Status: offline 		PzB for me it still seems strange why Andis 4E Air attacks are so much stronger than in my game. I have massive problems to damage enemy troops in rough terrain (mountains, dense jungle) or in cities with more than 6 forts. The only real difference is that in our game 4E are restricted to 15k altitude minimum.

An result with around 250 4E @ 15k feet resulted in (no B-29 in that attack)

Japanese ground losses:
24 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

losses in Lashio with lvl 7 Forts. Even constant air attacks of 20 or 30 turns with 250+ 4E resulting in almost no killed ground troops and disruption < 15 for the enemy. The only difference i can see are the 15k feet. Possible you could negotiate such a rule if 4E are really that big problem. The allied offensive works without nuking ground troops by 4E too, so just little more challnge for Andy. 2E and FB can be killed by flak at a good rate, and even with 15k supply and airfields can be killed quite good.

Status: offline 		I think PaxMondo and Fishbed are right.  Don't think there is any way to hold, but at least you make your ground expensive to Andy and sell it slowly.  The only thing I don't like about this is that we will sooner or later close to 4E range on Singapore and other major ports (even Palembang will hurt).  I wouldn't discount Andy's naval arm though: Likely his CV are still not on par with your strength yet, but he must have enough repaired and new replacement decks by now to stage a nice ambush in return if you are not cautious.

If you want to force Andy to deploy significant LCU and LBA in reaction to an operation against his communications, hmmh, I wonder whether there is any target left for such an exploit?  Do you have any recent recon from Ceylon?  OZ must be buzzing with troops anyway, and any trouble there would probably not require him to send reinforcements from India.  But at least it could disrupt any move from OZ to DEI, if he so plans.  Same if you'd target any of the islands in SO or CENTPAC, in case he is preparing something there.  However, both options would face LBA, if not even his CV, and could turn out costly...

Status: offline 		Yes, you're right Pax; Burma has to do with what it got.

Not sure there is a low cost - low risk operation that can be conducted in 1944...
Sending an invasion force anywere would mean:
a) Stripping a major garrison of troops
b) Changing unit prep target (will take 90 days)
- An invasion with ill prepared troops = cripling losses
c) The KB needs to support an amph invasion
- This will bring us within LBA range and attrit our CAG and Navy

The best offensive in 1944 is counterattack when Allies attack!
Then we need to be ready with 4-5 divisions and our entire air and naval fleets!

We have an "arrangement" that 4Es is not to be used "overly" against ground targets.
Andy use some before ground attacks...it's mostly medium bombers that cause havoc on our
troops in clear hexes and units in strat or move mode.

Troops in Bassein are protected by 4 fort levels and yet ground attacks cause the same amount of losses
as against units in a clear hex without forts. This is not right and should be tweaked me thinks.

Recon indicates that most Allied bases now holds 10-20-30 units; very hard to tell what kind of units this is Jahn.

This turn our troops north of Toungoo were forced to retreat. I honestly don't understand how odds are calculated - or ground combat in general.
In a jungle hex with relatively fresh troops our AV was reduced from 500 to 250; usually it's doubled or more

Our Army bombers hit Prome and Allied ground troops with some effect today but even when bombing from 11k feet casualties were high and ca 35 bombers
were lost to AA. When Allies bomb from 7000 feet and we have 4 AA Regiments we manage to damage 2-3 ac....

The good news is that our troops will march out of clear hex hell of Prome next turn.
Now we should be able to gather 1500 AV in the 2 threatened hexes as indicated on the attached screen.
The question is whether this is enough; only time will show. I will siphon troops from the north to reinforce the flanks and create reserves.

I'm tempted to send the Victoria Point division to Moulmein just as a precaution.
Should be able to find a reinforcement for VP in due time.

Status: offline 		Ok we got lucky this turn. I'm going away on teambuilding tomorrow, so will complete and return this turn on Thursday.
We need to make some very very important decisions, so please come with your best advice ever!

