Hi there,

during my gaming evening yesterday i had an incident:

- i designed a Space Station based on a existing research station design with all Research modules to give me ~200k research per area
- i used a construction ship to have this Station build at a blackhole

At first try the construction ship got sucked into the black hole, second try i manually told the constructor to build the station at the blue edge of the black hole (when selected) - the halfway finished station got sucked in and i had to warp out the constructor - The third try i placed the station a little further away and it finally got build.

Now: according to the information of that black hole it should give a research bonus - for some reason it doesnt on my station. What did i miss ?

Do you have a scientist with a bonus in that particular area at another Research station?

I think the research bonuses per area work like this:

For all research sites, look for the site-specific bonus, and add to that any bonus a scientist on the station may offer.

Then, for each of 'Weapons', 'Energy', 'Hi Tech', pick the highest bonus from any of your research sites as evaluated above. That is the bonus you should receive, globally for all research in that area.

You might want to give it some time. It can take a month or two for science bonuses to kick in.

Also - it was a research station, yes? Only research stations will collect the bonuses, not bases of other types with labs.

Or maybe it is something else...

So that was the reason, thanks feelotraveller: i designed this space station from scratch and did not give it a research station role but a "star base" role ;/ *bummer* So how would i go about making an all in one research station that the AI is willing to build at good locations ?

I typically build my first space port as a research station. It's weak with a 2-shield and 2-armor, but I put 10 of each lab for the three fields of research. I eliminate weapons too. Defensive bases cover it. That base collects the global modifier of your scientist stationed there--I think. I don't know if your top scientist needs to be stationed at a space port or not to provide the global boost. Scientists at research stations only boost that station and only in  the area of research being done there.

It won't. That would be a human exploit and is doomed to be made by hand in repayment.

The AI differs between research kinds and therefore you will have to adjust that or just suffer the consequences. I am alright with a multi research, but consider every station got equipment and a main target. Just consider the class just that. The other labs are only supporting the main goal of research.

You can do this by making a design with at least one of each type of lab and then saving it under each type of research station. Start out by making one (say energy) - save it. Select 'copy as new' from the design screen and then change the type of base (drop down menu upper left). Make sure you change the name and save it. Repeat for third type.

Whether this is the best thing to do is another question. There are different approaches... But this should provide the automation with a single design filling each of the three research station slots. The computer will then build this design whenever it builds a research station.

I know not to build in the swirly black hole. Is anywhere outside the selection circle around the black hole but within the striped system area OK with full research and scenery benefits? If so, my thinking is that keeping some distance avoids the risk of mishaps for visiting ships.

Anwhere in the area you describe should be fine.

I try not to build too far away out from the danger zone, just in case, maybe no more than one third of its radius added on the outside. With that much space I have never seen any accidents.

Thanks for the discussion and tips. I followed feelotraveller's hint on sharing the same design of station with all research modules and just changing the type.
