Buna has held out longer than I thought possible already, the Americal div is being worn down.
All xtra turns we hold is a bonus....

An intel report lets you see the firts 10? ship types in a harbour. What good does that do you when there are 500+ ships reported in harbour.
If there are numerous CVE's the carriers usually ain't too far away, Andy can't afford to split his CVEs from his CVs anymore.

Yes by all means, but he may also get stuck in the middle of the jungle when the monsoon hits and supplies are halved...
We can pull back from Moulmein, or defend in force accordingly to what is favorable. Getting obsessed with single bases isn't a good thing; let's see how things develop!

bah!

He can defend Moulmein. Lol, i hope....

how many troops you have at:

a) Raehang
b) Chiang Mai

You can use troops from both bases ive mentioned with one simpe goal:

cutting off Andy's main force from supply hub (Pegu-Rangoon).

Hmph, i would throw all available units for defending Moulmein. If M. falls than all your units north from M.-Rahaeng defensive line (Geisha line IIRC ) are cut off. And what is even more important, the whole theatre would fall apart, im afraid :/

if only Japanese are allowed to use swagger sticks...

Yep, Allies have ships everywhere but I think the show near PM and Ceylon are diversions and the Andy Fleet is probably in Central Pacific.
That's my guess...

We now have 3000 AV at Moulmein, 2000 at Rahang - Bangkok, 1500 in Malaya and 2000 at or near Chiang Mai (need time to march in).
I wish to fight a flexible battle taking advantage of terrain; if Andy wants to fight here I need to move 3000 AV to Rahaeng, keep the 3000 at Moulmein and have reserves situated at Bankok - Chiang Mai.
- With 1 infantry army in Moulmein and a flexible mechanized army near Rahaeng it should be possible to at least hold.

I also believe it's possible with a 6-8000 AV army to pose such a threat to enemy flanks even if Moulmein has to be abandoned.
But we need to draw a line in the jungle now soon; until now we've been withdrawing since Andy has been able to bypass and outmanouver our positions in Central Burma.

The side that makes most mistakes will taste the swagger stick

Lots of action!

Heayv air attacks on Buna; we order our bombers to hit back but they all stay home.
Our navy bombards but there is something wrong with the routine; 3-4 attempts and no casualties inflicted on enemy units
in our own base hexes with full detection levels and use of nigh spotters.

Andy add para's to his attack on Buna and the base finally falls.
Our next line in the jungle is Salamua; it has a full strength regiment and 4 forts.
The small base west of Salamua is bombed heavily.

Next turn:

Almost every Allied medium bomber in Burma hits Moulmein!
Our troops and base suffer only slight damage while over 50 Allied ac are claimed by AA units.

Seems like we were right; the first 110k enemy troops were followed by another 200k Allied troops from Pegu.
If we had stayed we would now have been tasting the swagger stick.

As it stands the situation is very tense: 320k enemy troops north of Moulmein means a major attack is imminent.
By the time these troops can cross the river and shock attack we will have 3000 AV and 3 forts in place.
- This is roughly ~35% or so of the number of troops brought by Andy. We also have 3 Army HQs including the Burma Area Army in place.
Our prep levels range from 20-30 -> 90s.

2 tank divisions are now east of Rahaeng and will provide valuable support if required.
I have ordered 5 more divisions in Malaya and Bangok to move north. We need to ride this one out!

The good news is that we don't have any supply problems anymore; I've unloaded 300k supplies and moved the Souther Area Army to Bangkok.

Question: The Southern Area Army has a command range of 5 hexes.
Is it worth moving it out of Bangkok and within range of Moulmein, will it provide worthwhile support?

why is Andy using fighter bombers at 100ft to attack a target that is defended by 80% of the IJ AA units? So many times Andy just makes me wonder.

3 possibilities:
- Andy underestimated or AA defenses, hasn't exactly scared him before.
- FBs were set to low altitude by mistake
- He wanted an all out effort as his army is marching south

Another action packed turn!

I suspected that if Andy wants to attack Moulmein he would immediately march the 330k army south.
To be prepared for the first assault I needed a slight delay to get 2 fresh divisions into Moulmein (850 AV that will boost the total to 3250, 2 tank divisions are 2-3 hexes away).
- To achieve this and check if enemy army actually is marching south I ordered 150 medium bombers to hit the army from 9k feet.

