I purchased it about a month after it first came out. I always play it, but just never seemed to finish an entire campaign. (I play solo the full campaign with 1 day turns) I would seem to get to 1943 and then stop playing for a while and then get a new computer, reinstall, and restart a new campaign. I can finally say that I have finished a campaign now.

Well done! What was the best moment? Worst? Most important lesson learned?

Most important lesson learned?

Never buy a new computer in 1943

Starting up that shiny new computer.

Worst?

The realisation that the 1943 savegame is now located at your nearest recycling plant...

Well done donkuchi!

I have my saves backed up to 3 copies on a mirrored disk, then these are copied nightly via scheduled task to my other PC.
Also have a periodic copy on USB drive and laptop.

Been playing a GC since 2009.. dont want to lose all those hours of play!

Thats one of the advantages of playing PBEM.
The most recent save is always in somebodys inbox. No "the dog ate my homework" excuses...

Playing the original WITP would be like having to use an old rotary phone for me. So much has changed. In fact, I would have a hard time playing an unpatched version of AE.

What was the best moment? Sinking 3 Jap Carriers near Tarawa.

Worst? Losing two battleships when I forgot to turn off allowing escorts to bombard and the Oklahoma and Nevada got too close to shore. They sunk heading back to port.

Most important lesson(s) learned?

Turn off allowing escorts to bombard when there are BB's in the task force.

Start moving troops out of the Western US a lot earlier. I wasted two months towards the end of the war moving troops up that I could have done a lot earlier with a lot of idle transports. I had to hold back on some amphib ops during the wait since I didn't have enough troops. (I also lost most of a division attacking Maleolap because I didn't have enough reinforcements close enough to back them up early and my recon was very poor. I had plenty of troops in San Fran at the time that could have been a lot closer)

When you have enough control of the seas, you can use auto convoy so you don't have to micromanage every port as closely as when you need to be careful. That speeds up the game a lot.

Most who never finished likely feel the last few months will be dull and boring. The AI games (especially with AE's AI) saves units till the very end, and should be experienced..

Congrats to the OP.........
