Few questions to the more experienced players here;

1. Did not GJ now also activate quite a few IJA divisions as well as the Kamikazes? (not condemming, far from it, just wondering)
2. Is the Sakhalin (sp?) garrisons counted towards the USSR activation limit?

@Greyjoy - nicely done

Terje

Not yet. But i will soon....

...tomorrow we will land at Bihoro (Okkaido), along with Kunashiri and Shukotan (see map).

Rader seems to have pulled out his air units...i bet he's reorganizing them near Ominato or at Sapporo... But we cannot wait. We have to push forward.

The plan must unfold now and timing is everything.

Tomorrow the 6th Army (2nd Marine Div, 37th Inf Div, 14th Can Bde and the 364th Inf Rgt) will conquer Uruppu, while another corp composed of the 33rd Inf Div, the 3rd and the 4th USMC Div will take Etorofu.
Shimushiri will be invested by the 1st USMC Div, 1st CAV Div, 22nd African Bde, 22nd USMC Rgt, three US Inf Rgt and 3 tank Battallions.

At Bihoro will land an Army composed of 2 Corps formed by the 38th, 32nd, 7th, 40th,41st, 43rd and 93rd Infantry Divisions, along with the 8th Indian Div, the 9th Aus Div and the 81st African Division

Kunashiri will be held by the Americal and the 6th, along with the 58th Inf Rgt

Shikotan: 112th Cav Rgt,. 298th Inf rgt and the 27th Aus bde

CVs and CVEs will provide close support cover.

We expect harsh attacks and several losses...

Enemy CVs and BBs spotted north of Wewak...

So he probably had placed the carriers in a position where they could handle your "impending" attack on the DEI.

....the story...second part:

So by mid Feb everything was ready...all my LCUs were fully prepped at PH and the ships were ready to be loaded....my combat ships moved out, while 4 old CLs and 25 DDs remained in the Solomons in order to support the Chiuseul operation....

All my subs except for 50 (25 in India and 25 in the Solomons) were redirected to PH.
I stripped all the RN and moved it all to PH, along with several Australian LCUs and the best Indian Divisions
The idea was to avoid the usual route "Addu->Paramushiroˇ¨ and take the southern route...from Midway up to Uruppu ...a long trip....

The key was the absolute silence. Nothing had to revail my plans. No naval search, no ASW...nothingˇ...
At perth I kept on moving ships, in the hope to transmit some radio signals that could be captured by his lurking ships...
The invasion TFs took forever to load...and my CVs took forever to be moved from Ndeni to Suva, from Suva to Thaiti, Christmas and PH (long route to avoid his subs and his damned glens)....
----finally by the first week of march our invasion fleet met our combat fleet near Midway....and then we moved forward...

...silence..

...sweating...studyin every single sigin report that could show a Rader's interest for Nopac...
....the days were passing by...nothing...
...the KB was disappeared but all his fighters and bombers were still in SOPAC.... his combined fleet must have been somewhere nearby but I was pretty sure it was not waiting for me in NOPAC....and my invasion fleet wasnˇ¦t getting spotted...

...my subs opened and created a security shield of 10 hexes around my advancing ships...
....my TFs were too bigˇKtoo slowˇKlots of collisionsˇKlots of slowing down...i was getting mad...

...but, day after day, we were getting closerˇKand day after day we were undetected... I could not believe my eyes!

Then, few days ago, one of my DD TFs bumped across a PB picket ship 20 hexes south of UruppuˇKdamn! Iˇ've been detected!...thatˇ¦s why I ordered the assault with my 4Es against RabaulˇKneeded to slow down his transferring of LBAs from Sopac to NopacˇK the attack went far beyond my expectations tough...

However it seemed that he wasnˇ¦t fully aware yetˇKno transferring of units reported by the intel...and yet 1500 planes were caught at Rabaul the next day as weˇ¦ve seen... So we gained another day and we decided to rush forward!
...and here we are....at the very gates of japan....with 1260 ships, 2,000,000 of supplies 1,000,000 of fuel, AVs for an equivalent of 25 divisions...1,500 LBAs...12 CVs, 6 CVLs, 30 CVEs...and an army strong of 24 divisions plus endless support units, tanks, engineers, HQs....

