rader - excellent idea - michaelm deserves the best we can give. To all the rest of you, first class response and support.

I don't see anything on the Paypal account in the last 24 hours. I don't think it went through.

Bill -

Have resubmitted and received confirmation that it went through. I did not click on the "update total" button before submitting the original document; thus canceling the attempt.

Thank you and jrcar for your efforts on michaelm's behalf.

Now that the important stuff is taken care of, back to hunting the Lexington and Yorktown (unless they find me first)...

Gents -

Have been visiting Matrix WitP / WitP AE websites since 2004; and am very comfortable and familiar with those who post on a regular basis. I have a high degree of trust in those individuals who post regularly on this forum - because I would expect nothing less that integrity and honesty from all of you. While there can be some very strong differences of opinions between posters (to put it mildly), I have absolute trust and confidence in jcar, wdolsen, or JWE for that matter (and many others). It seems to me that the folks who don't measure up to this standard do not stay around for long.

Those, here, on this forum are the community of men and women with whom I look forward to and thoroughly enjoy associating with.

OK - just some thoughts that came to mind -

Mac

Just read on the tech forum that michaelm's laptop went U/S. Wonder if we should just give him the cash to help fund a new machine.

Maybe the extra should go towards a gift certificate at some electronics place that sells laptops and/or parts.  I don't know how much of a hardware guy Michael is, but I would be buying parts to fix mine if I could, but then I came to programming via Electrical Engineering.

Just donated I've been a lurker forever but almost never comment. I LOVE the game. Been playing the same game as the Allies since Aug 22, 2010. Right now it's Aug 1943. Michaelm's work has more than earned my respect. Happy holidays!

jrcar will be applying the money.  I haven't seen him post in a few days.  right now I've received $398 in donations from 28 people with $378.64 left over after fees.  I haven't made my donation yet, so that will bump up the total a little.

I lobby that the remainder go to a gift certificate at someplace where he can use it for a new laptop or parts to fix the old one.  I don't know what is available in Australia or what typical prices are there.  I know some things are drastically cheaper here.  I have a modeler friend there who said that even with the shipping and exchange rate, it's cheaper to buy plastic models in the US and ship them to Australia.  But that is a much more limited market than laptops.

I will accept Paypal until Midnight Pacific time (about 8 hours from this post), then send whatever I have to jrcar.

Bill

Disagree, we don't know what type of laptop, whether he needs to buy or repair - or where that might happen...

Bottle of something and then money order (bank cheque).

Agree about needing more details about the laptop for a gift certificate, for example if it is a Mac, spare parts are usually only available from Apple.  Also he mentioned it is only around 12 months old, so might even be covered by the warranty or sent back to the manufacturer for repair.  There is also probably thousands of computer shops in Sydney, both online and the bricks and mortar variety, but also no certainty they will support his specific brand of laptop, or carry the one specific part that he might need.  There is also the chance the old laptop cannot be repaired.   So is probably better to give him the money directly, along with a gift, to use as he needs.

In the US there are many large discount online computer shops.  The one I use most is called NewEgg.  I think they carry every brand of laptop out there.  I don't know if Australia has anything specific.

I did find a message where he was talking about his last machine dying in January of this year.  He said he was going to put another laptop he had sitting around into use.  So I think it's an older computer that just died.  Probably not under warranty.

OK, we're getting down to the wire.  About an hour to go.

Through the Paypal link you can pay with a credit card.  If you mark it as a "gift" and take it from a Paypal balance they don't take any fees, at least for domestic transfers.  Though that might not be feasible for everyone.

The link again:

for what reason - so he can't use it ? There is a difference in giving a gift certificate for a general store and a computer place... esp. when we are out of the loop regarding his issues.

What's wrong with giving money - when money is needed and versatile ?

Perhaps we should simply ask Michael what he prefers. The scotch is a great idea, but if he needs a laptop more, perhaps that would be a better route.

I agree with pws1225. Gifting Whisky is nice, but if he could need the money more then the Whisky? In the end we all want to honour his support, not his taste for some special drink.

Problem is, if we ask he will know what's going on. By the way, he has to be rather surprised... he sees this thread (about him), lots of comments and hits... "maybe this is a huge conspiracy and they are planning my doom. I should have delivered more patches. They don't pardon, they don't forget..."

Still, when I want to buy someone a gift I always try to buy the thing they might prefer / buy themselves. So asking would be better methinks. It would spoil the whole thing but what do you want
