I could be wrong but it looks like PZB is abandoning the red circled hex above....

If he is this is a real corker of an error as I will punch 6 Divs straight acrross to the open hex above Pegu pocketing a large amount of the Burma garrison

XV Corps will pursue to Rangoon, 3rd Div will take basseein and IV Corps will close the Pegu road

Game over for the Rangoon garrison and also for anthign left up at Toungoo....

He cannot be doing that can he ??

With my heavies pounding Rangoon anything left in that base is a dead dodo I dont need to attack it until all the supplies are gone

Rangoon is toast no matter what happens on balance I think its indefendable because any garrison will be out of supply quickly

Prome is now fully operational and all of Corps have sizable AA along so air attack not really the same threat to my Corps as it is to his.

Yes isolated units can get picked off but a solid force of 5 or 6 Divs of CW Divs all with attached AA units and each Corps with an attached AA BRIGADE make Ground attacking allied forces in 44 qa losing proposition so I dont fear the open the same way PZB needs to

His LBA are trained for anti shipping - mine are trained for air to mud ....

The more I think about it and plan my next steps a attack into NG doesnt hurt me but its not the endgame New Britainb and Line Islands are a good platform for my 45 offensive but I would really like to get back into the DEI somehow in 44

The fleet is still rebuilding on the West Coast my next move is to bring it back to Pearl Harbour

I would like to attack in CENTPAC in mid 44 again not intended to be decisive but I want PZB looking in multiple directions

LBA putting pressure on in Burma and NG and Carrier Air in CENTPAC

And then decisively switch all effort to the main real attack scheduled (tentatively) for about November 44

Why? Surely that is what he is expecting and preparing for? Why attack where he is expecting you to strike?

Why is NEI crucial to Japan? - Oil and fuel. But that oil and fuel must reach the Japanese industry for it to matter. Why not bypass all of the lower NEI and instead go up the northern NG coast and on to Mindanao? From there you can close the SLOCs between NEI and Japan. I dont think he is fortifying his positions that far north yet... By using the various forces you have at your disposal in the pacific, you can prep for several targets up the NG coast at the same time, and easily leapfrog north.

You dont even need to capture Rabaul, just neutralize it and bypass it. Make him waste his LCUs instead of attacking right into them.

Oh thats the plan I am just saying I want to be in that area in 44

Rabaul is a good port and ports are vital so I will be looking at it for that reason

There are other choices but getting a good front line port is high on my list of objectives

Today I ordered 2 major operations in Burma

1. an all out strike against Moulmien by my heavies accompanied bty sweeps - PZB has been using it as a fighter base but constant opposed sweeps and LRCAP will have fatigued them so I should hit a nice haul and closing that airbase will push him back further
2. tacticals hitting Bassein heavily

In other news more troops are pouring into PM albeit its taking a while to repair - follow up troops are en route so PM should be open and working in a few days

I lost 10 CV's to his 2CV
1 CVL to his 2
8 CVE's
20 BB's to his 4.

As I said painfull predominantly from PH and 2 Carrier Battles where he got me at 8 hex range and I couldnt retaliate and a cripple convoy that his sig int led him straight to

Of those the DEI battle cost me 9 BB's, 6 CV's and 8 CVE's

Most of them in the 8 hex range battle where if you remember my Hellcat CAP was totally ineffective

Kavieng and Manus can be easily built up to decent ports.... - I also totally bypassed Rabaul, and 28 Japanese units are stuck there now without hope of escape - and it's a great training area for my new bomber squads as well....
and from Kavieng Truk can be neutralized too.....

Just spent a good long time looking at pilot quality in especially the RAF and IAF Sqns in Northern Burma and its deteriorating fast

The Sqns havent been decimated or had a hard attritional fight but operational losses and low density pools of air frames are starting to tell

I am going to have to pull back some sqns to retrain and take on replacement pilots sending some of my vets for a rest off line.

The Fighter Wing at Prome with SpitVII's and Vc's (5 Sqns) probably needs to remain operational

The Fighter Bomber Wing (6 Sqns) probably needs to be withdrawn to retrain maybe transferrign a couple of Sqns to a new Composite CAS Wing

The CAS Wing of Vengeance DB's and Blenheim VD's (6 Sqns - 3 of each) again the Blenheims will probably pull back to rebuild and the Vengeance DB's will join the FB's in a composite Wing

The Strategic Wing (6 Sqns - 3 Wellingtons/ 3 Liberators) will remain but operate less frequently

Everything else will be pulled back to Madras/Bombay/Colombo/Calcutta for re training re organisation - I dont think I have a choice I am burning frames and pilots at an alarming rate

Even keeping 12 Sqns supporting the Army and 6 on Strategic bombing may not be sustainable.