I ordered a large number of fighters to both sweep and escort the bombers.
In well known Jap FUBAR air attack style most of the bombers stayed home with 3 groups going in individually despite being coordinated by 3 Air HQs and all set to same altitude.

Our fighters went in though, and they met a very strong CAP 3 hexes away from Rangoon.
A fierce air battle claimed large number of victims. I used an old tactic to cushion our losses this time; 60 outdated Oscar IIs with green pilots were sent in together with the more capable
and experienced fighters. So if we disregard Oscar losses the results were ok even though I didn't see such a massive battle over enemy turf.

The bombers that did hit the enemy inflicted more casualties than they would have if the enemy units were in combat mode; exactly this was the point of our attack.
- Attacks on LCUs in move mode switch them over into combat mode and the combined stack movement order can either be delayed or become uncoordinated.

Hopefully we achieved this.

In the Central Pacific a familiar sighting was made heading towards Palmyra.
Would be typical Andy tactic to go back here at the same time as he's attacking in Burma and Southern New Guinea.
- I welcome another round here but let's see what happens!

So... how much troops do you need to land at Pegu?
Seriously, you have to stand and fight. Even if Allies currently are desperately short on supplies in Burma, they have either wait, and rot, or they can march, and try to outflank you, so you just let them maneuver, without any gains.
There is rail line to Chiang Mai, so you should plan to use it for troops movement.

The "convoy" had exactly ONE escort. Talking about "Japanese Super E's"
And obviously AAMGs are working just fine, the problem seems to be with guns only.

Question: The Southern Area Army has a command range of 5 hexes.
Is it worth moving it out of Bangkok and within range of Moulmein, will it provide worthwhile support?

According to manual, when your LCU are within range of Corps HQ, you need them to be within range of TWICE of Area HQ, to get full bonus. Burma Area Army should be enough, and Bangkok is also in range, as long as you have Corps HQ in hex.

quote:

I used an old tactic to cushion our losses this time; 60 outdated Oscar IIs with green pilots were sent in together with the more capable and experienced fighters.

What are the statistics of "green"? You should aim at 60, because this seems to be cap for fastest training.

Have you checked already, what is your best fighter currently? It seems Franks are nothing special. Compare units loses with kill claims to get better estimation.

Hey, there are a lot of swagger sticks marching towards Moulmein. Yes, you have to make stand there and fight. And stop Andy...

Everyone talks about monsoons, when they start and whats their effect on game (attacks etc...) ?

Will you commit KB against that conwoy in Pacific? It could be just another supply or troop conwoy right? So that could be nice and juicy target. If not, well, that all depends about your air strength at Line islands.... I recall that ive spanked Andy's CVs in 1943 (or it was 1944?) at Marshalls but i had enormous support for KB from island AFs, a lot of finest IJ AF fighters and pilots (georges, franks..).

If not, i would not go in direct CVs vs CVs clash, but im sure that you know that.

My feel is that Monsoon effects are not as dramatic, and will not be enough to force Andy to pause now that he has gotten there. Supply routes are now short and good (primary roads, railroads) compared to the non-existing links between India and the Burmese basin.  That Andy will keep pushing doesn't strike me as a surprise, but the way to reach any place that would affect the japanese HI is far. He will probably probe the flanks before crossing the river into Moulmein directly, otherwise he will face a nasty shock attack, no??? Or would he be so bold to hope for a lucky toss of the dice? He has had bad luck for a long time, so it must come sometime...

Andy might be going mid-term for Saigon and Singapore, maybe to support or cover simultaneous invasions on Java and Sumatra, which would cut oil and fuel resources in half.
Near term, he might be satisfied with Bangkok and bases around: his 4EBs should essentially neutralize the DEI and SRA. Once he reaches the line Victoria Point-Battambang, his B-24, extended range max 20, can even strike Singapore. Already from Bangkok, the B-29, normal range 28 and ext'd 35, can reach anything from Hongkong, Takao, Manila, Balikpapan, Miri, Oosthaven, Palembang... That would be a lot of bases that suddenly would have to be stacked with CAP, and even without such long-legged escorts, Andy could use the B-29s to essentially sweep your facilities. I would especially worry about day and night port attacks on your large bases, Singapore, Hongkong, etc -- 4EB on port strike are quite good to cripple the IJN.

