Just started playing the game, and i've run into a couple of questions that i haven't been able to find answers to (using the search function)

1. In the Galactopedia manual, there is a mention of "Energy to fuel converters" - how does one go about getting these, and how do they work?? (The GP. manual says that one can build a refueling depot at any location without the need to mine caslon or hydrogen.)

2. in playing my first game, after getting a few dozen worlds, suddenly my colonization efforts started failing 100% of the time even on high percentage compatibilty worlds (80-90%). Is this by design or have i encountered a glitch?

Where does it say that, could we get a specific reference? I have never heard of this as you describe it, so maybe something was written unclearly in the Galactopedia and needs to be fixed.

This is not by design. Can you elaborate more on what is happening?

1.  you need to research this ! It's at the Energy research, the end of the Mining+Energy collector tree.
Its a Very huge device you only should use at Stations and Resupply ships.
It convert Energy into the Fuel gas Caslon/hydrogen until the Cargo of the objekt is full.

2. not sure what you mean. The Colony ship allways got a 100% chance on an empty world. The quality/compatibilty just set how the population grow and how much tax you can await.
When the colonisation fail, there is another race on that planet allready. It can be an independed race you can try to join your empire while you send Colony ships to them.
Or it can allready colonized by another race while your ship fly to that planet.

i think i've run into a bug (not the only one)... no one else on the system (in most cases, although in rare instances someone else beat me to it)... rarely something identifiable has happened (i.e. - got attacked by a kaltor or something)... usually i just get a message that i am unable to colonize the system (i had a run of 20+ years of colonization failure). Other weird things would happen as well (i.e. - i'd get a message that my advisors said i need to but a bunch of new ships, but when i pulled up the recommendations, they were all blank). All these problems developed around the same time, so i am guessing the game file was corrupted.

Try to reinstall the game and look if that solve your problem. Maybe start a new game too.

I believe this is because the AI has finally understood that it is safe to spend some money if you have a slightly negative cashflow and cash on hand. But it only does this check at certain interval, and the build order screen is caclulated from fresh when opened.

So first it is the yearly financial report being done.

"We should build ships for 80k".

Then you open the screen and the common clerk checks and says

"Nope, negative cashflow, should not build anything".

Also, these recommendation are based on your economy and ship distribution percentages, not on whether or not your actually need more military ships.
