I will purchase the base game of Distant Worlds. Having said that, is it better to learn the base game and then purchase the first expansion after a time of getting use to it? Or is it just easier with the first expansion to begin with due to its enhancements? Wondering about the pros and cons to this learning method.

I watched several of the Lets Play series by Das24680. Very nicely done and certainly sealed my purchase decision. Give the man a commission!

I'm not sure the second expansion is in the budget quite yet. or the base game for that matter... but I have the itch....

i tasted until yesterday mostly the game by a friend. i first layed eyes on this game shortly after the release of vanilla dw, at this time i was overwhelmed with the options and the automation system! 2-3 ago i sit down and read the manual and the galactopedia (game-wiki) and made my way through the steep learning curve. the game got "easier" to learn after the first expansion. so it would be better to start off at least with the first expansion pack^^. i was itching to test the new features of legends (especially the character system and ship vectors, which were my main gripe) and so i bought the whole package 30 min. ago^^. ..bottom line: buy the package at this (relatively) low price.

I took the plunge and bought it all on Wednesday.  I am somewhat overwhelmed, but then I have not really spent anytime with the manual yet. I've had so little time to actually play that I did not want to "waste it" by reading the manual. I think as the day wears on though I will read at least parts.

From what I have read here, at least get Return of the Shakturi, but I would heartily reccomend biting the bullet and buying the whole thing.
Cheers

I bought the base game and first expansion today. Play for an hour or so and I am hooked. Gonna pick up the second expansion before the sale ends.

The moment that I felt hooked was after I'd been setting up some mining bases and building more exploration ships, I got a pop up. Seemed one of my ships found an abandoned Cruiser in the near by asteroid belt. Boarded the ship and crewed it before sending it back to my home system to be the new flagship of my first fleet. Might not seem like much but the whole experience made me smile. :D

Check the components of those "found" ships, if they have a low firepower rating, I retire them at a space port for the tech. Same for all pirate ships I manage to scare into joining me. You can get some serious jumps by doing that.

Love the characters. I have played the vanilla since release. But they add a whole new "real" feeling to the game.

While I haven't yet picked up either expansion (that should happen in a few weeks), I would recommend at least picking up the base game + Return of the Shakturi.  I say that because the UI in vanilla Distant Worlds is very clunky and not terribly user-friendly, and by all accounts, RotS goes a long way towards fixing this.

I think I'll do just that as that's the general feeling I get as well. Now I need to download while the wife isn't looking...

Buying and trying just the original release at this point is like watching Star Wars Episode I most of the way through with a baby crying in the row behind you to decide if you will like the entire Star Wars series.

Just buy it through Legends, or for a demo use those few hours of time to spare in checking out the playtime in the "let's play" video AAR and you will have a clear enough basis to decide.

Other things added by ROTS that made it a must by for me are fighters (a personal favorite of mine) and also selectable research tree.  I like directing my research rather than random selection (unless this has changed in the base game)

I saw a Distant Worlds preview on spacesector.com few weeks ago and I decided to buy all three parts of the game when Legends will be released. After playing the game since last Wednesday, I can assure You that this is THE best game purchase I have done in years. I'm still learning on how to play the game but I can already say, that it's truly the greatest 4X space strategy game EVER !
And I'd recommend buying full package, instead of just two parts (DW+ROTS). The border system, characters etc are so great addition to the game !

Kind of difficult financially at the moment in as much as I would like to do so. I've been unemployed for a while so discretionary funds are hard to come by. So I am contemplating this all quite carefully because it is unlikely I will have the opportunity to get anything else for some time to come.

Let me say it this way. If You're a fan of good and deep space strategy games You probably won't need to buy any other game for the next X months DW is 'That' good IMHO

WARNING Blastpop! This game will be addictive and may (will) jeopardize your job-seeking time allocations. Again just a warning!

i.e....... BUY THIS GAME, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
