I'm convinced Mindanao will become a critical important defensive zone;
- It can intercept enemy invasions into the SRA and Luzon and act as a buffer zone.

By placing an Air Fleet HQ with range 5 in the middle of a size 9 base all the bases within the circle on the picture will receive support.
This is yet the best place to implement our mutually supporting fighter base concept, even Andy can't shut down all these bases.

I really plan to put a lot of fighters here when the time comes...for now we build, reinforce, stockpile and prepare.

Status: offline 		Mindanao, good concept -- if Andy takes the bait.  So late in the war he must rush and he can't spend much time with the Philippines.  If he runs into heavy resistance there, he might just bypass it.

The Chink Corps is badly mauled, but as long as it is damaged squads, it isn't all that terrible.  Nemo is right, this would be a good opportunity for an counterassault.  As far as I recall the latest rule change, no shock assault will be triggered on river crossings if at least 1/3 the number of the crossing forces will already be present.  But  disabled squads don't count toward that, do they?

How are you performing long range recon missions presently?  Say from Rabaul, or the southern slot, you can reach most of the OZ West coast and down to Nomuea with the H6 and H8.  Though using these large slow engine-eating monsters for recon is a bit wasteful, I have made good experiences with them.  I usually swap out pilots (I otherwise train and use them for NAVSearch and ASW) via the reserve pools, or put the good ones in sqrn reserve, and then send them off for high-alt recon at 30%+, for a day per base.  Not sure how many of those sqrns you have at hand, and can deploy for that task, but in recon they presently might be more important than any other role now.

Unfortunately Port Blair to Columbo is 22 hexes, if I recall correctly, so Ceylon it is just out of range for them.  Yet Midway to the Hawai'ian bases should be possible, Rabaul and Tulagi would be spots to base them, as well as Koepang might give accesses to ports in northern OZ.  But how to get at Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney, or even Wellington and the rest of NZ?  Perhaps with a quick CS raid?

Status: offline 		Luzon will also be fortified; the idea is to make Mindanao into a big PITA and force Andy to do something about it - that is if he wants to revisit the PI's.
I was expecting more Allied troops to move east from Toungoo today; another poor Chinese 1/3 Corps crossed and shock attacked. Losses were extreme - as expected.

We don't have any CS's left; they have all been converted to light carriers.
Instead I use AVs; currently 3 have been deployed for recon roles.
- Our Irving recon planes have a range of 23 hexes, the Mavis and Emily search planes can reach 29 hexes.
So we continually recon Pearl Harbour from Line Islands, Noumea and Luganville from Guadalcanal, Brisbane and Townsville from bases south in the Coral Sea, Darwin and Northern Oz from the SRA.
The only black spots as mentioned are New Zealand, Perth, Melbourne and the US West Coast. Subs with search planes and AVs will recon these areas and try to pick up activity.

Tomorrow all our units in Pegu will have moved south to the hex north of Moulmein.
This will complete our evacuation of the Rangoon region.

Status: offline 		Today we showed Andy that Rangoon is going to be vulnerable; the largest combined sweep so far in the war cleared the skies over Rangoon for our (inefficient) bombers.
If Japan had 4Es we would have won this war easily....

We also counterattacked the poor Chinese (according to Andy moved against our troops by mistake)and sent the sorry remnants back over the river in shreds!
Our army in Pego has moved south and all our supply problems have been solved

With 4000 AV in Moulmein it will be difficult for Andy to weaken his Pegu - Rangoon garrisons.
A large strategic reserve will now be established at Singapore.

so, Rangoon AF is already operational? (according to few enemy ac destroyed on the ground)

if not, gather all available ac and continue with attacks like this one . And prepare Navy - i see some enemy ships on pics attached.... you can suprise Andy while he is commited to Rangoon defense, i guess

- Problem is that Allied AA guns are stronger than Jap medium bombers...
I simply don't have enough medium bombers to suppress Rangoon in the long run and the port is to small for large warships, so bombarding with DDs and CLs is out of the question.
Only minesweepers and MTBs there for now.

Take a look at how the Allied 4Es obliterated Milne Bay with a 1000 hits today.

Yes, Allies are low on supplies and it would have been problematic for Andy if we had stayed and fought..but the danger of being cut of or staying in clear hex ruled that out.
Checked bases around Anchorage last turn, very little activity but I will be sending more assets there to actively scout the region.

