OK, maybe not. Actually, I think it's pretty good but I do have a couple of questions:

1) Do all subs launch their torps at the same range? Unlike surface combat there isn't any indication of the range between the sub and it's target. This is true when engaging on the surface, too. If range is taken into account then it would be pretty neat to see that on the combat replay (ie Tarpon fires 2x Mk-14 Torps at 800 yds). Does range affect sub warfare at all?

2) Is there code that keeps a sub from firing its last salvo of torps? The only time I've seen a sub fire ALL of its fish is when it attacked on the surface and went into a torpedeo launching frenzy, sometines all 24 at one target. But if it has four left it will never attack again. This is only in my experience but it has bee consistant through mid '43 in my game.

Thanks,
Greg

Nope. I have subs go bingo torps all the time.

Maybe there is a routine that has them RTB for re-supply B4 they are bingo, not sure about that. 'Cause I also see that as well. RTB with 2 torps left ... yep see that also ...

My sub commanders must want to keep a reserve for the trip home because they are loathe to shoot them. I've kept them on station for weeks and I'll be damned if they ever make an attack even though I'll see one, two sometimes three enemy TF's in the same hex. Must be bad dice rolls for me.

My experience is that submarines routinely fire off their last torpedoes but that may be a function of the commander of the sub.

IRL the range at which a submarine commander would launch torpedoes would be a function of his skill and aggressiveness. In the Atlantic there were some U-boat commanders who would run into a convoy at night closing to 500 yds from their targets before firing and thus scoring with practically every torpedo. Fortunately the Allies those were in the minority.

That's why I ask. It would happen in the Pacific, too. Especially at night. I remeber reading about the Wahoo and other boats who had pretty aggressive commanders who would get as close as possible to improve the odds. Be nice if this was factored into the game, even if it's just chrome.

Question Three should have been:

3)  How is it that ASW is able to identify the particular sub they are depth -charging, sometimes incorrectly due to FoW, but ID it nevertheless?

Ok.  Sorry.  Slightly off topic by being more to do with ASW than subs.

Jus' tryin' to get my post count up.

It's just a guess. Note that if you attack the same sub multiple times, the name usually changes each time. I just use the class. I "think" that's a bit more accurate, but the class may be wrong too.

Ah ha! Caught you PaxMondo! Technically speaking, wouldn't subs go winchester torps, and bingo fuel?
