Combat

The SS S-34, about 77 miles SE of Gili Gili, attacked a heavily escorted AP, but failed to score.

Ichang was swept by 24 X P-40N and was met by 6 X Tojo and 16 X Tony. 4 X Tojo were shot down and the Japanese lost 2 of the Tonys while 5 of the Chinese Warhawks went down.

Rangoon was bombed by 40 X B-24D, of which 13 were damaged, and 60 X P-38G. The air field was lightly damaged and troops had moderate losses.

Jaluit was raided by 21 X B-25J (6 damaged) and they did light damage to the port. Then another 26 X B-25J and 50 X P-38G showed up and 4 of the bombers were damaged while they inflicted additional moderate damage to the port.
Lunga was bombed by 19 X B-17E (6 damaged) and they caused light casualties to the troops.

19 X Corsair IV attacked the PTs near Rangoon and they drilled 2 of the 3 of them pretty good with their .50s.

A small convoy Japanese near Gili Gili drew the attention of Allied planes and 24 X B-17E and 12 X B-24D attacked it. The ships were defended by 16 X Zeke, 4 X Tojo and 4 X Tony. The bombers keep their formations tight and 9 X Zeke were damaged, 2 X Tojo were downed and 2 X Tony were shot up while a Flying Fortress was destroyed (5 damaged) and 2 Liberators went down (8 damaged). The AP was ravaged by 6 bomb hits that left it listing heavily and on fire.

Aussie troops proudly marched into Broome amid the cheers of the local populace.

The 3rd Australian Brigade is poised on the outskirts of Wyndham facing a Japanese unit of unknown size or type. They will bombard until additional combat units move up. PM Curtin is concerned about Broome and says, “It doesn't make any sense to finally contact the enemy there.” He's told that it's believed that a lack of shipping caused the troops there to get caught by Hedge Cutter.

Topsys continue to fly into Tulagi, even though they are being intercepted.

The USN CVTFs replenish at sea and are on guard as it's now known that the IJN is out and about, in force.

Ed is upset, for a change, as his Old Gals could've been in a position to intercept the IJN surface TFs before they could've harmed the sweepers, but he was ordered to pull back 100 miles and cover the replenishment TFs. This is no way to run a war, he thinks. He holds a meeting with his staff and they concur that there has been a gross misuse of the force available.

Bill observes as a Lt maneuvers the Helena alongside of an AO. The man appears to be a natural as the CL glides into and holds her position until the fuel transfer is complete. This ship's crew is turning out to be better than he could have hoped for. After they return to their station in the TF's formation he retires to his cabin for some badly needed rest. He rereads a letter from Sandy and falls asleep.

Nigel skips his report that is due as a Japanese patrol has been working this area and playing cat and mouse all day doesn't lend itself to making radio contact on schedule. He tired and thirsty as his canteen is empty. He learned long ago that a partially full canteen makes noise as the water can slosh around. Even the slightest noise can be one's death warrant. Hell, he thinks, I'd love to have a smoke knowing that the smell would also spell doom.

Elaine sits on her sister's bed talking about Gil. She admits to liking him and her sister laughs and says, “Maybe you like him a little or a lot?” The answer is the latter.

The 8th British Army took Brindisi today.

Yesterday the Red Army took Novorossiysk.

Combat

The SS Cuttlefish was attacked by MSWs and PCs near Shortlands. The Japanese never really had a firm fix on the sub's position so not even a near miss occurred.

Ichang was swept by 16 X P-40N and 6 X Zeke, 4 X Tojo and 34 X Tony opposed them. In the melee 5 Warhawks were lost and another was damaged while the Japanese were unharmed. Chinese commanders hope to wear down the Japanese with constant pressure, but days like today give them pause.

Jaluit was hit by 8 X B-25J, 1 of which was damaged, and the bombs all fell short of their intended target. It is hoped that these green aircrews will gain experience and then be deployed to a more active location. Then 35 X B-25J and 47 X P-38G came along and the Japanese gunners damaged 8 bombers and again not a single bomb scored a hit on the target. This constant air activity in this area is intended to keep Japanese forces in place while the real action is elsewhere.

The Japanese ship near Munda was under the protection of 3 Zeros when 29 X SBD, 18 X TBF, 75 X F4F-4 and 56 X F6F appeared. All of the Zeros were splashed before they knew what hit them and the AP was hit by 7 bombs and was left settling by the bow and burning fiercely only to sink a little later. All of the USN's planes departed unscathed.

The bombardment of the Japanese at Wyndham revealed to the forward observers that the unit is very weak and an assault is planned for tomorrow.

The BB Tennessee has had her flooding greatly reduced and it is hoped that she will be able to get back out to sea soon and head for a shipyard for her repairs to be completed.

The BB Valiant and CL Dauntless are expected to reach port tomorrow and their flooding will be dealt with then before they make for a repair yard.

The DMS Chandler was scuttled today as her foredeck was awash and her pumps had quit.

The USN continues to search out the IJN, but as usual the Japanese prove to be an elusive target.

Pete, having his usual tea while reading the newspaper still can't believe that the Japanese have appeared to have quit Australia without a fight. “There must be more to it than meets the eye,” he says to a customer. “They aren't the type to shy away from a fight.”

Dave is overjoyed as he looks a a pile of parts that he needed to fix cars and trucks. Sandy has tried talking him out of fixing the trucks as cars are much easier to deal with. His supplier also threw him a pound of coffee and that is the crown jewel of the order.

Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Dekanozov arrived in Stockholm. German Foreign Minister Von Ribbentrop pleads with Hitler to listen to terms that Stalin might offer. Hitler refuses and the Soviet mission returns to Moscow after waiting for 4 days.

Combat

The SS Haddo, about 78 miles E of Aomori, underwent a half halfhearted attack by IJN DDs, who didn't come close to hitting her. A short time later the DDs tried again with the same results.

The SS Pargo, 143 miles E of Kagoshima, torpedoed an AP, setting it on fire. The DD escort couldn't locate the sub.

Near Shortlands 28 X SBD, 5 X F4F-4 and 11 X F6F pounced on 3 X MSW, scoring multiple hits on each of them. All 3 ships were heavily damaged and burning as the attack ended leaving all of them in sinking condition.

Aussie troops attacked the Japanese at Wyndham, reducing the fortifications a bit while sustaining very light losses. Japanese casualties were thought to have been moderate. Additional Allied troops are moving into position to join in the next assault.

Bill stands on the bridge watching the coming and going of formations of planes and wonders what they're up to. He knows that the hunt continues for the IJN, but so far nothing.

Ed's BB's are thirsty and as they take their turns replenishing he scans the horizon. His second worst nightmare, after the mines, is a surprise attack by Japanese planes during this delicate process. There are plenty of Wildcats flying their racetrack patterns as they protect the replenishment TFs.

Gil finds he can send and receive Morse faster than anyone else in his class. He also really enjoys working on the radios. Fixing them is something that he enjoys doing, while others mutter curses under their breath. What he likes the most though is the time he spends with Elaine.

Gunny broke up a fight between 2 of his men and then said, “Save it for the Japs.” The cramped quarters on the transports and men primed for combat is a bad combination. He asks the company CO when they will depart, but the answer was an “I don't know. Something must be wrong.”

HQs for SOPAC issue an new set of orders that the troops disembark at Luganville. Without sweeping the minefields and the KB still out there somewhere the risk to invasion is just to high. Washington is considering scrubbing Operation Solomon.

The Chinese Parliament elected General Chiang Kai-Shek President of the Chinese Republic.

The Germans counter attacked with 6 divisions at Salerno, forcing the US 5th Army back towards the beaches.

Combat

The SS Herring was about 83 miles SW of Kagoashima when she spotted and attacked a heavily escorted AK. Without ever being detected during the stalking or attack she put 3 fish into the hapless vessel which quickly sank.

Lunga was bombed by 170 X B-24D, of which flak downed 1 and damaged 7 others. The port took a very heavy pounding and fuel stocks went up like a roman candle and supply dumps got plastered too.

Elements of the IJA 33rd Division, in the Myitkyina area, suffered an attack by 36 X B-25J and 48 X P-38G. AA damaged 7 of the bombers and troop casualties were light.

Wyndham fell to the Allies today as the Japanese troops sustained heavy losses while the Allies had light casualties. The populace went on a wild celebration with their liberation. The surviving Japanese troops shot themselves or died clutching hand grenades rather than surrender.

The DMS Wasmuth staggered into Luganville today and work will begin immediately on her as she's in a horrible state.

PM Curtin issued a statement to the Australian press in which he said that he and all Australians will never rest until every inch of their homeland is rid of invaders.

The USN continues it's hunt of the Japanese fleet which is out there somewhere, lurking.

Sandy spends her afternoon rereading old letters from Bill and tries to fight back the tears that well up in her eyes. Damned war, she thinks.

The troops are marching down to the docks from the ships that they just recently boarded. Gunny and Slim are happy to get off the ship even though they know that the war isn't going away without their being involved in more fighting.

