Thanksgiving Day in Canada is in early October IIRC.

Yes, every American school child knows that "our" Thanksgiving is a celebration of our long hard war of independence fought with Canada to free us from the yoke of Canadian tyranny-culminating with the famous Battle of New Orleans where Stonewall Jackson whipped a combined Canuk-Indian army commanded by the Marquis de Pontchartrain and drove them into the sea. Well, except for bunch of them that stuck around and taught most New Orleaners how to speak a very weird variation of French.

Do not confuse this with the Canadian Thanksgiving which, if I am not mistaken, has something to do with hockey or ice fishing....

Never again will we bow down to the power of the Canadian king. Sic Semper Tyrannis!

Now if I posted that at History Channel more than 75% would believe it, and thatsonly counting the HC experts!!

Why do the Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving??

We have ANZAC Day, do they have a Dieppe Day holiday?

On a history note, didn't John Wilkes Booth shout "Sic sempter tyranis" just after shooting Abraham Lincoln?

Which in turn led to one of the best sayings in the halls of Texas politics:

"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

Going on with "latin" references...

there's a little riddle in Italy about Berlusconi..

...When Col. Gheddafi was murdered, President Berlsconi seems to have said:

"yes, Gloria was a trans"

...and his counsellor whispered in his ear: <<No, it's Sic Transit Gloria Mundi>>

...and Mr. B. has said: "Oh, was she operated? Don't like her anymore!"

Ok...probably translated in english isn't exactly funny...but when mr.B. said Sic Transit Gloria Mundi everybody here had laughted...cause it's well known that he doesn't know a word of latin... :-)

Goodness me my Southern friend, you are bordering on politics. I believe a conservative TV personality has recently published a historically questionable tome about these events.

Mar 16, 17 1944

While our invasion fleet has finally left Perth and is slowly moving towards Exmouth, our I US Corp at Chiuseul attacked the 20,000 japanese garrison.
We managed to get a 3-1 on the first day, bringing down forts to level , but on the second day our supplies went low and we achieved a miserable 1-2....despite that losses are higher on japanese side (among them only a couple of fragmented Bdes are in combat shape, the rest is what remains of his Solomons garrisons...

The Japanese former Indian Army is loading at Rangoon...our subs are moved towards Victoria points, hoping to find something to shoot at...

The first small (7 planes) B-29 squadrons arrived at aden.... Our Indian Army is moving towards Calcutta...while some armoured Bdes are marching towards Madras...soon, very soon the whole India will be ours again

CVs are refuelling at perth...he sent some picket ships close to Exmouth...will try to take them out with our DDs before the can spot our SDBs scouting those waters...

Yes, and do you know what they did in real life? A couple of days later, they took off, loaded with spare parts, and flew to India. You will have to take them apart, put them on ships , and boat them over. These planes should have some pretty crappy crews. Start to gather your good bomber crews from elsewhere. These puppies have some sick recon range. Want to see what is doing at Rangoon? No problem

Just to clarify, John, I was quoting what Booth said, not agreeing with him. The death of Lincoln was the worst calamity the South could have suffered. It was a great tragedy, and Lincoln was a great man. My views about Lincoln and Sherman, as expressed from time to time in my writing and speaking events, get me in hot water with many southerners. Plenty of the Sons of Confederate Veteran crowd have questions about my loyalty to the South.

these guys will give you death-star ability, but they must be carefully cossetted. start by keeping them in training, & transfer your best bomber pilots into it.

they are devastating as night-raids against airfields at 7000', since iirc you're HR-restricted to moon/2, keep them quiet 'til you can run a group of 35-40.
but they've got awful serviceability, once they go on continuous ops they should be limited to 50% attack, except for night-raid time.

For what i know about the US History that statement is very very true. Lincoln's death has been a calamity for the South. Lincoln was probably one of the few northern leaders who wasn't willing to use (abuse) the "slavery thing" in order to legitimate every kind of abuse towards the southerners...with his death the war for the confederate had gone well beyond 1865

Although some of the details could be argued, the Reconstruction seems the proper way to move past an ugly and decisive conflict. No doubt some of those differences are still with us today, but "the Treaty of Versailles" approach would have been acceptable to many in the North, and would have been a disaster for our country. Even without Lincoln, cooler heads seem to have prevailed

We have had many fine presidents but Lincoln was probably the finest. No president ever had to lead the nation under a more testing time and there are quite a few that I think would have failed to meet the challenge.

"A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

I also think history has been very unkind to Jefferson Davis-a war hero and highly capable man thrust into an impossible situation. We should give him a second look.

Shelby Foote presented a sympathetic portrait of Davis in 'The Civil War'. His life was marred by several personal tragedies, and his service as President of the CSA seemed almost to unite the South - against him! He was constantly excoriated by the Southern press. But following his post-war imprisonment, he gradually came to be seen as a martyr, & his history of the uprising sold well in the area he had once governed.

otoh, he was also a slave-owner & a traitor to the USA, which will tend to color how he is viewed as a historical figure.

Yes, they are being transfered now to Aden....and they will get some better crews asap. However, considering our HR about night attack, i wonder if it's ever worth the time spent to organize a night raid...normally bad weather kicks in during the 100%moonlight nights and screws up everything...

will get a turn probably late tonight...so untill tomorrow no updates...hope to get back on our normal pace asap

Good luck with the new offensive and on not taking conventional, ineffectual advice. I am quite looking forward to the reaction hereabouts when people realise that you are one of the few people hereabouts who plays the meta-game.

My only advice to you would be to ensure you maintain your concentration of forces and focus on your objectives and don't, in the flush of initial success, try to expand your objectives on the fly. The objectives you've picked are achievable and will change the strategic dynamic entirely. Commit to them 100% and maintain your force concentrations.

Strategically I think you are now at the point where you should ignore advice on this thread ( tactically and operationally you still have much to learn so should continue listening ), especially the inevitable discussion/advice on expanding or limiting objectives once the initial landings have occured. Ignore that advice/discussion and stick to your plan.

Nicely done, GreyJoy!

That, my friends, is what happens if you severely overstack an airfield in range of a couple hundred 4EB's.

I fear 4Es. Yikes. Then again, woe to the player that puts over 1000 planes in any base.

I can't understand the over stacking. It is just begging for massive losses. I never do it. Naval bombardments are brutal on an over stacked base as well. Just say no... to over stacking.

And he has 350 more fighters on the 3 bouganville bases and more 500 fighters and bombers on the bases around Rabaul (Green Is and such...)...and part of those zeros in the air were from some CVs that are stationing one hex northeast of Rabaul...quite a massive air force!

Think he was almost ready to start an offensive from Rabaul...probably against PM....that's the only reason i can justify the overstacking...(however Rabaul is AF 9)...but it's been like that for over a month now...he was really calling for it...

In India we're fighting for Calcutta. One more turn and the sieged jap garrison will open the gates of the city to the 7th Aus Division supported by several tank units...
