Subs

A Pete from MKB reports a hit on a sub near Georgetown. Good news so long as enemy subs don't reveal the location of our CVs to Cuttlefish.

4th Fleet

We suspect CF is moving ships to Suva via the restricted waters to the NE of Fiji. We re-direct Mavis patrols from Funafuti to test this theory.

SE Fleet

We finish unloading supplies at Tulagi. Both the AMC pickets and South Seas Fleet retire on Truk as the threat of immediate attack in the Solomons fades.

14th Army

No change.

16th Army

We occupy Kaimana by rowboat a few phases before we would have taken it by DA.

25th Army

Only a few days before a massed attack on Batavia that we believe will take the base outright and allow re-deployment of 4 crack divisions.

Today's big news is that ASW aircraft and MKB aircraft suddenly spot 3 Allied subs at the head of the Malacca Strait just east of Sabang. CF may get a lucky spot of MKB as it passes. We can only sail on with the best guess course to avoid him. Hold your breath, readers.

15th Army

Sweeps of Imphal but the enemy fighters sit on their fields. Tomorrow we will bomb him on those fields.

China

No change.

Other

We hear more sinking sounds today. Perhaps Zeilin sank on the way home after all.

The Rangers slip by the Cardinals and MKB slips by the lurking subs, but Gaddafi doesn't slip by the rebels.

Subs

I-174 misses an AM in an ASW TF near Madras. The daily Op reports states "engineering casualty aboard I-159" and the sub now has ENG damage of 9(4). Sounds like a homemade still operated by M&M Enterprises blew up or something.

4th Fleet

I-172, watching Canton Island, reports being overflown by an Allied torpedo plane. Probably nothing, but we swing the arcs of our Mavii at Funafuti back to Canton just in case the enemy is planning a CV raid.

SE Fleet

Troops unload at Buka and Torokina in Bougainville. These bases will be built up as a last line of defense for Rabaul. We unload a very small engineer unit at Woleai, primarily to facilitate transfer of air groups between 16th Army and SE Fleet AOs.

14th Army

No change.

16th Army

Five B-17s visit Daly Waters. We will have a base force at Katherine and 45 crack Zeros on LRCAP soon. That many Zeros should get multiple attack runs on such a small number of bombers and actually kill a few.

Siaoe occupied; Maumere invaded as DBCL work cranks up. It will go more slowly due to expiration of the landing bonus.

25th Army

CF's sub routes near Sabang appeared to be east - west patrols to interdict traffic between Singers and Rangoon. We were thus able to guess correctly and sneak MKB past, kind of like how you putt at a moving obstacle on a putt putt golf course. The CVs are into the Indian Ocean and will move toward the target. We feel compelled to put up the attack planes for fear of stumbling into the UK Fleet blind, despite the risk of discovery. Who knows, discovery may have the unexpected benefit of causing CF to run from Colombo and out from under those nasty AA guns. We plan to start up an Allied game and analyze the AA unit to pick the best altitude for our Kates. Cross your fingers and pop the corn, boys. We're going in!

15th Army

Sweeps of Imphal find no CAP. Our bombers then plaster 4 H81s on the ground and damage 12 more while inflicting 49 runway and numerous supply hits. Not bad considering recon shows 19 fighters present. BANZAI!

China

CF is moving to extricate the trapped corps near Wuchang. We are moving to block this. The blocking move will serve as a maskirovka for our effort to isolate the Wuchang stack.

5th Fleet

All elements of Operation Winter Lotus re-fuel at Attu and set course for Japan.

Other

We are really stacking the resources into the Home Islands, and reserve stocks at Tokyo are back up. Meanwhile, two large oil convoys will arrive soon to inaugurate regular shipments from the DEI. Fuel at Truk is a bit of a problem but the first regular convoy will arrive there within the week as well.

I'm glad the resource issue is working out now.

I think everyone has a problem keeping Truk fueled properly. That seems to be the hub for KB as well as the surface fleet when it's transiting the area. All those big ships just suck Truk dry regularly.

Mike,

Yeah, I'm using Balikpapan to stock it up, but it's just taking time to build up a reserve. However, I've now got the slow AOs full and two big convoys en route.

