We've deployed the first Jack 2M3s - 4x 20mm guns and service level of 2.
This is a nice improvement of the previous model with 2x20mm, 2x7,9mm and service rating of 3.

The Central Burma Army has almost completed its shift to Chiang Mai as shown on the screen below.
There's a tank regiment left in Central Burma, a Tank Bde plus 10 support units still moving towards Chiang Mai.
With these reserves total Theatre strength Malaya - Burma now stands at around 10k AV.

Suddenly the Tony d displayed bomb load...strange.

It might depend on where you looked. When editing a scenario, you can have a plane be one way, but the specific instance of that plane in a specific unit be another way. That little quirk gives scenario designers the ability to, for example, have a certain fighter get a potential bomb load for ground attack, but give a single squadron no such bomb load because it was forward deployed at war's outbreak and did not historically have the equipment.

I am not saying for sure that is the case with the Tony D, but it is one possibility for what you saw. It could also be an error where a change was made to the plane but not propagated to the group that had been equipped with the plane before the change was made.

In any event, if a unit has what you consider to be the 'wrong' version and the planes in the pool have what you consider to be the 'right' version, you can probably fix that by upgrading to another model and then upgrade right back to the Tony D.

Could be so Witpqs! I put the Tony's on naval attack training now...perhaps that triggered the bomb orndance.

Got a nice snack for you
When I first spotted activity in the Coral Sea around a week ago the Combined Fleet was just SSW of the Marianas enroute to Manila to replenish.
Parts of the fleet had already split of to undergo upgrades in Manila, this included 5 heavy cruisers and the carrier Junyu.

The rest of the fleet was running low on fuel and I had to make a difficult decision; RTB or move towards the Coral Sea.
Sine the Fleet was restless for combat after the abortive mission to the Line Islands it was decided to act.

So we moved west of Truk, replenished from our supply train that raced down from the Marianas, continued east of Rabaul and yesterday a last leg
of 8-9 hexes was lined up to bring the fleet within range. I was afraid we just would miss the train; I had to split off 40% of the fleet that was running low on fuel, so this half
travelled 1 hex shorted than the main fleet.

I was also correct in my estimate; Andy just "lept in" - dumped another division and lept out again.
A surface combat TF just missed the last ships leaving after an MTP had succeeded in sinling an LST.

At extreme range, 7-8 hexes the enemy fleets were spotted and the airborne Samurais' immediately went to work!
The enemy main fleets was spotted at 8 hexes so the Judy nerf immediately cost us and only our Jills could attack them, we still got in 2 nice strikes with over 200 bombers.
A smaller fleet was spotted 1 hex closer so our Judy's also got something to work on.

Results could have been even greater with Judy's but we could also have missed the train completely - another close call, take a look for yourself!

thats excellent strike!

Well, Andy actually killed his men and sink his ships by himself. Sending invasion TF without CV cover while he doesnt know where KB could be is... pretty easy going (im such diplomat )

perhaps you can evacuate your troops from Milne Bay now? You cant hold there for too much longer.

Andy keeps throwing away his forces like the AI does. I´ve long stopped wondering about his actions. What does he think about sending such a force to Milne Bay? Even LBA could whipe it out easily. I´m not as diplomatic as Pauk is, Andy plays at times as if it would be his first game and even then one should do better. And I´m sure he knows that.

The enemy main fleets was spotted at 8 hexes so the Judy nerf immediately cost us and only our Jills could attack them, we still got in 2 nice strikes with over 200 bombers.

Pardon me but what is a 'Judy nerf'?

Congrats, the CA and CL on Andy's side must run out sooner or later.  You have again been unbelievably lucky, and should I call it a present from Andy?  A little of both, I guess.