I set 200 Jap fighters on LRCAP over Bassein to get the Allied ground pounders last turn.
Somehow they only intercepted ac attacking Rangoon this turn

In the last part of the turn enemy para and air landing troops started landing at Bassein - THEN our fighters intercepted but made few kills (opposed to what Allied fighters on CAP did with our transports).
After taking an unreasonable punishment the Bassein garrison was severly weakened but we were lucky and the 3-1 odds wasn't enough to capture the place.

Next turn I will drop Jap paras and conduct heavy air strikes on Allied troops in Bassein.

In Prome our army marched out promptly hours before a massive Allied assault by 3500 AV set in.
So we got away in the nick of time this turn!

If you look at the situation map (included road and rails so a bit messy) our forces have been dispersed.
In total we have some 1400 + 1400 + 1000 + some dispersed and worn down LCU units between Taung Gyi and Rangoon.
Any of these stacks are hardly adequate to face the full force of Allied air power and a 4500 AV assault for long.

Our current position will delay Andy but we can't allow him to route our troops.

The question is therefore; should we stand and fight or should we fall back.
- If we are to fall back, were should we fall back to?

Handing over Rangoon and all of Burma to Andy isn't very tempting but it's better than getting our army routed.
Our only tenable defensive line is the Moulmein - Rahaeng line. Here we could mass 3000 AV in Moulmein and 2000 on the flanks as well as strongly garrison the coast to the south.
Andy would then have to deal with Port Blair and the Andamans to open up for further advances.

I'm more or less in favor for a slow withdrawal of the Burma Army to Moulmein.
What do you say?

Status: offline 		Question: Are the two enemy concentrations you mention (3500 and 1500 AV respectively) his only concentrations or does he have additional significant ground forces in theater? I suspect you'll have to withdraw either way, but if he has 5000 AV total there's a chance if you can pull your disparate forces together.

Status: offline 		A line going from the hex NE of Moulmain to Chiang Mai is a very nice defensive position. It can (and will) eventually be flanked but that costs a lot of time and there are many lovely JR hexes to make a stand in if the flankers aren't strong enough. There is no need to fall back on Rahaeng immediately.

Mynok's assessment may be harsh but I agree. Get out whatever you can and be thankful that you can rebuild destroyed LCUs in the betas.

Status: offline 		A slow fall back to the Moulmein-Rahaeng-Giang Mai line is probably due.  I am sure you already have thought of anchoring the left flank of this line proper on the coast (I'd jump from Rangoon to Tavoy, if I were Andy, and grind my way into Bangkok).  Hopefully you can march some units north of Taung Gyi back to your lines -- if not, perhaps they will bind more of his men than of yours.

The only thing I quite dislike about this withdrawal (besides a fighting withdrawal being an inherent risky thing) is the loss of the air bases and the end of cutting down his fighters.  Besides the nuking bombing raids on your airfields, the one to suffer most in the air was Andy. He apparently (FOW) has lost a good number of Corsairs, Mustangs, Thuds and commonwealth types, not to mention the number of 2E and 4E machines downed (it would be interesting to compare his total losses to the historical pools now...).  Your losses in modern Frank and Georges seem to be almost acceptable in contrast, especially since almost half of your losses are planes bombed to dust, and since you saved a lot of pilots fighting over own turf.  Not sure whether these losses should leave a significant dent in Andy's air capacities for later bombing campaigns, though? But at least point-wise it seems worth continuing.

I thought some more about the economy-of-force distraction for Andy.  Indeed it will take prepping time, but why actually ever completely execute it?  Binding some of Andy's unit is just enough.  Even better: a ruse might induce Andy, in his previous habit, to prematurely launch an operation of his own. 
Say for example you prep 3-5 div worth of good units for a strategically reachable, valuable target on his communications.  Something that he will need to take care of before advancing, that does threaten his convoy lines, or staging areas.  Nothing that can be "bypassed and dealt with later" (which probably he would do in case of Ceylon).  How about Diego Garcia?  Or perhaps something in South Pacific, west of OZ?  Prep some units, hope it is being detected and organize recon flights, or even send a carrier raid to gather intel into the general area (as if by coincidence).  After 6-8 weeks, start loading the troops up and hope that will be detected as well.  Maybe move an empty convoy with some AP to the general area later, to enforce the impression, perhaps with a covering force consisting of some battlewagons -- just needs to be detected, and seem as if KB was hiding nearby.  By that time I would have KB loitering somewhere between Rabaul and Christmas island, and see how Andy reacts...

