Status: offline 		Gday people,have just watched again one of the greatest war films ever, A bridge to far,can anyone tell me how the pilots know when to turn the green light on, without dropping troops on other aircraft.This must have been the most difficult things to do. 30000plus troops thounds of aircraft and gliders,but never hear about troops hitting planes or other troops.

A great book to read is the one the film is based on A Bridge to far by C Ryan.

Status: offline 		Well first things first, the transports are organised into a formation which is all at the same vertical level - ie there are no planes underneath. Second, the gliders and paras usually drop seperately, either into a seperatre DZ or at seperate times.

There are many good books on airborne ops. Probably the pick of them for how airborne ops are conducted is Ridgeway's Paratroopers by Clay Blair.

Always new books being mentioned which I have to buy, that way I lose precious game playing time.

I don't know how I am to manage all these things, work full time, have a relationship and have just bought a house with her, so I can't leave her , have to watch Bundesliga every weekend (time spent with GF), playing a PBEM, plus reading books. I tried in giving up sleep but after a few days I noticed it wasn't really a good idea.

Any ides??

Status: offline 		Well I can tell you that you should avoid subscribing to The American Rifleman, not that you would be so inclined but this latest issue had 4 book titles in an biographical article about a paratrooper named Don Burgett. With the above 2 titles now I'm up to six !

Totally agree with this and JudgeDredd's seconding below. This book is amazing. The detail is great and it is so readable. I highly recommend it.

Decent read, but it's rather outdated now in the view of new research. The best IMVHO (out of those I've read, obviously) are Middlebrook's Arnhem 1944 and the already mentioned It Never Snows in September. For anyone doing a physical tour, the 'Battleground Europe' Market Garden series are terrific as well.

I like the movie, but I can't help feeling when I see it it's a bit of a shame the made it when they did. It was pretty much the last of the 'old school' blockbuster war movies, and that seems to really 'date' it now in comparison with the current 'realism' style of movies like Private Ryan and We Were Soldiers.

I'm sure I bought It Never Snows In September and didn't finish it for some reason. I'll have to check in the loft - though currently I'm reading Alfred Wainwrights Coast To Coast (not a war book!) as I plan to do this within the next couple of years.
