I can not redownload a game that I have already bought.

I get to a link for the download,...but when I click on it it gives me a message from Plimus telling me its outdated and to contact the game manufacturer. Of course this s not the first time this has happened to me,...and many others.

I'm sick of it.

-----I had decided in the spur of the moment to boycott buying games here until the policy is changed,...but naturally thats not true. I will just whine some and ask why Matrix cant get a company to host their downloads that doesnt deactivate them after a set time. I buy games from other sites that allow you to redownload anytime you wish, without having to contact support,....and I wonder why Matrix cant find someone to do the same. Of course I suspect the answer is one that really drives all decisions in the end,....money.

EDIT- and before it is mentioned,...yes I back up everything on disk. One disk developed a crack and isnt working and I am making a replacement for it.

Have you opened up a Help desk ticket - they'll get you up and running ASAP.

The helpdesk route worked for me.  But it was still a hassle.  Findmyorder under Digital River was faster and more reliable.

I think what would be the best solution is to put a permanent download link the member's profile page... not just serial numbers.

I know it's there because my GG World at War download link is permently in that page.  But all other games, Plimus or Digital River, should be there in the list as well.

I'm guilty of not doing this myself but I suggest everyone makes a back up once download. All PC's have CD or DVD writers. And CD's aren't expensive. However like I said I don't do it often myself.

But when we have Steam where you can donwload whenever you want it makes this rather old fashioned and rather draconian way rather annoying. Rather...a word I seemed to have used alot in this post...rather.

I don't get it.

1) When Steam goes belly-up - what do you do then ?
2) You need to make backups of what's on your harddrive anyway - so what's the big deal of adding those installation files to the process ?
3) Forget cd's and dvd's - they're simply unreliable. My backup system is this : 2 external harddrives - terrabyte size - monthly backup on 1, quarterly backup on both. That way if one of the external harddrives kicks the bucket, you're still covered. Most external harddrives even come with a "1 button backup" on it or "easy backup" sofware so I can't see what's so incredibly hard about making proper backups. Haven't lost a byte of data in 30 years.

Erm..well if Matrix go belly up same thing will apply if your relying on downloads no?

What I'm saying is with Steam you can download as often as you want and years after release if you wnat to. Here you get what a year before you can't redownload.

If Steam goes belly up I wont really be crying as it's more than likely the games I have with them I wouldn't really miss.

Also I really do believe if that was the case they would have plenty of warning and let everyone download there games and play them.

Or your jusitified to go to a torrent site and get them from there.

I havent opened a support ticket yet. I will sometime today.

Yeah I had it on a disk, but that disk decided it was a cheap piece of crap and developed a crack, so it doesnt work at all now.

My link for the game is still there,.......like your GGWaW link,...but when I click on it it says its been too long or I have used it too many times and I need to contact the manufacturers support.

Its Panzer Corp,...so I have only downloaded it once,...and it really hasnt been that long since the game was released,...so its kind of annoying to have to deal with this so soon after release.

Who says anything about relying on downloads ?

My whole point is : do not rely on downloads, make your own backup. It's easy, it's cheap, a monkey could do it.

People who rely on *other* people to make backups for them - which in essence a "re-download at will" scheme is - will deserve everything they'll get.

I love how Steam just has a list of your purchased games where you can redownload. Very easy. I have copies of my Matrix games burnt to disk but it would be nice to just have a link to download again.

Eddy,...self reliance seems to be a dissappearing fad. There are those that would rather we depend on them than being able to depend on ourselves........much more profit in it. I used to be able to repair my own car.............

Not really a good analogy - cars today having a more computing power than the Apollo 11 moon mission (no kidding) so half the problems cars experience today simply cannot be detected nor repaired without expensive manufacturer specific custom equipment to perform read-outs of the internal diagnostic tools of the onboard computers. In other words : in most cases forget about repairing your own car, you simply cannot do it. Backups otoh have become both cheaper and simpler in the last decade so there’s no excuse today for not doing it. Last time I checked a 2-Terrabyte external harddisk was under $100 - that's not a lot of money to saveguard the family pictures, important documents and, of course, your game collection.

I wasnt really talking about the backup issue so much as the general trend of things today.

The sad fact is that everything fails eventually. Even that 2 terrabyte external harddisk will eventually stop working,...and you will be right back in the same boat.

I still save everything to disk,....its better to have it on disk AND available for download.

I still can't afford an external hard disk. So, I simply copy stuff to multiple DVDs and a few USB sticks that I got for free in various promotions.
I have never lost a game either.

No, I won't.

Got 2 of them - if one fails, there's still the other.

Over the years I've slowly upgraded from tapes, over 8 inch floppies, to 3.5 inch, to cd to dvd and I fully expect some solid state solution in the future.

Takes me all of 3 minutes to retrieve an installation file of a game ... or that picture from 2001.

I have to say I've recently come across another situation when being able to download would've been nice - posted here about it.

I was on holiday in Holland and thought I had WitE installed on my laptop. Turned out I didn't. My fault I know...but if it was a game I had bought off Steam I could've downloaded it right away...as it was I had to open a support ticket - and it was the weekend. I eventually got the game downloaded but I think it was at least a day (maybe 2) gone.

No amount of terrabyte drives would've helped me then. And like I said, my own fault for not checking - it would just have been a "nice to have" feature so I could game right away - I was caught short and it would've been nice to have a system whereby I didn't have to rely on support - just re-download.

Just sayin

Good News: I got a reply
Bad News: they told me to use the same link I have already tried using,....and its still gives the same response.

Looking at the page where the link is .....in "My orders",... it says any game bought after Nov 2010 should be available to download using the links provided and I have 2 games I have bought since then,...both have links,.....but the links only give the message that it is too old, contact support etc.

So,...more hoops to be jumped through.............and further proof that this system SUCKS!

EDIT- As soon as I finshed posting I checked again and the download link is working. I guess it just took a few minutes.
I still wish we didnt have to go through this to redownload our games.

Good thing you have two games in that page.  I only have one.  My other more recent purchases are not there.

Well, if your baseline is Scottish food, like haggis, I guess Dutch food is ok too - and just as cheap

Seriously : like with every country it depends on where exactly you go - Rotterdam is a nightmare, A'Dam is excellent, Utrecht and Breda are fine, Tilburg can kiss my lower behind (long story) and Maastricht is still my #1 Dutch city.

Problem about Matrix is, that they always rely on 3rd-party-providers for distribution. Unlike other indie publishers, who host stuff on own servers. For some reason the web presence obviously isn't their main concern. I mean, who would deliberately use asp.net sh*t.

They should mount a decent backend with ftp server and appropriate band-with in the near future. So we can always redownload our games. If a small company as GoG is able to offer this service, Matrix should be as well.

GoG isn't a small company. It's a part of one of the biggest Polish game publishers - CD-Projekt. It's a company with 17 years of tradition - they published Interplay games here and made localizations for them using top Polish actors.
