I need a new monitor for my gaming desktop. What are people buying these days in the way of monitors?

Color, Bruce. I'd definitely go with a color one. And a switch thingee too. To turn it on and off. Some people get better results with a cord of some sort which connects to the box that goes 'bing'.

I'm no technophile, so I apologize if this is pretty basic.

I still use my good old 1600x1200 (and all resolutions below) 19" 30kg (about 65 pounds) 19" Mitsubishi monster...

I can't get used to LCD monitors... the good ones cost several thousands of US $ and all the cheap ones are so bad that I can describe how...

Yeah, well I am not buying a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). I would have to use Ebay and that is not happening and I don't want one anyway. I would love Apple's 32 inch monitor (2000 dollars plus). That is also not happening. I need something in the middle........

Speaking from first hand experience, I would suggest you get the biggest screen you can:
a) afford
b) fit on your desk

The reason is simple....

As you get older you go blind.... the bigger the screen the bigger the picture... but that is for the future.

For now.... wow.... The Pacific is waaaay bigger than I thought..... sensation kicks in.

The biggest problem (and there are plethora of problems with LCD monitors ) is that it works OK ONLY in native resolution (i.e. the resolution of the LCD matrix)... so if you buy, let's say, FullHD 1920x1080 24" LCD you simply have to have desktop set to that resolution and you have to run every single game at that resolution as well...

For printers, I recommend one where each color is a separate cartridge. I absolutely hate having to buy a color cartridge (with all 3 colors in the same cartridge) when only one color is empty.