These are the critical days...if I manage to get ashore and estabilish some operative AFsˇK Rader will be in trouble. If I donˇ¦t...well...the war will be lost

I guess those troops coming out of India are not going where they thought they were going. The good news is they are going home, the bad news is, just to pick up their winter underwear.  And they were so looking forward to that DEI vacation

GJ, with regard to your elaborate feinting in Oz and the eastern DEI, didn't you recently drop a para unit on one of the islands north of Darwin?

What an interesting turn of events.

This is not the most interesting or the most commonly used approach (NPAC) and it will certainly hurt that he can now use Kamis (as his general pilot experience is probably too low for anything useful anyway).

But this is exactly the kind of counter blow that was needed to stay in the game. Without it the clock would have run out for quasi Japanese victory.

Congratulations GreyJoy to pull off a stunt of that dimension. You made this game so much more interesting for Rader... and the Forumites and probably for yourself.

Incredible how this huge armada went from Midway to Uruppu totally undetected. A few subs with Jakes stationed on the Northern Route could have ruined surprise...

GJ, when time permits...tell us how you dealt with this in real life.  I mean, organizing such a huge and exciting and risky (risk of detection) must have left you kind of "on pins and needles."  Did you have trouble concentrating on real life:  sleeping, working, attending to the girl friend?  Are you currently sleep deprived but running on highest-octane adrenaline?

Greyjoy, well done! You've definitely lived up to your name. And unlike your namesake, I think you actually brought enough men to hold your conquests. That 4E raid on Rabaul really complemented this attack well. I'm sure 1000 aircraft is only a few days production for him, but it's going to take a little time to reorganize his air force and get it in position. Time that he doesn't have, from the looks of it. What sort of engineering forces do you have going ashore, and air units ready to stage in? Did he leave you any nice airfields as gifts?

Wow I am counting bases in range and I am thinking you can keep the kama's supressed. They have to have bases to fly from, and you have sort of isolated away points to launch from. This is not like Oki... where a single point can be attacked from multiple bases I count 9 bases in range, and you can march to Sapparo to project more power rather than risk Naval forces .. this is absolutely brillant! and I was thinking small lauching strikes from UJ into the heart of Japan .. Sapporo exposes the entire military complex .. P51's and P47's sweeping from Sapporo in 1944!

I have to think that since Rader sank so many AP's that you did not have the logistics to pull this off ...clearly despite all the losses you suffered the US is quite capable of launching such a daring strike into the heart of the homelands ...

I am in awe watching this unfold ..

Hummmmm, his chin rests on his hand and he mutters quietly while drumming his fingers on the large conference table. Hummmmm he mutters again. Whatever has Reek done with himself. He has become a veritable sea kraken and lain a heavy stroke on those LYBs. Nice, nice and all, but, I think I'll await the dropping of the other shoe before joining fully in the hozzanas and requests for interviews.

However, I must grudgingly admit, that was quite a well done organizational task and a nice (depending on one's point of view) surprise.

Carry on, Sea Kraken. Let's sea what the LYBs do for a response. No diddling about.

A guy stays away from an AAR for 24 hours and look what happens! Well played, maestro! Let the games begin.

If I could only offer one humble suggestion which you have probably already though of: You might want to bring more LCUs to the party on Hokkaido sooner rather than later.

Cheers,
CC

Well done, but you have only made 1st base, long way to go.

be ready on other fronts, a few cracks might open up to advance in other areas.

Mar 26, 27 1944

Landings went smoothly. Japan didn't react, nor at sea, nor in the air.
It seems that Rader is reorganizing his fleet near Ominato ...BBs and DDs spotted there...