Nigel has been unable, unwilling to take the risk, to send a message out. “They can think that we're all dead for all I care,” he says to his helpers. “They treat us like we are so from now on we won't risk our necks until things cool off around here.” The Japanese, by his figuring, have at least 2 divisions and lots of support troops on the island. Staying alive will be difficult as eluding the many patrols while getting food and water is a problem.

FDR is demanding to know what went wrong with Operation King and the answers given to him aren't going to make him any happier. “I have to deal with an electorate and those people want this war brought to a swift an successful conclusion. Those 2 Army Divisions on loan from CENPAC being used as a reserve force. Can they be released back to their command and possible accelerate things there a bit? I need something, anything, good to tell the American public. Success in Australia is great for them and all good news for the Allies is good for us, but I need something where we kick the Japanese out of somewhere on our own.” His staffers all mutter in agreement and scurry off to see what can be done. The generals and admirals depart to convene a meeting of their own to see what can be done.

The Germans evacuated Bryansk today.

Combat

The IJN TF near Shortlands was jumped by 85 X SBD, 18 X TBF, 18 X TBM, 75 X F4F-4 and 55 X F6F of which 3 X SBD, 3 X TBF and 3 X TBM were damaged by AA. 5 X DD were ravaged by multiple bomb hits and some fish and 3 of the 4 ARs were also pounded. A 2nd attack on a TF, this time 5 X MSW, by 55 X SBD, 18 X TBF (1 damaged) and 16 X TBM (1 damaged) left all of the vessels heavily damaged and on fire. Another attack on the ships near Shortlands by 93 X SBD (1 damaged), 48 X TBF (2 damaged) and 28 X TBM found 3 X DD and 4 X AR still afloat, though heavily damaged. By the time the planes were done with them all of the ships save 1 AR had sustained additional hits.

An attack on USN CVTFs, about 76 miles SW of Shortlands, by 23 X Betty and their escort of 14 X Zero and 16 X Jack ran into a CAP of 102 X F4F-4 and 95 X F6F. The air battle was quick and lopsided with all of the Japanese planes splashed long before they could attack any of the ships. A Wildcat went down (7 damaged) and a Hellcat was destroyed (5 damaged).

A Japanese DD, near Buin, that was under the protective cover of 15 X Nick was pounced on by 27 X SBD, 17 X TBM, 67 X F4F-4 and 50 X F6F. The fighters dispatched all of the Nicks and the planes pounded the ship with bombs leaving it a wreck. No planes were damaged in the battle.

The day's attacks produced the confirmed destruction of 6 X DD, 5 X MSW and an AR. It had been reported that IJN CVs and BBs were at Shortlands yesterday, but either the reports were false of the ships left in the night.

The DMS Zane arrived at Luganville with her bow awash. It's hoped that she can now be saved and sent on to a yard to be made good as new.

The flooding suffered by the BB Tennessee has been virtually eliminated. The ship will be made ready for sea so she can return to the US for extensive repairs.

Bill was in total awe as he watched the formations of planes come and go. He heard reports of the attacks on the Japanese and what happened to the Japanese attack. He thinks back to the days spent in the bowels of the Pentagon and his placing pins in the map. The shoe would appear to be on the other foot now. He would be dismayed to know that the transports at Luganville are busily unloading the troops of Operation King. He does wonder why the IJN has attempted to challenge the carrier raids that are going ever deeper into their bastion of power.

To date the Japanese have lost an estimated 7045 planes to the Allies 7268 and ship losses have been estimated at 226 of all types for the Japanese and the Allies have lost 177.

Gil spends a night out with Elaine. They avoid the USO Club as he has no intentions of sharing her with anybody. They stop at a soda fountain for something to drink and then pass the time talking. He can't take his eyes off of her and wonders how a beauty like her would bother with him.

Sandy got 4 letters from Bill today. They say more of the same about how he misses her, asking about Dave, but never a hint about where or what he's doing. She's decided that when he finally appears she's going to sit him down and pump him for as much information as she can get. In the meantime she contents herself with reading the letters again.

Pete picks up the newspaper and sees the huge headline proclaiming
AUSTRALIA FOR THE AUSTRALIANS!
“I suppose this means that we'll be running out of everything tonight,” he says to Sylvia as he pats her on her belly. “I hope our child never has to know a war.”

FDR has sent a note of congratulations to PM Curtin. Churchill has also done the same and the Australians in high places make sarcastic remarks about the English.

Combat

The SS Seawolf, 27 miles W of Rabaul, was attacked by 3 X DD, a PC and 4 X PG, but thanks to her radar set she wasn't caught on the surface and was able to have the time to dive deep enough to get under the depth charges. Later the Seawolf managed to locate and torpedo a TK, setting it on fire.

The SS Trout, 22 miles SW of New Hanover, tried to get an attack in on a CVE thought to have been the Unyo. Unfortunately for the sub the escorts detected and attacked her first.

The SS Bowfin, 138 miles NE of Batan Island, torpedoed a TK. In the afternoon she tagged another TK with a fish, causing fires.

Lautem was under a CAP of 6 X Zeke, 9 X Oscar and 11 X Tojo when 54 X P-38G appeared on a sweep. A wild battle followed and a Zeke was shot down, 7 X Oscar went down and 5 X Tojo were destroyed at the cost of 12 X Lightning splashed (5 damaged).

Japanese ships near Lunga were attacked by 163 X SBD, 73 X TBF, 66 X TBM, 71 X F4F-4 and 53 X F6F. The Japanese had 38 X Zeke, 21 X Jack, 9 X Tojo and 8 X Tony aloft and a furball ensued. 31 X Zeke were shot down, 11 X Jack destroyed, all of the Tojos were downed and all of the Tonys will never return to base. This was not without cost as the mission suffered 1 X SBD destroyed, 1 X TBF shot down (2 damaged), 28 Wildcats downed (3 damaged) and 15 Hellcats splashed (6 damaged). The Japanese ships were ravaged as 2 X PC were hit and burning and 8 X AP were repeatedly hammered by bombs and torpedoes leaving all of them heavily damaged and burning. Later it was confirmed that 6 APs were sunk.

As the US fleet moves towards Luganville to replenish a “Well done” is passed among all of the ships. The only worry is that fatigue of the pilots would hamper further operations so SOPAC has ordered a cessation of the attacks. The question remains the same “Where is the KB?” No matter how many ships are sunk as long as Japan's carriers roam freely the threat to Allied ops remains high.

For the last couple of days Nigel has been traveling without the radio as it's to cumbersome for a small group that has to move fast and silently. He tells his helpers that they should go back home and he'll be OK on his own. They finally agree and head off. Nigel thinks that finding 1 person in this awful place will be near impossible. He thinks to himself that as he passes where they hid the radio he'll make another plea to be taken off the island. In the meanwhile food and water remain his top priorities.

“Someplace out west? Where? When? Doesn't anybody know anything or are these just more rumors fresh out of the mill?” Gil is upset because he doesn't look forward to being based anywhere other than Pittsburgh for obvious reasons.

Pete completes his orders for spirits and tells Sylvia that as long as the celebrations continue they'll be making money hand over fist. He never imagined that life could be this good, especially with a war going on and after having lost an arm. He gives Sylvia a long hug and kiss and says, “I love you.”

FDR is concerned about the recent possible contact between Soviet and Nazi officials. “If Stalin has tricks up his sleeve then the whole face of the war can change in a flash.” A general tells him not to worry about anything as the 2 leaders hatred for one another is so great that nothing short of death will satisfy them.

The “Dambuster” squadron used 12,000 pound “Tall Boy” bombs on the Dortmund-Ems canal.

Julius Ritter, the aide to Labor Minister Fritz Sauckel, was shot to death in broad daylight by the French Resistance. The Germans would take 50 Frenchmen and execute them in reprisal.

The Americans halted the German attacks at Salerno.

Combat

The SS Blackfish, 76 miles NW of Tulagi, spotted and tried to attack 4 DDs. She never quite managed to get a favorable firing solution though. The sub later tried and failed to attack a CL.

A Japanese sub was detected by the Yorktown's escorts 19 miles E of Rennell Island. They immediately attacked and claimed multiple hits.

Lunga was raided by 47 X B-17E and 178 B-24D. The bombers were attacked by 24 X Zeke, 14 X Jack, 11 X Tojo and 3 X Tony. The fighters were determined to protect their base and flew into the tight bomber boxes and the .50 cal fire took it's toll as 13 X Zeke were shot down, 5 X Jack destroyed (4 damaged), 3 X Tojo splashed (6 damaged) and all of the Tonys were downed. Between the fighters and the flak 10 X B-17E were shot down (26 damaged) and 27 B-24D were destroyed (41 damaged). The airbase was moderately damaged, some secondary explosions reported and the troops had heavy losses.

