Yes, and they were full of fuel :)

The impact is limiting how many simultaneous actions he can do. We can handle two concurrently, more than that and our ability to deal with them rapidly drops off.

Having said that their are lots out there, and the impact is more one of efficiency and speed, than of absolutely stopping him.

Cheers

Rob

Any turn that begins with the headline "convoy slaughtered" is a good turn. That's a LOT of merchies you two have sunk throughout the course of the game. That objective from way back seems to be on track. What cumulative impact on enemy assault shipping do y'all estimate?

Our damaged CVE is limping home, damage has stabilised.

The rest of the CV force is roaming off the SW of Oz, but needs to head back soon.

Here is Nth Oz, planning to take Carnarvon shortly, but only to provide early warning. Building up Port Hedland and Broome.

Katherine will be built to level 2, and dug in, but otherwise the nth is fairly lightly held, mainly anough to give us early warning so we can react in reinforcements.

The main line of resistance will be the DEI Islands, but the longer we can keep them away from them the better prepared we can be.

Real life has impacted on the AAR, although we are still doing turns, so here is a quick update, it has been fairly quiet.

10 Oct - 23 Oct 1942

Indicators and Warnings
Allied airpower is significant in Burma dn Nth Oz. Both feature 4E bombers and a lot of fighters. 2E appear to mostly be in Burma, where B25 are appearing in numbers, although they are probably also in Oz.

Likewise ground forces are mostly in Burma and Oz. In Burma the 6th Oz div, 4th, 5th Uk and 26th Ind Bde are at Warzup, along with mountain gun units. Some recon units are probing elsewhere.

In Oz large armoured forces have advanced up the centre of Oz, and now occypy Daly waters. NE Oz is full of units.

The Brit CV's are raiding in the IO.

Convoys are mostly coming from the US to Oz.

Subs
Enemy subs have been very active, in paricular on the line of communications to Burma. We have lost a number of small ehips but nothing significant.

Our subs are being hurt by increasingly effective Allied ASW, in particular off the Oz East Coast and around Ceylon.

Burma
Several large airbattles have resulted in losses of around 1:1. They have around 60-80 B-17/B-24 and up to 150 mediums hitting our ground forces at Warzup, or the air base at Myitkyina. This focus in the nth has allowed the increasing number of eng units dig in the rest of Burma un hindered.Overall there is air parity

We have bought in 3 additional Divs (1 from Oz, 2 from China) and 3 garrison units, as well as more eng. Supply is flowing in, but barely making it to Warzup in the far nth. We are hoping Andrew attacks at Warzup, gets hurt hard, and then we will counter attack with around 6 Divs.

Chinese forces are making noise on the border, but we aren't worried.

DEI
Digging in continues, supply is being shipped to Burma.

Merauke is now a great base and holds the straits. Elsewhere we are digging in forming 3 defensive lines, although there are large gaps.

OZ
We hold the nth coast, but mostly concentrated in Darwin, with an outpost at Katherine. Andrew has been using unescorted 4E bombers, and we have managed a trickle of casulties.

Broome and Port Hedland are in our control.

Mini KB is off the WA coast, we destroyed one convoy here a few weeks ago. This netted xAk full of fuel.

We managed to hit Portland Roads with a bombardment force, killing some PT's and a few planes on the ground. He now has a strong SCTF protecting the base. The other key Oz ports are full of ships, troops and planes... we have plans...

He has a number of ASW forces operating off the coast.

Pacific
KB is split in two and is off raiding. Part is behind PH and is know to the enemy, this is keeping his ships in port and delaying reinforcements to Oz.

The other part is off NZ, effectively severing Oz from reinforcements... not sure if Andrew knows it is there or not.

Otherwise we are digging in. The SWPAC area is very strong. Centpac is weaker, but we have a series of strong points holding the axis to Truk.

China
We have halted the planned attack in sth China as intel gave us away, and we needed forces for Burma. In the air he has gotten stronger recently, but so have we and thanks to the 200 Tojo we are making a month the forces in China all have Oscar 1c and we are sweeping the enemy from the skies.

We are shipping out lots of resources, and bringing in supply.