First i would try to hold 1st (yellow) def. line as long as possible (while units from northern Burma escape to saftetly (pink arrow)

once when 1st line is become impossible to hold (or your units there become in jeopardy of being routed or encircled) just move to 2nd line (orange)... and after that to 3, 4th and finally 5th defensive line (Bangkok). Then he will not have other choice than go for Singapore. But by that time you will buy a several months imho.

During this campaign dont forget to set PPs for your next def. line. Remember, Andy will not know where you will make a stand and his Army cant be prepared for every base :)

Ofc, securing flank (indian ocean) is must there! Although KB is intact and Andy doesnt have a lot of CVs Allies can conduct amphibious invasion at your flank (i was in very similar situation in my game against Andy... )

I wish that you could read this in my AAR but due to reckless actions of Joe Wilkerson this AAR dissapeared

Hm, 3 months left of the monsoon - that's actually quite a long time!

There is one problem with a "fighting retreat";
If we stand and wait for a superior enemy army it will take 5 days to march out of the hex.
5 days is enough for a superior force to route us if we're unlucky and then it will become very difficult to stand fast again.

Andy got more troops, I estimate a total of ~8000 AV. 1000 of these will probably be locked as garrisons and on the flanks / to the north.
So say 7000 AV to attack with divided into 3 major stack that soon will merge to 2 (5000 / 2000 roughly). I expect the 5000 stack to form shortly
and pursue SSE of Prome towards Rangoon while the other stack moves slowly south towards Toungoo.

I've attached a new map that illustrates our challenge more clearly.
Most of the terrain south of the basin is "JG" = plain jungle. This doesn't provide anywere near as good defensive ground as "JR" - Jungle / Rough does.
So any stand north of Moulmein and outside of our fortified bases in jungle hexes will be very hard to defend.

The best possible defensive line is probably a 3000 AV stack in the hex north of Moulmein with reserves in Moulmein together with regiments beyond the river.
A garrison is enough at Ghiang Mai with a "plug" in the rought jungle hex below the river to the NE. There is a railway leading up to Ghiang so this base can easily be reinforced.

As we controll the hex borders in the north and since there is a road leading SSE we should be able to march a division worth of troops south for this purpose.
Taung Gyi (JR) will be well garrisoned and fortified and hold the flank until the northern holding force has withdrawn.

So there is our plan for the next defensive line that should be able to hold until into 1945.
In the meanwhile I will do all I can do delay the enemy advance towards Rangoon. If Andy pursued us into Rangoon with his "major stack" I would be tempted to make a stand there.

A feint is of course possible, I'm planning a major diversion soon - should be possible to combine

Combined Fleet has repaired many major vessels and more have performed lengthy upgrades. Within a few weeks both Yamato's, all our carriers, a new light cruiser, 2 new light carriers
and numerous destroyers should report ready for action. I will then gather the full might of the fleet; we need a heavy hand for the battles that awaits us!

in that case, your plan is, im pretty sure, best option. The only thing i would avoid is "Stalingrad" at Rangoon. I would never fight for R. or try to delay enemy advance - too easy to get encircled.

Ordered a dozen fighter units to escort our bombers at 30k feet in order to encourage "sweeps". Only 1 units went in....
- The inability to sweep friendly bases is a big BS!

Still, the reinforcement and suppression of enemy forces in Bassein made sure that the place remains in our hands.

Obviously a strong line at Moulmein will encourage an amph landing at Tavoy and further down the coast after Port Blair has been suppressed.
The Combined Fleet together with our LBA assets from Bangkok, Victoria Point and Medan area will have to do their part to secure this weakness, but we must indeed make sure
that we have enough troops in these bases as well.

