In India our men just started their advance towards Lahore. A strong force is left behind at Multan, along with 3 divisions on strat mode...ready to get back to Hyderabad or Karachi if any emergency arises...but Karachi has 9 forts and light urban hex...with 400 fighters and 670 bombers should be pretty safe... Rader keeps on keeping the bulk of his forces at Lahore...let's see how it plays out.

That's the spirit, Reek. Go Forth and see what the LYBs do. You're wise to watch for skuldrugery by those sneaky devils, but a push might do what CR suggested. At worse, it will be a good lesson for future games. At best, you might push the blighter into a wild, scambling retreat. Likely result is something inbeteen, but recoverying India is a pretty nice prize.

One more suggestion if I might before taking my leave : I agree that butting your head against the NG defenses might be folly, and bloody folly at that. Despite my well deserved reputation for enjoying bloodfests, I'd think it wiser to do what you are doing and plan for an alternative area of ops. Reek, one thing I think you need to be more conscious of is that planning is a huge part of controlling the Allied forces. If you use tracker, bravo. I wish I had the computer skills and time to master it. However, even a paper guy like me can get multiple actions in the planning phase well in advance of implementation. Then, once the first op starts, the next one is ready to go in immediately if the LYBs react to the first, then the third and soforth. These ops are ready....they may or may not go depending on the LYB reaction, but they usually do. Put the LYBs on the horns of a dilema on how to react (sometimes they do naught and my plans really work best than.

Again, just a suggestion. Enjoy this part of the game where you do offensive things to him rather than being the butt of the offensive joke. It is much more fun and I am sure you're enjoying giving the lash rather than constantly trying to heal the whelps on your back.

My master,

i agree with your suggestions. In fact i tried to plan the advance in the Solomons in the fashion you suggested. While my troops were getting ready for Thousands (then become Auki), others were prepping for Rekata and for Munda, and now i have units fully prepped for Chiuseul and Treasury Island...while the bulk of my forces is planning for a series of different little operation part of the bigger scope operation concerning northern Oz and our future advance towards SouthernDEI/ Western NG.

The real problem is to mass enough ships in order to accomplish more than one operation at time...the shortage in terms of APA/AKAs is really hurting me (my blame i used all those APs for that tragical operation at PM in Dec 1942...)...and Oz seems to be always short of fuel and supplies, no matter how much i ship there..

Anyway...we're on the move...in the last 6 months we have changed the tide and now our advance is becoming more consistent....and i feel confident!!

Jan 18, 19 1944

His night torpedo attacks continue over Tulagi.
During the last days the super fast Frances kept arriving to attack my ships...i dispatched a day corsairs squadron to night duties and they made the difference. My night fighters (Havocs and Venturas) are simply too slow to catch his bombers, while the corsairs, even without radars, at least score some hits. We managed to repulse a couple of attacks, while the ships AA did the rest...

While a great convoy is loading at Ndeni (with the whole II US Corp composed of 2 divisions, 2 tank BNs, 2 Artillery regiments and 2 Eng Regiments), we decided to get Panggoe with a paratroopers assault.
The paras were preceded by a huge air bombings of the enemy positions on the jungle island. 130 4Es and 90 2Es pounded the base and the troops, while the skies were granted empty by not less than 110 between Hellcats, Thunderbolts and Lightings. The japs decided (wisely) not to engage.
We really hit hard the enemies and when the C-47s arrived not a single AA gun shot at them....
Unfortunately there were enough forts there to give the defenders some breath and we obtained a 1-1 on the first day, with forts down to 1...
The second day, while bombers kept on pounding hard the enemies, our C-47s didn't fly...so our para units delivery was not completed and no supplies arrived to our men.... despite being outnumbered and without supplies (ammos) our brave paras managed to obtain another 1-1, bringing down the forts to 0....
Unfortuntaley the base wasn't taken on the first attempt and now we fear the japanese countermove.
Tomorrow our C-47s will try to bring in more supplies and to complete the troops delivery, while LRCAP and Sweep missions are ordered to 200 allied fighters.
Subs are moving there also in order to provide some cover for his naval bombings...

we hope to get the base tomorrow...it will be important...very important... in order to get a footstep into new Georgia so that to give a close cover to the invasion of Choiseul.

