nope, nothing to do with drinks and tiny Bikinis... I meant to ask... upgrade?

For instance some Australian militias upgrade to CMF squads and later to Australian '42 squads. It seems a significant amount of those outdated troops rot in the pool, when do those upgrade (if at all)? I believe no units on the map use this "device" anymore, or would use it but have been upgraded already to a later type.

Do I loose dated squads in the pools as I cannot use them as replacements on the map anymore?

They don't, believe me I wish they did. Unlike the japanese with their unlimited manpower having precious and limited allied squads wasting in the pools all war seems like a terrible oversight to me but what can we do.

When I was first learning the game I always tried to preserve my early war squad pools as much as possible, but now I try to use them up as fast as possible in the months leading up to major lcu upgrades. Like in india in the months leading up to the upgrade when most indian lcu switch from 41 to 42 or 43 squads I pretty much turn on all the lcu replacements that could use up the soon to be wasted indian squads. Or in OZ with the switch from cmf to (amf? I forget) I always try to use up as many cmfs as possible before they stop being usefull.

It always frustrates me with things like the canadian lcu squads where things are always so tight that those handful of early war squads doing nothing are enough to just about make you rage.

There's probably a rational for it that makes sense, but seeing those old squads teasing you in the pools is always frustrating.

Thats bad news...

Follow up question, as I have some LCUs with very old militia type squads that are to be removed from the theater. Do those squads go back to the pool or are devices that are withdrawn with these LCUs lost?

This way I could for instance spend some of my CMF squads in the pool and have them then upgraded to regular troops before they withdraw to the pool...

With one of the Betas an option was added that outdated squads slowly upgrade to the most recent one. To use this there is a game option which is on for all new games and for ongoing games the japanese player can activate it. It only helps the allied player but it changes the game play quite a bit so the japanese player has to allow it.

If it actually works, i do not know as my opponent does not want to turn it on. But i am still arguing with him about it. Can anyone confirm it working ?

I have not seen it and I am running the q beta. My old Chinese rifle squads have not upgraded to 43 Chinese. I have not noticed it with any other Nationality either but have been only really paying close attention to the Chinese. But perhaps you need six months after the patch and I don't think I have gotten there yet.

You need to turn on (can only be activated by japanese player in an ongoing PBEM, at least michaelm said so) ->

From Michael two months ago via PM.

quote:

Six months after the old device has stopped being available, with the convert option on, the old devices will automatically upgrade to the new one and add them to the pool. Conversion only applies to squad or engineer type devices.

It is done in a manner like with building - a random number are converted daily to the new device.

From memory, having those other devices (Cmf infantry) upgrade to AIF 42, should put the old devices back into the pool as new AIF 42??

I think the rate will not be greater than the rate you were getting them per month. Thus, if you were only getting 15 per month, only 15 per month max will convert.

This is one of those things where it's different in each example. Some LCU disband into the pools when withdrawn and some disappear completely (assumed to be going to other theaters of the war). I don't know of a way to tell beforehand which way they'll go so I tend to not upgrade or rebuild LCU that have withdrawal dates since I can't tell if my precious devices will be dispersing back into my pools or if some thieving ETO commander is going to get them.

With the exception of their squads that is. If the lcu is withdrawing later and has unupgraded squads I will usually try to get their squads to upgrade while trying to pull as few new other devices into the LCU as possible. That way if the lcu disbands then the squads that are going into the pools are upgraded squads that are actually useful, and if it removes itself entirely then nothing is lost but a few extra devices that may have gotten in while upgrading the squads.

Thanks Beppi, I would have never figured that one out.

In a vs AI game the Allied player (if human) can turn it on or off too.
