Houserules:


No 4E on naval attack below 10k ft
No new Allied TF on turn 1, China free to move and fight


maybe more will come when we are in the game........

Status: offline 		As we wait for 3.4 and discuss HR and various strategies, can i take this opportunity to invite various Allied Chiefs and indeed IJ chiefs to wade in with advice.

Having read Johns breakdown of the boosts for the Japanese it appears its going to be a very rough ride til mid 43 - what i would ask the IJ chiefs is 'what would be the worst scenario for you'? Fortress Palembang, Fortress Java? A sturdy defence of Malaya and the PI? i know personally i would be thrown off balance by a well planned and well fortified defence of Palembang

were going to request no Mersing - this steers the Allies to K Baru and Kuantan giving us a bit of breathing space at the back of Sumatra (west) and weve discussed shipping the preloaded convoys in India to either the west coast of Sumatra or Java, maybe the 18th div too and anything thing else we can get there in a hurry - my own personal thought is its not about a victory here but to make him bleed for every hex - what he loses now hes lost forever - we get brand new shiny stuff

Status: offline 		My understanding is that in RA the IJF have less resources (oil/fuel/supply) than the standard scenario 1. As soon as possible the IJF MUST come for the oil centres or he will be short - it is now i wish there was a 'sabotage' option and we could just blow Palembang, Medan, Balikpapan, Miri and the Chinese fields on turn 1, then retire to Hawaii and wait for the surrender.

One of the wonders of the game is psyching out the enemy and planning to work out where hes going next and what with - the oil fields are that important in RA we have a major advantage in knowing he must come for them ASAP. That leads me to believe we must build up, defend and prep Palambang asap. We can fly Dutch units from Sumatra, ship in CD guns from OZ and then the pre loaded convoys can come down the channel - the good thing about it all is he can only really attack at PBang, Oosthaven or Benkolen - everywhere else is too small - i think we mine and guard these bases as much as possible.

Depending on where the KB and its many minions end up i would like to consider a move into the Pacific to totally unbalance our foes plans, and take immediately the fight to him.

Status: offline 		The most important thing for them is to secure the resource areas in the DEI....therefore our most important goal must be to bring as much opposition up at those targets as possible - we hope that with enough engineers at some of the targets our sappers will blow up things

Dan's success over in his Campaign has scarred the tar out of me. Palembang is on the 'to grab by Dec 20th' list in any campaign I play in from now on. Did this in both my RA 2.0 (Lew) and my RA 3.0 (Bill). If you guys are going to do this you'll have to be fast. It is every JFB nightmare to see Palembang a smoking ruin after taking it.

Glad about Mersing. HATE gamey opening moves and that is one of the biggest. Hope your opponents keep it under control for the 'Warp Speed' opening turn.

The DEI must be grabbed quickly in this Scenario. The Japanese have less of everything to run their economy so DEI has to be brutal and quick, therefore, I'd advise fighting for every square inch. Anything you sink, shot down, or damage cannot be easily replaced. Your stuff can and will be...

i think this is a direct quote from my discussions with Swift - anything and everything should be thrown at the IJA/N in the DEI particularly Palembang - in my last 3 PBEMS of stock i have taken it by the 12th because 'i should', i never really looked that deeply into 'i MUST'! and RA makes it even more important. Itll be a race for sure but we should be able to get stuff in there fairly quick depending on where the carriers go

we will go with very limited houserules (at least at the game start):

-no invasion on non dot hexes
-no Mersing invasion of turn 1
-no 4Es below 10,000 on nav attack
-no new Allied TFs on turn 1
-no landings west of Singapore on turn 1

What do we have at the turn 1 to tinker around with:

lots of TFs !

TF 406 is between Johnston and Frech Frigate Shoal with CV Enterprise, CAs Northhampton, Chester, Salt Lake City and 9 DDs
TF 405 is near Pago Pago with CV Lexington, CAs Portland, Chicago, Astoria, Minneapolis and 9 DDs

These are our firebrigade in the Pacific, we are still discussing about there first orders......there are several options!

TF 404 is at Cebu with the Scourge of the Seas - the CL Marblehead
TF 409 is at Johnston with the CA Indianapolis and 5 DMS

TF 413 is at Oosthaven with the CK Java and 2 DDs
TF 414 is near Batavia with the CL Tromp
TF 420 Force Z starts at Singapore wit the BB PoW, the BC repulse and 4 DDs

TF 433 is at Hong Kong with 3 DDs
TF 434 and 435 are the two PT squadrons of the Dutch Navy (12 PTs)

Status: offline 		The TF at Canton, Pago Pago, and Townsville provide a great opportunity to reinforce one or two locations fairly quickly in the South Pacific. There are enough CAs, CLs, and DDs down here to make a couple of fairly strong STF as well. Lexington TF gives you some potential punch!