I am all in favor of considering a direct strike on Pegu, maybe a pincer movement from Chiang Mei and an amphibious raid. If you can isolate the 330k army, it still may be too much to swallow, but perhaps you catch Andy risking his air transports during resupply runs, and nipple away at the edges without too high casualties. Perhaps more. It would all depend on what Andy leaves in the rear, i.e. Rangoon and the Burma basin, that he could quickly detach to reopen the supply routes using brute force. At least something that could be worth considering, especially if the bulk of his navy now would show at the Line Islands.

How were your pilot losses in the last turn?  What level of pilots and how many 70+ fighter jockeys do you have in your Frank and George outfits there? Just curious, my impression in the past weeks was also that the Franks are quite good, but still notably inferior to the Georges.

Have you set your sub-TFs to lower threat ratings for picket duty? I never tried that. Late war the Jap subs are merely an annoyance to force the Allied to detach ASW units.

Seems you'll have at least one, perhaps two big parties at hand...

IIRC, Andy and Pzb have a house rule about no attacks in monsoon season ...

thx Pax, didnt know about that. Is there any other advantage/disadvantage with those monsoons?

Janh,

I think that PzB is in very good position. Never understood Andy's oppsesion with Burma Theatre (or its better to say with Commonwealth theatre) but i guess it has something with his nationality

IMHO, that is exactly best strategy for - Japan. As long as Allies commit armees there, they dont attack the soft spots of Japan's defensive perimeter. I wont get any details, since Aliied boys lurking here . As you had point, the main concerns for our Imperial FBs is that our oilfields can be threaten... but thats the risk we have to take. I have no problem with B29's attacking HK, MAnila, Takao, but I DO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH ATTACKING OUR OIL RESOURCES!!!

I do not know a lot of new A2A model (didnt touch WiTP for three years i think), but 100-200 finest george and frank pilots can distract Swagger sticks from deep space strikes, i hope, lol.

as you may see guys (pic attached) i do belive that PzB can buy several months (until the end of the 44 at least!) before he must give up from Malaya and Singapore.

Andy pressed at Burma because he was defeated by PzB ina Carrier Battle, and this (Burma) is the only theatre where CV is not required to advance.

I think that PzB is in very good position. ... as you may see guys (pic attached) i do belive that PzB can buy several months (until the end of the 44 at least!) before he must give up from Malaya and Singapore.

I absolutely agree.

Pzb is in great shape and Burma is a complete sideshow. Barring a mistake or a series of terrible rolls, nothing in this area is going to impact the end game.

PzB needs to keep watch on the Pacific and the PI. The only way Andy can get to the HI fast enough to avoid an allied defeat is one of those two routes. He does not have game time left to move overland from Burma.

We're getting close to where Andy should be showing up with an invasion force that will tip his hand as to how he is going to approach the HI. I don't think he has the forces any more to support 2 drives, and maybe not even enough for a real feint. He can't afford to lose any amphib op now ... he has to bring the hammer every single time. That means everything: CV's, 4E's, BB's ... all of it.

PzB just needs to upset Andy's timetable one or two more times and game over ... not necessarily even sink ships, just cause an amphib op to fail ... Andy will run out of time .... Andy's got have all of his troops prepping now for each future amphib. He won't have backup's. So, cause one amphib to fail and he will be 60 days before he can have troops prepped again ... it's like the IJ expansion in '42 now for Andy. Tight timetable and constricted ability to recover due to time.

BANZAI!!!!

I agree completely, Its a difficult time for Japan and PxB is once again playing it superbly. Andys ue of air is a bit of a mystery to me. Allies really should have air dominance by now and the fact he used fighters on ground attack is wasteful until the skies are clear of the Japs.

Thx for the input and discussions all!