We also decided that it's time to eliminate the enemy presence at Tulagi.
In 4 days the equivalent of 3 divisions will attack the enemy pocket (those poor bastards are there starving and rotting since Jan 1943!!!...i bet the cannibalized themself!

In NG the statlemate continues...

Tomorrow our eastern army will exit multan, moving east towards Lahore...

Good news...

Panggoe is in our hands.

Rader sent a DD division to deal with our PTs at Rekata, sinking a lot of them (10) for no damage on his side...
Then his BBs, at night, came to Panggoe to bomb the trenches where our paras were spending their night.... the subs we placed on the coast did their job and SS Pampanito placed a fish in Hiei's Stomache...not a devastating hit but the ship will probably have to R&R for some time...our subs have dramatically encreased their efficiency lately...even in shallow waters!

However...the BBs pressed forwards and bombed the island...luckly our guys were well dispersed in the jungle and the damage was irrilevant...

Then, when the day came, Rader didn't dare to send his bombers, fearing of a CAP trap (smart boy!)...we dominated the skies and our C-47s delivered supplies and the rest of out para battallions... we then shock attacked and we conqeured the whole place, killing at least 2000 japanese!

Now we have Panggoe...we're really getting close...supplies and goods are flowing to Munda and soon i'll have 3 advanced bases from where to start reducing Bouganville strongpoint(Munda, Rekata and Panggoe).

In the meanwhile the II US Corp will tomorrow unload at Tulagi, in order to deal with what remains of the enemy invasion forces...then, the next step, is Rekata Bay!

Well done in the Solomons. Watch him in India. His latest moves seem odd, even random, but I smell he's up to something. He isn't countermarching there for no reason.

Umm... What kind of terrain is Panggoe? 5 bombarding battleships(including Yamato) against only infantry(6 battalions or so?) managed to score 60 casualties... lol

What's unusual about it? Dug in troops unseen in the jungle would be hard to hit, especially without good naval fire spotters in place. If the infantry unit were small, so much the harder. If the enemy ships were worried about getting in and getting out during nighttime hours, due to threat of air, and then one of the BBs took a torp from a sub, then the missions might well be cut short or cancelled.

I would think it much odder if Japanese ships on a "smash and dash" missions managed to tear apart an infantry unit in the jungle. It certainly didn't happen at Guadalcanal.

From this same AAR one can find reports of GreyJoy's own naval bombardment runs against Japanese islands where troops are behind forts(unlike the poor commandos who had just landed on the Japanese-held island that got bombarded by that 5-BB TF, and survived with 60 losses with no one squad destroyed in neither bombardment or the land action that followed). GreyJoy's typical bombardment TF seems to be 2 or 3 cruisers, and they usually get 10+ planes and 100+ Japs killed, easily... I dont think those commandos even had the 80mm DP guns the Japanese base forces have either.

Probably just an odd result.

NO, bombarding a well recce'd and heavily stacked airbase is far easier than an Infantry regiment in foxholes or using the natural terrain to their advantage. (Plus I think the FOW on bombardment of airbases exagerates by 200-500%)

Even the support troops at a base have to be reasonably close to the facilities or else they would be inefficient.

The difference is that when you bombed the enemy units at your own base results are owfull...i got the very same bad results when bombing his troops at Tulagi... The naval bombings are effective only when u bomb enemy bases (and the troops in them)

I know...but i still don't understand what he's up to...i really don't get it...the only reason i could think is that he has found a way to use the strange and terrible road system around multan against me...but i don't understand how!!!....yet...

Another sleepy turn...

Our II US Corp has arrived at Tulagi. Will attack the 22,000 japanese tomorrow, supported by the whole CV fleet and by 100 2Es that will bomb the bastards!

