With the awful goings on in Norway, I'm about a week behind here. Forgive the tardiness...

Years ago there was a gang of raccoons terrorizing my neighborhood, killing several cats. My two actually got into a fight with two of them one night and got badly chewed up. The only reasons they lived is that I heard the 2AM fight and came out to break it up. Oh - and the fact that my cats weighed about 20lbs each helped! They did have to go to the vet to get their butts patched up...

Yes. I have enormous respect for the dentition of racoons, possums and skunks. Cats are simply outclassed in these cases. Bad animal to pick a fight with.

BTW, you can usually tell the demeanor of cats in fights by the location of their injuries. Cats that stand face to face and duke it out (whilest getting nailed) have the majority of their injuries on their forequarters, face, head and forelimbs. Those that try to run but get nailed from behind have most of their injuries on their backside. Just sayin'.

Yeah, cats lose an even fight, but two on one...I'd give it even odds.

Now if the cats run, no waddling little coon is going to catch them, guaranteed.

You actually have that wrong. Cats will stand sideways staring at their opponents, hissing and growling. In this case the raccoons were smart enough to go for the end with fewer sharp pointy things... I know because the cats were still standing there (bleeding) in the "stare down" position when I came charging out to chase away the raccoons.

Cats will roll on their backs and use their hind legs (with sharp pointy things extended) to gut their opponents. Seen it many times. Just not against raccoons. Coons bring a weight advantage and a longer bite to the fray so it's not a given either way. Cats are nasty in a fight (I've seen them whoop big dogs numerous times) but they tend to follow the live-to-fight-another-day philosophy.

Comic convention attended by adults
27-07-11

THE world's largest gathering of picture-story fans is teeming with adults, it has emerged.

Experts have long maintained that comics, which can be broadly defined as shiny pamphlets containing colourful drawings of flying men from space and vocabulary such as 'BAMF!' and 'Aaaaarp!', are for children.

Yet despite this, an estimated 98% of attendees at San Diego's Comic-Con 2011 are old enough to pay income tax and go to bed at a time of their own choosing.

Professor Henry Brubaker of the Institute for Studies, who is at the event, said: "After extensive searching, I thought I finally saw a kid this afternoon. Turns out it was a middle-aged dwarf dressed as an ewok, which is a hair-covered creature from the popular children's film Return of the Jedi.

"Yesterday I saw a middle-aged man pay $5000 for a bag of Patrick Stewart's bum fluff, a gang of bitter divorcees sporting robot claws and a pair of railway engineers kissing with tongues while disguised as giant foxes."

He added: "There was also a room with 500 adults in it, discussing 'story arcs' in Spiderman. I've no idea what a 'story arc' is but apparently it's very grown-up and complicated."

Cultural analyst Nikki Hollis said: "If you ask me, Watchmen is just Bash Street Kids with hovering blue penises.

"And I don't care how 'dark' the new Batman film's going to be, it's still about a man who dresses up as a bat.

"They will no doubt claim that dressing up as a bat is a 'metaphor', but we know that it's just a man in a bat suit. With pointy ears."

Meanwhile, there was chaos at a Buffy the Vampire Slayer discussion panel when a group of men in their mid 40s had a violent argument about the correct usage of the word 'mythos'.

He symbolises the obsessive nature of revenge

Dixie, I'm sure that there's lots of overlap amongst those here. Remember that the first sales of WiTP were at GenCon, a 'multi-purpose' convention in Ohio. Think there were any comic geeks there?

Just finished Turn 1 of a restart of the Steel Wolves grand campaign, and for the first time EVAH, I was ahead of the curve!

252,000 tons sunk in the month of September, 1939. HMS Furious sunk by a mine. No U-Boats lost. Maximum number of victory points scored (10).

It won't last, obviously, but it's a solid start.

Sounds promising, how does BdU Terminus plan to throw away the tonnage war?

I restarted Silent War again. Five weeks in and it's looking good for the first tonnage check, mostly down to the exploits of USS Triton sinking a pair of 5000t freighters. Two Dutch subs have been lost in the Java Sea though, a shame as they suck slightly less than their USN counterparts.