Early morning searches have revealed that the KB has slipped in on the USN's fleet. They are within striking range and the carriers turn into the wind. Knowing that punches will be traded this day the CAP is beefed up. The first to strike was the USN at the IJN TF 137 miles S of Rennell Island with 102 X SBD, 71 X TBF, 17 X TBM, 44 X F4F-4 and 47 X F6F. The Japanese fleet tried to maneuver wildly to escape the assault while the CAP of 15 X Zeke and 36 X Zero was overwhelmed. 6 X Zeke were shot down (2 damaged) and 26 X Zero were flamed. The Japanese gunners threw everything they had at the American planes and 2 X SBD were downed (15 damaged), 3 X TBF splashed (26 damaged), 3 X TBM destroyed (3 damaged), 22 Wildcats went down and 17 Hellcats were shot down (8 damaged). The dive bombers and torpedo planes went about their deadly business, thanks to their fighter escorts doing yeoman’s work as they struck the 4 CVs. The CV Zuikaku was struck by 15 bombs and a torpedo. She was on fire and very heavily damaged. The CV Soryu absorbed 5 bomb hits and 2 torpedoes, which caused fires and very heavy damage. The CV Hiryu was hammered by 9 bomb hits and a torpedo. She was on fire with heavy damage. The CV Shokaku was hit by a bomb and a torpedo. Another attack from the Americans struck a short time later. The CAP of 4 X Zeke and 5 X Zero pounced on the unescorted Americans. 27 X SBD and 16 X TBM missed the rendezvous and they now paid for it as they lost an SBD (7 damaged) and 2 Avengers were destroyed (10 damaged). The survivors pressed home their attack and the CV Shokaku was hit by 3 more bombs. The CV Zuikaku ate 4 more bombs. The CA Kinugasa was hit by 4 bombs and was heavily damaged and burning. Then a lone TBF with 2 Wildcats showed up. The CAP of 4 X Zeke and 5 X Zero weren't in position to intercept and the Avenger placed it's torpedo into the CV Hiryu. The CAP of the same 9 planes did challenge the next wave of attackers and lost a Zero. The attack of 31 X SBD, 2 X TBF, 18 X TBM and 9 X F4F-4 suffered a damaged SBD and 3 destroyed Wildcats. The CV Soryu was pounded by 4 more bomb hits. The CV Zuikaku ate a fish. The CV Shokaku was hit by another bomb and a torpedo. The CA Kinugasa was battered by 5 bomb hits. The CVs Zuikaku and Hiryu sank as the planes were departing.

The USN fleet, 20 miles S of Rennell Island, was attacked by 80 X Judy, 65 X Kate, 7 X Zeke and 17 X Zero. The radar detected and vectored the strengthened CAP of 85 X F4F-4 and 83 X F6F out into a position to intercept. The Japanese aircraft losses were appalling as all but 1 of the Kates were destroyed, 5 X Judy survived, all of the Zekes were flamed and the Zeros were all splashed. The USN had 2 X F4F-4 destroyed (1 damaged) and a Hellcat downed (5 damaged). The Japanese survivors turned and fled dropping their ordinance harmlessly into the sea. A sub attack resulted in the CVL Independence being hit by 2 torpedoes. She was burning and heavily damaged. The escorts located and attacked the sub claiming a confirmed kill. Then what was thought to have been another sub hit the CL Columbia with 2 torpedoes. The ship was on fire with heavy damage. The escorts claimed multiple hits on the sub.

The USN CVs were returning to Luganville to restock their depleted stores when they went after the Japanese fleet. The planners were afraid that this could happen after sustained combat and it's expected losses. Things turned out pretty good though and with the almost complete demise of the IJN's air threat the Pacific will become an American lake for the USN to strike where and when it wants to with virtual impunity. Now it is up to the local commanders to pursue any surviving Japanese ships, turn towards Tulagi and engage the IJN ships heading there or to continue on to Luganville. Splitting the force is not considered an option at this point in time.

Bill listens in on radio reports sent in the clear and knows that the USN is having a big day. His crew is being kept informed and they cheer reports of burning Japanese CVs like they're at a ballgame. They await their grim task, that never comes, of having to fight off Japanese attacks. In his mind Bill composes a letter to Sandy that will never be sent telling her of a huge victory this day that should speed his return to her.

Ed sits in his chair and listens to radio reports from the pilots and wishes that his TF was around to lend a hand. The problem with his Old Gals is that they consume to much fuel and are to slow. If there are ever any landings, somewhere, then his TF can flex it's muscles. For now the men share in his frustration and happiness as the reports of a huge victory come in.

Assault troops for Operation King have been ordered to stand down. Until the Navy can deal with the mine fields and secure the waters surrounding the targets the men will wait.

The Flying Deuces continue their dull routine of flying CAPs watching convoys come and go as the build up on Wake continues at an increasingly rapid rate. They know something is up, but as usual the rumor mill churns out some of the most unbelievable stuff imaginable.

Combat

The SS Pollack, about 19 miles NE of Kendari, spotted a lone AK and made a surface attack. The freighter was hit by a shell from the deck gun and 3 fish. As the ship was sinking the sub was already diving as radar picked up an approaching plane.

A PBM spotted the CV Soryu and witnessed the carrier's demise.

Scattered reports of AKs, APs and ARs sinking due to previous actions are filtering in.

On Wake Island Stick's scheduled flight today was scratched due to a mechanical failure. He couldn't get the engine to catch so now he just lazes around until a mechanic storms into the mess hall screaming, “The Navy killed the Japanese fleet yesterday!” Everybody crowds around the man to get details that he says he doesn't have.

Class is interrupted as the instructor reads a message and then announces that, “Yesterday the Navy engaged in a great carrier battle with the Japanese. It appears that victory was ours, though enemy losses are not known with any certainty.” A cheer goes up in the classroom and it reverberates through the halls of the building as other classes react the same way to the news.

Word spreads like wildfire through the troops at Luganville of the Navy's victory yesterday. Slim says to Gunny, “Maybe they'll board us again now that the coast is clear.” Gunny just shrugs.

Bill knows that yesterday's battle will go a long way towards the ultimate goal of winning the war, but he has his exec remind the crew that their vigilance is still required and that the enemy, though wounded is far from dead.

FDR is having a wonderful day today as the reports of the huge victory in the Pacific continue to filter in. Everybody knows that yesterday was a combination of overpowering force and a very large dose of luck. In the evening he goes on national radio and tells the American public that a large naval battle was fought and won. “You can be proud because it is as much due to your efforts as those of our boys in uniform. From the steel worker to the plane designer to Rosy the Riveter, all of you who buy War Bonds, collect scrap metal or just conserve have helped to win this battle that leads us on to the ultimate victory which will be ours.” Later, after he has retired to the oval office a report is handed to him concerning a CVL and CL being torpedoed by submarines his smile disappears as he says, “We can only pray for the safety of our boys everywhere and strive for a fast victory in this awful conflict that we find ourselves.”

PM Curtain sends a cable to FDR commending the USN for it's great victory.

Dave turns off the radio and Sandy says, “I wonder if Bill was there and if he's OK.” Dave tries to be reassuring, but as long as there is no way of knowing for sure Sandy will continue to wonder.

Pete stares at the paper and mutters, “It was a bad day to be Japanese.”

Yesterday the Germans pulled back from Salerno as Americans and British linked forces.

I'm trying not to consider VPs in my strategy and tactics as I figure that in 1944 there will be time to take care of that in the year's second half. For right now I want to sink his ships and try to isolate his huge garrisons wherever possible. Obtaining bases to bomb Japan from are also a priority. Then we'll see about cutting of the SRA.

Combat

An air attack on Ichang was staged by the Chinese with 40 X B-25J and 40 X P-40N in attendance. They were engaged by 8 X Zeke, 6 X Tojo and 26 X Tony. 2 X Zeke were shot down (2 damaged), 2 X Tojo were destroyed (3 damaged), 4 X Tony went down (2 damaged) and 3X Helen along with 8 X Topsy were plastered on the ground. 3 of the bombers were downed (3 damaged) and 10 X P-40N died (3 damaged). The base sustained light damage.

Rangoon was raided by 99 X Liberator VI (11 damaged), 46 X B-24D (2 damaged) and 67 X P-38G. While the fighters milled around with nothing to do the bombers dealt a heavy blow to the air field, did moderate damage to the port and dished out moderate casualties among the troops. There were many secondary explosions reported.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF still holds it's ground and was tagged by 23 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N for moderate losses. No planes suffered for their efforts.

The BB Tennessee departed Amchikita Island, bound for Anchorage where additional repairs will be made while she awaits escorts to take her back to a US shipyard.

The AVG awaits a break in the weather for a crack at the Japanese in their new P-38Js.

One of the Flying Deuces' planes is under repair as a rather hard landing by one of the pilots damaged the undercarriage. The other pilots poke fun at the pilot and ask if he was trying to find a shortcut to China. Secretly they are happy that it wasn't them who had the mishap.

As the US fleet makes it's way towards Luganville to replenish and await further orders deliveries of more Hellcats awaits them. As far as the Navy fliers are concerned there can't be enough of these planes. The USN is happy to make good losses and upgrade another CV's squadron to them.

