Can't finish a game turn without the game crashing with a Runtime C++ error in the latest beta patch.

1.04 version works fine.

When exactly it happens? Does it happen all the time with various saves?

I believe i solved the problem by re installing the game. The error poped up every time i tried to end a turn, but seems to be solved for now.

Hm, it would be too big to be unnoticed by the test team. Do you have a free space on the disk drive?

Or do you have Vista/Win7 and the game installed into UAC-protected c:\program files ?
->Might be a permission issue then.

Could be the old VC++ redistributables. The MS C++ libraries get patched every so often by Microsoft, and it caused considerable strife for Witp:AE and its tools. I keep my PC up to date with patches which meant that the dev environment got updated and the new libraries were installed into the EXE. To play the EXE, you then needed a minimum library version of the one I patched to.

I would suggest checking that you have the latest of these installed - I am guessing that you would only need 2008 or 2010. It depends on the library set used by WitE dev.

Attached is an example of last month's C++ versions.

Hope this is helpful.

With c++ runtime libraries you typically only nee the most recent version, on my Win7 x64 Prof version I have all in all 6 c++ runtime version, 3 in x86 and 3 in x64 (2005, 2008 and 2010).
Most recent version of 2005 x86 is 8.0.61001, 2008 and 2010 in the screenshot are the latest versions although 2008 has multiple old version installed as well.

Updating the runtime 2010 libraries from 10.0.3 to 10.0.4 did not solve the problem

Windows 7 is up to date as well.
Direct X 11 up to date.
Graphic drivers up to date.

Might need to wait till Helpless signons on to see which VC++ version (2005,2008,2010) WitE uses.

Do you have auto save enabled? Can you try to end turn with autosave disabled? Would it crash?

Yes, i have it enabled.

Hmm, disabling auto save enables me to end turns properly, but trying to save manually still crashes the game.

Ok, so the problem probably is with the disk access. You mentioned that it worked for some time after reinstall, right?

Do you run at as administrator user? Can you check AV software?

There are some known issues with some external software. Ex. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307817

You may also update VC++ 2008 as it may interfere.

Tried running the game executable (War in the East, not autorun) with "run as administrator" and the behavior is the same. Crash with "Save game" or "End turn" if auto save is enabled.

Running AVG anti-virus always in the background, but will try to run the game with it disabled and will report on it.

Don't even have office installed (use Open Office), so, i doubt that is the problem.

VC++ 2008 is up to date as far as i can tell, can't find a newer version then 9.0.30729, am i missing something?

The game is running just fine if i switch to 1.04 version

Most recent c++ versions x86:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/B/4/8B42259F-5D70-43F4-AC2E-4B208FD8D66A/vcredist_x86.EXE (2005)
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/D/8/5D8C65CB-C849-4025-8E95-C3966CAFD8AE/vcredist_x86.exe (2008)
http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/5/165255E7-1014-4D0A-B094-B6A430A6BFFC/vcredist_x86.exe (2010)

For unknown/strange reasons M$ decided to use the same name for all of them so users have to rename them if they want to keep 'em ....

Have you tried to change ggwite.exe to be always run with admin rights ?

Where do you have the game installed to? It could be that you initially were able to run it after the install because you were still in an elevated permissions mode?

You could try reinstalling the game to a custom folder in the root and see if that helps. Or even into a folder in your My Documents folder - it should be certainly able to write to there.

Cheers

Pip

Uninstalled the game and made a clean install in a different directory.

1.0 Version is working with no crashes.
1.04.40 Version is working with no crashes. I can save, load games, end turns, no problems.
1.05.30 Version. First run everything is working. I can save, load game and end turns.
1.05.30 Version. Closed the game. Second run, crash at save game or end turn (with auto-save on).

From here on, the game just crashes at end turn/save game. If i roll back to 1.04, its back to working. Something changed between 1.04 and 1.05 that is in conflict with my machine/system. Any thing about my PC that i can provide to you folks that can help tracking down this problem?

I don't have the game available at the moment, but does it save into a different nameor slot each time.
In other words, is it saving over an existing game save or is it creating a new save file each time.

If it is saving over same name, you might try using a different name or deleting the old save before it saves the new one just to see if that makes any difference - might be a save access issue.