In India it seems that he's abbandoning Lahore...no more fighters present there... i keep advancing...very carefully....

Munda is growing fast, while support troops are enroute for Panggoe (base forces, Eng and CD units).... As soon as we wipe out what remains of the jap Tulagi invasion force, Tulagi will become our major naval base in the Solomons, with Ndeni as a backwater...

Aye, and do not be afraid to use shock attack next time. Helps a little bit to wipe out the remaining troops. I would not wait too long (to reduce fatigue of the own troops) just shock next turn. Hit them again a little bit with carriers and whatevery you have. But with the 189 squads killed i would not expect an adjusted AV of over 150 - 200. So shock clear the Hex and celibrate :)

We hit them again with a deliberate...and we destroyed 4 units...wiping out at least 6000 japanese...tomorrow the base will be clear and Tulagi will finally be liberated!

The news of the day is that Rader is evacuating everything up to Dehli...Jodpur...Lahore...Dehli too... no troops left...

We'll try to advance asap...Rader left a little unit of 180 men in front of Lahore...we'll bomb it to dust tomorrow and, while the chindits will be paradropped at Lahore and in the base south of it...4 divisions are ready to be strat moved there from Multan...

Don't really understand what Rader is up to...evacuating everything!?!?!?...well, we'll push forward...he cannot evacuate 500k men with a single naval trip...

Now i fear where Rader wants to place those 500k men that were garrisoning northern India....

In yellow the paradrops and the strat move planned...in red the advance of my Eastern Army... i think Rader simply wanted to gain some time...he called me to come out of Multan so that i could have not strat moved my whole army on his heels....

Reek, you see. It's one thing to take reasonable precautions in an advance, but it is entirely another thing to be a scaredy cat. Go Forth!

And good work on Tulagi. I understand the reason for the delay, but its a proud day to send those interlopers sent to visit their ancestors.

Call me fool but i don't get Rader's strategy.... He moved everything back to Kohima (northern Burma!!!!).... my paras conquered Lahore and Dehli, while our troops are strat moving to occupy these key positions... not a single air mission conducted by the japs to interdict my movements...

Seems that Rader wants to leave the whole India in my hands and move the whole front back to Burma...

Well...we keep on advancing.... now, while some tanks units will secure Ralpawindi and northern India, the bulk of my army is moving to Dehli, where we're gonna organize again and get ready for the next jump...

In The Solomons, we changed our strategy...we will unload our Invasion forces at Panggoe and we'll march to Chiuseul Bay....
We are moving seabees with barges from Rekata to Panggoe in order to start building the base and repair the damage...the KB attacked our barges and sunk nearly a whole Seabee regiment...suffering 20 planes shot down in the process, for no loss on our side...

Tulagi has been completely liberated...22,000 japanese have been killed and now Tulagi is happily becoming our main base in the region...

In NG our NewZelanders arrived at Terapo...emptied by the japs...we will conquer the base tomorrow and we'll start building it asap...

another sub lost in the DEI....to his dreaded air asw....

I recall somebody suggesting several weeks ago that once the Japanese retreat started in India it wouldn't stop until Calcutta and the line of bases from Kilimo to Ledo.

That's just a natural thing, because once an IJ player decides the jig is up, he faces the daunting task of having enough shipping to evacuate hundreds of thousands of troops. That takes alot of shipping and therefore alot of time. The IJ player therefore becomes a victim of the yips - his imagination playinc havoc with him as he imagines his massive army getting isolated and then destroyed.

In that situation, the Allied player only need create the appearance of threat to "feed" the stampede and get it going even quicker.

Yup CR, you were right!

My point is that Rader didn't need to do that...not in these proportion... Multan was a strong point...he could have bottled me there forever...at least untill i had a massive force of B-29s to smash his AF there no matter what kind of opposition... My estimate is that Rader could have hold multan well untill late 44...
Now, under the present conditions, India will be ours within the end of Feb...and Intel tells me that at Scoodra and Diego there are still heavy japanese forces...that will remain isolated... really uncomprehensible for me.