One thing about Hokkaido. I switched the resource and oil convoys from Sakhalin to dump at Sapporo as suggested by you and nygiants59. This works great but I noticed I now have to ship a small amount of fuel to Hokkaido as the convoys are re-fueling there. Is that normal or is this a concern?

And nothing like a failed attack to start the Empire falling. Those AA guns still give me the Willies.

I'm convinced that Balikpapan should do nothing but send it's fuel to Truk.

Hmm, they won't refuel in Ominato? Interesting. When they're in Ominato, you can manually refuel them. It's a pain, but you probably don't have to do it much. What class are you using there?

Now that I think about it, the TFs that move between Sapporo and Sakhalin, don't stop in any port where that island produces fuel. They're going to need fuel at some point. I'd take a TK in that area, fill it with fuel and dump it at Sapporo. Set Sapporo to horde fuel and you should be good to go for a long time. You can do the same at Hakodate if you'd like.

Yeah, that is the problem - neither Sakhalin nor Sapporo have access to fuel. I'm dumping 16K there and setting Sapporo to stockpile.

That should do the trick. I pick certain days of the month to check for potential "issues" such as fuel problems you just mentioned. I'll pick different days for different issues and keep a list of which bases to check. So, for example, I'll pick the 5th of the month for fuel at CS ports that don't have access to fuel and list each port and how much fuel was there in each of the last few months. That way I get a trend and can plan for replenishment before it runs out. Also, I don't do everything on the last day of the month, making it one of those week long (real life) turns. The key (for me) is to keep detailed lists of things to do so I don't forget the numbers. A binder works well. Also note that if you pick the 29th through 31st, you may not hit it every month.

ping to Cribtop, there's a thread on the mainpage, "Where do the survivors go" that mebbe you could add to, if you've had any results from Lifeboat Doctrine. if Lifeboats pick up survivors, are the survivors always disrupted? will disrupted survivors repair on-board the Lifeboat, or must they be unloaded at a friendly port before they'll un-disrupt?

jmalter,

I will check it out. Without question I have demonstrated that unoccupied (or supply only occupied) ships will pick up survivors. In my case, the survivors soon unloaded at a port and captured it with overwhelming odds, so I never paid attention to their status. However, IIRC, the elements recovered by lifeboat had a pretty high DIS and FAT rating.

I would have some, not all, of your CS convoys that go to Ominato return with fuel. I set my CS convoy to Shanghai to bring Resources to Honshu and back to Shanghai with Supplies. You may not want to leave it with these settings for the whole game, but after a few weeks, you should have enough fuel in those bases.

May 24, 1942

A very quiet day, so we will only report on active AOs.

SE Fleet

Munda Point makes level 3 airfield.

16th Army

Maumere occupied. 10 enemy LCUs pop up 1 hex from Daly Waters. We send the tank regiment we had lingering up the trail where it forks toward Broome and Wyndham to cut them off while the new IJAAF bombers based in Darwin are ordered to attack.

25th Army

38th Division arrives at Batavia. DA tomorrow.

MKB RVs and turns due West so as to eventually approach Colombo from the SW. We gambled and kept the attack planes down today. Now it's time to put them up.

15th Army

We sweep Imphal but our bombers don't fly. Still no Allied CAP.

Subs

I-15 misses an AM in an ASW convoy near Sydney. Today the sub component of Operation Raging Bull is put in place. 11 subs are parked in the 2 hexes into which ships exiting Colombo can move. 2 Glen equipped subs are lingering off the east coast of Ceylon with the intention of flying recon missions on D minus 1. We expect a ton of ships are still present but obviously don't want to risk the attack if CF moved them.

4th Fleet

Search planes pick up some activity NE of Canton. We will investigate further whether this is a convoy or an attack and respond appropriately.

SE Fleet

16 B-17s make a concerted raid on Horn Island's airfield.

14th Army

No change.

16th Army

We bomb the enemy stack near Daly, which now has a move arrow back toward Tennant Creek. CF probably spotted our flanking tank regiment and is sending at least one unit to block it, or perhaps is calling off the advance as he now sees that 2 more LCUs are present since his last attempt. 2 ATG units will land at Darwin in a few days and further reinforce the base.

