I just tried running my AE game and it crashes after the initial loading game screen. it gives me a runtime C++ error. Anyone know how to get rid of these? I did not do any uploads or any updates. It just started doing this now. Game ran fine last night.

Screenshot attached.

Appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks.!

For people to help you have to post the version of the game you are using, and the version of Windows you are using.

OK, I am not running W7 or Vista, but many people who are have noted that there is a small trick when you install the game. You must NOT install it in the default folder (C:\Program Files\Matrix...). Instead, create it's own area such as (C:\Matrix...) or (C:\Games\Matrix...).

I've seen it posted so many times in response to questions that it is definitely the first thing to try.

Has the PC had the month Window patches applied lately? Between when it worked and then didn't.

On a hunch, try renaming your Sounds folder to noSound.

Sounds like a similar problem which was discussed over at WiTE

Luckily, michaelm also also assisted over there.

This is only true for the 64-bit version. If you are running 64-bit, the default location of (C:\Program Files (x86)\...) works just fine.

I ran AE again just to see if there was anything new today. This time, windows gave me the option to search online. I noticed the bottom left had a "problem info" drop box. Here is the info from it. Don't understand most of it but I am hoping that one of you may. Many thanks for reading this and trying to solve my problem. My 3 PBEM games are on hold at the moment.

Michaelm,
No luck. Renamed the folder to noSound. Didn't work. Still the same error.

Last thing would be to try renaming the Video folder to noVideo.

If that fails, the only other thing I can come up with is to try re-installing. (rename your original installation folder so you don't lose any of your saves or scenario files.)

Michaelm,

Renamed to noVideo. No luck either. I reinstalled it again, no luck.

I tried the old WITP and that also now has the same problem. There must be something common in both programs to cause the error.

I also tried reinstalling WIndows 7, with no updates, still same problem.

Appreciate any other ideas you may have.

A couple of questions.

1. Specifically how are you installing any of the Matrix brand games into your computer? Are you trying to install it into a USB Hard Drive? I ran into the same issue after attempting to directly reload my game onto a new computer from my back up drive or tried to use the USB drive as a way to play the game no matter what computer I was at. However that disassoicated the game from the register and caused all sorts of teeth gnashing, even worst is if you have the game installed into a USB drive and you don't plug it into the same USB port everytime to identify it as Drive "D" (or whatever drive you have the game installed on) then you will have problems which might require a register fix to correct since there is bad data there and not all uninstall programs are effective at cleaning up the registery well and leave all sorts of bad data in there. Even worst when you start having issues like this since then even if you install new, WIN7 in its wisdom will still assoicate with the older register marks and cause it to be corrupted

2. Have you verified that all of your drivers for everything else is up to date? Another time I was getting a C++ runtime way back in Uncommon Valour days when I installed a bad update for my graphics driver, which was causing an issue between the the windows server process and an active process from the graphics manufacturer that gave me the ability to tweak the graphics card. In the end I had to revert back a update on my driver for a while

3. You mention that you have tried to do a new WIN7 install, was that a full clean install? If so before you started to apply any patches/updates to either WITPAE or WIN7 did you check to see if the game ran correctly? I would recommend you try this to start with since it might also relate to number 2 if your all out of ideas. Then install one update at a time, once that one update is installed; go and run the game. That will help you narrow down if a recent update has trashed your system.

Yankee,

Games are all installed to the hard drive. It has now spread to my 2nd (older) laptop. It is installed on my SSD (D Drive) Game harddisk on my primary machine. My older machine it is on the C drive - small 64GB HD.

Drivers are up to date on both machines. What I have started to do is to uninstall windows updates one at a time - try to play to game, then reboot and try again. So far, removed 10 updates, no luck.

I tried to run the game from the original version on the disk. no luck. Tried to do the patch anyway in hopes that maybe an updated version would work - no luck either.

I'll continue to remove all updates on my older machine and if I get success, I'll let you know. I also send in a helpdesk ticket and i'll see how that goes. I am not near my primary machine - flew yesterday to Hongkong. Here for 4 days - hope to get it fixed before then or it will make for a long flight home

CPOCMAN,

When you say it "has now" spread to your older laptop - what changed on your older laptop? I mean if your laptop was working fine, what changed between the last time it worked fine and the first time it didn't?

It is possible that you have one of the more difficult to detect root-kit type viruses on your PCs.

Witpqs,

My older laptop was working fine. I suspect that windows update did something as I saw about 50 new files added in to the update log. I'm deleting one by one to try to isolate it. I'm thinking that it should work as that was the only thing that was done differently.

I use norton 360 for my antivirus software and keep that one constantly updated. Should I switch to something else? Tks.

I stopped using Norton many years ago. It is possible that's where the trouble lies, but certainly I can't say that as more than a guess. You might try turning it off, then seeing if AE works (or turn it off then reinstall AE).

witpqs,

No luck either with Norton. Disabled it. No luck. Uninstalled it, no luck. Working through updates one by one but it is slow going. Will keep all posted once it either works, or doesn't.

I am fairly sure a window patch or install has changed the library versions.

I uninstalled 87 updates with nothing new - game still didn't run.

So I reinstalled the game, the 1106i update and - it partially works.

Problem is that in the game menu, all the letters are on a "black background". As I move my mouse down the menu, the words start to appear for the menu. Not much of a description - so I attached a screenshot.

Not sure what to do now... any suggestions?

Loading and running the game is sluggish.

Appreciate your help!

The sluggishness is probably due to a multi-core processor.  You need to add a command line switch or two to fix it.  With multi-core processors and sometimes with some graphics cards too, the cores end up fighting one another for control of the game.

The best flag to start with is
-cpu1

The black background can come from another program running on the PC at the same time.  Do you have any other applications open?

If you are running in windowed mode, the black backgrounds sometimes clear if you click on a hex with nothing in it (like an empty ocean hex), then minimize the window and maximize it again.

Bill

Hoorah! Finally got it fixed.

Problem was with my video cards. I had to take it out of crossfire - X mode. That stopped the black letters. Now, the display looks correct again.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help me. Now - back to my 2 PBEMs.