Andy said that supplies has been his big issue; it's hard to believe so - I got troops on the 2 only roads leading into the basin.
He says he's using 500 supply planes to bring in 1500 supplies each day and that Ramree Island is the new supply hub.
- Ramree Island is...a small island with a small port and no road Still this is enough to supply 20~division worth of troops.

I'm really confused about how supplies are distributed in AE and don't think my efforts have much effect anymore.
Obviously the blocking division north of Prome was a big hassle for Andy but I would never have believed that.

Except from that, plenty of other hassles; tried to rail a worn down division out of Toungoo - was just on its way this turn when 4-5 units entered the hex.
4 of them immediately retreated again as they were much to weak to face our troops there. Our division still cancelled its movement and now has to walk to Moulmein

PzB, in one of your older posts I suggested testing the sweep, as in my game (beta p8) it works ok.
now I see whre's the devil...
You're right. It is impossible to sweep friendly base, even if there ara enemy LCUs.
But I can assure you, you can sweep friendly hex with enemy units in it.
That's kind of weird... (what's the difference between sweeping a hex and sweeping a base?) and maybe it's a bug & worth making a new thread on a tech forum?

I've hatched a cunning plan for how to complete the Geisha line and defend the flanks.
Troops have been identified and preparations have started.

In general I have to make some sacrifices but I think the worst is over for now; we got some time
and just have to move our pawns in the right direction.

The lack of east-west roads in Burma is a major pain, but that can work both ways...!

I was suspecting that. He probably uses Landing Barges, and he can use them over whole coast, no need for port. It is possible to dump supply directly onto LCU, and it will distribute extra to nearby units.

Find a fresh Division in Java/Borneo/Philippines, get it to Burma front, in exchange - get rebuilding Division from Singapore on its old place. When another of your Divisions get routed, just transport it to Singapore, and repeat operation. Also, the most supply is used by land combat. Make sure you are fighting with Allied units all the time. They are on constant offensive, and they should have no time for rest. Every disabled squad is now disabled for good, because LCUs had no time for rest. Do not give them this time, and they will be too weak to take Rangoon.
It will be nice, if you will counterattack once they will spent themselves. You should be able to rotate most of your spent units, Allies would have to load them on transports, and get them back to India.

Barges, plus aerial support. Whatever supplies he gain by roads alone is certainly not enough for him to sustain his entire army. So he has to rotate troops, mass on your weak points for one strike and avoid attrition battles at all costs.
By allowing him to defeat you in detail you have played in his hand. You defended over a far too large area with several battle groups unable to quickly support each other. Had you concentrated and been fighting a war of attrition he would have been in deep trouble.

He may still be in troubles if you switch to this tactic, but question is can you do it now with so many of your units badly mauled especially your armored divisions.

In any case if he gains Rangoon his supply problem will certainly be solved. But for how long can you hold it now.

Btw where is the Thai army, all in all you can use around 1000AV of them at the front; canon fodder yes, but this is exactly how he is using chinese units as well.

- If enemy is using LRCAP the fighers will be set with range of 1-x hexes.

I've seen that when LRCAP'ing Bassein my fighters "reacted" to enemy attacks on nearby bases.
So this turn I swept Prome heavily; when bombers went in there were no CAP fighters there

We wiped out the entire air landing force today, good riddance. Hopefully it will take 3-4 months to rebuild it.

Have discussed the sweep functionality and it's just not possible to get the air guys to see the light

I can indeed rotate routed divisions, problem is that it takes a loong time to do so.
I can't move troop transports into Rangoon without air superiority and it takes more than a month to get a division out
via Moulmein. Wish the Burma railroad could be completed...

Road and rail network in Burma goes north south, very little east west.
Switching forces quickly is very difficult (especially because of my second favorite functionality that makes rail movement
impossible even if a single enemy squad is present in your base).

With Andy attacking in prongs; one westwards, 2 south and one SW towards Prome I was not able to swich troops quickly enough.
My blocking forces in the jungle (1.5 div worth of troops) were routed much easier than I believed possible. Gathering all the eggs
in one basket is a smart idea as long as you don't place them in the wrong basket.