12 weeks of constant hard fought air battles are attriting the RAF pretty bad

The USAAF/USMC and USN Sqns tranferred in will need to take up the slack

Pretty happy with todays turn for some reason my fighters swept Pegu not Moulmien

VBut the heavies still got through and torched the AF

A day late but cest la viwe

Cost me about 20 heavies but a small price to pay and being brutal I can now afford the losses.

PZB then hit PM from the air but the AF was open and 5th AF was waiting for them

A full NZ AA Bde is also present so even had the bombers got through I was reasonably happy

Battle of Toungoo begins he only has 1 reinforced Div here so wont take more than a few days to break through

50 jap Squads disabled today so I estimate 3 - 4 deliberate attacks and I will be into the forts all I need is to keep PZB with troops up here as this is a sideshow

The real push is the IV Corps attack towards Pegu to isolate Rangoon.
XV Corps is driving south and IV Corps is moving towards Pegu

Not sure what PZB is up to abandoning the critical lynchpin defensive hex has me confused he has left Rangoon ripe for isolation after which point its game over for the garrison as my Heavies will make short work of their supply no matter how big the stack

ps Supply update - actually looking pretty good now I pulled most of the AF out of central Burma and by using all my supply planes to Prome my suppply is in the white and looking it can stay there

Prome has about 20k supply in the dump and PZB cannot effectively bomb it as I have plenty of AA guns

PzB is just not looking at ground combat straight. He probably thinks the 1:2 results at Toungoo are ok, that he is holding you, when the losses are mounting with you winning as your AV looses are proportionally less anyway.

With no support units in the area, his non combat squad losses are going to hurt more and more.

The tipping point there can't be far away and then he will have another 2 trashed divisions in Burma. Wasteful stuff that will only slow you slightly.

Yup but given IV Corps is moving behind them the only question is do I want to drive them out early I have a chance to either pocket them or at least keep them away from the Moulmien/Tavoy battles

IV Corps is moving fast no more than 5 days and I will be across his LOC Driving on Pegu.

No idea why PZB gave me that hex he isnt ruinning for Moumlien so its a bit weird

This should illustrate why I am confused.

By ceding the hex att he start of the Yellow line PZB has given me a route to two hexes that he MUST fight for or be circled

And the two hese he must fight for ---- guess what open terrain my mediums and FB's will rip him apart in that terrain.

I expected a full evac when he conceded the key hex but if he tries to stand at Rangoon we could have a huge and nasty pocket......

What am I missing ?? XXXIII Corps is presurring from the North, XV Corps to hold the ring around Rangoon and IV Corps to close the pocket...

It does not compute.....

Been looking at next steps

Pacific Fleet is now in the process of redeploying to PH - still about 45 days before it will be ready for the next operation

My next attack is likely to be a full court attack on the Line Islands - I could bypass them but the AF PZB has built at Christmas Island is a perfect base for me.

I am basically going to use B29's in the Pacific to support the island hopping campaign they will be used to supress LBA

PH based 29's will knock out the Line Island airbases and once knocked out this will allow me to keep my entire CAG on Anti Shipping for when KB comes calling.

B29's will then move to Christmas Island and support the island hopping campaing throught the end of 1944.

IF I can get to the stage where I have the Marshalls and Gilberts under control by late 44/early 45 its game on

SWPAC will keep pressure on in NG purely to attrit his AF and keep PZB occupied.

CENTPAC will attack through the Line Islands/Gilberts/Marshalls.

SEAC will secure Rangoon and try to move south.

BUT all of these moves in 44 are basically about contracting the Japanse perimeter, attriting his forces and pushing him back

In early 45 (if KB is intact) or late 44 (if PZB makes a mistake and loses a Carrier Battle) I will attack into Borneo and Southern Phillipines this si the main attack.

In order to make it work I need to shorten the LOC to SWPAC to ensure enough Fuel gets through, I also need to keep pushing the Japanese back.

My mistakes in 43 have basically ensured this game goes to the wire in 46 I am determined not to lose it !!!