Sumatra has been prepared; the question is how to deploy our 8-10 reserve divisions for Malay, Burma, Indo-China, Sumatra and the SRA.
Currently I have placed a division at Rahaeng, a large brigade in Bangkok and Saigon, a division of troops at Tavoy and the base south of it.
1 division is at Victoria Point, another in the hex to the right of Victoria Point. 2 divisions are at Singapore (planning to move one to Medan as Sumatra reserve).
1,5 divisions are currently shipping into Malaya.

To have any effect we need to be able to ship 3-5 divisions for a quick counterattack.
- Still, Andy probably need to prepare his divisions for new targets and as mentioned already, he can't reduce his Burma armies too much since he's facing ~7000 AV of Jap troops in that region.

I've added a terrain overview today; had hoped that forest would provide better defensive value than jungle, but it's the same.
Andy will almost certainly launch his next attacks at targets without rough terrain.

What I'm mulling about is whether the hex north of Moulmein is the ideal place for our main army and what kind of unmodified AV should we place here?
The army east of Toungoo is ordered to march to Chiang Mai; this will take a month or so but that's ok - we can cancell the move if we decide we want to stay.

According to rules Milne Bay is exactly OUT of supply range from PM (5 hexex x 20 points), so you can expect landing there any moment. I hope you have some ships in the area.

The only worthy target in Burma was Rangoon, so if not all Divisions were planning for it, they can already be prepared for another step (whatever is the name of this island on the west).

Yup, base is hardly a right target for defense, because 4E will destroy all supply in one day. You should think about sending some forces north, to deal with Chinese east of Mandalay. They should be short on AT, so Tank Division can be good.
I am actually do not expect serious attempt against Moulmein. Maybe if Andy can afford to send bombarding TF, but attack E, or NE is more possible, to cut of your remaining forces in north.

Not familiar with ground movement in Allied edition, but can Andy block your force in hex north of Moulmein if he:

a) move his troops to hex north of Moulmein
b) commit amphibious assault on Moulmein?

But i do agree with Inquisitor, you dont have to worry about further steamroller campaign in Burma. In fact that would be best option for you (trading land for time). I already mentioned how you can make a clear profit from Andy's overland campaign if he choose this option.

However, as far as i know him, he will try something else. In game against me he landed at VP IIRC and then in southern Malaya (where i managed to drove him into sea), and then in Sumatra. Anyway, as long as you keep Imperial Navy in this area you will be able to counter those amphibious operations.

Status: offline 		Probably right -- if within the next days Andy doesn't make a serious show of force north of Moulmein, he might just be satisfied with cleaning the rear and resting while detaching healthy units for other duties until monsoon is over.  If I were him, my next targets would be Port Blair, followed by a landing at Victoria point, and depending on whether that would go well, either a transfer of the Burma Army to that point an driving E-NE to cut of Moulmein, or alternatively pushing from the latter south. 

Any move against PB or VP, if it is to come before Rangoon's port is fixed, will likely come from NE India or Ceylon. With far away jump-off bases, there will be little warning where his next amphib OP will hit.  The best defense is what you have been doing all along -- placing holding forces at strongpoint and reinforce on need with a reaction force.  My suggestion would be holding this force ready at Singapore, with all the AP and AK at hand that are necessary.  Perhaps I'd even occasionally perform "loading exercises", which might show on Andy's Intel and confuse him a little. 
I'd even gamble at this point and reduce the force at Moulmein, Tavoy and Victoria Point at the risk of weakening front and flanks to send a few additional Divs to form a bigger reaction force.  If Andy lands at VP, with KB cover or simply by RR you probably can still bring the reaction force to bear quick enough to throw him back.  The catch is, if KB is busy here, a quick exploit from Darwin into the DEI, or in CentPac might become possible for Andy unopposed.