Burma

I'm contemplating a relatively bold option; because of the north south road / rail network in Burma it's very difficult and time consuming
to move east - west.

My plan is therefore to concentrate the bulk of the Burma Army near Rangoon in 2 major formations.
1. Either in the hex north of Burma or - ideally - in Rangoon itself.
- If we do so Andy will most likely be forced to attack westwards and it takes forever to move a single hex without roads.
An east - west movement will make it possible to use our 2500-3000 AV Rangoon stack in a counterattack northwards.

2. Either in Toungoo or in the jungle hex to the south. With 1200-1500 AV we should easily be able to stall the enemy army in this area.

If any of our armies are routed we have to fall back to the Geisha line.

In any case this will take time and enable us to bring in fresh troops. Good progress is already being made to the north and I expect the major
LCU formations to be able to move south. Since Taung Gyi is a rough jungle hex with 4 forts a couple of regiments will be able to defend the base
against the relatively weak formations Andy has here.

The advantages of this plan is that it; a) buys us time b) gives us a chance to hang on to Rangoon.
The risk is that we may be defeated and become to weak to efficiently hold the Geisha Line.
- I can counter this risk by bringing in reserves to the Bangkok area.

The only alternative to this plan is to withdraw to the Geisha Line immediately and hand Rangoon over to Andy...
What does the War Council think about all this?

Status: offline 		Well, thanx - it was a daring Pacific attempt ala Market Garden by Andy and he only lacked 1-2 AV to capture Bassein!
It was a good thing to wipe out the airborne elements.

During the last couple of turns several scout planes were destroyed in the Coral Sea, a mixed surface combat group was observed.
Admiral Sakashito in Rabaul cursed and the alarm was sounded.

The fast reaction force, 2 heavy cruisers and destroyers steamed towards Milne Bay while the fighter units in the region were
assembled between Milne Bay and Lae. The attack planes were told to wait and prepare for night action.

An MTP squadron was ordered to patrol Port Moresby region and a unit of midget subs sortied from Milne Bay.

This morning an MTB made first contact!
An invasion force was heading into Port Moresby, ALAARM

Status: offline 		The fast reaction force is a highly skilled and aggressive unit but it had to fight heavy odds today!
4 enemy destroyers were overcome.
Next an old battleship, the Revenge and 4 destroyers were encountered.

This battle became bloody, the revenge took 5 torpedoes, 2 were dud.
Loads of 8" shells hit but the Revenge got its...revenge and landed 1 15" shell on the waterline of both our heavy cruisers.
This caused a lot of damage. Both sides destroyers took some hits.

We also dispatched some long range MTBs to Ramree Island to attempt a night surprise attack at a convoy there.

The enemy invasion force started to unload troops in the morning and Frances torpedo bombers attacked before dawn.
Unfortunately no hits were scored.

During the early morning further skirmishes took place between our reaction force, MTBs and enemy destroyers.
Our ships were now low on ammo.

That actually happened this turn (despite our fighter concentration there).

I've placed our fighters in the nearby bases while the naval bombers "live" near Wewak in Central New Guinea.
Want to keep them away from enemy hurt - and I've moved much air support north.

South New Guinea and the Solomons isn't really of key importance anymore, a secondary theatre as we're almost in March 44.
I will fight a delaying action in this area for as long as possible, our MLR is now at SRA, PIs and Marianas. Cent Pac and Marshalls are holding lines together with Solomons - Southern NG.

In Burma enemy armored units are trying to rush to Bassein over the clear hex south of Prome. So we continue to sweep Prome and attack the armor with our bombers.
Obviously I need some reinforcements to hold Bassein.

South of Prome the Allied main force launched an attack on our army moving south towards Rangoon.
The attack was repulsed with heavies losses to enemy. Next turn we move to the hex north of Rangoon; I need to reorganize our troops and it's looks like we have a chance at stabilizing the front now.
- Andy sending troops down the flank is a good thing, if I can get a couple more divs to the Rangoon Army Andy will be stalled.