Yes, no doubt we have reached our stand in Burma now! My mama always said that I shouldn't pick fights I couldn't win...so I've been trying to avoid just that!-)
We now have 3250 AV in Moulmein and 750 more in the form of 2 tank divisions are 2 days march away.

When I say green they're just out of fligh school with high 30 low 40 air combat skill.
Got 10k pilots int the pools now...need to get rid of some cause they're ruining the Empire's economy

No, not tried reduced aggressiveness settings for subs, can try but I thought it was Captains aggression rating that triggered an attack...
...and if first spotted or attacking there's no easy way out?

George fighters is a bit better than Frank me thinks but it really depends on pilot quality.
In yesterday's fight we lost 50 KIA and 50 MIA - today we barely lost 2-3. Fighting over enemy turf is devastating for pilot losses.

Nice screen Pauk-San!
Today we lost 2 Mavis search planes to the Allied fleet moving towards Palmyra, obviously we got carriers and incoming bogeys!
It could be a decoy but I can't quite see that Andy is ready for a major adventure anywere else either.
Question is whether it's worth sending KB to Line Islands well into 1944. Let Andy spill his guts trying to reduce the place?

With 8000 AV in theatre I hope to be able to stall Allies throughout 1944, but most likely we'll be forced to give ground over time.

Also, I thought we have a house rule but Andy says we don't. The only reason why fighting stops in Burma during monsoon is the 50% reduction in supply flow.
So if he's able to keep supplies flowing (of which I have no doubt) the war will just grind on...

Ok, today's turn!
We have to investigate this turn, I've been talking to Andy and we have ageed to send the turn to Michael for analysis.

Scenario: Andy ordered an all out sweep of Pisanlouke with 400 fighters from Rangoon and follow up by heavy bombing mission.
Result: All Allied fighters stayed home and didn't sweep (Rangoon shrouded in, but bombers still flew).
- The 160 bombers and 30 escort fighters from Rangoon - Pegu area hit Pisanlouke, but we defended with 200 Franks and George's.
The CAP had 30+ min warning time and I expected massacre.

What happened? Another battle like the carrier battle were we flew through Andy's CAP.
After gunning down some bombers and escorts the bombers suddenly slipped through and nuked Pisanlouke.
The 160 bombers caused 100 / 97 damage.

While losses were rather light, we lost some 20 transports and 20 fighters, I was very disheartened by the fact that 200 crack fighters
can't stop 160 meds and 4Es from closing a major base complex. This isn't real!!

Also: when I tried railing the air units our of Pisanlouke they refused...I had a unit of only damaged transports and this unit was allowed to rail out.
What has happened here, always been able to rail air units out of a base We need to look into this as well.

Andy has promised not to bomb Pisanlouke again next turn so I don't have to withdraw all units for 60 days to avoid them being destroyed.
This is fair play from Andy! but as mentioned, something is cheesy here....

Thx Rob, we're just going with the flow now! Andy does have air superiority as his 4Es can level any base he wish.
The use of Hurries as low level fighter bombers is perhaps ok if he got lots of other fighters units to perform A2A?

I thought only pilots in the "schools" cost HI. Once they graduate and in the pool, do they still cost? Not sure on this one ...

Gun power has a quality of its own ... and George has those lovely 4x20mm. Some will say its a game engine thing, but pilots that I know say the more gun up front the better ... so I think the engine has gotten this aspect spot on (WTG Elf!!!)

Yep, and it will be in your favor for the balance of the game ... defense mostly with a little offense ...

Thx to you and Andy for giving us a great AAR to discuss in first place! It's much like reading the daily newspaper...

I never played with threat tolerance for sub TFs so far, just never had the idea before you mentioned the picket duty. Will have to, if they still sight but disengage before detection or engagement, they would again be valuable assets late war. For surface combat TFs I usually play with the tolerance settings to make up for the low leader aggressiveness ratings, or to dampen the spitfires a bit. For example putting Tanaka in a surface combat TF and raising threat tolerance beyond normal can be suicidal, as I recently learned all over again. He found more than one Allied SCTF, and engaged relentless despite all main batteries and torpedo stations having run dry. Almost cost me Musashi and 2 CA, the little bugger.

