I have been wondering for years: Why it is impossible to sweep friendly base?
What's the logic behind it? Is it WAD or bug?

It is possible to sweep friendly/controlled hex if enemy LCUs are present there.
So what's the difference between a friendly base sweep and a friendly hex sweep?

I explained to myself, that one cannot use sweepers from the same base (sweep range 0) because the enemy fighters would just smoke them before they reach the altitude... but, again, it's impossible to sweep a friendly base even from ranged bases. Can someone enlighten me?

Isn't sweeping a friendly base at range 0 just CAP? Also from my play, if I place LR CAP over a friendly base, it acts as a sweep mission if opposing fighters are present.

Sweeping a friendly base should be possible. Imagine a situation when you are air-transporting units to some forward base and enemy puts LRCAP on it. As your CAP/LRCAP will not engage his aircraft (defensive vs defensive mission), your only chance is to sweep/escort to that base.

Also do not forget sweeping the heavily CAPed invasion sites.

Although in AE LRCAP vs LRCAP seems bringing an encounter, the fight is rather short and LRCAP isn't too efective.
We're told sweep is more effective than CAP which is more effective than escort so if enemy got the beaches,
it's logical it's better to sweep the base first to achieve air superiority before bombers arrive.

To find that out why it was done, I think the question has to be modified into:
"What negative side effects could the ability to sweep own bases have?"

It for sure was not simply forgotton, but made impossible for a purpose - at least thats my opinion when trying to guess Gary Grisbys thoughts on such things.

One situation I can imagine was amphib assaults with CV LRCAP as cover.
The ability to sweep own bases could create an exploit, to decimate CV fighter squads with sweep vs. CAP bonus (enhanced by the fact its LRCAP),
without the intent of attacking the amphibs.
This could severely unbalance carrier battles and those are one of the pillars the game is built upon.

Maybe there are other reasons too, I am quite sure this decision has been thought through.
I agree its a suboptimal tradeoff but the above example alone is worth pondering on...

Just curious - why would you want to sweep a friendly base?

A Fighter Sweep mission flies to a base, attacks the enemy CAP fighters, and then leaves - yes? I mean - actually being over a friendly base with an entire fighter group at the same time an enemy attack showed up would be the greatest form of luck, wouldn't it?

CAP of a friendly base makes sense - even LRCAP.

Just my 2 cents...

It could be used as a weapon against your own bases being LRCAPed.

Is there any workaround for this situation? (to wear down fighters of heavily CAPed invasion site)

Only solution in my mind is to LRCAP invasion site and send some expandable bombers on ground/naval attack to initiate fight.

I don't think this would work- the USN has a few dirigibles but they don't have the range to be effective.

This is a three-year-old zombie thread that doesn't belong in Tech, guys.
