than absolute zero. Of course, it's much higher than this inside star systems.

I don't believe there is enough evidence to throw out the possibility of space dwelling organisms, but I do think they would be extremely rare and probably on the scale of bacteria.

For modding, since this is the modders forum, many sci-fi themes have space creatures, so they should be in the game IMO.

Exactly....even if science limits us to bacteria all we need is a little doubt to free the imagination. What if those monsters were genetically engineered?

What if they caught a whiff of Data's baby's nappies (diapers)? A strange chemical/biological reaction might occur?

Ok joking aside, we've discovered life on our own planet that defies belief. Aquatic life where no sun light is present miles below the surface. There's even a type of bacteria that subsists on Arsnic, something that supposedly is poisonous to all life.

That's why it's easy to infiltrate his Cargo Bay, he's always
orating at the Romulan Imperial Senate about one thing or another!
(Between his modding time and occasional nips of vintage ale of course)

Indeed.

As too the weird life on our own planet, yep, but always inside atmosphere.

What is an atmosphere, if not a collection of gases at different temperatures? With organisms living in such harsh conditions on our own world, it's only a small leap to assume that they can exist in harsh conditions in space, where gases and different temperatures are also present. Our own findings here on earth show that life will exist where it can. It finds a way.

I just checked and it seems that bacteria does in fact survive the vacuum of space, so that's pretty cool.

Basically they took a bunch of rocks from the south coast of England and put them on the exterior of the International Space Station. Some of the bacteria present in the rocks survived!

And what Igard mentioned earlier is what scientists suspect it happens in the deep oceans of Europa (Jupiter's moon). That makes me wanna read Clarke's Odyssey series all over again.

I love how I generated such a healthy debate on space-faring life, :D. But anyways, yes Igard, due to reading a past posts of yours, I have ran across the link in your signature. ALOT of what was in the poll I would love to see in the game, but I ended up on voting for more than the 8 limit and oddly it let me :/, ohh well.

Regardless of if life in the vacuum of space is possible this is Sci-fi, and I like to think that life is powerful enough to be able to thrive in such hopeless environments, it just always makes for a better story.

Has anyone read that novel Larklight? It is very mild and reminds me of the movie Treasure Planet, But the book is a very imaginative read but is EXTREMELY far-fetched since it describes man-kind discovering faster-than-light travel during the 1800s. But overall, its very interesting in how insane it flexes your imagination since it basically describes what a man during that time would have thought of space, INCLUDING space-faring creatures.

Np Data, I have to warn you though, its more on the basis of a novel you would read to your kid and also being an 8th grade level Novel, but dont let that throw you off, their is alot in the book that would go WAY over a kids head anyway. I was forced to read it when we moved and did not have ANYTHING to do until we unpacked everything, but was glad I did. And regardless of its Disney-like charm its a really good book, plenty of extra sketchings here and their to help you figure out how some place looks or how the characters look and the overall story structure is very imaginative. In fact im surprised it didnt end up as a disney movie. Im 19 and found the book very good.