Bill is amazed that all the fighting done and not a single shot was fired by the surface ships. The DDs are busy hunting subs, but the cruisers and battleships have little to do except watch the show. A couple of days in port will do his crew good and he looks forward to mailing his stack of letters to Sandy and of course the prospect of mail from her awaiting him is something to look forward to.

Gunny is upset that there are still no orders and all they can do is laze around. The area is so crowded with troops that exercising the men is a challenge.

Nigel sent out his message last night, but couldn't wait for a confirmation of reception. He wanted to move the radio's location, but he can't do it alone. Tomorrow he plans on looping back to it's location and trying to get a message out again. In the meantime his hunger and thirst are his focus. A few hours after dark he hears a sound and tightens his grip on his rifle. He knows that the sound of gunfire would surely end up with him captured, but he knows what the Japanese are capable of and will not allow that to happen. Suddenly one of his helpers appears with a big grin on his face. The man has brought some food and water and as Nigel eats and drinks the man tells him that there are 2 less Japanese soldiers on the island as a patrol got strung out and he found the opportunity to tempting to resist. Nigel says, “As much as we feel like killing them it only makes them send out even more patrols to try and track us down. Try to let them go next time and when the Americans finally start their landings then you can kill as many of the buggers as you'd like.” The man smiles says OK and takes his leave.

Stalin orders a redeployment of troops in preparation for war with Japan.

FDR has decided, along with the top brass, that the taking of Eniwetok will be moved up and then the Solomon situation will be looked at again.

SWPAC casts it's eyes at all of the possible targets for it and complains to Washington that it can do nothing except sit on it's behind without shipping to carry troops and warships to protect them.

Ah, the Sho. Yes where indeed is she and what condition is she in? Time will tell all. As to momentum, that's a fickle thing that can change with one rotten day's activities and Steve is presenting me with a load of problems with this forward defense and my sudden lack of sweeping capabilities.

The SS Tautog, 11 miles SW of Thousand Ships Bay, managed to place 3 torpedoes into an AK despite a heavy escort. She then quietly slipped away as her victim succumbed to the sea.

The baptism of fire of the P-38J was a sweep of Tavoy and 2 X Rufe got in the way and 1 was destroyed.

Rangoon witnessed an attack by 52 X B-25J, of which the flak damaged 9. The oil refinery was moderately damaged.

The SS Sturgeon, 21 miles SW of Vella Lavella, was attacked by 5 X PG. The sub escaped without any damage.

A CA was reportedly observed to have sunk at Rabaul.

Reports of scattered sinkings, the spotting of debris and survivors in the water come in from the patrol planes. No effort is made to rescue these men as the prevailing attitude is since they're Japanese why bother.

Red relates what he knows to the crew as they eat some food. Cookie listens and remarks that it's about time the Japanese took it on the chin. In the meantime Lucky chews on a shank bone given to him and through the night you can hear the dog turning the bone and it's banging on the steel deck.

Nigel approaches his radio and hears some voices. He immediately recognizes that it's Japanese being spoken and he freezes. It appears that the Japanese have located his radio and are setting a trap in the hopes that he returns to it. There is another little problem for Nigel as he lays in the dense undergrowth, a patrol is approaching him and he's afraid to move. He ends up spending a long and uncomfortable night being eaten alive by insects and when the morning come to his dismay he can hear the Japanese eating breakfast. He thinks that with all of the noise that they're making the trap is a joke, except here he is caught in the middle of it.

The Flying Deuces continue with the same old routine. The boredom is awful and the men have taken to visiting with the Army troops to trade and shoot the breeze. The build up continues, but for what and where nobody knows.

British troops took Bari.

The Allies bombed Venice.

I'm guessing the Kinugasa. She greedily took more than her fair share of bombs during the great aerial give-away.

Even though the game gives away the name of the ship I have decided to follow a path where in most cases I'll just give the ship type as it gives a better feel of the confusion that reigns on the battlefield.

Rangoon was raided by 45 X B-25J and the flak claimed 1 and damaged 9 others while moderate damage was done to the oil facilities.

Lautem was swept by 43 X P-38G and 6 X Zeke, 3 X Oscar and 12 X Tojo gave battle. 3 X Zeke were shot down, 3 X Oscar were splashed and 5 X Tojo were destroyed while 3 X P-38G were downed and another was damaged.

Port Moresby was under a CAP of 6 X Jack and 16 X Tony when 103 X B-17E and 43 X B-24D arrived. The fighters attacked and 3 X Jack were destroyed (1 damaged) and 4 X Tony were shot down (9 damaged). The Americans suffered 15 X B-17E downed (21 damaged) and they also lost 4 X B-24D (6 damaged). Japanese ships in the harbor got tagged and the port itself had light damage.
AK 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
APD 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK 1 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP 1 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
The airbase suffered moderate damage and some secondary explosions were triggered by the attack. Ground troops had light losses.

Lunga was under an umbrella of 39 X Zeke, 16 X Jack, 12 X Tojo and 6 X Tony when the American bombers arrived. 42 X B-17E and 156 X B-24D were ruthlessly assaulted at the cost of 3 X Zeke downed (18 damaged), a Jack destroyed (5 damaged), 5 X Tojo shot down (3 damaged) and 4 X Tony were damaged. 4 X B-17E were downed (19 damaged) and 29 X B-24D were destroyed (41 damaged). Lunga sustained negligible damage and ground casualties were very light.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF stubbornly holds it's ground and got attacked by 21 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N who inflicted moderate casualties on the unit and then they all departed safely.

The CVL Independence and the CL Columbia made port at Luganville and repairs will be made to both before they can make their way to a shipyard.

A man approached Pete today and asked lots of questions. Some of them concerned the availability of rooms. When Pete told the man that he had no vacancies the man pressed him on when he would. Pete asked the man to excuse him so that he could consult his records to give an accurate answer. Instead he immediately contacted Mr. Doe who happened to be in the pub at the time. “Keep the gentleman waiting for about 10 minutes and then leave the rest to me,” he said and then added, “Pete, thanks a lot for this.” Pete returned about 7 minutes later. He excused himself for taking so long with the excuse of having to take a telephone call. Suddenly Mr. Doe appeared and gave Pete a nod and sat down looking at a newspaper. Pete explained to the man that he would have no vacancies for the foreseeable future. The man thanked him and left. 2 men out on the street started to follow the man. Back in the hotel Mr. Doe told Pete that there was the possibility of the man being a spy and that they would keep an eye on him. He again thanked Pete and then added that a man would be assigned to keep an eye on things at the hotel now as a security precaution.

Nigel wonders if his ordeal will ever end. He's been lying on his back, not moving, his body aching. He's hungry and thirsty but luckily it begins to rain. He lies there, mouth opened, catching what rain he can. The Japanese are still there in approximately squad strength. The others moved out a while ago and now he begins to plan his escape. A short time later a soldier decides to relieve himself and anoints Nigel with urine. At least he only hit my leg, Nigel thinks. The rain has continued and steadily increases in volume, becoming a deluge. Damned Yanks, will they ever come?

Two days ago the British Air Ministry said that the German city of Hamburg lies in absolute ruins.

Molotov insists on the resumption of the Arctic convoys.

3 X Rufe were patrolling the skies above Tavoy when suddenly out of the sun 24 X P-38J pounced on them. None of the Japanese pilots ever knew what hit them as they all went down in flames. The P-38Js returned to base as no other targets presented themselves.

Mandalay was attacked by 120 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24D and 26 X P-38G and the AA was light and inaccurate as only 1 B-24D was damaged. The base was heavily damaged, numerous secondary explosions were reported and ground losses were placed at moderate.

Lautem's CAP of 7 X Zeke and 6 X Tojo was jumped by 40 X P-38G on a fighter sweep. 2 X Zeke and 5 X Tojo were destroyed while 3 X P-38G went down and 2 others were damaged.

It was reported today that the IJN CV Shokaku went to her watery grave. The KB's loss of 4 of it's best carriers has given hope to Allied commanders that Operation King can get back on track if they can deal with the vast minefields.

Nigel tried to slip away and ran smack into another patrol. They missed seeing him by the slimmest of margins and he managed to find adequate cover to hide for the rest of the day. Now with darkness setting in he begins to flex his aching muscles. He stretches and slowly, extremely slowly begins to move. After a couple of hours he feels confident enough to resume traveling at a more normal speed. Suddenly he hears a noise off to his left and another to his right. He freezes and knows that the game is over. A smiling face bursts through the dense jungle growth and Nigel sighs when he recognizes the familiar face. They are soon joined by 2 others and Nigel happily consumes the food and water that they have given him. As soon as he's don the men lead him away and tell him that they know of a place that should be safe for him to hide in. They travel all night and at daybreak they settle down to hide until the daylight passes.

Sandy and Dave go to a friend's house to pay their respects as the family lost a son who was serving in the Army in Italy. People ask her about Bill and she tells them that mail is sporadic and that she has no idea where he is, as she fight back the tears.

The Palawan has gotten new orders and her captain is surprised by them. Palawan will sail back to Luganville, empty, and no departure date has been given. He will tell his crew when he knows when they'll be leaving. In the meantime Red has managed to arrange going out to dinner with Claire tonight. Cookie jokingly asks if he and Lucky can join them and Red, to his surprise answered yes. So it looks like it'll be dinner for 4.