Don't forget there are additional aircraft in this area to. That Squadron of P-40s and Vindicators at Pago Pago as well as the Aussie Squadrons either on the TF at Townsville or able to be loaded there at Townsville.

Notice that you have an operational SS Base at Pago Pago with (I think) 4 S-Boats. Bill has used the additional S-Boats (plus the pair near Wake) to cause all sorts of havoc in our game. HATE those boats!

Status: offline 		i may have to spend some time talking Swift round, but if the KB and its many flat topped minions depart the Pacific to attack Manilla, Singapore and the DEI im very inclined to scoop up some decent troops and start harrassing islands they would think untouchable until 43 - im looking at Roi Namur, poss Saipan to cut his supply lines but be far enough away to remain out of harms reach - he would have to pull the CVs back and then we can fortify PBang at out leisure

This is a really nice and strong force.

What else do we have after turn 1 (or not....depends what and where the Japanese will strike)

PI: 27 at Manila (Most Japanese will strike here as hard as possible, so we can not count on these subs )
Pago Pago: 4 (this is a nice plus in RA - those can be very dangerous subs - all old S class)

good old Hermes is in Ceylon
and the Lexington is at SF

And we also have a nice mining fleet:

8 DM

And there are also a few Patrol boats around (12 at PH and 9 at Manila)


And now the important ships: Tenders.....we need those....so those will be evacuated from combat zones (if possible)
We will get many more tender during the war....but we only have few to loose, and those we might loose are in the PI and DEI.....

Will the chinese transports not need buying out?

Status: offline 		Yes, but you can move them to the free Chinese air command for 12 pts.  They do make a difference and you can move them on turn 1.  They move alot of stuff with the Dutch Lodsters.

That´s the question!
Ahhh....not really - All of the Sub Operations are in One hand, all of the backyard duties are in one hand..........but in the DEI/PI/Malaya it will be a joint operation for the first few weeks (hopefully months in that area)

We have made a bunch of Warplans with 100s of pre-planed Operations for nearly everything , and during our discussions we saw that undercovergeek is the ever opptimistic go-for-it-all type(before this PBEM he only played the Japanese side - and he really believes the Jap Fan Boy propaganda of the allmighty Allied forces!).
This provided me with lots of INTEL about the Japanese thinking (I am more or less a pure Allied player in Witp AE), and we were able to think....and even test a few nasty surprises for the Japs!

Status: offline 		Well, that didnt quite go as expected!!

Turn 1 is in, Pearl is untouched, Battleship Row still there, Swift and I's carefully laid out plans for intercepting the KB lying in ruins!!

Of the 3 KBs - the 2 main ones appear to be off North East Borneo and they have flattened Manilla's port along with the usual Formosa attacks. The other appears to be stood off Hong Kong and has sunk a number of transports there.

Other than the presence of the KBs here no real surprises occurred - Kota Bharu invaded, Georgetown squashed. The highlight of the turn was Swift's departing DDs from Hong Kong intercepting 5 TKs and 3 APs - the report shows none sunk but all heavily damaged - but this does lead me to one thought - this was the first attack of the war! Without a Pearl attack to open proceedings the first shots in anger were allied - did we start the war in the Pacific?

Our plans continue - all availble infantry is being flown into Palembang, and now its turn 2 ships will also start bringing in the troops - the presence of the KBs clearly demonstrate our opponents desire to get the DEI secure and sealed ASAP - we'll have to see about that.

And now that the Pacific is empty of flat tops i can appeal to Swift to let us try and take some islands from the Japanese!!! For me personally as a JFB i know how fragile and vastly important the resources are around the Home Islands, my plan would be to move through the Kuriles or just head straight there (!) to the unoccupied Japanese islands that would put us in striking distance of Sakhalin and attack the shipping there, and then some islands near Kwajelein, and then reoccupy Malaya, and then, and then, and...............

Status: offline 		I would try to get the Pioneer/Engineer unit at Singapore over to Palembang to start digging in.

I like to send 3 or 4 PBY groups from Pearl over to the SRA. They can be used to both conduct Naval Search and/or transport troops. 2 PBYs end up in India eventually (usually for me, its the ones from Manila) as India is short on search planes and those little 6 planes Catalina are not enough.

Upgrade most of your Dutch FPs to PBY-5s. They will be very useful.

I always place one of those 18 plane Marine fighter groups on each of my American CVs. You can never have enough fighters on them.

Status: offline 		Turn 2 done and replay watched - the immense amount of work on turn two has been completed with all the compulsory management taking place.