A landing in the Malaya or the Southern Sumatra - Western Borneo - Java triangle would at this point better be sustained from Perth than from India.  Too dangerous and too far with KB intact, and Andy will only have enough CV/L/E to assist one amphibious operation at a time.  In case of the SE DEI, there are so many LBA bases that his CV support will be necessary there for a couple of days or weeks before his LBA can fully take over convoy security as well -- see Waingapoo. 
It would cause delays for anything out in NorPac or CentPac.  And surely Andy won't have tons of Marine and US Army units sitting around idle... If he doesn't commit them to island hopping in the Solomons, with or without CV support, they must soon show elsewhere between Perth and Kiska.  CV have been a no-show at PM, will therefore likely remain so for Milne bay -- under LBA cover anyway.  So where is the bulk of his AP, APA,... CV and BB?  And what would be the easiest target from NorPac to SoPac of some strategic benefit to hit first, merge the new CV fleet into a weapon, and perhaps even draw KB into an ambush?  Guadalcanal? Midway? Line Islands? Aleutians?  Guadalcanal can happen by suppression from PM, without CV. Midway and Line Islands bear greater long-term benefits than the others, and have the advantage of the safe LBA umbrella of Pearl.  Plus, with them gone, your intel would also run dry.  So I'd rather expect a blow there before anything else.

Late edits:
(1) Bummer, the railing of reinforcements from and to VP or Moulmein will of course only work of the late war map will be done it time -- there should have been a mention up there... Presently, you could only play a gamble with KB in readiness to cover the transport of a reaction force.
(2) Looking at the map again, I wouldn't land at VP. It is more vulnerable than other bases on the coast due to the close RR, and doesn't allow much better port facilities than... Mergui!?

- I do hope Andy makes a lunge for it...would be a good opportunity to inflict damage.

Mobile reserves in Malaya and IndoChina is easy; same with Java. Sumatra is more rough terrained and roadnet isn't so good.
We therefore have to rely on 3 large size 9 air bases nearby Sumatra for protection until Combined Fleet and strat reserves can be moved in.

It's also a good thing if Andy spends time on capturing Port Blair; will take some effort!
The question with Moulmein is more challenging - I don't plan of fighting inside the city but north of it.
Supplies can't be destroyed in the field as easily as when the troops are camped down town....

Exactly how many troops we need around Moulmein is a difficult question. If we have too few we may be routed and that's a risk we can't take.
A minimum of 2000 AV with reserves in Moulmein is the minimum me thinks.

Think I posted the wrong combat summary, was for 11.03 instead of 12.03...

Fortunately not Pauk, it's all about hex side controll now. If Andy lands at Moulmein we will still be controlling all inland hex sides.
Andy has a dilemma, a major amph landing outside of his LBA zones will probably be too risky. He can't fight both Combined Fleet and our LBA with his navies alone.
So I think we can limit the major risk zones to areas within Allied LBA range. The only exceptions are probably Midway and Line Islands. A quick strike towards these bases after KB has been spotted somewhere far away could work...but that's also ok. Spend time and resources in the middle of nowhere

I'm planning to make Victoria Point into a choke point; very easy to move reinforcements there and it's within range of Medan, Singapore and Bangkok air bases.
Landings further to the south is way to risky, outside of Allied LBA in smack in the center of our Singapore region. Medan is well protected and a hub in its own.

I remember having lost many KB carriers in 1943-44 raids in previous games. While I'm still eager to use them for raids and counterstrikes it's even more important to keep the fleet intact for the next major encounter with the rebuilt Allied fleets. We get another 3 fleet carriers by July 44, this will boost our CV airstrength to 1450.

We're planning to upgrade to a new beta patch, which one would you recommend using?
There will also be a break in the game soon, more RL events coming up.

PS! Forgot to add a comment about the industry production screen further up.
I have 10 factories in the Home Islands were I wish to expand industry but it requires 20k supplies to do so.
Since only main bases have 20k supplies there are many smaller bases with industry that can't be expanded unless I use the draw supply feature.
- Using draw supplies for more than one base efficiently makes sure that no other base in the Home Islands have 20k+ supplies anymore.
Tokyo actually goes in supply shortage then.

So Home Island industry is currently limited to expanding in more than a few bases at a time.
Not good so let me know if you know how to work around this....

Seems like we update to 1108q3 already from next turn.

Supply reserves are down to 2.6 million; getting increasingly concerned; fuel and oil isn't a problem but supplies are shrinking way to fast.
Need help here guys; how to reduce supply waste most efficiently?

Problem is that I can dump supplies into Burma theater and it all just dissappeares in no time.

Here is a double update; last until late next week.
We can now bomb and hit Rangoon at will.
Allied heavies pound Milne Bay to dust; B-24s score 70% hit ratios constantly.
While 75 of our bombers score 86 hits from 15k feet against light AA and light clouds 10 Libs can do the same..

