Feel fine. It's just a regular check-up, liver panel, cholesterol and such.

I'm just sleepy because I took a long time to fall asleep last night, and couldn't have breakfast before being needled. Think I'll take a little nap...

Heh ... just saw that they were going to do a revamp on one of my all time favourite games - Syndicate (early 90s)

Was happy for approximately 30 secs until I saw that they were going to change it from Strategy to (yet another) First Person Shooter

Hi all,

Today is also a day of celebration amidst the solemnity. It's the full-throated primal scream that commences the NFL season. So I find myself somewhat torn between following the remembrance services and channel surfing the NFL.

IIRC the USA College Football season also started recently.

Can you please (some of you USA fans) please explain to us Europeans how is this organized?

I searched the WikiPedia and found the NCAA (and Football Bowl Subdivision) - but I still don't understand why are there so many regional divisions?

Are they connected in any way or totally separate?

Therefore is there a tournament that encompass all 1st place holders in those regional divisions so that best national (i.e. USA) team is decided?

Awesome news. We need more FPS games. Especially half-arsed ones that cash in on the name of succesful earlier games.

I think they should make a Stratego FPS. Or a Monopoly FPS.

Those are both trademarked, BTW!

Ah, college football......it's easier to watch than explain.

First you have multiple "divisions" which you should kind of understand like premier and lower level leagues. At the top is Division I which is the big schools and pretty much all you see much on television. There is no playoff at this level, just the infamous Bowl Champsionship Series. Only some conferences have a reserved spot in the BCS for their champion team. These are the so-called "BCS" conferences. There are other DivI conferences that do not have a reserved slot and can only get at-large slots.

The second division is slightly smaller schools and does have a playoff. Indeed there is a playoff at all the lower level divisions (of which there are three).

Within each division there are conferences. These originally were regional groupings of teams who mutually agreed to play each other every year. At the top level now, it's more about television money than regionality. Schools usually have contracts with the conferences but these can be broken usually at the cost of some coin.

Right now there is a big shakeup looming as Texas A&M is trying to leave their conference and join the Southeastern Conference (which is the top football conference). This would pretty much destroy their old conference (Big 12....which already lost two teams last year and is only 10 schools). There's lots of wrangling going on behind the scenes with some of the other conferences sniffing around and preparing to snatch some schools if it does collapse. Many predict that at the top level, it will eventually shake out into 4 huge super-conferences with 16 teams each. Things do kind of look headed that way.

Hi Leo:

As a casual NCAA College Football fan, I can take a swing at this. Within Div I, groups of teams (usually regional-ish) are broken down into smaller more manageable conferences with 8-12 or so teams in them. Otherwise you've have hundreds of Div I teams in one bracket. That would be as unmanageable as the current playoff status.

Schedules-what teams play whom when-are mostly within one's own conference, but approximately half of the games played are outside of one's own conference. Usually, when playing outside of one's own conference, other Div I teams are played. Sometimes a Div II opponent will be played.

Div I schools with poor football teams are paid significant sums of money ($300,000-$2 Million+) by other Div I teams with football prowess to get sacrificed to pump up the other team's winning record. Sometimes they cooperate and lose big. Other times, the underdogs will trip up the host Div I team-those times are a hoot!

That would be the plotline akin to that from "Serious Sam" a few years back.

Complicated as hell...

Good morning. Glad my Chiefs showed up to play yesterday....

How's the wheat looking down there, Kansas boy?

Meh...hasn't even come up yet... some guys have planted, most haven't. I don't think dad and gramps have planted theirs... they plant later than some...(better if you ask me).... The wheat this year was poor at best in terms of yield...however, a stressful growing season means higher protein in the wheat... thus higher premiums for those who have the wheat...(the farmer sees zero premium, I am talking end user, which is my line of work) Not sure what this upcoming wheat crop will look like... very little moisture in the soil....who knows... wheat is rather drought tolerant though... we had ZIP for rain and still grew 45 bu wheat when we avg 65-75 on our farms....and 8$ a bushel doesn't hurt either haha.

I'll be coming through your neck of the woods next Mayish...7 week fishing trip to Canada again...No kids, no wife, pure heaven....

BTW I'd take that fine gentleman up on his offer, and give him all of your info he has requested. Looks legit..