Economics
Overall going good. Maintaining oil/fuel supplies in Japan, increasing resources and shipping a fair bit of supply out.

Our air production is going well, so far Tojo IIc and A6M5 are forward four months. We epect to have both of them arrive around Mar/Apr 1943.

Aircraft numbers are pretty good, but we are really struggling to produce enough good quality (70 air, 60 defensive) pilots. After big losses slightly lower quality sometimes have to be drawn forward.

Overall

With an intact KB we are doing well, are still well forward of where we expected to be, which is allowing us to dig in the third lines of defence.

The loss of all those TK's will really have an impact for several months, shipping fuel is the biggest logistic problem for the Allies, especially when they are trying to operate out of Oz.

Work/Life/Game Balance all upset, been doing turns just but not getting to the AAR, so here is an Update.

25 Oct - 6 Nov 1942
Indicators and Warnings
No real change. Andrews focus appears Burma and Nth australia based on the masses of units and aircraft in each location. We suspect he is creeping up in Norpac, but we basically aren't bothering there, instead are digging in the Kuriles. Nothing much happening in the CENTPAC.

Apart from Burma we expect a push in either the SWPAC of SOPAC based out of Oz.

Subs
His subs are becoming incresingly active and effective. We have lost some PB and small xAK. No TK lost yet, but it is only a matter of time. Our air is supressing them, and we have lots of ASW forces, but damage to them is minimal. A turn or two ago Akagi escaped a near miss off Noumea.

In return our subs are being hammered by increasingly effective Allied ASW. We are still getting some nice targets though, including the odd TK. But we have lost 4 subs in a month.

Burma
Their was breief battle at Warzup, Andrew conducted an Arty attack, found that the AV was about equal, and now appears to be pulling back. Elswhere he is probing with units along the border, but none of them have enough strength to really concern us yet.

In the air we continue to have air parity. Bothe sides medium forces have been hammered at times. Ours is now back in action after loosing a lot of planes (but few pilots) supporting the ground forces at Warzup.

Our fighters are playing the shell game and generally wining. We have about 350 Tojo and 70 A6M3 operating in Burma. We are fighting over our own ground, so loose aircraft but not many pilots.

At the moment Andrew has the initiative in Burma, we are in counter mode. None of our bases are currently closed. We are digging in nicely and will soon start the Burma final Defensive line on the Thai border.

Our current plans are to try and smash isolated allied units, we managed that last turn:

Ground combat at 61,41 (near Imphal)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 13560 troops, 125 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 464

Defending force 895 troops, 12 guns, 58 vehicles, Assault Value = 32

Japanese adjusted assault: 200

Allied adjusted defense: 4

Japanese assault odds: 50 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-)
experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: leaders(-)

Japanese ground losses:
34 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
120 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 8 destroyed, 16 disabled
Engineers: 22 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 12 (9 destroyed, 3 disabled)
Vehicles lost 30 (11 destroyed, 19 disabled)
Units retreated 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
18th Division

Defending units:
2nd Recce Regiment

He has sortied his Brit CV force a few time, once hitting a convoy unloading at Sabang, but overall they are being kept back... we would like to hit and trap them.

DEI
We are digging in. At Sabang we are finally starting to get some combat and air power in place.

Sumatra has the key strong points in place, but air support is at a premiu... but not too muc of a problem as we have few aircraft to base there!

Java is in better shape.

In the Eastern Island Timor, Kendari, Ambon, Boela, Samulaki and Merauke are all nicely dug in facing the threat from Nth Oz. But there is a big gap between Timor and Java. We are accepting this as he has no CV's available to support a move in this direction.

OZ

In Nth Oz we have retreated back to Darwin, with an outpost at Katherine. He has 11 units (lots of armour, including US) at Daly waters. We are keeping Daly waters damaged just... but the tipping point is close. We aim to hold Darwin as long as possible, otherwise Merauke becomes unhinged.

Well south of Perth Mini KB is currently chasing down an empty "starburst" cobvoy. We have sunk 3-4 of ethe 10 + ships so far.

On the East Coast we occasionally sweep bases like Portland Roads, using large numbers of Zero, and generally achieveing good kill/loss ratios (2:1).