Andy is taking more risks, but he actually has to if he still wants to make it to the HI.  He plays for "all or nothing, glory or dead" it seems.  He will probably not split his CV main force to support a theater that likely won't be decisive and can be suppressed by his LBA.  I was surprised to a see a CVE here, though.  Whether he would bring his CV main force here, I don't know but don't expect so.  He probably is busy covering the clean up the Line Islands, the shuttling of LCU around or maybe just replenishing at Pearl?  If I was him, I would now be seeking to draw KB into a battle close to Pearl, and far from the yards in Japan.  Ideally even employing 4B in naval bombing and carrier-CAP sweeping.  Imagine the B29 on skip-bombing...

it just again shows that mounting amphibious assaults from several different directions is not that much of a smart idea when the enemy still has carriers and LBA to react against it. Focus on one direction, use the hammer and move forward with the enemy not being able to do something against it. If you go away from that tactic and split your force then the enemy will always have a chance to punish you. KB against the full might of Allied carriers and LBA is something KB will regret trying to. KB against little or no LBA at all getting a shot against an invasion convoy? OMG, I should keep my comments behind my back.

Can´t see any reasonable explanation for all of Andy´s disasters. Again and again and again. Just look at that attack at Moulmein trashing thousands of Allied av! And that by one that was responsible for the ground combat model? Sorry, he should just know better not to shock attack across the river right into Moulmein. And a hundred more pages of AAR that show many more rather flawed decisions. PzB will get Andy to a point when Andy runs out of squads, ships and aircraft. The fact that he has to use P-40 for frontline duty at this stage of the war says it all anyway with the P-40 of 1944 being as crappy as the P-40 of 12/7/41.

Kudos to PzB but Andy really is a thankful victim.

Banzai!

Thx guys, I know you love to see the decadent democracies take a beating

I think Andy has handled his amph invasions of PM and Milne Bay quite well.
In and out in 1 turn - and it is like said; he's in mid 44 and can't hassle around any longer.
Allied carrier fleets need to work together to be superior to KB and thus can't be two places at the same time.

It may look easy to add another nail but all the decisions from committing the KB, meeting with replenishment fleet going flank speed not to cause delays and
then the split hex attack from 7-8 hexes with low fuel reserves. It's touch and go; I got it right, was lucky and beat Andy by 1 hex (again).

This turn was not so great;

1. I sent the KB west 3-4 hexes and ordered a combined sea & air bombardment of Milne Bay.
Wanted to cripple Allied troops there.

--> Our bombardments from the sea were semi-efficient but KB refused to launch a single ac against them from 8 hexes.

In return ca 100 enemy ac (fighters and medium bombers) attacked KB.
They didn't hit anything but I was scared to see 8 out of 12 B-25s with a tiny escort slip so easily through our 250 fighter CAP to make attack runs.

2. Allied shock attack at Milne Bay capture the base and Andy has now secured southern New Guinea and will soon be able to dominate Solomons and New Britain.

3. I got a bit "over committed" and sent the small fleet a Tagula Island west to intercept fleeing enemy ships.
Hoped to sink the cripples and catch a few more high value assault transports and LSTs.

--> We missed the enemy by 1 hex and even though the TF was ordered to return to base after its 6-7 hex long journey it didn't.
Instead it stayed put just within Allied SBD and TBD efficient range This cost us 1 CA, 2 CL and 1 DD. The old CLs I could have lived with but the Suzuya was a bad loss.
It was hit by 1 torp that didn't cause much damage, then 3 1000lb bomb hits wrecked it completely; 76 fires and I had to scuttle her. So a small consolation for Andy here.
I should have sent only the smaller ships or stayed away but forgot all about the bad tendency of TFs to "stick around" when they absolutely shouldn't.

So we've had another victory with some unnecessary losses and been reminded that Allied LBA can be absolutely deadly even to KB with 1000+ ac.
I will continue to snipe and be an opportunist in the Solomons - New Guinea area.

Time to vanish into the shadows again!

Thx Pauk-San!

I know, been tryin to use the torpedo cruisers but they catch a single torpedo or bomb and that's about it...
The heavy cruisers is a proven concept on the other hand!

This turn I tried to take advantage of the disorganization among Allied fighter units in New Guinea; most of them were most likely fatigued and still on escort missions.
So I gathered the bulk of our fighters and ordered 100 bombers to strike. Almost everything worked; 200 fighters overwhelmed the CAP and our Judy's broke through to pound an assault transports and more.
If ONLY our 70 Betty naval bombers 12 hexes away with Air HQ support had followed suit we had given the Allied fleets a nasty backlash.