Troops and ships are gathering at Kodiak before sailing out to build Adak - the first step on the ladder of the destruction of Sakhalin. The BBs are heading home from Pearl to be upgraded.

All the action is focused on Malaya, Borneo and the PI. Landings have occurred at Kuching, and i suspect this will be built up to a large airfield. Kota Bharu has fallen - Swift very wisely decided to leave the landing forces unmolested by force Z - the absence of Netties in the skies leads us to believe this is exactly what they were waiting for. Troops and supplies head south to Singapore for immediate evac to Palembang. Those troops that are unrestricted and can already leave are boarding ships to head for Palembang and the air transport armada continues to bring in outlying infantry. Small TFs are also built to bring in more infantry but the enemy has a lot of the shipping lanes under careful watch with his subs already - there must be more and closer to their targets in RA.

The landing at PI has not increased or expanded - all local infantry and armour is being sent here to throw them back in the sea - i personally suspect a division strength and another unit - we'll see

The KB seems to have grown and split more - 2 CLs were lost off Singkawang to one element, there is still an element off Hong Kong and now one near Davao that is clearly there to catch escaping shipping - all evac units will now head east, rendevous and then come south away from the PI. There is also a TF sighted with CVLs near Rabaul too!

All in all a 'routine' turn, the surprises being the Vildebeests sinking at least 2 ships of the Kota Bharu landing force, and a successful IJN sub attack right off the US coast, 15 minutes after i had just guaranteed Swift it couldnt happen - damn the new RA subs!!

Various TFs are rendevouzing in Kodiak to start building up Adak to be used as a springboard for taking one of the 'Jimas' near Sakhalin.

Heads of forces are convening to discuss a grand plan for the Pacific - there are many KBs around Borneo and the Pacific is ripe for the picking - what and where is to be decided.

Quiet across the map until the PI - fortunately for the enemy their overwhelming local numbers caused the base to turn Japanese without an attack, giving the troops an extra day to prep and move on, and move on they have - the march arrow indicates they are heading already to Manilla! The allies are already marching south east to meet their attack however, but set off a day earlier - with any luck and some ground bombing from the B17s we can slow their march, get to their hex before they leave and attack them whilst theyre still in the wrong combat mode.

TFs are heading south to aparri and Vigan, it would appear this is their next point of arrival.

TFs are leaving Manilla and heading east then south, this should be safe enough now that part of the main KB has headed west to support the Kuching ops.

About 1000 men a day are being flown in to Palembang from all around the DEI, and the shipping also is arriving in the right bases to take away the small units collected here. Forces are on the trains heading to Batavia from Soerbaja for the short hop to Oosthaven. Subs have arrived in Batavia to be loaded with mines, and they can accompany the mine TFs leaving the area this turn.

In other areas, transport TFs are making their slow progress through Malaccan straits and we hope to have them land in Palembang soon. The AVG is making its way into the area and the forces that started on transports to begin with are heading towards Sumatra.............

Status: offline 		Commodore Swift just wanted to visit the Sultan of Brunei (Birthday of one of his many sons) and doing so he also would have the opportunity to meet his old friend Lord Carruthers (who may become First Sealord in the near future).

Because of his background in the intelligence community and from his visit in Nippon in early 41, he was aware of the possibility of an massive Japanese all out attack in the DEI.

He was in close contact with an Australian Captain who wants to build up something like a "sea watcher" organisation....he had the idea to give various people radios and charts, and they would report shipping and maybe aircraft.

Swift had told his communication officer MacAllan of this "opportunity" and told him to watch the frequencies very close.


In the early morning hours of Dec 7th MacAllan alerted Commodore Swift of massive reports from various sources. Commodore Swift ordered radio calls to all his intel assets and also to the Higher Commands in the Far East. Various assets - but none of the Higher Commands - reported back.



Now Commodore Swift ordered total radio sillence and blackout for his flottilia and asked MacAllan for radio surveillance and for a vector to the closest possible enemy contact. 20 minutes later the Flottilia was closing in on a possible hostile contact. It looks like a Japanese Cargo and Tanker fleet going to one of the many ports in the DEI or the former French Indochina Ports........but as far as Swift knows....te Dutch wont give them their oil and also the Commonwealth wont give them any oil......what the heck are they doing here running without any cargo.......


Now the radar crew reported huge masses of aircraft incoming....probably passing by.
As they came closer all crew on deck could see that those are Japanese combat aircraft.....and Swift saw that they carried a full load.

Suddenly MacAllen shouted - dozen of reports are incoming....possible Japanese landings all over the DEI and the Phillipine Islands..........

"rise the White Ensign!"


and so the war begins......

We awaited the usual PH strike and some surprises, but what they did really surprised us!
No PH strike........all subs around PH gone......but at least 4 carrier divisions in the DEI!