Salajar occupied; Timoeka invaded.

25th Army

DA Batavia does well but doesn't take the base outright. Forts are dropped to 2, odds 2:1, casualties 2889(94) vs 1519(37). One enemy LCU is destroyed, one of our small engineer units is wrecked. We will rest the engineer unit but attack again tomorrow as the rest of our troops are in good shape. It was good to see that the 100% prep most of our units have effectively canceled out the light urban bonus.

MKB closes on Colombo. We are currently at D minus 2.

Air raids on Imphal are scrubbed again by weather.

China

Hong Kong makes level 9 port. We wavered on whether this was worth doing, but supplies in China are in great shape and the upcoming South China operations should push the big port and shipyard out of the range of Chinese bombers (not US bombers, but so far CF has not moved any in).

Dear Cribtop,

I would like to call to your attention that some of your readers, even when sipping the beginnings of that THIRD cup of coffee, are inexplicably possessed of "pre-coffee" IQ. Under such limiting conditions, an opening such as that above can cause a loyal follower of this AAR to read your entire post and then fret "But he didn't even mention fleet oilers!" I'm just sayin'.

I understand, witpqs. Perhaps my OCD is rubbing off on my readers?

For the record, the fleet oilers are at Georgetown, ready to sortie into the Indian Ocean to re-fuel MKB if necessary.

Of perhaps greater interest, I moused over the enemy TF NE of Canton Island and it is reported as 2 ships, one of which is a CA, headed west toward Baker Island. They will soon be in range of Nells out of TB. I wonder whether this is a small FT TF invasion of empty Baker or a raiding group trying to slip into our perimeter? My hope is that they keep sailing west and become fish food.

OK, Cribtop Intel reports that Colombo's starting forces include the Heavy AA unit, with 24 X 3.7" Mk II AA guns, and the Colombo Fortress, with a bunch of Bren AAMGs. The AAMGs can be excluded as their ceiling is 1,200 feet. However, the 3.7s have a ceiling of 24,000 feet. Thus we can't fly our Kates over these monsters and have a reasonable chance to hit anything.

Question: With a ceiling of 24K, is there any altitude less than 20K better than another? I usually fly at 14K, but was considering going higher to reduce losses. I assume the higher the better, but wondered if there was any "break point" so to speak where losses will drop off dramatically. I doubt it, but it's worth asking.

Another option does exist. We could bomb at 25K feet, accept that we won't hit much, and hope CF tries to run for it. At that point, subs, Tanaka Force and MKB's bombers on nav attack should inflict terrible losses. If he doesn't run, we could always bomb lower the next day (although then he might be able to move in some fighters, but we doubt he has many within 1 days' hop of Colombo.

Thoughts, readers?

If he hasn't moved in more AAA units the flak isnt that bad, at least in stock game. I attacked Colombo twice with both B5Ns and D3As at 15kft(to level bomb) and suffered about 7-8% losses, more than half of them damaged planes crashing at landing, and easily acceptable. I think the LCU count at Colombo then was 8 or 9...

Thanks for the info. I do fear he may have moved in more, but I suspect most of the "more" will be smaller stuff (Bofors, etc) that can be evaded by flying around 14 or 16K feet.

Actually, here are the combat reports... Looks like I remembered wrong - the first attack was normal altitudes (1400 and 9000) but the the follow-on raids I set both to 9000 to stay out of machine gun range. First day's losses were larger than losses from all other attacks combined:

Just to make sure I understand, as I think there were some typos on your numbers, the first day went in at 14000 and 9000; next day went in at 19000 and suffered fewer losses, correct?

Maybe a hangover of my WITP days, but I set TBs at 9k, DBs at 12k, and fighters at 15k.

I tend to set everything at 14K on CVs. Rationale is that it's the highest altitude that allows dive bombing. That gets CAP fighters as high as possible while still allowing co-ordinated escort (I wish the CAP could be higher, but you never know when you're going to launch a nav attack). 14K hasn't seemed to have any negative impact on TB attacks or accuracy.

No, it looks like I just used 9000 to prevent the D3As from dive bombing and release at 1000-2000 where they took a lot more AAA hits.. B5N losses had been low enough so I just used the same alt.