Well, c'est la vie - dang hard to coordinate things properly here, just as in RL

Some unescorted Allied bombers went alone to Rabaul and were massacred by the relatively weak CAP there. Even Tony a's are capable against such prey (have ordered them to upgrade to the c version now!).

The whole Milne Bay operation was completely unnecessary. Especially with this number of ships. If Andy wanted to invade place, he could used only barges, but I can hardly see use for this base. With 3 bases covering it, there was surprisingly few CAP fighters over there.
Most Allies BBs are already sunk, Cruisers vere in short supply, and now there are even less of them. You can probably challenge next landing with surface battle (but avoid his airforce).

With whole peninsula under control, Lae seems to be next logical target. It can be easily taken by land, but I suspect Andy will send fleet there. Flood whole bay with short-range subs. They should slow invasion fleet enough to catch them during unloading. What are thiose Allied ahips at Buna anyway?

I think it only works for groups starting on map. Any arriving later seems to have planes in-line with in-game model.
Also, I am not sure if plane do not get streamlined when Drop Tanks are turned on. I see this with my 4E experiment, when originally they are listed with original bombload, but changing mission, and drop tanks shows new bombload.

I must disagree there; Milne Bay is key to opening up the Solomons and New Britain region.
Already today Allied air strength attack Rabaul. Woodlark Island (AF size 5) will soon be captured and all of Solomons will become untenable.
Within 4-6 months New Britain will be isolated and Allies can continue their drive up New Guina while moving towards Marshalls.

I don't mind fighting in these regions in mid 44, much better than a concerted drive into the SRA but Allied losses and logistics make this difficult as seen by previous...setbacks

I intend to fight over Rabaul, far from enemy fields with few pilot losses and with ample support and a size 9 airdrome and supporting fields we can cause some damage here.
I'm also planning a couple of reinforcement operations to strengthen key strategic bases and regions.

New Guinea - Solomons

The entire Lae region as seen on the map is easily defensible because of the rough jungle terrain - a fact I'm going to take advantage off.
Bombardments have a limited effect on enemy LCU only when very large forces are committed - results then are quite minimal as seen here.

+1

Milne can be built into a pretty big airfield.

I think the timetable is faster than that, 3 - 4 months tops. Allied engineering units are huge. Milne AB will get maxxed out in like 14 - 18 days if he wants. That puts a large LBA with fighter cover over all of the Solomons. As you know, he can close a field each day, and you can't really defend as you can't rail your damaged air groups away.

I'll be watching how you defend. I haven't come up with a good solution.

Within 5 months the entire South - Central New Guinea, New Britain and the Solomons will most likely be cut off, isolated or captured.
The pace depends on how much resources Andy puts into this offensive. I'm not going to make an all out defensive effort, just delay.
- I'm slowly extracting non-essential units from the region and moving it north.

I want a solid defense in Marianas and a strong strategic reserve at Mindanao; something like 2500 AV for counter-invasion ops.
We can't prevent Allies from landing 5-6 divisions werever they want but we can counterattack and stall any such invasions if properly prepared.
- Stalled Allied invasion is a victory for us.

Allied ac hit Rabaul again today - cost them 30 B-24s and we hardly lost any killed pilots.
A huge base with 9 forts and supplies is difficult to suppress from 10-12 hexes.

Another ugly bugly showed its face today; B-29s mining Bataan harbour from Burma at max range, 35 hexes.
Think I will move some of my training units to Manila and deploy them at 30% CAP and 50% training.

Yes, New Britain is a key location, and though Andy was careless with sending this landing force of high-value targets rather poorly covered, had bad luck with KB making the 8th hex in time, the operation might turn out to be an important one.  Andy is getting even more pushy it seems -- Moulmein, and simultaneous ops on other fronts.  He is playing the clock now, so he might go for even greater risks soon.  For sure, his magical eye is focused on KB now   He probably is desperate for any intel on its parts, and happy to have found it at Milne Bay.

