New version tomorrow, compatible with ongoing games.

What's new?

- a few minor bugs fixed
- some possible AI improvements for using options and affecting more units to theaters where an offensive is planned
- a new option for Southern Whites: request German help between June to November 1918. The option will bring you large resources, men and even artillery units, but the Allied intervention Level will drop from 2 to 4...

Interesting. Shouldn't it affect national morale though? As I understand most of the officers were very anti-German, and considered Bolsheviks to be merely German agents at first.

Krasnov Don Cossacks received an German help whose a part was destined ultimately for the Volunteer army. You're right about an-German posture of most Volunteer officers, the first being Denikin, but until his death, Alexiev, not represented in the game, and who was very influential, advocated for a DON first strategy rather than Kuban, with acceptance of German help, not by German inclination, but necessity, as until November 18 Allied help couldn't be really delivered, with the closure of Turkish straits and the Turkish presence in Transcaucasia.

Adding such a penalty isn't wrong in historical sense, but I prefer the option to be the choice of an immediate bonus to the cost of a more cautious Allied Intervention later. As AIL begins to 8, a drop to 4 to 6 makes reaching level 13 very difficult, and even 4 is close to the end of any material help. Of course, the AIl should climb a bit from June 18 to mid-19, but it's not sure, and slow most of the time.

What have you changed in the Baltic setup?

Posted White Admiral Kanin portrait in AGEod forum. Saw him seated in Sevastopol in one of Keke's saves, without armies&fleet portrait, so created also one. Naval commanders can be on shore

just modified the Yudenich option to become active only when conditions are met.

I've not yet integrated your portraits and new leaders because of a lack of time. It will come soon, with a new version of FY, this one necessitating maybe to start a new game.

Thanks

In the game he sucks as a commander, so it's better to leave him unemployed, I think.

OK, thanks. I thought that perhaps you had changed the order of battle

Regarding the portraits, there is no hurry. And just in case, do not feel obliged to use them . Use them only if you want, whenever you want,...

I think that there is an error in the modded portraits you use

White De Bode is using this portrait, a teacher of literature

http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Боде,_Александр_Адольфович

But this is not our man, is this one. The problem is that this portrait is awful

http://www.chestimeu.ru/temy/sudby/148-i-pehotnyi-kaspiiskii-polk/oficery-148-go-pehotnogo-kaspiiskogo-polka/de-bode-nikolai-andrevich.html

In the database in russian is right, Де Боде, Н.

Probably not needed to post them here as you visit AGEod forum. LOL, for one moment thought that it had been Pocus, not you who posted the Notepad joke, because he was using his other nick as Athena in that very moment

Oh, a wasted portrait then

He is considered as dispirited, but do not know why. In the russian wikipedia article there are not many details of his character, I understand that he was improving the defenses in the Baltic during WW1 and then commander of the Black Sea Fleet without more info

I WILL use them. In any case, a new portrait, even for an awful leader, is adding flavor.

For the rest, I won't comment. I continue to read the AGEOD forum, because I've yet to be aware of the patch/eengine progress and ambiance. I will just say how much this thread is informative about some things behind the Ageod doors...related to my wonderful exile. Yes , wonderful. You will never imagine how much more conmfortable is my situation today. Or taher yes, you can, by playing Fatal Years. FY is just the result of my complete freedom.

I stumbled upon recently an article of the author of Triumph of Cahoas boardgame on RCW summarizing more eloquantly than me the interest of RCW:

WHY A WARGAME ONTHE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR?

Communism is dead. Discredited. Tossed on a trash-heap. Why a wargame on its first "triumph"? Honestly, I couldn't care less about one more failed ideology (as differentiated from the political strategy related to winning the war). The attractiveness of designing a game on the Russian Civil War (RCW) involves:

A great story: A real cast of supporting characters — critical to any good drama

Interesting grand strategy: An excellent case study in the relationship of the political and military dimension of grand strategy

It's topical: There happens to be another war going on today, a civil war combined with multinational intervention arrayed against an ideology (militant Islamic totalitarian rule). The conflicts we grew up studying, World War II and the "Cold War", are no longer reflective of the type of conflict the USA or Western Powers are likely to experience in the foreseeable future.

