Enterprise took a single torpedo while heading to Pearl. Light damage and some minor fires. 2 turns later she is burning like a torch and dead in the water. (And 1 hex from PH I might add.) Would me running her at full speed to try to get her home have something to do with this? (Please don't tell me this is all my fault.... ) You'll find that for the first few months, I-boats are nasty little critters. Positioned right they will managed to snipe at your convoys and warships with little chance of being damaged in return. The good news for you is that over time, the USN gets better at sinking the I-boats. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER run a damaged ship at full speed, it will almost guarantee that it will end up sinking. Don't even leave it at Mission Speed, manually set it to cruise. Also, you've heard the saying: "Any port in a storm."? Definately holds true, as getting hit by a torpedo is definately a storm. Try to find a close port with at least a level 3 rating to disband into and let some repairs take place there if you are far from a repair shipyard. You can repair quite a bit of damage just by anchoring in a level 3 port, and every point you can repair is one less chance of something bad happening on the way home. Another trick is to send an AR or ARD to the place you disband the TF into if you have to use the port level 3 method, those ships help speed the repairs, and can do quite a bit of damage repair far from home bases. With smaller ships like Destroyers or patrol boats, an AD or AG will help repairs. Subs can get help from AS ships. I've had ships with minor damage sink at the mouth of the harbor because you get a bad 'roll' on a check (to put in in PnP game terms). The more time you spend at sea with moderate damage, the greater the risk of not making it to the repair yard. In my current vanilla WiTP game, I had Fuso eat 4 torpedoes delivered via swordfish. I put her into the closest level 3 port I could find and ended up saving her (though it took over a year to complete repairs). While AE is far more intricate than vanilla, it still holds true...getting the flooding and fires dealt with in a port is far easier than at sea...any level 3 port will do.