Rabaul with lvl 9 AF and forts sounds huge, but we have seen how little forts can mean.  Hopefully, even if B-29 get involved, the lvl 9 airfield complex supported by smaller AF can hold out a couple of weeks.  You are right, it is a great opportunity to fight over your own turf and hurt Andy's air forces.  Surely Andy will attempt to shut down all air bases and then launch some amphibious landings. NE-New Guinea, New Ireland and New Britain might be on his list.  With large air bases there, and 29's stationed, he could hit and in effect control the ports and bases of huge area.

Scary to see the B-29 reach Manila now, to be honest.  That has huge implications for security of your naval lines in the China Sea.  What other ports can he mine now? A couple come to mind...  And imagine he will use the 29's on port strikes, even if just at night?  Not good, but that's the advance thru Burma good for.  I think it was Canorebel who used an advance into Vietnam successfully to set up 4EB bases to eliminate all of the DEI and SRA effectively?  Or was it Cannonfodder?  Don't recall, but the AAR was over sometime last year, and that was a slow but low-risk-high-gain move.  Will Andy go for that too?

B-29's are quite efficient at this, far more than any other plane in my experience. Not sure if this is real or just perceived or more of my unlucky rolls ...

I suspect it's real and is another manifestation of the linear nature of the game. B-29s drop the most ordinance and get more die rolls. That said, this is what all those local minesweepers are for.

Hm, yes I need to have 4-5 teams of dedicated mine sweepers based in key areas were Allied 4Es can drop mines.
Andy discontinued his attacks on Rabaul; too costly. This gave me an opportunity to strengthen the fighter defenses there.
As of now Allies still doesn't have sufficient number of fighters and bombers in the area to both suppress our ground forces, close our airfields, act as naval bombers and
launch a campaign against Rabaul.

We should keep in mind that Andy is fighting a tough battle; it will take a lot for him to achieve anything better than a draw and time is short.
We still controll a territory the same size as Japan did in Mid 42 and got a lot more strength to defend it with.

Allies starting to nibble at our resources in the SRA is something we will have to live with.
I will place some interceptors as the more valuable bases and ensure that the B-29s will pay a price for their visits.

Within 2 months we will have 3 new fast Katsuragi carriers and a new light carriers and dozens of escort destroyers.
I think I will take up raiding, forming 2 fast high endurance task force with some fast fleet oilers and try to perform hit and run ops.
- As long as we still controll Midway there is a huge gap were we can slip into the Pacific.

I'm here thinking about 2 34 knot carriers escorted by 2 light or heavy cruisers of Oyodo / Tone Class plus 4 Akizuki class destroyers.

B-29s hit Miri at max range today, minor damage to refineries.
In return we set an ambush over Moulmein and gutted another 25 or so B-24s.
Had hoped that more medium bombers would strike but ok, this was not so bad either.

In the Central Pacific Intel has informed that CA New Orleans has been sunk with a given coordinate.
This means that flooding has increased; I'm using the intel to vector a sub precisely into the path leading from this coordinate and to San Francisco.
- This was the same method I used to pinpoint Allied cripples west of Australia 7-8 months ago. One of the few ways to use the limited Jap intel.

Tried to gather our army bombers for an attack against an Allied bomber base.
180 Helen IIb and numerous fighter units were assigned. A large unit of "sacrificial" Oscars were also sent along.

Not a lot to cheer Banzai about...more faint ...ai! :p

1. Bombers didn't go in together but in 3-4 waves
2. Enemy CAP was inferior to our escort but we suffered immense losses in escorts and moderate bomber losses.
Our "sacrificial" Oscars took the heaviest casualties fortunately.
3. Our trained bomber units caused only minor-moderate damage to targets.

It's absolutely futile to mount such ops; seems like Japan is doomed to defense in the air from 44-46.

In Burma our Central Army has now returned to Chang Mai, in 3 days monsoon season sets in.
In the Solomons the Allies are flooding into the area around Milne Bay; little to be done about that.

Numerous new land combat units are arriving in Home Islands, will rest and prepare them and insert them into the Main Defensive Line.

Nice 4E kills there , i always wonder what Andy does with the Allied aircraft , he doesn't seem to want to conserve them and create pools of the better a/c , all the better for you then

As ever good luck and great read.