We recently probed the area near Brisbane to try and kill some ASW forces, but a sub found us (almost putting a torp into Akagi) and so we are moving back to upgrade, refuel, rearm and plan a daring massed strike....

Pacific
After circumnavigating PH, and getting no kills, part of KB is heading back.

We see an ocasional convoy to places like Canton Is. But no real action.

Our bases are nicely supplied and dug in in a series of strong points.

We still hold the Samoa, Fiji, Ne Caledonia.

Tulagi and Lunga are nucely defended.

Rabaul is one megga base, with Umboi, Finschaven and Long Island a trio of mega bases that are guarding the area.

PM is undamaged and in our hands.

China
We are probing towards Sian and in the south. But lack the combat power at the moment.

Overall we are in a very strong position. All CV's intact, land based air largely in Tojo/A6M3+.

Logistics are good and slowly improving. We have around 100 days of reserve form the Japanese economy. Supply is probably our biggest constraint, but is overall OK with enough in the right areas for offensive as well as defensive operations.

Air reserach is bringing forward A6M5 and Tojo IIc about two months every month. They will be online in early 1943.

Frank is starting to move forward as well, and George should follow.

Tony has just headed overase for three weeks to gather material for his Belly Dancer Navel Fluff collection. It is quite extensive and features navel fluff from dancing girls from all over the world. He hopes to add Spain to this list this trip.

So I get to run the war, simple job, just been told not to loose the CV's....

So planning for a massed CV strike is underway... so many targets....

Catching up.

Here is air production as at 1 Nov. Tojo IIC and A6M5 have rapdily progressed and are coming forward about twice every month. Frank has started to come forward as well, and George should follow.

Engines are in very good shape, all are positive, but soon we need to ramp up the Ha-45, probably converting a Ha-35 factory over as we have a big surplus there.

9 Nov 1942 Lots of action in Burma!

Indicators and Warnings

Subs

Burma
We LRCAP the 18th Div, and Andrew strikes Rangoon wher I had forgotten about some subs in port :(

Overall we loose more aircraft, almost 40 Tojo, but only 6 pilots. We get a few of the four engine beasts. This is about as good as we can manage air wise... which ain't looking so good! Despite the large numbers of our aircraft report most are "out of immediate contact" so we don't get as good a mass as we hoped.

The fight over the 18th Div first.

Cribtop yes, very untidy :(

We have been cranking through the turns, in part because things are faily quiet, so I'll do a bulk update.

10-13 Nov 1942

Indicators and Warnings
In Burma Andrew pulls back from Warzup, and his aircraft have largely also pulled back. I expect him to come again soon, probably via the coastal route this time.

Oz sees a heavy commitment of forces still.

New Caledonia is being agressively reconed, and the approachs probedby shipping.

Subs
Lots of action, but few hits. Keeping the convoys safe is almost a full time job, they prefer to wander off into the deep water where our ASW isineffective. At least when they are attacked in shallow water our ASW gets a shot.

Burma
We return to bombing Akyab, which is now a level 4 airfield. Andrew has pulled back in the nth and centre, but is probing out from Akyab. We are reorienting forces, andcontinuing to dig dig dig.

DEI
Our focus is still the approaches out from Nth Oz, and in Nth Sumatra. Alsobuilding the port at Oosthaven to pull out resources.

We are assembling a naval strike force...

OZ
Our transports are off Carnavon, waiting for Mini KB to arrive in support.

We continue to supress Daly waters, P38 incercept on one mission, but Andrew can't generate the mass and our escorting fighters keep them away from the bombers.

Darwin is digging in, but I think we also need to increase the airfield to 5 to host the aircraft we need. A radar equipped AA Regt from Japan has arrived, with more engineers and supply.

We continue to hit Horn Island. It will be a good scrap mine after the war.

Pacific
We are currently chaisng some potential raiders with KB...

The fleet is mostly at home at Truk, need more fuel (which is inbound).

More forces arrive around Rangoon, need more supply.

Kavieng is now being developed.

Stepping forward supply and engineers at Port Moresby in preperation for a raid...