Gunny is lying on his back just staring at the stars. He's thinking of the war and though he tries to push it out of his head, he can't. There's just to many unanswered questions.

The German BB Tirpitz was attacked and damaged by 6 British midget subs in Alten Fjord, Norway.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hit by 23 X B-25J and 7 X P-40N for very light casualties.

Jaluit's port was raided by 7 X PB4Y and flak damaged 4 of them while no bombs fell on target.

The CL Helena sailed with 2 CVs, a CVL, 2 CAs and 6 destroyers. Bill scans the ships, or at least those he can see and wonders where they are going. While in port the crew's mail was sent out and they got plenty of it, though he only got 4 letters from Sandy. He thinks of the logistical nightmare facing the United States in it's war against Japan and yet they still manage to move mail for the men fighting it.

Washington planners are having problems allocating manpower for the various operations that are active or in the planning stages. They argue that to much is being sent to Europe just to sit around in Great Britain.

Dinner yesterday was fun even though the food wasn't to good. While they were sitting there talking Red managed to slip his food to Lucky who was lying under the table. Having accomplished that Red was pleased with himself thinking that he wouldn't have to eat the awful stuff. When he looked at his plate it was full and Claire's and Cookie's were empty. They all shared in a good laugh and Lucky got more food when nobody in the eatery was looking.

Nigel has managed to have a fever. His helpers have decided that 1 of them will stay with him at all times until he recovers enough to move. This rotation will prove difficult to maintain as the Japanese activity in the area has increased since the radio was found. Food and water remain the most important items, but now they have to worry about keeping Nigel quiet too. His movements are very noisy by local standards and now they can only hope that he doesn't become delirious.

Pete and Sylvia took the day off and went for a walk in the park and then stopped at a shop for some tea and biscuits. The day has been wonderful and they are happy to have the time together away from the world's realities.

The Red Army took Poltava.

Mandalay was struck by 49 X B-25J and their escorts 15 X Corsair IV and 12 X Thunderbolt II (their first combat mission). @ bombers were damaged by AA as they pounded the base doing moderate damage and inflicting heavy losses on the troops there. As soon as they left a second strike appeared consisting of 24 X B-24D and 27 X P-38G. A lone bomber was damaged by light and inaccurate ground fire. The base was subjected to additional moderate damage while the ground troops had light casualties.

Andaman Island was swept by 24 X P-38J and AA brought 1 of them down and damaged 3 others while the strafing runs did no damage to anything of note.

Maloelap was raided by 39 X PB4Y (18 damaged) and the airbase had light damage as the men there had light losses.

Jaluit was visited by 41 X B-25J and the AA damaged 11 of them while they scored a hit on a supply dump at the port.

The BB Tennessee now sits at a pier at Anchorage where some repairs will be made before she sails for the US, probably the Bremerton Yard across the bay from Seattle.

Nigel's fever has gotten worse and he has had bouts with diarrhea. The natives do their best to care for him, but having Malaria and no Quinine or a steady supply of fresh water doesn't help. They decide that they must move to a new location and carry him on a makeshift litter that they've made. Progress is slow and the 3 men rotate between taking the lead and carrying Nigel. The threat of Japanese patrols is constant and they do their best to leave no signs of having passed this way.

Red stands on Palawan's bridge awaiting a response from Captain Demesa. “If you really think it's that important I'll make the request,” he says after a little thought. A new radio set is what Red is after and the necessary forms will be filed with the company and the Navy. Whichever responds first will be fine as far as Red is concerned. What he's afraid of is that the old set appears to be on it's last legs and he can only do so much to keep it working.

Elaine sits in her sister's bedroom telling her how she feels about Gil. “I miss him when I don't see him and I think about him lots,” she says. Her sister, though a couple of years younger, nods knowingly and tells Elaine that she's in love. This thought has crossed Elaine's mind before, but she tries to fight the feeling.

The Helena knifes through the swells, part of a TF that's out looking for trouble. Bill stops by the radar and watches the man at work. Satisfied that nothing is showing and having to leave the ASW to the DDs screening them he heads off for some food.

In Washington there is a growing debate concerning the Navy feeding invasion troops a traditional meal of steak, eggs, biscuits, fruit juice and coffee. The doctors are dead set against this and their rational is that men who are fed lightly have empty bellies. Patients with empty bellies are easier to treat than those with full stomachs. Even though some of the men find it difficult to eat at all prior to an invasion the men prefer the hearty meal. For now individual ship captains of the vessels carrying the men will continue to decide the fare offered on the fateful day of an invasion.

Mandalay was raided by 36 X B-25J, 1 of which was damaged, 11 X Corsair IV and 7 X Thunderbolt II. The base was lightly damaged and the troops had light losses.

Lunga, protected by 64 X Zeke, 17 X Jack, 14 X Tojo and 9 X Tony, was attacked by 168 X B-24D. The bombers never got to their target as the Japanese fighters drove them off destroying 28 and damaging another 50 planes. The bombers accounted for 4 X Zeke downed (24 damaged), 4 X Jack shot up, 2 X Tojo shot down (10 damaged) and a Tony was killed (7 damaged).

Jaluit was pounced on by 41 X B-25J and 47 X P-38G. AA fire accounted for a bomber and damaged 13 others. Not a single bomb found it's intended target.

Benham sails as as escort for some AKs bound for Luganville. Phil stands on the bridge with Frank and observes an Lt, JG handle the ship. The young officer does well as Phil and Frank nod approvingly. Phil gives a well done and leaves the bridge.

One of the men caring for Nigel ran into a Japanese patrol and after being questioned by them they let him go, telling him to go home and stay there. It was a close thing as he was only about 50 yards in the lead. The Japanese never had reason to suspect anything so they just idly sat around while the officer in charge of the patrol spoke to the native. Sometimes arrogance can be a tool of your undoing and with the Japanese in their dealings with the local population of Guadalcanal they are guilty in the extreme.

Tarpon continues her lonely patrol in the Solomons area. She has spotted nothing and the only activity is being alert at dawn and dusk when they're on the surface. They try to be submerged during the day due to the heavy air patrols here. CDR Wallace has no intention of being caught flat footed so even in the dark of night he orders the doubling of the lookouts figuring between the extra eyes and the radar their survivability will be greater, besides a hunter needs alertness to catch it's prey.

FDR consults with some Army generals and they are concerned about the lack of combat units to throw into the Alaska area. One of them states, “They Navy may be able to shift it's axis of attack quickly as ships are inherently mobile, but we just don't have the combat formations available to throw any power into the upcoming operation. The only thing we can do is to strip another area and then transfer the troops. This act in itself will take months to accomplish as the shipping must be assembled and then the transit time is long.” FDR nods and asks if new formations in the pipeline can be sent north instead of elsewhere. The same general answers, “Mr. President, that would mean weakening an already over stretched CENPAC. The only place with tremendous combat power that is static at this time is SWPAC. The distance is to great and SWPAC commanders won't relinquish their troops as they have plans to put into effect.” The meeting breaks up with FDR thanking them all and requesting a further study as to their options. The next meeting will include the Navy.

The Red Army took Smolensk and Roslavl.

Combat

The SS Nautilus, returning to base from a successful mine laying mission happens upon 3 X ML about 76 miles SW of Kagoshima. The unsuspecting vessels offer themselves up on a silver platter and the sub rewards 1 of them with a torpedo into it's bow.

The CVs continue to cruise and they make a rendezvous with a replenishment TF so the DDs can take on some fuel. Bill watches as the DDs move alongside the big AOs and remembers his first time doing that. He can't ever remember being so nervous since that day. The seas were running rough as he maneuvered the DD alongside the hulking AO that seemed to wallow through the swells. His skipper told him to go take a shower when they had finished taking on the fuel and had moved off as Bill was soaked with sweat.

Nigel's condition remains the same and his saviors are tiring from carrying him through the jungle. Progress is slow as taking trails is a hazard due to the Japanese patrols. They begin to appreciate when the Japanese appear so they can move off of the trails and into the jungle to rest while the Japanese move on. The men comment to one another about how much noise the troops make as they approach and how their smell reaches them before the soldiers do. When they reach a clearing they skirt it because to be caught in the open with Nigel would be a death sentence for all of them.

Dave is cranky as he's out of coffee again. “When will they end this damned war?” he mutters. Sandy reads another letter from Bill as she got 6 of them today.

Gil and Elaine manage to get together and take an early evening stroll in Schenley Park. They talk about the future and Gil says, “I don't know what the future holds for me as soon my training here will be over and then who knows what the Army has planned for me. The only thing certain is that I'll be going somewhere and that place will be a combat zone.” Elaine is very upset at this thought and begins to cry. Gil awkwardly tries to comfort her. After she clams down the go back to her home and the kiss goodnight.

