I'm curious as to what everyone's settings are for patrols. I've got around 50 ships with around 65% destroyers and the rest frigates with a few escorts on auto. All the destroyers and frigates are in fleets but i have all automation off except for when I designate a ship to be automated.

What do you all recommend I do with automation? It usually takes a fleet too long to get to a system when I'm being attacked by pirates and I've lost the mining facility already, so I have them evenly spread out to respond to threats at a good amount of time.

However, it seems like whenever I'm attacked, I see a random fleet responding when I've already taken care of the threat. How do I take care of that?

I tend to micromanage my fleet responses, and I also noticed the fleets taking off.

The solution is to look on the buttons under the selection box when having the fleet selected, and find the postures. To have them be nice, little local defenders, make sure they are in "defend" mode, and give them a short range - like system.

It seems manual fleets are in "attack" mode by default, which makes them behave in ways I don't understand. I think the main issue is that fleets does not interrupt their "chores" on attack like a human will do. A fleet in travel or on "precautionary" refuel order will not respond to attacks.

Yeah, you need to set the range in which you want your fleets to attack, ie solar system, sector, etc.  It seems like a lot of ppl set up fleets to protect certain areas with bases on it.  I personally like to send a frigate or two to patrol a mining base, and set him to attack solar system targets.  That way I will always have a ship or two guarding that system and I don't have to wait for my fleet to jump there unless I'm overwhelmed.

Will a frigate on a patrol mission have the sense to refuel by itself? Even if it means going on trips outside the system? Or if there is a source within the system?

I see a lot of silly long range travels to go to new patrol objectives from automated ships.

I probably need to get a couple of ships on patrol duty to protect my mining sites anyway. But thanks for the tips! I'm curious if the patrol ships will refuel themselves as well though as mentioned above. Anyone know?

Hello Bingeling;

This quote from Elliot should answer your questions:

"If you manually assign a patrol mission to a military ship it should continue patrolling the target indefinitely (i.e. until you stop it). If they are low on fuel, they will refuel and then return to patrol the target.

However automated ships work differently - after a time they may reassign themselves to new missions."

Yes, they refuel and repair on their own and go back to patrolling that target