Moreover...why abbandon Indian HI? Why expose the Burma Oilfields to my 4Es?...

Also i don't think anymore that this is a trap...really nothing is left north of Cowpore...and even from there his troops are leaving...I reconned Bombay the last turn... 10 units...there were 20... and those 10 are also moving (arrows)...

Within the next turn we'll be at Dehli with 2000 AVs...

Now my concern is that part of those 500k men will be moved by Rader to DEI...and i'm pretty sure it's gonna be a harsh fight for southern DEI and to accomplish my plans in Northern Oz (Darwin) and Ambon area...

But hey, the fact that India is an open theatre again is a GREAT news!!!!! one year and a half of occupation...and now, finally we can celebrate our freedom again!

I think Rader may be responding to the clock. He sees that the game's into '44 already & in 11 short months it will be '45. He has experience in his other game playing against the late war allies & knows what they can do. So he feels uncomfortable leaving a large # of troops in a forward position that could get flanked. Therefore he's consolidating his position.

Just my guess at what he's thinking. Of course there's also a chance that there could be some sort of ruse involved.

It's not a trap.  He's stampeding for the rear, though "stamped" is probably too strong a word to use, for the stampede is intentional and controlled.

He's going to reconfigure his lines and attend to perceived weak points.  He'll establish a strong line in Burma, Malaya, and Sumatra, and then place the balance of his troops at central interior locations as a rapid response force to deal with any Allied attacks.

If your house rules or political points aren't a problem, you can flood Burma overland and probably wage a successful campaign there.  But what about the balance of your army in India?  Where do they go?  Do you try to open a new front by invading somewhere, or do you need to begin a quick transfer of troops to Aden and thence East Coast and thence West Coast.

Decide if you want a major commitment of troops to the Pacific.  If so, get the logistical train underway ASAP.

Yes, in a certain way i think you're right...his other game seems to be influencing his moves a lot!

Well, is this phsyicological effect is going to help my advance...so good!

Here's a situation map in NG and Solomons...

No, CR, i've already thought about that. My Eastern Army will remain in India. Will liberate India first and then will try to push for Burma. I want him to remain committed there so that the americans can have a chance in Southern DEI and north western NG...

Anyway, we have HR for crossing borders... i need to change the HQ to move restricted command LCUs out of India...but the Army which will be able to move is strong enough i think...something like 7500 AVs...i haven't moved any units to the pacific or Oz, so everything i got, plus the emergency reinforcements, is available!

That's why I said "if your house rules and political points" aren't a problem.

Are you sure you want to commit to a Burma campaign?  In the first place, you're not going to tie down the bulk of his army.  You'll end up commiting more to that campaign than he will.  So if that is your objective, you've lost the battle long before it even begins.

You can win in Burma, but to do so you have to commit far more than he will, and it wil take you at least a year.  Do you want to still be fighting in Burma come New Year's Day 1945?

Vis the situation in India at the moment, you can win the grand strategic battle only by quickly invading someplace before rader can reinforce (and I don't think you have the shipping or the firepower to do this) or by switching targets to the Pacific and moving so fast that you get ahead of him.  It will take him a LONG time to retrieve his fast India army and get it into the Pacific.  You can get ahead of him if you expeditiously move yours via strat movement to Aden then East Coast then West Coast, and then set up the shipping to invade him in overwhelming numbers somewhere he isn't expecting the onslaught.  NOPac would be my first idea, but there are others.

Once you commit to moving east, this chance is lost.  So mull over your options now, before committing to any course of action that will tie you down for the balance of the war.

I get your point CR...however it's too late now to change all my plans back again. My shippings are getting ready for the Northern Oz operation and my troops are moving there too...the idea to open a third front in the pacific is way beyond my capabilities right now...and i don't wanna strip too much from India...wanna keep Rader busy in Burma so that he cannot move everything to SRA and DEI....the whole indian effort will simply be a way to keep him busy there in order to give my marines a chance to get a foothold in southern DEI.