Not sure about that... N1K might/should be better against bombers for sure but Ki-84 is so much faster it should definitely be better than N1K against fighters at least until the service rate 2 N1K2-J which PzB doesnt have yet. We here probably see difference in pilot quality and air unit leader stats plus PzB might deploy those 2 fighters differently.

As you can see Ki-84 has only marginally lower MVR while it climbs somewhat better and is considerably faster. Speed advantage is +29, which similar to what Ki-44 enjoys over Ki-43-IIb(+35mph) and Zero M5(+25mph)...

Yep, read all the stats and know them. BUT, in the game (and IRL) firepower is a HUGE thing.

PzB's experience is exactly the same as mine. Now the REALLY good thing: Frank is IJA and George in IJN so you will get both and be able to fly both in combat. You can then draw your own opinion. Watch the replays carefully. What you see is when a George gets a shot, the target is hurt bad at a minimum. Each George attack removes on allied a/c (either a kill or a withdrawal due to damage) improving the overall odds each time. Its a big deal in the replays. You won't see that happen with any other plane, except some of the Hurri's.

PS: If the Frank had a 4x20mm version ... JFB dream machine.

The 10k pilots show a monthly cost of 50k HI...so most likely they're still in the pools or still counted as in training!?
Will try subs with low threat tolerance and see what happens!

If our fighters get "the dive" they're superior to their opponents no matter whether they're a Frank or a George.
Also, if they get into range of bombers they get 1 shot...so yes, heavy fire power is very important! The 4x30mm of the Me-262 + 12 rockets would be perfect!-)

Have anyone here tested the SAM fighter in number on KB carriers?
Should eat Hellcats for breakfast... Guess US carrier fighters will be upgrading to Bearcats in late 45 though.

Burma - Central Pacific

Our naval bombers from Port Blair have finally found a range that keeps them outside of leaky CAP from Rangoon.
2 liberty ships and a DE were destroyed today.

The enemy flotilla is drawing closer to Palmyra, 10 hexes now.
Sent a patrol boat close but no naval air attacks. Could be a feint...

I dont want to hijack this thread but one more comment... While it could be argued that the air battles in witpae are much bloodier than they were IRL, I still think we see way too many "damaged" and ops losses in relation to shot-downs.

There isnt a place on any WW2 fighter plane where one can place and detonate a 20mm or bigger shell(or say, a pressure or frag grenade) and not risk to mortally damage the airframe and put shrapnels everywhere that pierce the cockpit, fuel tanks, engine cooling system etc. For example Luftwaffe even downgraded Fw 190 from 4 x 20mm + 2 x 13mm by 2 cannons to the Fw 190 D-9 which was supposed to be used as air superiority fighter. One connecting burst would kill or disable anything already so the extra 20mms in wings would be just more weight and slow down the very important the rate of roll.

Same as the USAAF and USN didn't exactly feel an immediate need to upgrade from 50 cals to 3 to 4 times more powerful cannons, when 50 cals worked well enough against 90%+ fighter targets(then there were of course the logistics and the fact that US made cannons were crap and jammed all the time but still ).

Now against bombers its a different thing and as mentioned the fighters attacking bomber formations only got one chance so firepower was very important when the firing times were short to inflict maximum damage.

Not saying the game is wrong, this is just my opinion, and there for sure are more things as to why N1K is at least seemingly better than the Ki-84 in the game. If the battles were purely sweeps vs. CAP we might see slightly different results.

That 4-cannon Ki-84b... unfortunately the Ki-84a doesn't upgrade to it so its not worth the R&D, perhaps not even building at all as the Ki-84r can be accelerated to or almost the same arrival date.

If you look at the Ace board the top of the list got 12 George and 8 Frank pilots.
That's kinda typical...

Allied fighters are very durable so heavy armament is needed to bring them down right away.
Guess I would swap some speed and manouver for more heavy guns in AE

The Allied fleet is moving closer to Line Island, but it's slow going.
Carriers and heavy escorts spotted, seems like it's the real McCoy!

- Should we let Andy have the Line Islands if he can defeat the garrisons?
Not sure it's worth committing KB with so little LBA support.

Is it feasible to form a CL bases SC TF (or bombardment) to run into Rangoon full speed from Tavoy??