Flavor: The internet and fall of "the wall" has opened up a treasure trove of mate-rial related to the RCW — pictures, books, posters — which, if incorporated into the look/feel of the game will heighten players interest in the subject matter

Ability to construct a challenging game: The nature of the conflict allows a designer to create a challenging, fun game, where participants can gain insight into "messy" modern conflicts

I moved in on Kharkov with a Corps to besiege a division-sized Red garrison there. Voroshilov moved in too, so it was an accidental meeting engagement, for which my Army HQ gave its support... Never seen a single battle so big.

What's the problem with supply unit capture?

They keep their original color when captured. Not a big trouble, but worth a correction.

After Kharkov? Orel?

The funny thing is that my forces retreated from the battle... still gained +9 national morale points, and officers got congratulated (more seniority). In another words it was excellently conducted battle against superior forces despite the retreat.

There's similarly sized clash going on in front of Tsaritsyn with less luck so far. There's no way I'm going to ultimately succeed, because the relative combat power of the Reds has deflated to 490, despite me building up the army as much as possible - money is always the problem.

Send me your save file. I may assure you the AI doesn't cheat on building and pays about the real costs. Now, if you're in 1920, a very large Red Army is normal, as in history. Cutting its supply lines is certainly a good step as it will maybe force it to get back or at least will weaken the stack.

This Red stack is weel balanced: infantry, artillery, Cheka units, aviation, supply, and certainly cavalry. A tough opponent.

I tried to counterattack on the weakened Ukraine Front but nothing happened: opposing armies ended up in the same region with no battle. Then I tried to "withdraw" with offensive posture (ie. move towards my regions) hoping that it would initiate a battle but the superstack appeared neatly pushing Volunteer Army aside with no battle. Last two turns attached.

So :

- Balts, Finland aren't involved in the war
- Poland has taken Minsk.
- Reds are keeping a medium force in the Noth as cover screen, the same against Poland

- Siberians are in complete disarray with very low NM, Perm retaken by Communits, and many Green revolts in their rear
- Reds are continuing some offensive in the area, with medium forces too.

- Reds have concentrated much of their Armies against...you, in Ukraine and around Tzaritsyn. They have to face some Green uprising too in Central Russia.

Conclusion: the situation is logical and could have happened in RL. You're the most dangerous enemy for Reds and they have acted consequently by massing the vast majority of their forces against you who is threatening Tzaritsyn, Kharkov and holding Kiev, with a nM of 120+ .

For money, I think from what I've seen you're not using all requisition policies available and the AIL is now very low ( we're in 1920, and Kolchak is about to be wiped, the time has come to normalize relations with red Russia).

You have the option to gamble with the Recognize independence option: dangerous but you could bring Balts into war, use Yudenich to attack Petrograd and force Reds to disperse their troops.

All in all, The Red AI has applied a correct strategy, isn't it?

Now, there are some minor things to fix: Poland NM is too low, Poland doesn't attack in Ukraine, and maybe some balancing in resources, conscripts and WSU is maybe to be considered.

Thanks for the file.

Yes, it did. I'm most disappointed with the Siberian effort. Not very helpful.

I have contemplated recognizing independences, but decided to use it as the last resort.

....

Fortunately for me, the "superstack" tried to attack across Dniepr, didn't succeed, and got almost surrounded.

Oh, and I have been pretty aggressive with requisitions. In fact this is the first game I have actively used them for collecting money. For a long time I managed to keep the Red relative strength under 200 by building the SW1 army, but the Red Army exploded in strength close to 500 in a few turns before the summer of 1920. There was nothing I could do about it.

The charm of FY is the possibility to try different strategies and to hesitate to undertake some. It's a wargame needing to think about strategy, not about what house rules are needed to keep interest

Now, the AI has its weaknesses like not protecting that much its LOS and concentrating too much without screen detachments around. I can't do nothing more than I've yet done about as it's a hard coded behaviour in the exe. At least, in FY the AI sometimes reacts accordingly to the menace...

Certainly because they moved much of their forces against you before their offensive in Ukraine. It's possible too their losses being much less with Siberian wreaking.

BTW, the next FY version will adress the Semyonov/Kolchak rivalry, for the human Siberian player. I will test a bit more before extending the rule to the Siberian AI.

More aggressive Poland towards Ukraine I'd really like to see. In this game I mostly concentrated in wiping out the Ukrainians, ie. securing my left flank, while keeping pressure on Tsaritsyn. In next game, if the Polish threat is real, I could first just partly secure Donbas, and go full scale against Tsaritsyn in 1919...

If the AI allows it, of course.
