On 25 August, 2011 the South Korean English-language online TV outlet DramaFever will begin making available the 84-part 1994 Chinese TV production of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". It follows the era of upheaval, intrigue, mass battles, romance and general mayhem that attended the fall of the Han Dynasty in the second and third centuries. The fourteenth century novelization upon which the series is based is said to be one the classics of Chinese literature. It is reported that entire divisions of the Peoples' Liberation Army were employed as extras in the prodcution -- presumably with downgrades in weapons and equipment. Thought this might be of interest to members.

I would love to see this in subtitles. English dubbing just doesn't do it for me.

I have never seen anything on DramaFever dubbed. All subtitles. The quality of their subtitles varies.

While you're waiting, I recommend the full-length version of John Woo's "Red Cliff", perhaps the greatest battle of that era. (The long version was not released in American theaters.) I read an English-translated excerpt of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" dealing with the battle, and I found Woo's movie actually a considerable improvement.

I agree 100%...the dubbing turns classic Asian films into cheap Anime.....

Well, the first 23 episodes are up on the site. Subtitled in English. Character- and placenames rendered in Pinyin Chinese. Sound is monoral. This may not be for everyone but I am going to give it a try.
