Hi guys, nublett in need of help.

I found a fleet of abandonded and damaged ships deep in space between several empires. The different ships are several troop transports, frigates atleast one cruiser and 3(!) capital ships. A couple of months back ingame i finished my first 6 cruisers, so this is a big deal to say the least.
Earlier i did find a lone frigate and scrapped it for research, never noticed any difference... So what to do, keep all usefull ships or scrap a few for research?
Btw, you only move them to a shipyard and scrap them in it right?

I don't play with the story-line events on any more but when you find a ship graveyard get as many of your constructors as possible over there. Also bring in a military force. There was some voodoo about who gets allocated a ship if more than one race is in proximity and I thought this was given to the closest military ship. Not sure about that last point though. Keep the powerful ships and scrap the others. Just give ships you want to scrap the 'Scrap at nearest space port' command. Focus on the big ships first.

Hey Fetrik!

These are very valuable finds, especially if your Empire is still small and weak.

My general approach to these is to decide which I need more, powerful ships or a research boost.  The large ships will give a about a 50% completion to a tech somewhere in your tech tree, at least on the research speed settings I play (slider as low as possible).

Quite often I retire the small ships for research bonus and keep the capital ships and cruisers for fighting, or even just the capitals.

To retire a ship for its tech you don't need to move it to the spaceport, and whatever you do DO NOT CHOOSE SCRAP.  Select the ship, right click it and choose retire at nearest spaceport

Edit: You get a research bonus while repairing these ships, so if you have 4 being repaired at the same time its a nice research boost.

and finally, I *think* the strange bug/design decision that let you claim a ship after another empire repaired it by keeping a military ship in the vicinity is gone now. At least, I was repairing ships in a graveyard with many other races and the Teekan (and then later the Sluken after they invaded) had fleets sitting in the graveyard as it was in their system, they didn't get any of my ships thats for sure.

Thanks Das123. I guess that's what i will do then.
I have my 1st fleet there already consisting of 5 destroyers plus one of the capital ships is already mine. Since this is really deep in for my limited range i have deployed a resupply ship here aswell.
Incidentally i also found a low quality desert planet here which gives 100% energy research empirewide... Colonist being built, maybe even launched already.
So yeah, they'll have to pry this system and the ships in it from my cold dead hands!

More usefull info. Thank you Woodman

I guess i did screw up my earlier find and lost any advances on the Titan guns and whatever else they had.

I might retire a few ships just for bonus tech then. Since i am by far the most powerfull in military among the races i have found so far.

Btw, any easy way to view the equipment on found ships?
The way i do it now is by opening design window, show all designs and then slowly go through the list. It's a slow and annoying search method any better one would be appreciated.

Select the ship and double click the window in the bottom left.  There should be tabs for components and weapons in the window that pops up.  I think it only works on your own ships though, not sure.

Edit: Just so you know, when you retire a ship its not instant, it takes time to deconstruct in the shipyard, when it is done you should get a popup telling you what tech you got advanced from retiring it.

Awesome! Thanks again.

Time to go make merry and a certain empire extinct...

When the ship is selected, you can also click directly on the design name in the Selection Panel at bottom-left of the screen. This will open the ship's design in the Design Detail screen.

Can you please implement 2 new checkboxes in the startscreen of a new game regarding graveyard/found ships?

They really unbalance the game and currently its only possible to switch them off by also killing the storyline.

[] No graveyards/found ships.
[x] Vessels can only be repaired, if all their components are at the most 1 tech level ahead.

The second checkbox could be the new default.
You would still find those ships, but you are unable to repair them unless you are only 1 tech level away from their most advanced components.
The effect would be, that they can provide a research bonus and a combat bonus and are thus worthwhile to repair, but they do not completely imbalance the game in the way a stardestroyer does, when found in the very beginning. If someone from medieval times found a heavily destroyed airplane from 1918, they wouldnt gain much tech knowledge from it, let alone be able to repair it...

That would also increase the flavor, instead of forcing you to deactivate the graveyards (and the story).
