I just had a suprise today getting back from work a saw a four engined plane comming over my house. At first i thought it was a lancaster but it didn't look right and i spotted American markings on it, im sure it's not a B17 as i would have recognised that. So the only thing i can think of is that it was a B24 but im a bit suprised there is one flying in th UK. Does anyone know if it could be a b24 or something else?

I know a B-17 crossed the Atlantic a few years ago and did some airshows in Europe. As far as I know, there are only two B-24s flying in the world. The Collins Foundation has a B-24J that travels around the country with a B-17 offering rides, etc. The other belongs to the Commemorative Air Force and is really a C-87 that was converted back into a B-24A a few years ago.

Wikipedia lists 3 airworthy B-24s, all in US. In UK, there are 2 on display, one at Duxford, one at the RAF Museum in Hendon. 2 are under restoration, one in Australia, one in US.

Confederate Air Force B-29 and B-24 seem to be in Texas this August. Someone just has to account for the other 2 B-24's

Only one other. I looked at the Wikipedia article, it says there are only two flying, not three.

The Collins Foundation B-24 is in Ohio: http://www.collingsfoundation.org/cf_schedule-wof.htm

This sounds like a mystery. Maybe it was an 8th AF B-24 lost in time.

It's been a few years now, but I've actually had a chance to check out both of these planes. The B-29 is in excellent shape but the B-24 has seen better days. Even though it was converted back to a B-24A, the belly turret is missing and only a cover of sheet metal covers the turret well. Unless it's been repainted since 2003, it's also got a fairly poor desert tan paint job as well. It was still interesting, especially to compare the basic sizes of two of the three primary heavy bombers of the USAAF, but it didn't wow you like the CAF's B-17G did a few years before that. That beast was a thing of beauty!

The B-24A didn't have a ball turret, it had a tunnel gun.

The Confederate Air Force B-24 is a conversion from the cargo version (C-87). And the Collings Foundation B-24 is only in the US this summer and fall. Doubt they would fly them across the ocean. (Flying the B-17 across was stupid).

Someone should by the B-24J from India, bring it back and restore it to flying condition.

Are you sure you did not see some other 4-engined bomber? How close were you? What was the tail configuration? Or is there a rogue C-87 still in existence?

There are several PB4Y-2s in near airworthy condition and several have been under restoration in recent years. They were used for fire bombers up until about 20 years ago. All the restoration projects are in the US, but one of them may have become airworthy and was sold to someone in the UK recently.

Maybe it's there to dump water on the rioters?

I wouldn't dump water. I would dump fluorescent yellow dye on them so they're permanently tagged for the next 30-60 days. That way anyone can identify them and the cops can pick them up.

There is also a B-24 being restored in Canada. And there is also an Avro Shakleton flying in the UK, which at a quick glance could be mistaken for either a Lancaster ot a B-24.

Thanks all for the replies thought i would have got e-mailed when there were replies to the thread so didn't think there was any. It definetly wasn't a lanc or shackelton as it got close enough for me to be sure it had a single tail not the twin one like a lanc. I luckily used to get to see one that would fly over my house quite a bit.

The markings it had was a star and bar and painted olive green 4 piston engines which is why i asumed it was an american heavy bomber. I tried to get a picture but was far to slow unlocking my work phone.
someone mentioned a four engined transport and its possible although i didn�t know any existed. If it wasn�t for the rioting chavs i wouldn't have seen as i got sent home from work early.

I would say the C-54 is a very good bet. from your picture the general shape is a very good match.

A B-24 has visited the UK but not recently to my knowledge. I can remember one visiting RAF Lyneham some years ago which is quite close to me (Sadly about to close).

The only Douglas aircraft I can find that looks anything like this aircraft and has four engines is this one.

Or this angle...

This particular aircraft used to fly over our house in Brisbane before being grounded for several years due to engine issues. I'm not surprised as one afternoon I was convinced it was coming down in our back yard!!! Fortunately they did some work on it overnight and it sounded much better when it came over the next day. The amount of work keeping these veterans in the air must be horrendous!!