I have increased our intel gathering activities and today I post some of the results:
A single destroyer sails into Darwin - hunted a convoy our LBA attacked (and missed).
Didn't see a strong escort; several transports /APA's and an AVD torched or sunk.

- Slight activity in Darwin and northern Oz in general.

- Same at Perth, little or no activity and almost no ground units reported.

- Pearl Harbour is quite busy, but that's more of a norm so hard to make anything out of those sighting.

- Townsville is rather busy, lots of ac and ships but no major enemy assets spotted neither there or at Noumea.

- Today we got more interesting intel from Ceylon; a sub was spotted and attacked (and finally sunk) by a British destroyer acting as escort for a battleship and a battlecruiser.
This shows that Andy got intentions in the Indian Ocean.

My bet would be that Port Blair is going to feel the fire soon.
Possible that Andy will hit Sumatra as well while a diversion is staged at Milne Bay or Line Islands / Midway.

There is a 1108q3a that fixes some bug that was quickly noticed in 1108q3.

I found that once you get supplies into Burma they'll be sucked back across the trails to Bangkok (and further on to Singapore, Saigon, etc.) if that command HQ is in a base further back. You can also see something similar if one of that bases has the supply draw feature enabled.

Regarding the global supplies, do you have any fort construction programs going on? Going from level 6 to 9 seems to cost about 100k supplies for a single base so that will quickly add up. Industry expansion/repair can of course also be a culprit.

Status: offline 		Interesting Intel, and thumbs up for the DD run into Darwin.  That was bold, but very useful!  Any has lost quite a few APA by now, that must hurt?
So N and W OZ is silent, E OZ shows AC and ships, but no major warships and additional LCU?  I am curious to see the intel from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, as well as New Zealand. So far looks like there is nothing big in the making between PM and Nomuea, but this can still amount to an LBA covered invasion of Milne Bay, or ops against southerm Solomons. Btw, who owns Espritu Santo? And it also suggests that DEI is safe for now.
Ceylon, well, perhaps Port Blair, but if so, when?  That question must depend on air cover, i.e. CV.  Either he has all his CV united in Indian waters, or he must make a Port Blair invasion dependent on a carrier battle in the Pacific. That leaves Midway, Line Islands, and Aleutians -- the first two of which are at least close to Pearl's air cover if something would go wrong badly.  But this is still a lot of speculation -- if you knew the rough date for anything to happen, you could sneak KB forward into the rear of Wake or Line Islands, out of Andy's recon reach, but I doubt you can really sustain the fleet there for more than 2 weeks, and likely will be detected much earlier.  The question remains: where are his carriers?

As for the supply -- all you can do is to shut down factory expansions and repairs where feasible, and reduce any port/airfield/fort expansions to a minimum throughout the Empire. Once our airframe losses drop, and LCU losses, this might also save some. Yet repairs of your bombed bases will keep eating a lot. Usually such a drop in supplies should only occur in the first 6 months of a GC, when aggressively expanding industry and the facilities at conquered bases, but not much later.  I am afraid that Andy might bring down your game by just toasting all of your supply with his 4EB, which would not be very historical and ruin an otherwise great game/AAR.  Perhaps you should discuss this with him? Maybe Andy can get some rethinking of this started with the devs?

Few months ago, you have said, that you will close down some LI factories, to conserve fuel, by not transporting that much Resources (and I have said, that you should NOT, because you will need all supply ). Have you turned them back on?

Also, it is 1944, and if you were transporting only fuel to Japan, there is already no oil at islands, so Refineries there stay idle. If you begin hauling oil now, you will get around 1000 supply per day, because there are hundreds of Refineries in Japan.

This whole destroying of supply by planes can have also benefit. Just find a base in Burma, on clear terrain, where there is at least one enemy Division, and start destroying it. Supply will be drawn every time, because LCU will need it.

In beta some reporting was changed. It seems hits which generated ZERO damage, are also reported, but I am guessing it should show for both sides, not only for one.
Anyway, you can probably safely use green pilots for bombers. After all their experience is needed only to hit ships, and they will train quicker by actually bombarding, than just training. Just make sure, there will be no enemy CAP there. The old WITP China training way

Also, do not be surprised in latest beta, where you will see dozens of damaged planes, during air base bombing. It was always there, just not reported.

Andy seems not to care for his transports. He probably thinks that he has enough to bother. But this is not true in the AE (it wasn't even in WITP). He propably doesn't know how much supplies B-29's consume. Good for the Empire!

