I noticed the enemy lost 21 Zeros on the ground this turn. I haven't been attacking any enemy airfields. One of my subs knocked off a transport though. Were they possibly the cargo?

I noticed a couple of my SOC Seagulls were shot down while patrolling during turn resolution. I confirmed the losses in the intel screen. My problem is I can't find anything in the ops or combat reports to indicate which units they were from or where they were lost. Where do I find this?

Enterprise took a single torpedo while heading to Pearl. Light damage and some minor fires. 2 turns later she is burning like a torch and dead in the water. (And 1 hex from PH I might add.) Would me running her at full speed to try to get her home have something to do with this? (Please don't tell me this is all my fault.... )

In this order:

- Yes, most probably, congrats because theres also a chance you killed pilots.

- Thats stange, usually you should see a notification in the ops report, but agreed I also have a hard time
to locate such events. I reccommend combat reporter and witpAE tracker, both tools come in very handy in such
situation.

- Good news is, i know why this happened, bad news, yes, because you ran a ship on fire at full speed.
To support damage control always set a damaged ship to cruise speed.

Dont run her at full speed!

Get every war ship you can to merge in the same TF with her, the more the better and only of types that are as fast as she is now or faster. They will help put out the fires. Set her to PH, AUTO DISBAND at port enabled and CRUISE SPEED!

EDIT: also, if you still can and her combined float + sys damage is less than 50, fly out her air groups. Should she sink, you will not lose the aircraft or especially pilots.. I think some of the pilots would be saved but none of the aircraft if she sinks them all aboard.

Its all your fault.

1. Probably deck cargo, it shows like this when a CV is lost.
2. You should have got a message scrolling on the screen showing location, I've always assumed it showed on either OPs or Combat reports
3. Full speed incurs extra damage, I think to systems, might have stopped damage control. You could also have suffered from a freak "critical hit" die roll similar to that which saw the loss of a number of CV.

Sys 83, Flood 88, Eng 53, Fire 40.

Of course, she had to have wildcats instead of buffalos...

Lesson learned. Now it's time for the coverup. I'm throwing CPT Murray under the bus.

I told myself I wouldn't restart no matter how bad I screwed up and I'm going to stick to it.

(Do TF mates really help put out fires? I know they did in real life, but I didn't think that would make it into the game.)

I saw the message scroll, but it went by too quick for me to see where the Seagulls were from or where they were lost. It's definitely not in the OPs or Combat reports.

It should be in the CombatEvents.txt file. That contains lots of those little messages you might miss.

Also, you could select List all Naval Air Units info screen (N key)
Select only FP (Float Planes) and USN, click aircraft model to sort the list, and see which ship(s) are down on SOC1-Seagull numbers.

CombatEvents.txt is a log of all the on screen event messages from the last turn.

You'll find that for the first few months, I-boats are nasty little critters. Positioned right they will managed to snipe at your convoys and warships with little chance of being damaged in return. The good news for you is that over time, the USN gets better at sinking the I-boats.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER run a damaged ship at full speed, it will almost guarantee that it will end up sinking. Don't even leave it at Mission Speed, manually set it to cruise.

Also, you've heard the saying: "Any port in a storm."? Definately holds true, as getting hit by a torpedo is definately a storm. Try to find a close port with at least a level 3 rating to disband into and let some repairs take place there if you are far from a repair shipyard. You can repair quite a bit of damage just by anchoring in a level 3 port, and every point you can repair is one less chance of something bad happening on the way home.

Another trick is to send an AR or ARD to the place you disband the TF into if you have to use the port level 3 method, those ships help speed the repairs, and can do quite a bit of damage repair far from home bases. With smaller ships like Destroyers or patrol boats, an AD or AG will help repairs. Subs can get help from AS ships.

I've had ships with minor damage sink at the mouth of the harbor because you get a bad 'roll' on a check (to put in in PnP game terms). The more time you spend at sea with moderate damage, the greater the risk of not making it to the repair yard.

In my current vanilla WiTP game, I had Fuso eat 4 torpedoes delivered via swordfish. I put her into the closest level 3 port I could find and ended up saving her (though it took over a year to complete repairs). While AE is far more intricate than vanilla, it still holds true...getting the flooding and fires dealt with in a port is far easier than at sea...any level 3 port will do.

Actually, those planes could went down with some earlier damaged Carrier.

Float planes also can take loses, if they can not land on their ship, because it is too damaged to accept planes. Similar to Carriers. I have seen several times, that they diverted to nearby friendly base to land.