PS World of Tanks , hope to see you there sometime , got TS3 ? if so we can platoon up and actually chat .. that would be interesting after reading all your AAR's . and clan wise we accept anyone over 21 who isn't a complete idiot if you fancy trying out a friendly group. our forums are here http://xiii.monkeh.net/ if your interested. We are a very multi national group but mostly North Europeans , Basically anywhere North of Britain.

PPS apologies for the plug

Not a lot of interesting things to tell for the time being..
Andy is playing with his new toys and is mining and bombing everywere possible with his B-29s both from Burma and Northern Oz.
- I'm distributing my mineseweepers

Enemy has now marched through the jungle to Salamua, it's a rough jungle hex with 3 forts and 140 AV so let's see if 1 division is enough to take it.
Enemy paras are collecting dot bases near Milne Bay and Line Islands while an amph invasion is about to hit Palmyra. The latter has run out of supplies - it had 600 troops
over max limit and this "ate" 6000 supplies in a week and with Xmas Island out of business there's no way to restock. I have airlifted important units and cadres out.

In general using huge flying boats to collect troops that have stranded in the jungle, like those that retreated from Milne Bay.

In Moulmein we have 5000 AV and 4 forts + building. More than enough me thinks and I'm busy building a large reserve at Bangkok and Singapore.
The division cadre evacuated from Xmas Island together with 2 shattered regiements and the CD unit have arrived at Guam and started rebuilding; within 6 months the place will have its garrison ready.
- Lots of this logistical tasks all over the place.

Yeah, perhaps I need to join up Rob - not getting any further team wise in WoT. Most teams are made up Baldricks without cunning plans
TS3 in place, have played some platoon missions but that only set you up against 1 tier higher opponents, so not much to gain. Just unlocked the E-75, GW Tiger and VK4502A and trying to get the best
gun for the Jagdtiger

Sorry about that Pauk-San!
The Emperor has given us a week off to enjoy sushi, sake and geisha treats!

We're still doing a turn per day; mostly hundreds of air strikes on bases south in New Guinea and on Palmyra.
Nothing really worth talking loudly about. We sent BB Hiei and 3 heavy cruisers + 1 light cruiser and 5 destroyers to bombard enemy division at Salamua.
With 6 spotters we claimed 12 casualties

KB has returned to base to refurbish; upgrading some Judy's to "version 2" - but this is almost exactly the same crap as the first with a service rating of 3.
Also found some "pre-production" Judy's - version 3 with the range we need. All our latest carriers arrived with these, so when we get 3 more fleet carriers we will have a 75% 8 hex strike capability.
- Just waiting for the Grace and reinforcements while cleaning up mines, hundreds of mines dropped by B-29s. We lost a few sweepers, that's about it.

Next great upgrade for Combined Fleet is scheduled to 6-7 /44 while last batches go in 9, 12 and 1/45 me thinks.

Rabaul will soon become totally suppressed by Allied air power in Southern New Guinea area; it's just a question of stocking the place up and evacuate everything that can burn.
We got a "faulty" AA unit that has the equipment of a full tank division; this is the native garrison with 9 forts.

Ok, back to rainy November and a few hours of blessed sleep before being dragged out of bed and out into the darkness to work for the state again

Time for a more extensive update:

Andy is busy in Line Islands and in New Guinea - New Britain.

In Line Islands Palmyra has been pounded flat and enemy troops landed there yesterday.
We held on without supplies for 2 days. Cadres of all LCUs on the island has been withdrawn.

In New Britain area LCUs landed a whole Oz Divsion at Gasmata; well I think only half the division got ashore.
When I got the last turn the small crafts were already at Gasmata and I used Zero's on naval attack and PT boats to punish them.
We sank dozens but the combat elements of the 1st Oz Div still got ashore.

Let's see what we can do to disrupt this move with limited resources.
Allied para's also landed in dot bases on New Britain.

Today's counterstrike came at Moulein; a full LRCAP effort caused heavy Allied losses in the air.
We lost some ac to OPS but only 13 pilots were lost in all theatres today.

