These arachnid predators are rumored to be left overs from a long dead species. Originally created to serve as miners, the Arachtons have gained animal sentience and the ability to replicate, drawing resources from asteroid fields, planetary ring systems and the unfortunate passing ship. Unsuspecting travelers are captured within the electromagnetic webs that are spread across any available debris field, where the victims are reduced to their base elements for consumption and replication. These creatures exist to continue their species, and cannot be reasoned with. Their driving force is species propagation, and to that end they will attack any and all forces that come within their territory. Individually the Arachtons are not much of a threat, but once ensnared the creatures will swarm their victim until destroyed. It is unknown how many of these creatures exist, although sightings are reported galaxy wide.

Liking the web idea, Wisky. Have you thought about how they travel to and from their base, and what their base looks like?

Spiders in space -that's plain scary. It's a good idea Wisky. I'm admiring the pic, great work man. I especially like the webs and the sinister look of the spiders. Looking forward to seeing any more of your artwork!

Webbco- no base per se, just loiter amongst debris fields, perhaps their eggs are carried along with cosmic winds, or from supernova blasts (riding the shockwave). I see them more as local hazards as opposed to any great baddies-my assumption would be they inhabit hollowed out asteroids, a sort of nest...(probably should have put that into the description, but thats why peer feedback is so good-you guys bring up the questions I might not have thought about!

I misread your original post where you said: "...where the victims are reduced to their base elements for consumption and replication." I can certainly imagine these things being more of the loitering kind. Do you think there would be any chance of escape for a trapped vessel?!

Webbco- the only escape would be firepower, and good engines- the best tactic would be to patrol a suspected are with at least two craft, if one were to be caught, the other could engage from a distance to shatter the webs, kill of the spiders, or retrieve the doomed ship's log bouy...

Congratulation for having drawn some art design ! (You might have been the only one so far, aren't you ?)

The creature eats ships to replicate. That's simple but efficient. I like that (Though, maybe not that different from the pirates...)

Wisky is indeed first person with own art for the creature. Thumbs up for that!

Good idea all around.
Funny thing: I've never really been afraid of spiders. They are relatively small here in Finland so that may have to do something with it. I also thing that furry spiders like tarantulas are quite adorable in some strange way.