China
We crack the southern defences and are now one hex out frm the rail ine at Kweillen. Andrew is rushing forces that way, and we are about to probe and cut the line near Changsha.

Cheers

Rob

Burma 14 Nov 1942
We have repulsed a 1000AV attack on Warzup, and are now digging in there nicely. Forces are thining out and concentrating back in the centre.

Central Burma is one large airbase :) well 4 actually. Mandalay is 6 Afld and 5.5 forts, with the others a step or two behind.

Toungoo is our major base, 7 Afld and 4.5 forts.

We are trying to push back the probing forces, the 18th Div threw back the 2nd Recon Regt near Imphal, and is now retiring back to the rail line in great shape.

We have about 8-9 Divisional equivlants in Burma now, with a 1000AV of that available to move around.

I'm tempted to push over the Chinese border...

We have about 300 Tojo and 100 Zero in the theatre, with about 120 bombers (another 50 are doing ASW).

Port Blair has about 50 G3M3 Nell and an Emily unit which covers the approaches nicely.

Sumatra/Malaya
Sabang, Victoria Point and Geoarge town are the main airbases, with the former having an air strike group of Zero, G3M3 and Helen IIa (low naval). The later two only have ASW forces.

Sabang and Geoarge town are the only significant garrisons.

Andrew probes this way with his CV's trying to get into the coastal shipping...bastard!

On Malaya at 1 and 2 we are digging in the future defence of Malaya lines.

14 Nov 1942 Oz SWPAC

This area is interlinked, so shown in one image.

Merauke is Key Terrain that is closing the sea line to Darwin, and the east DEI. It is a level 4 Afld and 4.6 Fort with 200 AV. We want to hold this as long as possible. To do this we need to keep Horn Is supressed, and Darwain in our hands/neutralised...

Darwin is 4 Afld and 3.6 forts with about 800 AV. We want to hold this as long as possible as it is a pre-requisite for any Allied actions in this part of the world.

Behind (and off screen) Samulaki and Timor are the next lines, they are well dug in (4-5)and have decent airfields 4-5. Samulaki is a key base with AKE and fuel, it stages aircraft as required.

Two large SCTF are being developed in this area.

Port Morseby is 3 Afld and 4.5 forts with about 250AV. It is supplied through Buna 1 port 2 Afld, 3 forts.

The key though is the grouping of three mega bases, Finshaven (2 Port, 6 Afld, 5.1 Fort), Umboi (2 Port, 8 Afld, 5.5 Fort) and Long Island (1 Port, 6 Afld, 4 fort). Form here we can dominate the approaches (we hope!) through the gap and onto Papua New Guinea.

Rabaul (7 Port, 9 Afld, 6 Fort) is the main base with reserve forces and lots of air.

The enemy are advancing up central Oz (Daly waters is their formost based, currently trashed), with large airbases, lots of units and fighters at Portland Roads, with the other northen town equally built up.

14 Nov 1942 China
Haiphong is our main shipping point for fuel and resources from the DEI. It is a 9 Port, 6 afld and 4 fort. We have developed the afld nth of there on the border to intercept enemy transport aircraft (shown dotted line).

We have a fair thrust going in towards Kweilin with the aim of cutting the rail line. This has draw Andrews reinforcements, so we are going to move against the hex West of Changsha with about 2000 AV.

Both thrusts are getting a fair bit of air support. The Chinese airforce was decimated in the air and on the ground about 3-4 weeks ago and is offering no resistance at the moment. Andrew may deploy US fighters here... good as it will chew up Chinese supply :)

In the top right we are manouvering around Nanyang... but not getting very far at the moment.

After looking around at options I have increased heavy industry production in Sorebaya. This should make Java a good positive supply source for the DEI in the long run, even when this area becomes isolated.

The other options were Malaya/Indo China, which are likely to become over run before Sorebaya. Plus there is plenty of spare fuel and resources in the Java area.

We find that the 46th Indian Bde is by itself in the Jungle near Akyab... if I can get a div to it...

On the China border he has detected my troop building up and is pulling back, this is good as if we can get into the mountains to dig in that border will be much more secure.

DEI

OZ
P38 lightly contest our air attacks on Daly Waters, am going to sweep with Zero next turn...