In Port Moresby enemy air units attacked the base and troops with little effect.
Unfortunately our fast reaction force spent most its prep points in the combat during the night and was still near PM during the day phase.
A tiny flight of 12 Helldivers attacked and scored 4 1000 bomb hits which caused a heavy cruiser to sink - the other is not in good shape either.

Our CAP at Buna provided support but so did the enemy CVE's now in Port Moresby harbour.

Status: offline 		This is the situation in Burma; main enemy force is still not concentrated south of Prome - guess Andy wanted to try and hit us
before we could concentrate. If we get into Rangoon we can hold the enemy main force with a smaller defensive force and block the enemy near and at Toungoo to prevent a flanking move.
As long as these terms are true the front should be stable.

Wonder if we managed to disturb the enemy landings!?
Next turn we release our fighters and ready 100 naval bombers for action.

Status: offline 		The PM campaign was a short one; 1500 enemy AV unloaded in little more than a day.
Today we "almost" managed a good counterstrike; most of our fighters showed up as escort but only 4 Jills showed up for the party.
The 100 naval bombers all got lost enroute to target. 13 Frances appeared (alone) on the PM phase and were killed by the resurgent CAP.

To add insult to injury; the damaged Myoko suddenly decided to sink - water just pured into her hull and she foundered near Milne Bay.
With 63 flood damage I had hoped she would make it.

In 1944 Allied advantages really become evident.
I will pull our air units in the Solomons / New Guinea back to Rabaul and fight a defensive campaign without throwing more nuts into the fire.

Situation in Burma is more or less stabilized; strong reinforcements have been sent to the coastal hexes south of Moulmein.
With the troop concentrations we have in the area things should be under controll.

I will now step up the buildup of the Marianas, SRA and PI regions.
The Combined Fleet will move to their new main anchorage and sit like a spider in the middle of its web to wait for pray!

Air Combat

Notice the extreme casualties caused on our decimated regiment in Bassein.
The enemy ground attack ac are uber efficient.

Same with enemy 4Es, over 800 hits by ~150 bombers and they easily fly through all our best fighters.

The unfortunate thing is that we need to defend Bassein for a week; this means committing a brigade to the
carnage there. Our left flank division has started crossing the river into Bassein at a rate of 7 miles a day.
6 more days remains...so we have to keep bombarding enemy troops moving into Bassein and prevent them from
making much progress.

Status: offline 		I've been reviewing the next turn and here is a summary of some of the main events;

In Burma we succeeded in hitting enemy shipping at Ramree Island with our Frances bombers.
2 transports and 2 LSTs were reported hit and sunk (or sinking).

As 2 enemy LCUs moved into Bassein and shock attacked accross the river our reinforcement brigade from Rangoon elegantly moved into position and
blocked their assault. Enemy ground attack ac will most likely tear this unit apart but we will not leave the enemy units alone either. Our division crossing the river from the left
flank is now ~30 miles away. When this group has moved to Rangoon the door into Bassein can be closed.

Near Port Moresby an MTB claimed a kill by torpedoing a transport. Our air force stayed home; I notice that it could have been possible to hit enemy shipping with LBA but
the awful coordination of long range bomber and local fighters make this a very expensive prospect.

Andy was quite please with that we didn't spot his preparations for invading PM until a couple of days before the invasion.
That's true and he prepared and executed well using only moderately strong surface forces to support his invasion.

- The strip of ocean between the massive Allied air bases in and around Cairns make it difficult to fly efficient search missions and while I've been flying recon missions
over all the major bases for a year nothing out of the ordinary was spotted. The only way of hanging on to Port Moresby would have been to issue 2 or more full size divisions to the place and I wasn't willing to do so. We keep our reserves; ~1.5 divisions worth of troops, in Rabaul and I now distribute packets of troops to the smaller bases in New Guinea that have forts and engineers but no garrison.

I expect Rabaul to become increasingly isolated during the reminder of 1944 and by 1945 the frontline should be Truk, Northern New Guinea, Marianas and PIs.