Solomons - New Guinea - New Britain - Line Islands regions

In general I'm busy with logistics; building up fuel and supply bases, reinforcing bases and equipping our main lines of resistance.

We now have 10 of the new Matsu destroyers; they will release 10 fleet destroyers from escort duties for the slower Car Divs.
I'm also pulling most subs back to refit. We only have 8 coastal subs and 24 fleet subs operational now. I want to increase the number to 50 and
equip them with radar before deploying them in more organized ways. E.g. wolf packs against enemy fleet ops, mining and recon missions.

In 3 months I expect the Empire to reach its peak fighting strength; foremost we're waiting for 4 carriers, 2 light cruisers, 20 destroyers, 20 subs and the Grace multi dive - torpedo bomber.
Numerous LCU reinforcements also make it possible to make certain theatre's "Andy proof". My plan is to make 3 strategic reserve grouping of 3 or more divisions for counter attacks.
- All successful defensive operations depend on strong counter attacks in air, sea and land.

hmph, what are your plans there?

I think you should delay Andy at Gasmata using Imperial Navy (both surface raiding and bombardment TFs, once when he moves ac there)

the more effort you put in the 'defence' at New Britain, the more attention from Andy you will recive there. And its better to fight there then allow him to advance towards New Guinea.

Ofc, we all aware that N. Britain is secondary theatre, but it would be a pitty not to exploit exposed Allies at Gasmata and buy another month.

Just remember, the more effort you put in "defence", the more Allied resources you will bring there. Andy will become greedy... and when he do that, you can make a *poof* dissapearing without trace (to the Marians...)

and this one is for motivation:

There are dozens of small dot bases and islands in the region and I can't defend them all.
Most bases therefore have 3-4 forts and ~30 AV for defense. Only the bigger bases have dedicated garrison units.
If a base is invaded I will immediately try to reinforce and drag the battle out and then get the troops out again afterwards.

With Gasmata Andy sent a full sized division, fully prepped, in small landing barges and they appeared and unloaded within 1 turn.
This was very well planned and executed and didn't give me time to counter. I ordered reinforcements to be flown in by seaplane and over 150 bombers were
ordered to perform ground attacks while numerous MTBs buzzed around the place.

As usual, it's difficult to get Jap air units to fly even with aggressive commanders and support, so only 45 or so ac attacked with little effect.
The Allied shock attack brought down all forts and Gasmata is bound to fall tomorrow.

While I would like to throw in more troops and resources I have to contend with one fact; The Empire doesn't have a limitless pool of supplies and troops.
I'm working hard to build supply depots and provide strong garrisons and reserve forces for the main defensive lines. This effort is so all consuming that even the
holding activities in the Solomons - New Britain - New Guinea region are difficult to sustain.

Each time Andy pops his head out a bit to far I'm going to be there to smack it with a large fly swatter though

The numerous reinforcement units that are arriving in the Home Islands now are not at full strength anymore and morale is low, how can it be!!
So I have to rest them, prepare them and ship them out with supplies. Making the Marianas including Truk and Carolines, Northern New Guinea, Phillippines, DEI, SRA ++ ready for combat
is a daunting task. Hundreds of smaller bases require smaller garrisons and 2-3000 supplies while ~50 or more require strong garrisons and large supply pools. Then we got 4-5 major hubs
like Singapore, Soerabaja, Truk, Rabaul, Manila, Bangkok etc that must be bullet proof and provide 250+ air support and 150k supplies or more.

Just wait until Andy tries to handle this; then we can sit back and enjoy the fruits of our hard labour now!
So no matter how unattractive, we're now fighting a delaying battle in the outer perimeter bases. Small TFs are transporting surplus units and base forces from the isolated or bypassed bases back
into the perimeter lines.

Nice motivation Pauk-San!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 23, 44

Air Combat

Andy now dutifully swept Moulmein with hundreds of fighters before making a meek bombing run.
This is the price of bombing us here, constant sweeps and high fatigue.

Our fighter strength is growing, all frontline units are at full strength and weekly numerous second rate fighter units can be upgraded with Franks, Jacks or Tonys
Our traing and rear area units now consist of Zeros, Oscars and Tojos mostly.