The SS Seawolf, about 22 miles from Rabaul, greeted the day as the sun rose with a radar contact closing on them. They loitered on the surface long enough to realize that 5 ships were on an intersecting course. They dove the boat and to everybody's surprise a juicy TK and her escorts offered themselves up to a textbook attack. The unlucky TK was struck by 2 torpedoes that left her heavily damaged and ablaze while the Seawolf departed the area undetected.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 29 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N and suffered moderate losses while the Chinese planes all left unharmed.

Nigel's fever remains unchanged and the tiny group's progress has been at a snail's pace today due to Japanese activity in the area. Because of this they decide to stay put and 1 remains with Nigel while the others go in search of food and water. The jungle is death to the all here except the natives who live on what nature provides.

Benham is cruising around the Luganville area in search of Japanese subs. It seems strange, but they seem to have mysteriously disappeared lately. Phil wonders if the USN's ASW tactics and weapons have become to much for the Japanese to deal with. It doesn't matter what the reason is, just that something seems to be working. Still one must keep one's guard up at all times or the worst imaginable will be sure to happen.

Pete wonders what became of the strange man who asked so many questions not to long ago. He knows that asking Mr. Doe will be an exercise in futility so he just goes quietly about his business. Later in the afternoon his old doctor stops by the hotel and the 2 men share a beer and talk. Pete is surprised to this day that the Japanese pulled out of Australia with their tails between their legs and the doctor concurs. “Of course it saved many lives, on both sides,” he says.

The Pentagon can't find the troops needed to send to the Northern area. The Soviets continue to waffle about attacking the Japanese. One day Stalin is ready to pounce and the next he says that he can't because breaking the Germans must remain the focus of the Rodina. He does complain about not getting enough from the American and British though.

The Germans made a general withdrawal of all forces in the Ukraine to positions on the west bank of the Dnieper.

Combat

An IJN PG encountered a mine field at New Hanover Island.

The crew of the SS Tarpon is jubilant as they came across a lone ML while on patrol in “The Slot”, about 12 miles off of Russell Island and hit it with a fish that sank the vessel quickly.

The SS Pargo, 76 miles NE of Kagoshima, torpedoed a DD and the other 3 tin cans attacked her then. The DD was burning from the hit.

Ichang was being protected by 8 X Zeke, 6 X Tojo and 29 X Tony when a Chinese raid appeared made up of 45 X B-25J and and escort of 47 X P-40N. The Chinese fought their way through to the target and the Japanese losses were estimated to have been 2 X Zeke destroyed (1 damaged), 3 X Tojo downed, 3 X Tony shot down (4 damaged). In addition a Thora, 8 X Topsy, 1 X Dinah and 2 X Helen were trashed on the ground. The Chinese lost 3 bombers (4 damaged) and 21 fighters (3 damaged) in the attack which did light damage to the base and caused light casualties among the troops.

Mandalay was struck by 40 X B-24D and 28 X P-38G and the flak damaged a bomber while the base took moderate damage and troops had heavy losses.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was once more attacked. This time 18 X B-25J and 14 X P-40N caused very heavy casualties at no cost to themselves.

The Hopei Militia Div was raided by 8 Helens SW of Sining, neither side had losses.

40 X PB4Y struck Maloelap and AA fire damaged 8 of them as the airbase suffered light damage. There were many secondary explosions noted.

Jaluit was attacked by 37 Mitchells (7 damaged) and 45 X P-38G and the port was lightly damaged.

Benham's crew is suffering from lack of sleep as in the past 18 hours there have been 5 sonar contacts. Real or false the klaxon sends men tumbling from their bunks to their stations and then they remain there for hours. The galley has distributed sandwiches to the crew so that they can eat. Phil silently curses the need to keep the men in this state when it's obvious that they are so tired.

Still no word and the Palawan continues to rust away at Noumea. Red spent the day with Claire and then at night he goes over the inventory of radio parts that have arrived, no new set though.

Nigel remains the same and as long as they must travel it doesn't help his condition. They only spotted 2 Japanese patrols today so their progress was good. In another couple of days they'll reach their destination and then food, water and rest will be welcomed.

Gil expects his orders shortly and he's desperate to see Elaine. Who knows where the Air Corps will be sending him. Rumors abound in the Pitt Tower, but he tries to pay no attention to them. Somebody has been teasing him that he'll be sent to Alaska and the Army will forget he's there until 1950. Another one of the guys says that the war will go on until at least 1953 and he has it on a good source.

The USN's CVs continue to prowl looking for targets in the Solomon area, but none appear. Bill's concern is that there's nothing but routine duties for his ship. If he were on the O'Bannon at least they would be vigilantly looking for subs.

Combat

The SS Finback, about 20 miles SE of Buka, tried and failed to attack a ML.

The SS Tullibee, 77 miles NE of Marcus Island, was attacked by 2 X ML that she was closing on. She managed to dive under the feeble attack made on her.

The SS Seawolf, 12 miles off of Kavieng, was attacked by 5 X PG, but she dove under the exploding depth charges and escaped harm. The Japanese ships found her again hours later and again failed in their attack. A couple of hours later 2 X PC and 2 X MSW appeared and attacked the sub. She has suffered some minor systems damage and combined with her fuel state her skipper decides to return to the barn.

Mandalay was raided by 45 X B-25J and 9 X Thunderbolt II. The AA was light, but accurate and 3 of the bombers were damaged while the base sustained light damage and troops had light casualties.

Maloelap was visited by 42 X B-24J, of which 2 were destroyed and 15 got damaged by the heavy and accurate flak. The airfield was moderately damaged and casualties were placed at very light.

A large fleet of CVs and CVLs are heading towards PNG to strike at Port Moresby and Gili Gili prior to returning to the Solomons area. If all goes well Japanese air will be depleted and some shipping will be bagged.

Bill is pleased to be headed off into a new area of operations. He doesn't know the whys and wherefores, but he thinks that the Solomons have gone stale and new hunting grounds that the Japanese might think are safe would make nice targets. One of these days he hopes his ships gets detached from it's TG and is unleashed for a bombardment or even a surface engagement.

Sylvia returns home from the hospital and tells Pete that she visited with a doctor who pronounced her and the baby healthy. He is, of course, pleased with this news and suggests that they take a little time off to share the news with her parents.

Sandy got a few more letters from Bill today. They tell of missing her, but not where or what he's doing. She sits down and writes to him telling him of life on the home front and how she longs to see him again.

Nigel remains in a poor state, but his men believe that with some luck they will arrive at their destination before dark. There have been no Japanese patrols today and they discuss this and think it strange.

The Flying Deuces continue to fly their boring CAPs over Wake Island. They watch the convoys steam in and out of the port facilities and wonder why the Japanese haven't tried to interfere with the large buildup of men and material. Many of the ships that come are staying and that night it's the main topic of discussion. The usual rumor mill has many reasons for what's going on. Stick tells his fellow pilots that one of their mechanics got it from a See Bee, who heard it from a staff clerk that Wake is the staging are for the invasion of some islands off the Japanese coast. This will enable fighters to cover the invasion of Japan itself. The men look at Stick, around the room and then break into hopeful chatter about flying where there would be combat.

Combat

The SS Growler, about 79 miles NE of Aomori, discovered that she was in the path of 4 X DD. Instead of running she silently maintained a favorable attack position. Just before the Japanese ships offered themselves up on the proverbial silver platter they zigged when it was expected that they would zag. Growler quietly continued on her way in search of other game. The DDs later detected and attacked the sub, doing little damage except the usual frayed nerves of the crew. There are a few minor leaks that are being attended to, but if all goes well she'll remain on patrol.

The SS Gato, 81 miles NE of Balikpapan, managed an attack on an AK and succeeded in hitting it with a torpedo. The ship immediately caught fire and the sub took evasive precautions as the PGs and PCs that were escorting it started their frantic searches.

Mandalay was targeted by 58 X B-25J and 9 X Thunderbolt II. The flak was moderate and fairly accurate as 1 bomber met it's doom and 2 others were damaged. The base took moderate damage and the troops had heavy losses. An hour later it was the turn of the heavies as 44 X B-24D and 29 X P-38G pounded the base. 3 bombers sustained damage and the airbase had additional moderate damage and the troops more heavy casualties.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF stubbornly continues to maintain it's position at the river crossing and once again it is targeted by the Chinese planes. 21 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N inflicted light losses and then safely departed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, not to far from Sining, was attacked by 15 X Helen and the unit had very light losses. No Japanese planes were damaged as rifle fire is highly inaccurate and even with a stray hit will do no damage.

Maloelap was raided by 33 X PB4Y and the AA fire damaged 3 of them while the air strip had light damage and a Dinah was destroyed in it's revetment.

Bill watches as more planes roar overhead. The fleet continues to skirt the Gili Gili area in hopes that even if the Japanese detect them the course heading appears that they are moving towards Australia. Soon they will change course and make for Port Moresby in hopes of damaging the facilities, air power and catching the ships there. After that, if all goes well Gili Gili will be on the plate and then it's back to Luganville where the troops will be readying for the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi.

