I feel guilty for changing the wonderful unit graphics but I started doing NATO counters just to see what will happen. Here's a "work in progress" shot of my NATO counter project.

The counters have some advantages:

Easy identification of unit type due to the NATO symbol
Easy identification of nationality due to the counter color
Easy identification of equipment due to the text

Disadvantages are:

Familiarity with NATO symbols are necessary
Shared unit graphics between countries will sometimes give you a non-matching counter color
Shared unit graphics between equipment will sometimes give you the wrong text

I am just about 60% though replacing the standard unit graphics. Afterwards, I'll find the counters that are shared between countries and equipment and make unique graphics.

I will not be changing the graphics for ground structures, aircraft and ships.

Nice, I'm tempted to drop the (nice looking as they are) sprites to go back to the familiar NATO counters once this mod is completed.

I prefer sprites but putting my personal preferences aside, I think you did a fine job. My only suggestion you would change symbol from airborne to paratroopers or

Animated units?? errr no.. not here, go play some OG for animated .. I would say slightly moving mostly static units for this game.
I in fact think the counters are a great IDEA and for me would make the game play in this game lots better :-)

I was thinking, you could also try to see how it look with a border like the one from the strength plate. It would give a 3D aspect to the counter maybe.
It's just a suggestion, I hope you don't mind.
If you could also post in the Slitherine forum, I would appreciate it. I'm sure, there will be people who will be interested.
Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions.
To be fair to Dumnorix, I think he's a 3D modeler. This explains his bias.
Also can anyone suggest symbols for trains and rail guns?

Try this page. It has a rail symbol and an artillery symbol. For a rail gun I'd just combine the 2.

http://orbat.com/site/ww2/drleo/000_admin/009_symbols.html

You could also look at this page for WWII German style symbols.

Ok. Based on that page and the one in wiki, I don't know which AA and AT symbol to use.
AA: A letter "A" or
AT: A letter "V" or An inverted "V"

I guess I'll go use Barthheart's page since that's WW2 while the one from wikipedia is NATO (post-WW2).

Dude, the NATO counters are
When they're done you can get to work on turning the terrain graphics into a proper map.

No problem if you don't like it but it's the fast selling game we've ever released. Have you actually played it though - the negative comments are usually from people who havent tried it.

Here is what the press are saying.
91% - Gameshark - Editors Choice
9/10 - Onet.pl
9/10 - EntDepot - Editors Choice
8/10 - Gamespot "Panzer Corps is a rare gem."
8/10 - PC4War
88% - Gameokratie.de
88% - 7idGaming.de
85% - GameSquad.com
85% Gold Award - Gamestar Review (German)
85% - Looki.de
86% Gold Award - 4 Players (German)
80% - Digitally Downloaded "It's Stellar!" and "Panzer General is Back!"
85% - PC Gamer (Germany)
Quarter to Three
Rapid Fire Games Playtest (Video)
Gamers with Jobs Review (Podcast)
The Wargamer - Matrix, Slitherine and the Lordz Games Studios have done a superlative job not only of reviving a classic but improving it while keeping the original feel.
No High Scores - Panzer Corps has been such a pleasant surprise as it’s brought back a flood of great memories of nights eschewing college partying in order to try and achieve a major victory in France or to capture Moscow.
Investor-Verlag.de - "Recommendation of the Day"! After work, I'll start a scenario.

Metacritic has a 95% user review score in addition to this.

Don't feed the troll.

If you don't care about a game, well you don't care.
You don't waste time, effort and move on instead posting comments. Certainly you don't start posting in a mod forum in mod thread.

...while Mr. Ian McNeil is reading this. Better get back to work and finish an add-on quickly. Preferable with an Africa campaign and I don't care if Axis or Allies. I take it from both sides. Hmm that didn't sound right...
Because once I know every scenario upside down and got tired playing with my friends MP you will find out how much troll I can be if I get bored.

What does this mean....
Nothing as sinister as your sig gif!
I just like playing maps that look like S&T Mags or A.H. Boards.

The counters look good.
Modders take pride in their work. After long hours staring at the screen and pushing pixels, and sharing the work with others... the criticism is not warranted.
If you don't like 'em you don't use em.
Keep up the good work Jomni.

Agent S: I am with you about AH mapboards and S&T/SPI. I love the look and feel of "boardgame look" map mods.

Agree about jomini's counter mods. They look great. Please keep up the work jomini!

What i could say about these counters are they are nice at least you have under the unit what kind it is for example the round or oval shape is a tank but not everyone knows that since you put pziv or things like that it makes alot of since its very nice, but being a ww2 gamer i have almost every game out there im not into so much the symbols type game where you can stack and things.just makes the map to cluttered but again its a good strategy type game.there is all kinds of players just wish there wasnt so much bashing.you like your way keep it to yourself not to make others feel bad,ill still stick with what Dumnorix says i just like to see my playing pieces it makes a game more fun to play seeing a tiger tank or so on.i just want to say ill try anything as mods because its free and you guys take your time just wanted to say thanks

Sorry guys a lot has gotten in the way (like World of Tanks).
I'm currently hunting down the counters that are shared and making unique ones (changing the text or national colors) to replace them.
After that I will be ready for general consumption.

What would be nice, I think, is to have a toggle button to switch back and forth between the animations and counters. I like the animations, but it might help clarify crowded battlefields to switch to counters at certain times.

It would also be a nice option to toggle the enemy as counters, to help make the more visable.

I think this would be simple to do in future games.

How about both- zoom out for NATO counters.
P.S. In NATO a V is AT and an inverted V is AA.