Shimushri, Uruppu and Etorofu fell in allied hands

At Kunashiri we landed a full amphibious corp composed of 2 reinforced divisions.
At Shukotan we landed on a empty dot-base.
At Bihoro already 4500 AVs are ashore (used a mix of xAPs and APA, AKA and xAKs with empty LCIs and LST...with an ACG with a Amphib HQ)

So far so good.

The first fighter units are being transfered in these days from Aleutinas and now we're ready to unload our Air Army.

Our DDs covering the exit route from Etorofu bumbed and sunk a convoy of Aux ships trying to escape...

A great move GJ

Now give us AFB's some Joy for the pain inflicted earlier in the game by the LYB's. Cram enough fighters to cover yoru bases and start fragging Japan's industry with your 4e's. He'll need to bring back fighters from the frontlines to cover his cities or move KB north exposing himself in the south. Hope it pays off and great foresight in staging this operation

Ugly, very Ugly, Andrew look away now, this is not the way to invade Japan... it really isn't!

Do you think he will listen?

Nice use of sledghammers to crush the offshore islands.

Cheers

Rob

Great job GJ. That day that you used to copy & paste all those sigint files was apparently time well spent. Good luck in the ensuing battles!

Yes, tomorrow our AKVs will unload 4 squadrons of Spitfires Mk VIII with TOP GUN pilots at Uruppu, while more 50 fighter squadrons will be unloading from Air transport cargos at Shimushiri, Uruppu and Etorofu.
At Etorofu (port level 3) i'm disbanding 6 AKEs (big enough to replenish my BBs), 2 ASs, 2 ADs and 2 ARs.
Same goes of Uruppu.
Several Seabees regiments are already at Work to fortify and expand the three conquested bases.
Several DD Divisions will move close to Hakkodake (south of Bihoro) in order to prevent a coup de main by his BBs, while more DDs will be sent up north, closing the straights with Shaklain peninsula.

Tomorrow we'll conquer Bihoro, Shukotan and Kunashiri, while an invasion will take place at Shikuka (northern part of Shakalin).

Several big units are massing at SF, prepping and getting ready for the next phase of the invasion.

Soon Rader will reply with his usual hammer...he's not fighting us now...he's organizing his forces...and i see many barges moving up and down from Ominato to Okkaido...clearly reinforcing the region.

We'll try to speed up the expanding process and tomorrow attack at Bihoro will be a shock one, with my tanks in reserve -pursuit mode.

Very pleased, so far, about the firsy days of SUDDENLY HAIRY....everything went perfect.
We haven't lost a single ship so far...and our troops, despite the loooooong journey aboard non-invasion ships are in a very good shape

a VERY important hex to move DDs into (and if possible PTs if in range) is Hakodate))

it has a strong naval fortress - but if you just move into the hex - and not move through it into the sea of Japan then these guns won't attack!

it is a 2 hex move from Ominato - he will use massive barge transports (that's what my opponent did) to move reinforcements to Hokkaido

if you move a few DDs there - set to react 0 hexes - and he forgets to escort his barges - then you might get a few nice kills! (I killed about 4 Divisions worth on the one day I was able to get through his escorts - I lost 10 DDs or so with these moves - but 4 DIvs are worth it!)

next possible option is Mauban (or whatever) - also in range for japanese barges departing Ominato!

if I may - you should also have SS patrol the approaches to Sapporo - he may try to move large convoys onto Sapporo, which is probably his larges port on Hokkaido.... - you really don't want him to reinforce Hokkaido too much... - he can still do so via air and barges... but if he starts using xAPs - then even your 10 Divs might be in trouble....

I was going to ask about this one since you obviously have enough up there to get it. But of course it's already in the plan. Not that he can use the oil and resources with you sitting in Hokkaido, but it makes a good rear base as well for your ops in the future. It will definitely make the other Kuriles irrelevant as well.

Why am I playing Japan again? This looks like a lot of fun! To sit and watch those ships for months inching closer, and finally to have it all on the ground successfully must be immensely satisfying.

With the amount of supply you brought you should have PTs available soon right? These would be perfect for Hakodate.