Batavia falls while Colombo sleeps - for one more night.

How about that Rangers game? Without question the craziest game I've ever seen in the World Series. This analysis says it all: http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/7545/the-top-21-moments-of-a-crazy-game-5

Subs

No contacts, but a huge amount of subs lurk off Colombo with the twin missions of killing fleeing ships and rescuing Kate pilots.

4th Fleet

The TF spotted yesterday turns out to be a bombardment TF based on BBs New Mexico and Idaho, 2 CAs and 6 DDs. No one is home, the airfield is trashed. The enemy TF ends 14 hexes from TB and is spotted by our Bettys, but no attacks fly. This doesn't seem to be the prelude to an invasion, but we suspect the idea is forming in CF's mind now that he knows the base is empty.

SE Fleet

Reinforcements for Tulagi and Milne Bay arrive at Truk and will ship out ASAP.

14th Army

We load a regiment at Cebu for defended base DBCL work. On Luzon, enemy AS at Clark is collapsing.

16th Army

Timoeka occupied, continuing an annoying trend of the rowboats grabbing bases after our DBCL troops invade them. Endeh invaded.

We got CF's attention with our flanking tank regiment near Daly. Today he hits it with 5 B-17s but misses. Our bombers kill 5 tank squads in his stack, which appears to be withdrawing. ATGs have unloaded and are moving to the front. We will set an LRCAP trap soon.

25th Army

DA Batavia drops forts to 1 and takes the base with 3:1 odds. 17 LCUs and 2 air groups (1 X Mitchell, 1 X 139) are destroyed. 21,702 admittedly doomed and inferior troops enter our PoW camps. Facilities are 100% damaged, which is unfortunate. However, if I had to pick the big DEI base I got with 100% damage, it would be Batavia.
This action ends major resistance in the DEI and frees up 5 divisions. Four will ship out for China and Operation Red Dragon, one will remain as a theater reserve.

Elements of 2nd Raiding Regiment seize Christmas Island IO, which was empty.

15th Army

All three brigades of 33rd Division re-unite 1 hex SE (map) of Kalemyo. Weather has been atrocious and prevents air attack by either side.

China

Sian makes level 3 forts and switches to airfield construction.

We have moved a brigade such that it both blocks relief of the two corps trapped SE of Wuchang and provides cover for our effort to isolate the Wuchang stack. The last few months in China seem quiet but in fact have ensured the starving isolation of the entire ChiCom Army and slowly caused CF to feed more and more troops into positions in front of Wuchang. Positions that will be threatened with encirclement once the southern offensive begins.

Aboard Carrier Akagi

Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi blinked as the first rays of the rising sun caught his eyes on the bridge of Imperial Japan's most important flagship. Most would consider this a good omen, but to Nagumo it was one more worrying annoyance on a day fraught with risk. Below him, the last strike aircraft took off to assemble for yet another air raid on a major Allied port. Previous attacks at Pearl Harbor, Darwin and Soerabaja had won easy and important victories. Today the Royal Navy's base at Colombo was the intended victim.

In many ways this attack was more carefully planned than its predecessors, and so far it had gone off like clockwork, with the fleet approaching undetected to within attack range. Still the nervous Admiral couldn't help but wonder whether this time the enemy would be ready. All recon showed an inviting and almost undefended target, but Nagumo worried about the report yesterday from one of Carrier Soryu's torpedo bombers. The pilot had observed what appeared to be an enemy submarine cruising SSE of the fleet. No danger of intercept, the B5N2 crew had cheerfully reported. The question in Nagumo's mind was whether the sub crew had in turn seen the patrol plane; and, if so, whether they had assumed it was a sub-launched Type 0 small reconnaissance plane or if they had correctly identified it as the carrier borne aircraft the Americans so colorfully called the "Kate." Even if the sub's skipper knew his business, and even if the Eastern Fleet's commanders correctly interpreted the danger, there was probably little they could do overnight to bolster Colombo's defenses.

Still, Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi worried...

lol...exciting! Have you anticipated CF attempting to break out of your China encirclement and where he would head? How will you react?