Not really, risk of getting hurt by mines, PT boats and LBA is much to big to make it feasible...
What can a few cruisers achieve but get themselves sunk!?

Ok, this was a revealing turn!

The full buglieness of the Allied fleet near the Line Islands is revealed!
560 carrier ac hit Palmyra and 75 B-29 Superforts from Pearl followed up - the wars first deployment of these beasts.

Allied ac hit dozens of bases in Burma and New Guinea area as well.

How many CVs and CVEs should we expect Andy to field by now?
Guess we're looking at 25+ CVEs, 8 CVLs and ca 10 fleet carriers?

Line Islands

First Matsu class destroyer type has arrived, cheap to build and relatively efficient but with a reduced top speed of 27 knots.
Ideal escort vessels...

We got ca 60k troops in Line Islands: 930 AV on Xmas and 570 spread out on the other atolls.
Far from enough fighters and bombers to take on the gigantic Allied fleet so we go for mines, subs, PT boats and night naval bombers to begin with.
There is also 2 light cruisers and a single destroyer at Xmas; the Island chains fleet...been there for years!-)

PS! Read in a newspaper today that they found the remains of a German tourist at Noku Hiva (teeth).
They think the cannibals ate him..guess they're fond of sauerkraut

OK, so now we know how Andy is going to advance ... Pacific, not north from OZ. Starting with Line Islands and working in ... all my guesses here ... interesting to see what the master thinks!

The whole Line Islands adventure, was purely to delay Australia routes. Since OZ already supported two invasions, and Allies are advancing through New Guinea, no reason to hold Line Islands anymore. Although knowing where Allied CVs are, opens interesting opportunity for KB. Maybe strike on PH, if you have it in the area?

But seriously, PM, or Rangoon/Akyab seems interesting...

quote:

ORIGINAL: PzB

We now have 3250 AV in Moulmein and 750 more in the form of 2 tank divisions are 2 days march away.

I am guessing we will see repeat of that situation. Now half of the army will cross the river on SE of Moulmein. By sending your Armored Divisions there you tied your fast reserves, you should get infantry there and put fast units on right flank.

How much forces are there around Mandalay? Although attack there seems tempting, you can at least send your bombers against lightly defended bases in open, to destroy supply.

I still think, that after Line Islands Andy will try Kuriles. He needs base to station B-29 in range of HI, and provide fighter support for sweeps. Although safer route will be to isolate Truk by invasions N-NE, and support from New Guinea.
Next possible land-supported targets will be Ambon, and Sumatra, so prepare yourself for those .

I guess no one will want to give you definite advise on this one... and be the fool that suggested your way into disaster. Your instincts will hopefully guide you to the right decision anyway...

The CVx numbers seem sound, plus minus 2 in each category would be my guesstimate. Note that you spotted not only Hellcats, but also Corsairs -- perhaps from the CVE? For sure the pure number alone ain't telling the whole story at this date, not only because the 4EB "airbase and ships-in-port" killer B-29 is participating. The big question to me seems to be Andy pilot quality, especially the fighter jockeys -- after the big defeats at the line islands and at SRA it may be that they are now very numerous, but hardly exceed 60-70 in skill?

Whatever Andy put together this time, he must think that it is more than enough to risk a battle with KB and to defeat large island garrisons. So a CV battle would seem quite a risk. Of course the thought of inflicting another blowing defeat here is very attractive, especially since that could this time mean the end of the war. But if it becomes a draw, or even defeat, one will have to ask for what reason the battle was fought at all. And the others have said it, the Line Islands have somewhat lost their important strategic value by now as Japanese offensive capabilities, and the threat the islands thus pose as a staging area, are diminishing slowly. Strategy has switched from holding all gains to delaying the advance. Since you have little LBA there compared to a fight staged on the Marinas or elsewhere, plus you have a veeeery long distance to the HI for any damaged ship to travel, the cards seem to be speak against putting KB at stake now. However, I would hold it close by in case Andy commits another fubar, or suffers another "really bad luck" day. That would be my thinking. But don't let yourself be misguided by that.

Good point. So not necessarily a Pacific thrust, he could just be shortening his supply lines to OZ for the DEI movement ...