Sylvia's parents were very happy with the news and of course Milt suggested a small celebration to be held at the pub which ended up with him sleeping it off on the cot in the hotel's office.

The excitement begins to run high as they are within an hour of reaching their destination. Nigel is still feverish, but at least not delirious and the men hope that food and water will help him. Suddenly they hear a sound behind them and then another off to their right. They silently stare into the jungle when off to the left they hear the unmistakeable sound of the bolt being thrown on a rifle. Two of the men hurry off in the one direction where there has been no noise from in the hope of drawing the Japanese away from Nigel and the man that remains with him. A sudden burst of gunfire erupts and the 2 men are thrown off their feet, dead. The Japanese soldiers then approach the other man who has moved away from Nigel. He is questioned by the Japanese officer leading the patrol that laid the ambush as to the whereabouts of Nigel. The man shrugs and says that he knows nothing of such a man. His reward is a bullet that drops him like a stone. After a few minutes of searching Nigel is in the hands of the Japanese. As far as the Japanese are concerned the only good coast watcher is a dead one and mercifully Nigel never even knew what was coming.

The Red Army made a Dnieper crossing on a 300 mile front.

The Gestapo and Danish Nazis began the roundup of Danish Jews. The Danish resistance and fishermen save many and ferry them to Sweden.

FDR's friend, Sumner Welles, suddenly resigned as Undersecretary of State. The official reason given was policy differences with Secretary of State Cordell Hull over relations with pro-Axis governments in Latin America. The real reason was the threat by former ambassador William Bullitt, who wanted Wells' and Hull's jobs, to expose Welles homosexuality. FDR never forgave Bullitt and refused him permission to enlist in the Army. Bullitt joined the Free French under de Galle.

Combat

Japanese MSWs located and started sweeping a mine field at New Hanover Island.

24 X P-38J swept Hanoi and ran into 3 X Tony, of which 2 were splashed and the other ran. All of the Lightnings departed intact.

Mandalay was bombed by 43 X B-25J and their escorts, 11 X Corsair IV and 9 X Thunderbolt II, had nothing to do except to watch the show. The base was moderately damaged and troops sustained moderate losses. 117 X Liberator VI arrived an hour later accompanied by 42 X B-24D. This time around the base was plastered for very heavy damage and very heavy casualties among the troops.

Lautem had a CAP of 8 X Zeke and 20 X Jack aloft when 54 X P-38G swept in on them. 6 X Zeke and 11 X Jack went down while 5 X P-38G were destroyed and 2 others were damaged.

110 X B-17E and 48 X B-24D attacked Port Moresby and 6 X Jack, 3 X Tojo and 21 X Tony went to work on them. 3 X Jack were damaged, a Tojo went down (1 damaged), 9 X Tony were destroyed (4 damaged) and a Zero was killed on the ground while
an F-5A was destroyed as it was snooping while 13 X B-17E went down (29 damaged) and 8 X B-24D were shot down (10 damaged). The base took moderate damage and casualties were heavy.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was visited by 18 X B-25J and 13 X P-40N and the unit had heavy losses. No planes were damaged in the raid.

Jaluit was bombed by 36 X B-25J and 47 X P-38G. 4 of the bombers were hit by flak and the port suffered light damage.

The rumors continue to fly, but Stick has learned to ignore them as none ever come true. “I tell you we're going to Eniwetok just as soon as the Japs get kicked out,” says the pilot. Stick laughs and wonders when this will happen. He climbs into a jeep that takes him and the other 3 pilots out to the flight line as it's their turn for CAP duty.

Word has filtered down to the troops that they are to standby as orders are in the offing. Gunny laughs and says, “Where have I ever heard this before?” The men of the platoon share the laugh, though nobody is in a hurry to get back onto the cramped and smelly ships.

A new radio set arrived today and Red watched as the 2 men installed and tested it. They also brought along spare parts “because you never know,” one of them said. After they leave Red fools around with it and then tunes into today's Tokyo Rose broadcast. He pipes it over the intercom system that he and a few of the men rigged with parts that Red had on his list. The crew enjoys the music and like many other men laugh at the news supplied.

The USN fleet draws ever closer to PM and mechanics work feverishly making sure that all of the planes are ready to fly at a moment's notice.

Bill's exec asks for a moment to talk to him and Bill invites him into his cabin. In private the 2 of them don't stand on ceremony so Bill tells him to grab a seat and out with it. “I was thinking that with so much time being spent responding to threats and drills that the crew could use some diversion. The World Series starts on the 5th between the Yankees and the Cardinals and we could pipe the Armed Forces Radio coverage of the games to the men, conditions permitting.”

“I like it. Make it happen,” says Bill.

The Allies took Naples today.

A night air attack on Akyab was made by 24 X Nick, of which 4 were destroyed and 9 others damaged by flak. No damage was sustained by the base.

Mandalay was visited by 47 X B-25J, 10 X Corsair IV and 10 X Thunderbolt II and AA damaged 2 of the bombers while the base was hit for moderately heavy damage and troops had light losses.

Koepang was raided by 22 X B-24J and the ground fire claimed 1 of them and damaged 3 others. The airfield was lightly damaged, 5 X Sally were destroyed and ground personnel had light casualties.

Tulagi was covered by a LRCAP of 17 X Zeke, 7 X Jack and 7 X Tony when 186 X B-24D filled the skies. The Japanese fighters bravely engaged and the defensive fire from the bombers was heavy and accurate. 7 X Zeke were destroyed (3 damaged), 5 X Jack were damaged and 4 X Tony were damaged while 25 of the bombers went down and 31 more suffered damage. The port was moderately damaged and the troops there had negligible losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, SW of Sining, was bombed by 11 X Helen and had very light losses.

Bill orders the course change as the fleet changes the direction that it's been traveling. In a couple of days they will be in range of their target, but for now they must keep up the appearance of traveling to Australia before the final course correction.

The RAF hit Munich with a raid that lasted 25 minutes.

Combat

The SS Haddo, 72 miles E of Aomori, was attacked and roughed up by 4 DDs. She will now make her way back to Pearl for repairs as her systems took moderate damage.

Mandalay was bombed by 115 X Liberator VI, 39 X B-24D and 32 X P-38G. The flak was light and inaccurate and all planes departed safely after obliterating the base and inflicting very heavy losses on the troops there.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF got it's dose of bombs delivered by 21 Mitchells and 9 Warhawks. The unit had moderate casualties and all the planes were unharmed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, NW of Sining, was attacked by 15 X Helen who caused light casualties.

Jaluit was raided by 42 X B-25J and 45 X P-38G and the AA was heavy and accurate as 2 bombers were destroyed and 10 others were damaged. The port was moderately damaged.

It is expected that the planned attacks on Port Moresby will take place tomorrow, weather permitting.

Bill looks over the shoulder of the radar operator and the man points out the snooper on the scope. “See sir, this is a Jap plane.” Bill thanks the man and tells him to keep up the good work. So we've been spotted, he thinks to himself. That should make it tougher on the fly boys tomorrow and maybe we'll be attacked. Bill tells the exec to see that at dawn the ship's company is ready, just in case. He then retires and writes a letter to Sandy telling her that he misses their walks in the mountains and of course her too.

Gil and Elaine spent the day with some friends of hers on the river in a boat that one of them owns. Later the 2 of them manage to take a walk together and then it's time for the boat ride back. Gil wonders where the gasoline for the boat came from, but doesn't ask because he's sure that it's black market. While heading back one of the girls takes Elaine's picture and Gil tells the girl that he'd like a copy of that one. That evening he has dinner with Elaine, her parents and sister. The talk is of the war in spite of the women not wanting to discuss it.

Claire and Red took an afternoon walk with Lucky and they walked her home. On the way back to the ship Red ran into Cookie and a couple of men from the Palawan and they hit a bar.

Ed sits quietly in a briefing at SOPAC HQs listening to the BS being slung by yet another staffer who doesn't have a clue as to what it's like outside of his office. The plan is to load the ships and hit the Solomons after the carriers conduct their raiding on Port Moresby and Gili Gili. After the meeting breaks up Ed tells his staff to break out their bombardment plans so that they can go over them this evening after dinner.

Combat

Port Moresby's day started out calm enough, but then 65 X F6F roared in and pounced on the CAP made up of 16 X Zeke, 3 X Jack, 4 X Tojo and 28 X Tony. The mayhem that ensued saw 5 X Zeke go down, all of the Jacks were destroyed, the same went for the Tojos and 23 X Tony were shot down. The USN planes lost 11 fighters and another was damaged. The Japanese scrambled 5 X Tony just in time to engage 100 X B-17E and 47 X B-24D, but nothing could stop the big bombers from doing their work. The Tonys were splashed and another 3 were trashed on the ground as were 2 X Jack, 3 X Dinah, 3 X Tojo, 6 X Zeke and a Zero. The air field took very heavy damage and many secondary explosions were reported while troops sustained heavy casualties. This was at the cost of 8 X B-17E and 6 X B-24D being damaged. Before the smoke and dust cleared 198 X SBD, 78 X TBF, 54 X TBM, 13 X F4F-4 and 28 X F6F arrived to add their ordinance. 4 X Dinah, a Tojo, 11 X Tony, 9 X Zeke, 3 X Zero and a Jack were destroyed on the ground as the air field was once again punished heavily. The port took moderate damage and an APD, an AP and an AK took multiple bomb hits and were reportedly heavily damaged and burning. This cost the USN a downed SBD (10 damaged), 7 X TBF damaged and 5 X TBM damaged. The Japanese now know where the USN's CVs were going.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was again pounded by 18 X B-25J for light losses.