10 days of summer and cheap beers

We have updated to the latest beta patch: [1108q5]
Seems like it offers quite a lot new stuff, need to study it in detail.

First impression: seems stable and game runs smoothly.
Andy tried to hit Port Blair with B-24s at max range. Our 30 George fighters claimed 25 kills and our base was not ripped to pieces
Not sure how much this is because of the patch, but we can always hope....

Andy knows his logistics, don't think he'll run out of fuel or supply anytime soon.

I followed your advice Inq, all LI factories remained turned on!
Souther Area HQ is at Singer; could move it to Bangkok but Singapore is also a hub were I need a steady supply source.

Intel seems more...generous now; more detailed info about enemy units in places like Ceylon, Brisbane, Noumea, PH and Townsville.
Will continue to monitor the reports, maybe the patch has adjusted this as well.

The ML vessels with torpedoes can still not be moved to pools or converted to other than ML - with DC.
The ability to finally halt ALL vessels construction based on type was a godsend; no more AK-Ls are being produced

Status: offline 		In general ground casualties seems lower now.
We set a CAP trap over our army south of Pegu, the kill list became long as Andy didn't sweep.

Testing enemy strength at PM and lost a few light cargo ships.
There are now night fighters, search planes, CAP fighters, escorts, medium bombers and naval bombers at PM.

Status: offline 		Hey PzB! I absolutely LOVE the AAR! Its like reading a new history book on the pacific war! Im only on page 40 of the AAR, but just wanted to let you know ya made a fan out of me lol!

I've sent a PM back to you.

I sent 2 subs into Colombo harbour as we have sighted much activity; we found gold!
A tanker convoy unloading fuel...and it looks like escorts were disbanded in order to make room for the tankers to dock.
- We lit up 2 tankers, unfortunately dud torps let 2 others escape

There is no doubt that Andy is building up at Colombo; an invasion against Malaya - Sumatra region is likely and Port Blair is a hot candidate nr 1.
In New Guinea Buna is singled out as the next target and the Americal Div is marching towards the place which is now low on supplies.
It will take a major effort to reinforce the place; question is whether it's worth it.

Status: offline 		Heavy fighting in the air: we sweep Rangoon - numerous enemy fighters now in place.
Can we wrestle air superiority over Rangoon?

Allies hit Umbon island (east of Lae) with all they have: 80 fighters, 47 medium bombers and 136 heavy bombers dusted the place.
Still, we inflicted many losses on the Allied air units!


AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 17, 44

Sub - ASW Attacks

As expected enemy asw vessels were in place today; still we had to try and hit the high-value tankers.
Not hits were scored and we lost 1 sub with another suffering heavy damage.

I have spotted Allied subs moving back for another round; immediate action has been ordered.

Status: offline 		That was only a small sweep; first when Andy sent in the bulk of his fighter force did we committ.
250 fighters sweeping Rangoon today, ~140 went in coordinated.
The new air combat model still restricts air combat so while our smallers strikes suffer our big sweep fail to
take sufficient advantage of their superior numbers.

Result is that we roughly achieves a 1-1 kill ratio with 32 pilots KIA.

What do you think, is it worth a prolonged effort?

Andy knows there is a supply issue and says there's little to be done about it without re-designing the entire model.
But yes, it has been an annoyance for a looong time for me.

In Japan I'm still struggling to have enough supplies in more than 1-2 places at the same time in order to expand factories.
Some Zeke fighter bombers have been at 0/12 for 3 months now as the base is a minor one with only 500 supplies, far from enough to expand.
By using the supply pull even Tokyo gets into the red....

The only solution would be to make a change that allowed us to set the exact supply level desired for the different bases, e.g. 20000.

Nah, you should keep your pilots for .... errrrr... i dont know. The problem is, with new air to air combat model that CAP is almost useless (when we are talking about being Japs in '44) ...

anyway, i think you should strike only when you know that you can achive some success, tactical or strategical. Let Andy to act as a hammer, keep your elite airforce safe.... and use only green pilots and limited air force (outclassed planes, backed with few new generation ACs --- sooner or latter you will get your golden chance to strike with all out attack on him - all you have to do is sit and wait and wait him to become reckless and easy going - which will certainly happen if you adopt "oh boy im finished" strategy..

damn, i'm feeling ready to try this Allied Edition
