I've been on the fence about this game for a long time in spite of buying all three instalments. After my first long Legends session this afternoon I was so frustrated I was getting ready to delete it from my hard drive for good. Ship and fleet behaviour on manual just seemed not to be working as it should, and fleets were doing all kinds of things, many of them stupid, that I thought they shouldn't be doing given the setting they had. The game manual was no help, so I read through all the relevant posts on the forum, and have come to the following conclusions:

1. Some behaviour was buggy or due to counter-intuitive design choices. This is confirmed by the changes in the new beta patch. Great!

2. Some behaviour was due to me not understanding how engagement stance and fleet postures work. As I mentioned the manual could be a lot more helpful in this regard, but after reading the forum I've worked a lot of it out now. Also great, and thanks to all who posted comments. The fleet stances are indeed very powerful tools, but it takes a while to understand them.

3. There is still some stuff I don't understand. For example, if I have the posture of a manual fleet set to defend its home base only, then what effect does the engagement stance have? Set to "when attacked" and "nearby targets" makes sense, but what happens if it is set to "system targets" ... does that override the fleet setting or vice versa? Or as another example, if I set fleet posture to "Anywhere", what happens if I set engagement stance to "nearby targets", for instance?

I want to love this game, and it is probably the best space 4x around at the moment, but it is too frustrating at times.