Bill was amazed that the day passed and the Japanese never launched a strike on the American fleet. He doesn't know about the heavy bombers attacking the airfield at Port Moresby and that the 2 raids combined not only crippled the Japanese air power there, but it also shut down the base. The crew remain at their battle stations for the remainder of the day as the fleet will remain in harm's way for at least another day.

Red and Cookie sit on a hatch cover looking at the night sky as they discuss their disrupted business plans. They decide not concentrate all of their efforts in the Hawaiian Islands, Maui, in particular. Anything else that presents itself will be considered of course, but for now there's not much they can do sitting in Noumea. They also decide to go to the shipping company's office tomorrow and send a message to their lawyer in Honolulu expressing their wishes. The talk then turns to Claire and Cookie asks, “Do you really like this girl?” Red, without looking at Cookie, just nods.

The British have decided that now is the time to launch an offensive aimed at retaking Burma. The Chinese are also expected to throw troops into the fray there, giving the Japanese 2 areas to defend instead of 1. In the meantime the Chinese are also expected to make an attack of their own in China, but they refuse to reveal their plans citing operational security concerns.

Stalin expresses his concerns about the lack of supplies reaching his troops facing the Japanese and poses the question to Washington of how can he launch an attack when stocks are so low? Churchill and FDR can't complain because the Soviets are roughly handling the Germans and with the invasion of Europe growing ever closer that becomes more important all of the time. FDR has a response framed for the Kremlin stating that they will do what they can, but due to operations already underway forcing a supply convoy into a Soviet port under the very noses of the Japanese would be a foolhardy thing to attempt.

At Posen, Himmler openly talked about the Final Solution.

Combat

Today the USN's target was Gili Gili and the Japanese were waiting. A CAP of 30 X Zeke, 19 X Jack, 6 X Tojo and 10 X Tony were aloft when 66 X Hellcat came in on a sweep. The fighting was savage and the Japanese lost 17 X Zeke, 11 X Jack, 6 X Tojo and 9 X Tony while the American had 15 X F6F destroyed and 5 other damaged. The main attack of 193 X SBD, 76 X TBF, 71 X TBM, 40 X F4F-4 and 41 X F6F arrived and was met by 30 X Zeke, 23 X Jack, 6 X Tojo and 12 X Tony. There was more bitter combat in the skies over Gili Gili and 28 X Zeke, 18 X Jack, 7 X Tojo, 9 X Tony and an Emily were destroyed in the air and on the ground. The airfield was moderately damaged, as was the port while troops had heavy losses. Many secondary explosions were reported. The USN sustained 13 X SBD downed (20 damaged), 6 X TBF destroyed (10 damaged), 5 X TBM splashed (9 damaged), 19 X F4F-4 lost and 19 X F6F shot down.

The Hopei Militia Division, NW of Sining, was bombed by 11 X Helen and sustained very light casualties.

While the air battles were being fought the crew of the Helena was being treated to the opportunity to listen to the first World Series game between the St Louis Cardinal and the New York Yankees. The game was held in the Bronx and the Yankees won 4-2 behind the pitching of Spud Chandler. Max Lanier took the loss for the Cards. The crew were at their stations ready for anything, but having the game to listen to helped ease their nerves. Bill has already approved doing the same for the rest of the games, conditions permitting.

Still no sailing orders for the Palawan as it appears that the area has become a backwater for the time being. Red and Lucky spent the day ashore for a long walk. It seems strange to Red without so many troops in the Noumea area.

The Chinese troops have orders to move, but that is not a given since local commanders sometimes decide to stay put and other times the troops don't seem to be impressed by orders at all.

The campaign in the Northern Area is in doubt as the Russians have forces in place, but suffer from a chronic supply problem. Stalin considers making a demand of the Japanese to allow Lend Lease through to his forces, or else.

Combat

Gili Gili was caught napping by 39 X B-17E, but the AA was heavy and accurate and it accounted for 13 damaged bombers. The airfield was tagged for light damage and ground losses were very light while an Emily was left burning.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 20 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N who dished out heavy casualties to the unit at no cost to themselves.

The Hopei Militia Division, SW of Sining, was visited by 8 X Helen and had very light losses.

The American fleet is making for Luganville, where it will replenish and then return to the Solomons before the invasion.

Bill here's that there's a pool and if the player you pick hits a homer then you win the pool for that game. Yesterday a cook won as Joe Gordon belted a 4 bagger for the Yankees. Today the winnings will be shared out as the Cardinals evened the series by beating the Yanks 4-3. Marty Marion and Ray Sanders homered for the Cards and Mort Cooper got the win and Tiny Bonham took the loss. The men appreciate being able to listen to the Series as it make the time at battle stations more tolerable. Bill later writes a letter to Sandy telling her how much he misses her. He doesn't mention that though he loves commanding the CL Helena he finds it lonely duty. Life aboard the O'Bannon was different he thinks and then he wonders how Phil and Frank are getting on.

For the past 2 days there have been disappearances of a Japanese soldier per day. Unit commanders don't know what to make of this, but orders are issued that nobody should venture off alone, only in squad sized units or larger. What they don't know is that a couple of the locals are paying them back for the recent killings of a few of the local men.

Still on standby the Marines of Gunny's platoon are less than happy. “Why don't they decide something already?” one of the men complains. Gunny knows the man is right, but there's nothing they can do except to wait.

Stick watches the planes landing and winces as one of them noses over, coming to an abrupt halt. He rushes onto the field to lend a hand and is relieved to see that the man is OK, just shaken up a bit. Inwardly Stick is happy that this mishap happened to the squadron commander. Nobody in in for a chewing out and later the pilots are happy to make joking comments at the mess tent. Their commander takes it all in stride and finally says, “So now you clowns know that I'm human.”

2 Russian Armies took Nevel today.

The US 5th Army took Capu and Caserta.

Combat

The SS Blackfish, 19 miles from Rabaul, tried and failed to attack 5 X PG who were hunting subs.

The SS Tautog, 31 miles SW of Green Island, had more luck and nailed a ML with 2 torpedoes. A short time later she caught another ML with 3 fish. Both vessels sank immediately.

Myitkyina was raided by 123 X Liberator VI and 26 X P-38G. The flak was light and inaccurate as 5 bombers were damaged. The base was pounded for moderately heavy damage, light casualties and numerous secondary explosions.

Gili Gili was bombed by 35 X B-17E, of which 9 were damaged by AA. The airfield took light damage and the troops had very light losses.

Lunga was under a CAP of 15 X Zero, 18 X Zeke, 23 X Jack, a Tojo and 4 X Tony when 183 X B-24D arrived. The defensive fire of the bombers took a toll on the Japanese fighters as 6 X Zero were damaged, a Zeke went down (12 damaged), 3 X Jack were destroyed (17 damaged), a Tojo went down in flames and 4 X Tony were damaged. The bombers lost 25 of their number and 43 more were damaged while a snooping PBM went down and another was damaged. Not a single bomb hit the target.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was once more bombed by 25 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N. The unit had moderate casualties and all of the Chinese planes departed safely.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still trying to depart the area near Sining, was hit by 8 X Helen for very light losses.

Andaman Island was swept by 21 X P-38J, of which 3 were damaged by flak. There was no opposition in the air for the fighters to tangle with and their strafing of the base did no real damage.

The men on the Helena are happy to be able to relax as they've moved out of the area that required them to eat and sleep at their stations. The third game of the World Series has just ended with the Yankees winning 6-2. Hank Borowy got the win and Johnny Murphy got a save as Al Brazale took the loss. No homers were hit so that pool will grow. The teams will now travel to St Louis leading some of the men to announce that the fortunes of the Cards will turn around at home. The men need something to entertain them as always being on edge reduces efficiency.

Gil has his new orders in hand. His last day of classes are on the 8th. He will then have a weekend pass and on Monday the 11th he will report to the train station at 0900. He has no idea why, but he's heading off to Nebraska. When he questions where in Nebraska a quick answer comes, “You'll know when you get there.” Gil decides that he's got to get in touch with Elaine and when he does she invites him to spend the weekend at the house.

Dave took today off and joined Sandy for a hike. He brought along his rifle, “Just in case,” he said when she asked why. On the way back he spotted a medium sized buck and with a crack from the rifle it became destined to be dinner and some other meals too. Dave struggles to get it out of the woods and mutters that it would've been better if they were a bit closer to home when he shot it. “To bad Bill isn't here to help me,” he puffs and she smiles and nods.

The US 5th Army was stopped by the Germans at the Volturno River.
